As of recently I've been smelling a gas smell after driving my vehicle. No matter the distance or time I smelled the odor of gas. I am a certified automotive technician, so I decided to diagnose the problem myself. I put my vehicle in the air and spotted a wet spot of gas on the bottom left side of my fuel tank. To continue my diagnosis process I googled to see if anyone dealt with a similar issue. Seen a decent amount of people confirming the problem. A leak from the D/S fuel sending unit. So I take off my rear seats, and takeoff the fuel sending unit cover. Once the cover was off seen multiple cracks along side top of the unit. No warning lights was present, however did notice MPG was getting worse and worse. the little cracks makes my vehicle a fire hazard. I was able to have the replacement part ordered for about $140.
I WRITE REQUESTING THAT MY VEHICLE 2008 BMW 335XI VIN NUMBER [XXX] BE TAGGED/LISTED AS NEEDING THE REVISED SIB 13 01 20 -EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN 10E-A02 ISSUED BY BMW ON 01/17/2020. THIS REVISED 2020 BMW INTERNAL AMENDED RECALL INSTRUCTIONS REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF ALL ORIGINAL FUEL INJECTORS. IT AMENDS WHAT WAS BEING DONE SINCE THE ORIGINAL RECALL SIB 13 14 20 FROM THE YEAR 2011 WHICH REQUIRED ONLY INDIVIDUAL FAILING INJECTORS BE REPLACED. BACK IN 2011, THE BMW SERVICE CENTER THAT WORKED ON MY CAR, REPLACED TWO (2) FAILING INJECTORS AND REMOVED THE CAR FROM THE RECALL LIST PREMATURELY. THAT WAS WRONG BECAUSE FUEL INJECTORS ARE ?INDIVIDUAL? PIECES OF EQUIPMENT, AND MY CAR NEEDS SIX (6) OF THEM. IN THE YEAR 2013, BMW REPLACED THREE (3) FUEL INJECTORS IN A DIFFERENT BANK UNDER WARRANTY. MAKING IT THAT WAS STILL ONE MORE ORIGINAL INJECTOR LEFT (INJECTOR NUMBER #5) IN THE CAR. THIS REMAINING INJECTOR #5 IN MY CAR IS AN ORIGINAL INJECTOR AND SHOULD STILL BE SUBJECT TO THE RECALL. I CALLED BMW USA ASKING FOR THE UPDATED 01/17/2020 RECALL BE COMPLETED ON MY CAR AND THEY DENIED MY REQUEST STATING THEY HAVE PROPERLY COMPLETED THE ORIGINAL RECALL BACK IN 2011. I HAD THEM REVIEW THE RECORDS WHICH INDICATE THAT BACK IN 2011 DURING THE ORIGINAL RECALL SIB 13 14 20 ONLY FUEL INJECTORS 4 & 6 WERE REPLACED UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE INJECTORS. INJECTOR NUMBER 5 IS STILL ORIGINAL AND IT IS SUBJECT TO THE 01/17/2020 SIB 13 01 20 -EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN 10E-A02 ISSUED BY BMW. CURRENTLY, THIS FUEL INJECTOR LEAKS FUEL DOWN INTO THE CYLINDER HEAD AND CREATES POLLUTION. I AM ATTACHING SERVICE RECORDS. 01MAY2020. BROUGHT 2008 BMW 335I TO SOUTH ATLANTA BMW DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE REAR BRAKE PADS (BASED ON INSPECTION REPORT FROM A JAN2020 APPT). IT WAS DETERMINED THAT: 1. OIL FILTER HOUSING GASKET: FILTER HOUSING GASKETS & OIL COOLER O-RINGS LEAKING OIL 2. RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT. UPPER COOLANT HOSE TURNING BROWN AND SEEPING. 01MAY2020. RADIATOR HOSE WAS REPLACED ALONG WITH CONDUCTING BRAKE FLUID FLUSH AND MICRO FILTER. SAME DAY AFTER REPAIRS WERE COMPLETE THE CAR STALLS AND SHUTS OFF AND BECOMES UNABLE TO DRIVE. CAR IS TOWED BACK TO DEALERSHIP FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION THE FOLLOWING ARE IDENTIFIED: 1. FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENT: R&R HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP & LOW PRESSURE SENSOR PER FAULT CODE 29F2 2.TURBOCHARGER - VARIABLE BOOST CONTROL SOLENOID: BOTH VANOS SOLENOIDS & OIL CHANGE PER SIB. DEALERSHIP INFORMS ME THAT THE FUEL PUMP'S WARRANTY HAS BEEN EXTENDED 10 YEARS/120000 MILES DUE TO MANUFACTURING ISSUES WITH THE FUEL PUMP. I HAVE NEVER BEEN MADE AWARE OF ISSUES WITH THE FUEL PUMP OR EXTENDED WARRANTIES FOR REPLACING. I DO THINK I SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS ON A MALFUNCTIONING FUEL PUMP THAT WAS POORLY MANUFACTURED. BMW SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR. *TR

I OWN A 2008 335I TWIN TURBO BMW 3 SERIES, WHILE DRIVING I STARTED SMELLING A FRESH GAS SMELL IN THE BACK OF MY CAR INSIDE AND OUTSIDE, REALLY STRONG SMELL SO MUCH I HAVE TO KEEP MY WINDOWS DOWN AND IT GIVES ME A HEADACHE AND I FEEL LIKE MY CAR IS GOING TO CATCH ON FIRE WITH ANY GIVEN SPARK AND IT COULD, THE CERTIFIED MECHANIC SAID MY FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY IS FAULTY SO I WENT ONLINE AND THERE IS A RECALL ON THE 2008 335I TWIN TURBO BUT FOR SOME REASON WHEN I CALLED BMW THEY SAID MY CAR IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST SO THEY WONT FIX IT! MY CAR HAS THE PROBLEM, MY CAR HAS APX 80,000 , EIGHTY THOUSAND MILES ONI IT. WHY IS MY CAR NOT COVERED WHEN IT HAS THE PROBLEM OF ALL THE OTHER CARS? THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION I HAVE. THE LINES THAT ARE INSIDE THE FUEL PUMP CAME OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND THE CAR STOPPED WORKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. MY MECHANICS HAD THE EXACT SAME MODEL CAR HAVE THE SAME EXACT ISSUE AND WHEN THEY CALLED BMW FOR THE PARTS THE SERVICE GUY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THEY SEE IT ALL THE TIME IN THIS PARTICULAR MODEL AND BMW STATES THAT SINCE YOU DON'T HAVE ANY RECALL ON IT THAT THEY WILL NOT FIX MY CAR WITHOUT ME PAYING FOR IT. THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED TWO TIMES TO ME AND IT IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD TO HAVE THE CAR JUST STOP WHILE DRIVING. CAN YOU PLEASE SEE IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS THAT ARE SIMILAR TO MINE? ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC THE BMW SERVICE CENTER HAS THE PARTS ON HAND BECAUSE THEY SEE THIS PROBLEM SO OFTEN IN THIS PARTICULAR MODEL. APPARENTLY IT IS BECAUSE THE FUEL INJECTION LINES ARE INSIDE THE TANK AND IT IS A BAD DESIGN AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT IS A LOW FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM THAT WAS DESIGNED BADLY AND THEY NO LONGER DESIGN IT THIS WAY.
FUEL PUMP JUST STOPPED WORKING; IT FIRST STOPPED WORKING WHILE OPERATING THE CAR THEN STARTED BACK UP WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. THE FACT IT DID THIS WHILE I WAS DRIVING WAS TERRIFYING. THEN ONCE I STOPPED AND PARKED IT DID NOT START BACK UP. THE CAR STARTER ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE BUT AN ERROR CAME UP ON THE SCREEN REGARDING A FUEL PUMP FAILURE.
VEHICLE STOPPED DEAD IN MIDDLE OF ROAD. VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN IT STOPPED. CATASTROPHIC FUEL PUMP FAILURE, PER MECHANIC. NO RECALL IN SYSTEM FOR THIS MODEL, BUT FIGURED IT SHOULD BE REPORTED.
MY CAR BEGAN TO RUN ROUGHLY AFTER A COLD START AS I WAS LEAVING MY OFFICE. AFTER A FEW SECONDS AND FEELING DECREASED POWER, I TRIED TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND INTO A PARKING SPOT IN THE PARKING GARAGE AT MICROSOFT'S HEAD QUARTERS (WHERE I WORK). THE VEHICLE STALLED OUT. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND GET INTO A PARKING SPACE, BUT IT CONTINUE TO RUN ROUGHLY. I NOTICED AN INTENSE SMELL OF GASOLINE AND IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I EXITED THE VEHICLE AND CHECKED THE EXHAUST. IT WAS BLOWING WHITE SMOKE AND HAD GASOLINE DRIPPING OUT OF THE TAIL PIPES, I LET THE VEHICLE COOL DOWN AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE WITH ANOTHER PERSON OBSERVING THE TAIL PIPE. IT AGAIN WAS RUNNING VERY ROUGH AND HAD GASOLINE SPRAYING OUT OF THE TAIL PIPE. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A SERVICE CENTER. THEY HAVE DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE IS THAT 2 OF THE INJECTORS ARE STUCK IN THE FULLY OPEN POSITION. AS A RESULT, THE CAR IS UNSAFE (I WAS LUCKY THERE WASN'T A MASSIVE FIRE). PREVIOUSLY, I'D HAD THE HPFP (HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP) REPLACED UNDER RECALL. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE RECALLED/REPLACED HPFP MAY ITSELF BE DEFECTIVE AND FAILED, CAUSING 2 INJECTORS TO FAIL SIMULTANEOUSLY (THERE'S STATISTICALLY NO CHANCE OF TWO INJECTORS FAILING SIMULTANEOUSLY WITHOUT SOME CAUSAL FACTOR UPSTREAM IN THE FUEL SYSTEM). ON CONTACTING BMW (IN BELLEVUE WA) AND BMW NORTH AMERICA, THEY HAVE REFUSED TO COVER THE REPAIR OR ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE. I AM CONTINUING TO ENGAGE WITH THEM ON THE REPAIR, BUT BELIEVE THIS IS A MORE SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. HAD I NOT PULLED OFF WHEN I DID, THE VEHICLE COULD HAVE WENT UP IN FLAMES WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY.
CURRENTLY I HAVE THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP IN MY 335I (2008). I HAVE MY "SERVICE ENGINE SOON ENGINE MALFUNCTION. REDUCED POWER" LIGHT ON - IT JUST CAME ON YESTERDAY. ORIGINAL WARRANTY WAS 4 YEARS 40,000 MILES. WHICH ACCORDING TO BMW WAS EXTENDED 10 YEARS 120,000. SO I AM OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE I ALREADY HAVE 130K, MY CAR WAS BROUGHT TO BMW SEVERAL OCCASION, IT WAS NEVER BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THERE MAY A POTENTIAL PROBLEMS WITH THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP.
THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL KEEPS FAILING .........THE ENGINE LOSES POWER WHEN DRIVING ...SAFETY ISSUE
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 328XI. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND NOTICED A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL. FUEL WAS ALSO LEAKING FROM AN UNKNOWN PART OF THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED WHENEVER THE FUEL LEVEL WAS BEYOND HALF A TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 129,200.
FAULTY HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP- LOSS OF POWER - ENGINE STALL IN TRAFFIC
I'VE HAVE HAD SEVERAL ISSUES INVOLVING THE FUEL PUMP/INJECTORS. ALL SERVICE HAS BEEN PERFORMED AT THE SAME DEALER. THE COST HAS EXCEEDED 3500.00 IN THE LAST 3 YEARS. CAR IS IN THE SHOP AGAIN, DEALER INDICATES FUEL INJECTORS ARE THE PROBLEM, ANOTHER 1989.00 TO GET THE CAR FIX. I BELIEVE THIS IS TOO MUCH $ FOR THE SAME ISSUE FOR A 3 YEAR PERIOD. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 335I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A PREMATURE LEAK AND STRONG FUMES OF FUEL COMING FROM THE VEHICLE, WHICH PROGRESSED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED NO REMEDY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AROUND 60 MPH SPEED AND SUDDENLY MY CAR COULDN'T SPEED ANY FURTHER AND LUCKY FOR ME I WAS DRIVING NEXT TO CENTER DIVIDE AND COULD PULL IT, I WAS ABLE TO AVOID ANY ACCIDENT. IT WAS PEAK TRAFFIC TIME ( EARLY MORNING COMMUTE ). SO I BELIEVE THIS NEEDS TO LOOKED INTO THAT IF THERE WAS A RECALL WHICH WAS NOT APPLIED TO ALL THE MAKE, MODELS. AFTER DIAGNOSIS IT WAS FOUND THE ISSUE WAS WITH FUEL PUMP ON WHICH THERE ARE CERTAIN RECALLS ON THE NEWER MODELS BUT FOR 2008 MODEL THEY WAS NONE I CONFIRMED WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE.
VEHICLE 2008 BMW 335I LOST ALL POWER WHILE ACCELERATING ON HIGHWAY (APPROX. 55MPH). FORCED TO WEAVE THRU LANES / TRAFFIC TO A COMPLETE STOP ON SHOULDER OF ROAD. IN ADDITION, VEHICLE 2008 BMW 335I HAS ENGINE LIGHT ON DURING "COLD START". DURING COLD START VEHICLE STATES "REDUCED POWER, ENGINE MALFUNCTIONING". CAR DIAGNOSED: DIAGNOSIS <REPLACE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND LOW PRESSURE SENSOR>
CAR HAD FUEL PUMP INITIALLY REPLACED WHEN CAR STILL UNDER THE FACTORY WARRANTY. BMW NA WILL TRY TO AVOID THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH. NOTE INJECTORS FOR THE N54 ENGINE ARE ALSO ON A WORLD WIDE RECALL. NOW THE INJECTION PUMP FROM A RECALL IS BEING CALLED EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR 10 YEARS OR 120,000. MILES WELL IT HAPPENED, GOT HIT BY A CAR FROM REAR WHEN MY 335I STALLED!!!!!! I WAS EXPERIENCING EXTENDED STARTS, FOLLOWED BY ENGINE STALLING REPEATEDLY FOR 3 ATTEMPTS THEN IT WILL CLEAR OUT. NOW WHEN LIGHT LOAD IS APPLIED THE ENGINE LIGHT WITH THE ENGINE HALF GRADED OUT APPEARS (REDUCED POWER), ENGINE RUNNING VIOLENTLY ROUGH CODES COMES UP ARE P142E & P3090. THEY WANTED ME TO REPLACE MY INJECTORS FIRST BECAUSE THEY SAID I HAVE "OLD INJECTORS" NOTE WHEN HPFP WAS REPLACED THEY REPLACED THE RECALLED INJECTORS BUT THEY CHANGED ONLY 4 ! EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW IT'S A 6 CYLINDER I WANTED TO TELL BMW THAT WHEN THEY BUILT THE ENGINE THEY INSTALLED ALL 6 NEW INJECTORS. THEIR REPLY WAS IT ONLY NEEDED 4 AT THAT TIME, WELL WHAT A OUT NOW YOUR TELLING ME I NEED TO REPLACE ALL 6 BECAUSE THEIR OLD INJECTORS SO THE REPLACEMENT DONE WAS TO MASK THE PROBLEM!!! TO THIS DATE THEY HAVE ISSUES WITH THE CURRENT ENGINE PLATE FORM N54 - N55 EPIC FAILURE. SOME SAY ITS ALSO REPLACEMENT OF JUST A FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR. I'M CHANGING MINE ON MONDAY BOUGHT IT ONLINE FROM A BMW DEALER INSTALLATION IS 2-2.5 HOURS BASIC TOOLS NEEDED AND CARE. *TR
APRIL 14, 2014 OUR CAR WENT IN FOR SERVICE. MAY 7, 2014 IT WAS RETURNED FOR A 'REDUCED POWER,SERVICE ENGINE SOON'LIGHT. AT THAT TIME, THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED AND COVERED UNDER A RECALL. IN JULY THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. WE REPLACED THE BATTERY. IN LATE AUGUST, THE WARNING LIGHT APPEARED AGAIN. SEPTEMBER 8,2014 THE CAR WENT INTO THE GARAGE. AT THIS TIME WE WERE TOLD IT WAS MOST LIKELY THE TURBO, EST REPAIRS AT $5500.00. AT THIS TIME THE CAR HAD 83985 MILES ON IT(THE TURBO WAS UNDER AN "EXTENDED" WARRANTY UNTIL 82,000). I CONTACTED BMW AND ASK FOR AN EXTENSION ON THE WARRANTY SINCE WE WERE LESS THAN 2,000 MILES OVER. THEY AGREED TO PAY FOR THE PART, BUT NOT THE LABOR WHICH IS 2600.00. WHILE I APPRECIATE THEIR EFFORT, IT IS NOT ENOUGH. THEY OBVIOUSLY ARE AWARE THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THIS PART, SINCE THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY SO I FEEL THAT THEY SHOULD COVER THE ENTIRE AMOUNT. YESTERDAY THE SAME WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND HAS STAYED ON. THE CAR IS RUNNING VERY LOUDLY, SHAKING, WITH LITTLE POWER. WE ARE REQUESTING YOUR ADVICE AND/OR ASSISTANCE ABOUT WHAT TO DO NEXT. ONE THING I DIDN'T MENTION WAS APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH AFTER PURCHASING THIS PRE-OWNED CAR, THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED WITH ONLY 25,000 MILES ON IT. SO THE CURRENT ENGINE HAS APPROXIMATELY 55000 MILES ON IT. *TR

THE ENGINE MALFUNCTIONING AND THE REDUCE SPEED WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE FUEL PUMP. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL. THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES AFTER THE REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE WHO STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED PER THE MANUFACTURER'S RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 51,000.
