The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact was able to stop and restart the vehicle and the power steering functionality returned. The contact stated that the power steering assist and stability track warning lights were illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that a sensor needed to be recalibrated. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

When driving down the road, the vehicle will chime several times and prompt two alternating messages across the dash saying "Service: Power Steering. Drive With Care" and "Service: Stabilitrak" as it cuts both the power steering and traction control to the vehicle. I have had this issue MANY times. If you turn off the ignition and restart the vehicle, it *usually* clears it up for a little while. It is very random when it happens. Usually, it occurs while just driving down the road normally, but it occasionally happens as soon as you turn on the ignition. I will say that it seems to occur more frequently when the weather is warmer. It happened a good bit last summer, then I had very few incidents with it happening over the winter, but as soon as the temperature got over 80F this year, it started again about once every other time I drive it. It is possible that this is just coincidence, but I believe it to be the case. It has happened since about May, 2021, through now, March, 2022. GM initially issued a recall for this issue on 3000 trucks of the 2015 year model. After many reports of it happening to other vehicles, they extended the recall to a good many other trucks, but still only to the 2015 year model. I have seen three or four reports online of it happening to others' 2016 models as well in addition to my own. This is a major safety hazard to both myself and others and has almost caused me to wreck twice as power steering cut off mid-turn. When I brought this up to my local GM dealer, they weren't able to make it happen while they had it but TOLD ME IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE and just gave me an estimate of ~$2k to have it fixed. If it is a known issue, should there not be a recall?

Incident: Mar 2022
Mar 2022

While driving down the highway at 75MPH, I heard an audible alert and a message appeared on my driver information screen in the dash that said "Service Power Steering Soon! Please drive with care." Immediately I noticed that the steering was EXTREMELY heavy (hard to turn). A few seconds later another message appeared that said "Service Stabilitrak System Soon. Traction Control set to off." I took the next offramp to get off the 6 lane highway. There was a light at the bottom that was red. When it turned green I had to make a left turn onto the cross road. I was barely able to make the turn and nearly crossed lanes. Turning into a gas station to check the engine was nearly impossible. It took many forward/back maneuvers to simply get into a parking spot. I shut off the truck and popped the hood. Looked under engine area for leaks etc. No issues visible - everything looked completely normal. Upon restart, the issue cleared and power steering was restored. Upon internet searching for the symptom I came across a recall I believe describes my issue (NHTSA 21V213 / GM N202325410). Unfortunately, my truck is outside the covered population of this recall. I have scheduled service to inspect my truck and have spoken to GM detailing this event. I have asked that if my issue is confirmed with DTC codes (I'm sure it will be), will they apply the remedy under recall (ie: no cost to me) and they have said no. As of right now, I know it's going to cost me $160 for them to inspect the truck, and my guess is well over $1200 for repairs. My biggest issue is that this is an intermittent electrical issue that will occur again, perhaps at a moment that results in an accident and injury to myself, loved ones with me, and/or others. I have seen others comment having same truck as mine, also outside the recall window, also have this same incident and get nowhere talking to GM. I think the recall failed to collect the entire affected population of vehicles defects built

The power steering has failed multiple times in the 5 years I've had this truck. Two of the (at least six) times, I was driving on the freeway, over 65 mph and could barely pull over because of how difficult it became to turn the wheel. Once I was able to get over, I pulled off the freeway and restarted the vehicle and the issue disappeared for the time being. I have researched online and found multiple people who claim the same issues have happened to them. I filed a safety report with GM and my ticket was closed, the reason given being "Link To Existing Product Investigation". I've tried reaching out to find the status of the existing investigation with no luck. I have had no inspections. There was no warning lamps or messages displayed prior to the problem. No warning. Just shuts off randomly and I can't reproduce.

Driving down the road and power steering suddenly stops with a warning. Thankfully no traffic this morning but was extremely hard to steer to get home. So unfortunate all the complaints about this for 2016 with GM only indicating 2015 recall for this issue. 2016 should also be included!

The power steering stops working. Making it hard to steer. From my research Chevrolet recalled the 2015 models for the same problem. Also some forum and blogs are complaining about the same problem I'm having with my truck. Mine just goes out without any indication. I have ask the dealer about it. and they said they couldn't do anything about it. I called Chevrolet but no help. My truck was manufactured on 3/17/16. This has happened 5 or 6 times but the form will only let me enter one date which I used the last time it happened.

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 15 MPH, a warning chime sounded as the steering wheel became firm. The power steering failure message was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle resumed normal operation after the restart. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where he was informed that the failure was related to a defective steering wheel torque sensor. The dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure and both informed the contact that the vehicle was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.

1 – Power steering and StabiliTrak assist drive with care warning comes on while driving and power steering gets hard to control. oThe vehicle will be available for inspection upon request, I’ll have a video of the problem because it happens sporadically. 2 – Safety while driving for me, passengers, and other drivers around me: oThe first time it happened was on January 5th, 2022 after pulling out of work during rush hour. -It was hard to maneuver while driving, and it is complicated to do a sharp turn. I had to lower my speed and turn on the caution lights. oThe second time it happened was running an errand close to home after I try scheduling a service where I bought the vehicle (Carmax) but was told that that will require to be taken to the dealership. -That time I did my research and noticed that this is a recurring problem that several owners have had and that GMC also had a recall for similar reasons. oThe third time it happened was today, January 17th, 2022 while driving on the highway and that is a scary feeling. 3 – Problem: Below are a few links with people having similar problems along with Recall reports: Power Steering Failure https://www.coloradofans.com/threads/power-steering-failure.241338/ Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon recalled for power steering failure https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/chevy-colorado-gmc-canyon-recall-power-steering/ 4 – The component in my truck has not been inspected yet. 5 – The Power steering and StabiliTrak warning turn on in the dashboard at the same time the power staring stiffens, no warning ahead of time.

my power steering will stop working intermittently. this can occur when first starting the vehicle or it can occur when traveling down the road. putting the vehicle in park and shutting the engine off then restarting and sometimes the steering comes back and sometimes it doesn't. lost steering again last week, drove approximately 10 miles and stopped by a local store. came out and started the vehicle and steering came back but the stabililink system light stayed on and the truck pulls to the left traveling down the highway. the problem is intermittent. the chevy dealer told me can't be repaired because they cannot replicate the condition. even though the service codes are set in the ECU. this has been going on for approximately 1 year or longer. extremely dangerous to drive this vehicle. no help from dealer

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the power steering assist failed, and the steering wheel was difficult to maneuver. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle to correct the failure. The failure occurred intermittently on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the dealer could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000.

The power steering failed. Specifically, the Chevrolet dealer tells me the steering gear torque sensor failed. According to the dealer, the torque sensor can't be repaired. The whole steering gear assembly has to be replaced. The cost would be $2,066.29. I will have to pay a return core charge if I want to keep the failed part. Luckily, the steering gear torque sensor failed while I was stopped. However, I had to travel several blocks and make several turns before I could get off the road. Each turn required substantial effort and extra time and turning area. If traffic had been any heavier or going any faster, I could easily have been hit and had a serious accident while I tried to get my truck off the road. I can't imagine how dangerous it would have been if this had failed while I was traveling at a higher rated of speed. The dealer confirmed the torque sensor has failed and i have no power steering. No one has inspected my part yet. There was a recall of 60,000 vehicles in April 2021 of the Chevy Colorado model year one year earlier than my truck, 2015, for the exact same issue. There were no warning before the fail. As I sat idling, I suddenly got a message on the screen that i had a power steering problem and driving would be dangerous. That was the moment at which I had no power steering.

Nov 2021

When driving at both slow(less than 5mph) to 35mph the truck's power steering light and Stabilitrak lights on the dashboard lit up then the power steering itself turned off. Making it VERY difficult to drive and turn the vehicle. Once I was able to pull over I turned the engine off, removed the key and restarted the vehicle and the steering mechanism was back on and working. It did this twice to me so far and I am concerned about the safety of the vehicle due to the difficulty in steering when the power steering and Stabilitrak shut down. I have not had the vehicle inspected by the dealership/manufacture since I was told it is not a recall item that will be reimbursed and I would be charged the diagnostic.

Without warning, my power steering shut down while driving on a city street. Turning the vehicle became very difficult resulting in a significant safety issue. A Stabilitrack warning message came on at the same time the steering went out. It is my understanding that GM has known about this for several years but has not ordered any recalls for the 2016 model.

The vehicle’s power steering turns off while driving it. If you pull over and turn the vehicle off for a little bit upon turning it on again power steering will be restored and the warning will be gone. The problem is intermittent and does not provide any system codes when a code reader inserted. The issue is prominent and is a known recall for the 2015 models built in early 2015. Many owners of 2016 models have reported the same issue and the dealer has said the fix is replacing the steering rack but since there is no recall it is not covered.

A few months ago, just as I was about to go into the mountains, my power steering went out. I was able to pull over into a turn out, it took all my strength to get the wheel turned. turned the ignition off for a few minutes and when I restarted the truck all was well. Went to dealer "bad battery" $250 later truck was ok for a couple months. Last week steering went out FOUR days in a row. Research shows that GM knows the problem is with an electrical connector in the steering assy. Dealer ship is 25 miles through the mountains. I feel a little uneasy about the trip.

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed while making a turn, the steering wheel locked in place, and a warning message illuminated on the instrument panel stating that the power steering was disabled. The contact was able to manually pull the vehicle over to the side of the road, waited a few minutes, and then restart the vehicle before continuing to drive to the residence. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have the vehicle inspected however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

I experience frequent loss of power steering while driving that almost caused an accident on the freeway. This happened consecutive days. Other times upon starting vehicle the alert of stabilizer track would turn on in the dashboard. I followed the manual instructions and it did not improve. There were days I could not use my vehicle at all leaving me to ask for a ride to places or being stranded, as well. I brought my vehicle to the chevy dealership today and they are going through my warranty of which I have to pay my deductible. I think this should be a recall and I should not have to pay out of pocket, especially since there is a large number of owners outside of the 2015 recall who are having the same issues. Please resolve this and make it so that the customer does not have to pay.

I have had my 2016 Chevy Colorado Z71 now for almost a year. I keep loosing my power steering and stabilitrack while driving down the highway. I can turn the truck off for a few minutes and start it again then it is sometimes fine for a couple days or it just keeps going out. Was almost in serious accident from this issue. I have taken my truck in to my local Chevy dealer and said it needed some updates on the system, so they updated the system and it was fine for a couple days but the problem is still there, I keep loosing my power steering. They told me at was going to cost me $2000 to have it fixed. I do not see why I should have to pay that kind of money when it is clearly a safety issue that should of had a recall on. What can be done about the safety issue I am having with my truck?

Oct 2021

General Motors is recalling over 60,000 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks from the 2015 model year to fix a faulty part within the power steering assembly that could cause the trucks’ power steering to stop working. If the power steering fails while the vehicle is in motion, the driver may suddenly need to exert more effort to steer the vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash. This problem is especially pronounced at lower speeds, such as when maneuvering in a parking lot. A GM spokesperson told CR that the automaker is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this recall. The problem is due to a poor electrical connection within the power steering system. If the power steering fails, drivers may also notice an illuminated warning light on the instrument panel and hear a warning chime. The problem may occur while driving or immediately after the vehicle has been started. GM dealers will replace the faulty part free of charge as soon as replacement parts become available. ABOVE IS A DETAILED REFERENCE. I AM EXPERIENCING THIS ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. EVEN THOUGH MY CAR IS EXPERIENCING THIS EXACT PROBLEM, “my car does not fall into the specified model for a recall”
