TRANSMISSION GOES INTO A LIMB MODE WHEN REACHING 30-40 MPH OF SLOWING DOWN FROM OVER 60 MPH AND A BANG HAPPENS LIKE IT YOU GET HIT FROM BEHIND THE CAR WOULD NOT SWITCH GEAR AND THE ENGINE WOULD INCREASE THE RPM THE CAR TOP SPEED WOULD BE 40 MPH WHEN IT MALFUNCTIONS THIS WOULD HAPPEN IN CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS THE CAR RESETS BY TURNING THE ENGINE OF WAITING A WHILE AND RESTARTING THE ENGINE
MY TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AT 40,000 MILES DUE TO A FAULT. IT WOULD JUMP OR BUMP EVERY TIME I WOULD COME TO A STOP AND IT DOWNSHIFTS INTO 1ST GEAR. I ALMOST HIT A VEHICLE BECAUSE I DID NOT FULLY STOP YET AND THE CAR SURGED FORWARD. IT FINALLY WOULD GO INTO FAIL SAFE MODE OR LIMP MODE AND THE DEALER INSTALLED A BRAND NEW TRANSMISSION AND THE ISSUE WENT AWAY. I NOW HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AT 120,000 MILES WHICH IS ONLY 80,000 MILES ON THE NEW TRANNY. I NEVER HAD A VEHICLE WHERE THE TRANSMISSION FAILED EVEN ONE TIME LET ALONE TWICE AND THEY WERE ALL INEXPENSIVE CARS/TRUCKS. I WILL NEVER BUY A BMW AGAIN BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT HELP ME EVEN WHEN THEY KNOW THEY HAVE A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. 2 TRANSMISSIONS WITH THE EXACT ISSUES THAT WON'T EVEN MAKE IT TO 100,000 MILES. I ALSO SEE OTHER COMPLAINTS FROM OTHERS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND VEHICLE. SHAME ON YOU BMW NA FOR NOT OWNING UP TO THIS ISSUE AND TAKING CARE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS. EVERYTIME, COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, TRANSMISSION HAS A NOTICEABLE "BUMP"/ROUGH SHIFT INTO 1ST GEAR, TOOK THE VEHICLE TO BMW DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS/REPAIR, PROBLEM WAS NOT SOLVED TIME AND TIME AGAIN. NOW, APPROXIMATELY OVER A YEAR LATER, TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT ON, TRANSMISSION WENT INTO LIMP MODE. BMW DEALER STATES, TRANSMISSION HAS TO BE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE DUE TO 3-2-1 DOWNSHIFT. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE AND VEHICLE SINCE PURCHASE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED METICULOUSLY AT THE SAME BMW DEALERSHIP.
I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE THINKING THAT IT WOULD BE A SAFE CAR FOR MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS. THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO BE SLIPPING AND AN EXCESSIVELY HARSH 2-1 DOWNSHIFT OCCURS WHEN DECELERATING TO A STOP. ALSO, TRANSMISSION "BANGS" INTO GEAR WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A FULL OR A "ROLLING" STOP. THIS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES ON A DAILY BASIS. ONE TIME IN SPECIFIC I WAS DRIVING WITH MY 4 YEAR OLD NIECE AND IT CAUSED HER TO BECOME ALARMED AS WELL AS INJURE HER NECK. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT CAN BE DONE, THE DEALERSHIP IS SAYING THAT THEY WILL CHARGE ME AN RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY TO UPGRADE THE SOFTWARE FOR THE TRANSMISSION. I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD BE A "NO CHARGE" REPAIR OR FIX SEEING THAT NO CAR SHOULD BEHAVE IN THIS MANNER. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT CAN BE DONE, AS I AM NO LONGER DRIVING THE CAR AND TAKING THE BUS IN FEAR OF CAUSING ANY INJURY TO MY LOVED ONES. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2004 BMW 530I CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED WITH 29,000 MILES ON IT. IT CAME WITH A AUTOMATIC TIPTRONIC TRANSMISSION. I DROVE IT FOR APPROXIMATELY 10,000 MILES AND THE TRANSMISSION STARTED ACTING UP. I NOTICED WHEN I USED THE SPORT MODE AND DOWN SHIFTED INTO FIRST WHILE COMING TO A STOP THE CAR WOULD JERK OR SLAM INTO 1ST GEAR. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER (LAUDERDALE BMW OF PEMBROKE PINES) BUT THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I DROVE FOR ANOTHER 50 MILES OR SO AND THE CAR DIDN'T WANT TO SHIFT AND IT GAVE AN ERROR ON THE MAIN SCREEN THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD A FAULT DRIVE MODERATELY. IT ALSO STATED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE CHECKED AT THE DEALER. SO I TOOK IT IN AGAIN AND AGAIN THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I WAS GETTING ANNOYED. I DROVE THE CAR FOR ANOTHER 30 MILES AND THE FAULT CAME BACK BUT THIS TIME IT THE CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT AT ALL AND I COULDN'T DRIVE OVER 35 MPH. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. I WAS SHOCKED BECAUSE THE CAR WAS FAIRLY NEW. THEY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION WITH A BRAND NEW FACTORY ONE AND IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. FAST FORWARD TO TODAY THE SAME SENARIO AS ABOVE HAPPENED ALL OVER AGAIN, I HAD ABOUT 85,000 MILES ON THE NEW TRANSMISSION AND I NOTICED THE SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS. I WAS ABLE TO RESET THE CAR AFTER EACH ERROR UNTIL LAST WEEK. THE TRANSMISSION FINALLY FAILED AND WENT INTO THE FAIL SAFE MODE AND YOU CAN'T DRIVE OVER 35 MPH. THE DEALER STATED THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE IT AGAIN. I AM NOW OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE COST WILL BE AROUND $6,000 TO REPLACE. I FEEL THESE TRANSMISSIONS FAIL BECAUSE THEY ARE NEVER SERVICED AT 50,000 LIKE ALL OTHER TRANSMISSIONS. BMW CLAIMS THAT THE FLUID INSIDE IS A LIFE TIME FLUID THAT NEVER NEEDS CHANGING. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN HE HIGHWAY AT A SPEED OF 65 WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE TO SWITCH LANES AND THE TRANSMISSION FAUT CAME ON AND IT ALSO STATED TO DRIVE MODERATELY. THE CAR ALSO WENT INTO A SAFE MODE TO WERE I COULDN'T ACCELERATE AND IT WOULDN'T SWITCH OUT OF THIRD GEAR. CAR THEN WAS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON AND CODE FAULT WENT ALWAYS , TWO WEEKS LATER SAME THING POPPED UP TRYING TO GET ON HIGHWAY AND NOW WON'T GO AWAY. *TR
WHEN DRIVING BETWEEN 35-40 MILES PER HOUR THE CAR HAS A VERY BAD JERK LIKE IT DOESN'T KNOW WHAT GEAR IT WANTS TO BE IN. AND SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE THE CAR IS GETTING HIT FROM BEHIND WITH HOW HARD OTHER JERKS ARE. *TR
TRANMISSION FAILURE ON THIS CAR. HAD TRANSMISSION REBUILT TO NO AVAIL (OVER $3000). WOUND UP GETTING OUR $$ BACK, THANK GOODNESS. APPARENTLY, IN READING ALL THE INFO ONLINE, THE 2004 525I TRANSMISSION FAILURES IS VERY COMMON. ONLY REMEDY IS A FULL-BLOWN BMW REPLACEMENT WITH THE CLUTCH ALREADY SET.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2004 BMW 525I. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT AND WHEN IT DID SHIFT IT LUNGED FORWARD. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE BUT HE WAS UNABLE TO BE DUPLICATE IT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE MECHATRONIC SLEEVE WAS LEAKING TRANSMISSION FLUID AND AS A RESULT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
I HAVE BEEN GETTING TRANSMISSION ERROR FAULT FREQUENTLY AND NOW SEEMS TO HAPPEN VERY OFTEN. YOU CAN STOP THE CAR AND RESTART IT AND IT WILL RUN BUT WILL GENERATE THE ERROR IN A MONTH OR TWO AGAIN. *TR
ENGINE STALLING WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE, UNABLE TO RESTART VEHICLE AFTER THE STALL. LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKE POWER ASSIST WHEN VEHICLE STALLS WHILE DRIVING. ENGINE STALLS VERY PERIODICALLY AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF OPERATION. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER 3 TIMES AND WERE UNABLE TO PINPOINT THE PROBLEM. DEALER REPLACED BATTERY AND ELECTRICAL WIRING TO FIX PROBLEM BUT PROBLEM STILL CONTINUED. ALSO A BRAND NEW ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED AND STILL SAME PROBLEMS AROSE. MESSAGE CENTER WOULD DISPLAY "TRANSMISSION FAULT" DRIVE MODERATELY. *TT
I OWN A 2004 BMW 525I WITH 119,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE. I EXPERIENCED MY CAR MAKING A THUMP SOUND AND THEN THE I WOULD LOSE ACCELERATION. I CALLED THE MECHANIC AND THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT DID NOT SHOW THE DASH ERRORS. THIS HAD BEEN GOING ON FOR 3 WEEKS AND THEN THE MECHANIC TOLD ME MY TRANSMISSION NEEDED REPLACING. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT THIS. I WILL NEVER BUY A BMW AGAIN. *TR
VEHICLE LUNGES FORWARD AT LOW SPEEDS SUCH AS PARKING; 4 TIMES IN THE LAST MONTH, WHEN I AM PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, THE VEHICLE HAS LUNGED FORWARD. 2 OF THOSE 4 TIMES, I ALMOST HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I HAD SHIFTED FROM REVERSE, TO DRIVE, AND JUST TAKEN MY FOOT OFF OF THE BRAKE, AND THE VEHICLE JUMPED FORWARD. THE DEALER HAS CONTINUED TO SAY THAT THINGS ARE OK AND NORMAL. THEY ARE NOT NORMAL. ADDITIONALLY, I HAVE OTHER SHIFTING ISSUES BELOW: --35MPH (5TH TO 6TH HESITATION) 5-6 HARD SHIFT (SPORT MODE GOING 45-55 MPH) SLOW TO ENGAGE REVERSE -- GEAR SHIFTING IN GENERAL IS JUST SLOPPY (THE LOANER THAT THE DEALER PROVIDED, SHIFTED GREAT). *TR
MY CAR WAS OUT ON A TEST DRIVE WITH A REPAIR FACILITY WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. *TR
HAD MY CAR 2004 545I (78,250 MILES) SERVICED AT BMW DEALERSHIP IN LONG ISLAND FOR A DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION PAN LEAKING AT FLUID. DEALERSHIP REPLACED AND TEST DROVE BEFORE I PICKED IT UP BUT ALSO DENOTED THAT THERE WAS AN OIL LEAK ATTRIBUTED TO VACUUM PUMP/VANOS SEALS WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED SOON. AS I WAS DRIVING IT BACK TO NJ FROM LONG ISLAND DEALERSHIP I NOTICED A TRANSMISSION 'KICK/JERK/SURGE' AS CAR DECELERATED SEVERAL TIMES. DROVE THE CAR TO THE MARKET ON SUNDAY (7/25/2010) AND ON THE WAY BACK WARNING ENGINE MALFUNCTION STATING 'ENGINE OPERATING AT REDUCED OUTPUT'. EMAILED THE BMW SA IN LONG ISLAND THAT REPLACED DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION PAN/AT FLUID AND HE FELT IT MAY BE ATTRIBUTED TO OIL LEAK AND BAD VACUUM PUMP/SEALS AND HAVE IT LOOKED AT ASAP. 1. I IDENTIFIED A PROBLEM WITH THE 2004 BMW 545I WHICH I HAVE. I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE, WHICH I WILL EXPLAIN BELOW (IN SECTION 2 AS REQUESTED), ONLINE, AND FOUND THAT HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE. I FOUND THAT IN SOME INSTANCES, BMW CORRECTLY DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE, HOWEVER IN MANY INSTANCES, THEY DID NOT (IN SECTION 3, AS REQUESTED). 2. "THE CAR WOULD SHIFT INTO 5TH GEAR & THEN BETWEEN 35-40MPH AT A VERY LOW 1200RPM OR SO I WOULD GET THE SURGING OR SLIPPING OF THE TRANSMISSION. IT WAS A VERY LIGHT REPETITIVE HESITATION. IT ALMOST FELT LIKE THE ELECTRONICS WERE TRYING TO DECIDE WHETHER IT SHOULD STAY IN 5TH OR SHIFT BACK TO 4TH BECAUSE OF LOW RPM'S. IT WOULD HAPPEN WITH AN EXTREMELY LIGHT ACCELERATOR PRESSURE. IF YOU GAVE IT A LITTLE MORE GAS IT WOULD GO AWAY. A COUPLE TIMES I'D GET A REALLY HARSH SURGE ALMOST LIKE THE "SLAM". THE MANNER THAT THE CAR BEHAVES CAN REALLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WITH THE SURGE IN THE TRANSMISSION, & THE DISTRACTION THAT IT CAUSES TO THE DRIVER. IT HAS BECOME A DISTRACTION TO ME, BEING THE DRIVER, & ALSO NOTICED BY PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE, WHEN THEY FEEL THE CAR SURGE, & THEIR IS ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. 3. I TOOK THE CAR TO A BMW DEALERSHIP, & DESCRIBED THE ISSUE. THE SERVICE ADVISOR (REPRESENTATIVE) STATED THAT THEY WOULD LOOK AT THE VEHICLE, AS THEY HAD OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS, AS WELL. HE SAID THAT THEY WOULD PROBABLY NEED TO DO A SOFTWARE UPGRADE, OR REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. I RECEIVED THE CAR BACK, & WAS TOLD THAT THE SOFTWARE WAS UPGRADED, & TO TAKE THE VEHICLE AND SEE HOW IT DROVE. I DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME, & THE ISSUE WAS STILL THERE. THE REPAIR INVOICE SAYS THE SOFTWARE WAS NOT UPDATED. IT ALREADY HAD THE LATEST VERSION. I TOOK THE CAR BACK, AND THEY STATED THE OPERATION OF THE CAR IS NORMAL. IT IS NOT NORMAL. TRANSMISSION SLAMS INTO GEAR WHEN TAKING OFF FROM AN ALMOST STOPPED POSITION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO JUMP FORWARD VIOLENTLY. THIS HAS LAUNCHED ME INTO INTERSECTIONS AND CAUSED ME TO ALMOST REAR-END SEVERAL VEHICLES. THIS HAPPENS ON A WEEKLY BASIS OF DAILY DRIVING. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS TO REPROGRAM THE TRANSMISSION COMPUTER AT A COST TO ME(VEHICLE OUT OF WARRANTY) EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 BMW 545. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHUDDER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO RECOMMENDED THAT THE TRANSMISSION BE REPLACED; AND OFFERED TO PAY FOR HALF OF THE REPAIR COST. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. ADDITIONALLY, PRIOR TO THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER IN REGARDS TO A BURNING ODOR AND A TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK IN WHICH THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 74,100.
2004 BMW 530I. CONSUMER STATES ISSUES WITH TRANSMISSION *TGW CONSUMER SENT ADDITIONAL LETTER *TGW ON JUNE 25, 2008 THE CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION INDICATOR LIGHT BEING ON. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE RE-STARTED TO RESET THE LIGHT. THE TECHNICIAN HOOKED THE VEHICLE UP TO THE DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT AND THERE WERE NO FAULTS FOUND IN THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. IT WAS NOTED HOWEVER, THAT THE TRANSMISSION PAN WAS LEAKING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE TRANSMISSION. JULY 15, 2008 THE TRANSMISSION PAN WAS REPLACED ALONG WITH THE SEALING SLEEVE. APRIL 10, 2010, THE CONSUMER STATED THE TRANSMISSION WAS OPERATING IN FAIL SAFE MODE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE ABOVE 40 MPH. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND BASED UPON THE FAULT CODE THAT WAS FOUND, THE TRANSMISSION WAS NO LONGER OPERATING PROPERLY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE AT THAT TIME. *JB

2004 525I BMW WITH 70,000 MI HAD TRANSMISSION GO OUT SUDDENLY. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND HAVE HAD ALL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AT THE DEALER WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED. I WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION IS A TOTAL LOSS AND IT IS NOTHING THAT I DID OR COULD HAVE PREVENTED, BUT THE REPAIR BILL IS ~7,000.00. *TR
MY 2004 BMW 525I TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED. I WAS DRIVING AND HAD STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN AND ATTEMPTED TO PROCEED AND THE CAR INCHED OUT AND JUST STOPPED.. WHEN I GOT TO MY DESTINATION I TURNED THE CARE OFF. THE NEXT TIME I STARTED THE CAR THE MESSAGE WAS GONE UNTIL ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER. I LOOKED UP ANY INFORMATION THAT I COULD FIND ON BMW TRANSMISSIONS AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS CONSUMERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED OR ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS AND ARE DESPERATE FOR HELP. THE MAIN MALFUNCTION AT THIS POINT IS THAT THE CAR IS SLUGGISH AT TAKE OFF AND DEFINITELY WILL NOT GO INTO REVERSE AND THE DEALER HAS TOLD ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS SHOT. DRIVING THIS VEHICLE IS VERY DANGEROUS AND AT ANY TIME, UNKNOWINGLY THE TRANSMISSIONS ON THESE CARS CAN FAIL. PEOPLE DRIVING THESE BMW'S WITH FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BEFORE SOME ONE IS SERIOUSLY HURT. I AM STILL PAYING ON THIS AUTOMOBILE IT'S FOUR YEARS OLD AND IT HAS FAILED WITH A MAJOR PROBLEM. MY CAR IS IN THE SHOP AS WE SPEAK, I HAVEN'T RECEIVED A QUOTE ON THE COST AS OF YET, BUT THE MECHANIC HAS ADVISED ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS NO GOOD. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 525I BMW THAT PERIODICALLY HAS A TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE WHEN DRIVING FROM A STOP OR MOVING INTO 1ST AND 2ND GEAR. THE CAR JUMPS FORWARD AND IF NOT CAREFUL, I COULD ACCIDENTALLY HIT SOMETHING THAT IS NOT IN MY CONTROL. CONCORD BMW HAS TRIED TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM AND HAS ONLY DONE SO ONCE. THEY SAID IT WAS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM BUT HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX. RECENTLY, I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THEM AND NOW THEY TELL ME SINCE IT CAN NOT BE RECREATED THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. *JB
I HAVE A 2004 BMW 545I WHICH HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING A "TRANSMISSION SLIP" OVER THE PAST YEAR. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM BY BMW AND SOMETHING THAT IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT ON MY VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY BMW EMPLOYEES "OFF THE RECORD" THAT MY CAR HAS A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE BOUGHT BACK BY BMW AND REPLACED. I AM CURRENTLY DEALING WITH BMW OF NORTH AMERICA AND HAVE SENT THEM A COMPLAINT AS I HAVE HAD MY CAR SERVICED APPROXIMATELY 5-6 TIMES OVER THE PAST YEAR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WITH NO SOLUTION. I WANTED TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE NHTSA AS WELL BECAUSE IT IS APPARENT THAT BMW IS TRYING TO COVER UP A LARGE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH THEIR VEHICLES. I HAVE ALMOST BEEN IN 2 ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE AND I FEEL FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY WHEN DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. *NM
