The power steering quits working intermittently. It has always been extremely cold when it happens. So far, it has only happened when the vehicle has been started, then driven. Turning the ignition off, then on, does not fix the problem. So far, it eventually starts working again at a later start up. When it happened before, the problem had resolved itself when I took it to the dealership and they could not determine the cause & simply replaced the battery. Losing power steering is definitely a safety issue if turning a corner, etc., when it goes out. The last time, I drove 45 miles directly to the dealership and they put a code reader on it while it was happening. I'm taking it to them for repair(?) tomorrow. There have not been any inspections to-date. The "service power steering" warning did show up when the vehicle was started.
The power steering on our 2018 Chevy Colorado fails intermittently during driving.
While driving my 2018 Chevy Colorado with 42000 miles I noticed my vehicles steering would get stuck while making turns on the highway and local streets. The problem was intermittent and was getting worse. I didn't receive any warning lights or codes for this problem but realized I had to bring it to a Chevy dealer to try to resolve the issue because I was afraid to drive it any longer due to steering possibly locking up completely. The mechanic at Island Chevy in Staten Island said the electronic rack and pinion steering gear failed and I had to replace with a new one. The cost of the repair was $2700 dollars. I was very shocked by the price due to age of car, the low mileage and never doing any off road driving. I did have another mechanic look at this problem before Chevy did and couldn't pinpoint the exact issue at the time I brought it in. The mechanic told me to bring it to Chevy to hopefully pinpoint the problem and see if there were any recalls or warranties on it.
On 4/19/2023, upon turning on the truck, putting it into gear and starting to very slowly move forward a Power Steering Warning/Drive with caution came on. There was no power steering and it required driving very carefully because of the inability to make turns. The truck had to go in for service. Power steering is not covered under the power train warranty, which you would think it should be. The repair required a motor kit, steering gear, belt and reprogram/sensor reset. The truck had less than 40,000 miles on it, and it cost $1533.00
Power steering unexpectedly toggled on and off very quickly causing very uneven cornering. After this the truck then drove normally for a couple of miles before happening again at slow speed. Mechanic was able to recreate but due to the intermittent nature cannot diagnose it. Seems like there was an issue with 2015/2016 Colorado's that sounds similar with a faulty electrical connection. Have gone 1 day now without the issue repeating but unsure if/when it will happen again.
The steering just stop work and started jerking?
STEERING WHEEL CONSTANTLY SHAKES AND VEERS ON ROADWAY DEALER CHANGED TORQUE CONVERTER BUT ISSUE STILL. HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING ANYWHERE FROM 35 MPH TO 70 MPH CITY STREET OR HIGHWAY DOES NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE FEELS LIKE STEERING CONTROL COULD BE LOST WHILE DRIVING
WHILE DRIVING, SPECIFICALLY WHEN MAKING TURNS AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD GET JAMMED UP AND BE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN BACK TO COMPLETE A TURN/GET STRAIGHTENED OUT. HAPPENS ON BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS. FIRST HAPPENED ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO, JUST ONE TIME WHILE EXITING MY DRIVEWAY. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND BACK ON AND IT SEEMED TO GO AWAY. IT IS NOW VERY CLEAR THAT IT IS MECHANICAL IN NATURE, SOMEWHERE CLOSE TO THE STEERING WHEEL IN THE CONSOLE. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT NEXT WEEK WITH THE DEALERSHIP, I WILL UPDATE WITH THE FINDINGS.
WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION I GET E RATTLE THOUGHT MY STEERING COLUMN DOWN INTO MY PEDDLE,. I CANN FELL THE RATTLE THROUGH THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT. IT HAPPENS ALOT MORE ON ROUGH ROADS, FOR EXAMPLE MY DRIVE WAY IS GRAVEL, EVERYTIME I COME HOME INTO MY DRIVEWAY I FEEL THE RATTLE. IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE MY TIRES, BUR MORE SO MY WHOLE STEERING SHAFT. YOU CAN ALSO SEE THE SHAKE IN THE STEERING WHEEL IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY AT IT. I HAVE ADDRESSED THIS WITH MY DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING IT. BUT THEY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T RECREATE THE NOSIE SO THEY COULDN'T EVEN CHECK THE STEERING SHAFT FOR ME. I DON'T FEEL SAFE. AND I WANT A RECALL FOR THIS.
