Check engine light came on. Display stated that the engine will run at reduced power which meant we had to Limp home at 15 MPH which put us in a dangerous situation. I read the code and it was P2122. Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch “D” Circuit Low Input. This indicates that there is a problem with the accelerator pedal. I replaced the pedal myself at a cost of $114.00. I eventually found a technical service bulletin that admitted that there is a problem with the accelerator pedal on 2016 to 2018 GM vehicles and there was a program that was replacing the pedal until 2020. I called GM customer service and they said there was nothing they would do about it since the program expired in 2020.
During driving on the highway, the car went into reduced power mode and speed was limited to 30 MPH. This was during driving on highways with 55 MPH or 65 MPH speed limits and could have resulted in an accident. My daughter was driving the car on all 3 occasions which makes this problem even more upsetting. The same part has been replaced 3 times (refer to receipts) relating to the accelerator pedal 3.451 N. This is a MAJOR DEFECT that is reoccurring. NHTSA needs to take action on this safety defect with General Motors for a corrective repair. I see this has been reported before on this website by others. You immediately action on this matter is appreciated.
About 2 years ago I began having issues with my 2017 Chevy Malibu right before I hit my 100k mile extended warranty. The error message "Engine Power Reduced" appeared on the dash while driving on the interstate and my car began rapidly decelerating on its own. I had no where to get off the interstate and pulled over on the side. I shut my car off for a couple minutes, restarted and went on my way for about 30 seconds when it happened again. This continued making my normal 45 minute commute home far longer. I took it into the dealership right away and the replaced the accelerator sensor. Problem solved for just over a year when it happened again in February 2022. The car was no longer in warranty so we took it to our local mechanic who said it was the same issue. We replaced the sensor for a second time. Now, November 2022 and it is happening AGAIN. This is not a cheap repair and is a major safety concern when driving at high speeds and the car decides to rapidly decelerate, not allowing me to drive more that 20mph. I live in Wisconsin where roads are slick in the winter. Losing control of the cars speed is a serious safety concern for myself, anyone in the car with me and those driving behind me. I understand this is a well known issue with the models between 2016-2018 but GM has failed to recall these vehicles. Why? Why is nothing being done about this? 3 times in 2 years is ridiculous and there are thousands of cars that have reported this exact issue. Please help.
Upon leaving work and gaining speed to 40mph I received a dash notification specifying engine power reduced and my mileage went down abruptly to 20mph. My check engine light came on and the power steering light appeared on my dash with the engine power reduced notification. I was not able to accelerate past 20 mphs.
The accelerator pedal position sensor failed causing reduced engine power mode. This happened on the highway with the speed limit of 55 which reduced my speed to 20 mph while around other vehicles. This put the safety of myself and my two children at risk because cars behind me didn’t expect a sudden change of speed along with myself. Having no warning is insanely scary. This problem is apparently not a recall on my car but yet I’ve found the gm recall online for Chevy Malibus years 2016-2018. This hasn’t caused an incident yet but I have seen MAJOR complaints and how this is a reoccurring problem which isn’t surprising to me because I had a 2012 Chevy Equinox before this with the SAME issue. Having this happen twice is ridiculous in my opinion. This happened two weeks after I bought the used car from a dealership it only had 59,000 something miles but I am disappointed as to how this is costing me already. This makes me never want Chevy or GM again.
My check engine light came on and I had reduced power and could not speed up. I have seen other with same problem 2017 chevy Malibu. This needs investigated big time before someone gets hurt. Should be a recall on this.
MY CAR WILL SAY "ENGINE POWER REDUCED" AND IT WILL NOT LET ME ACCELERATE AFTER IT HAPPENS. AFTER I SHUT MY CAR OFF AND BACK ON, THE ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COMES ON.
Throttle Position Sensor is falfuctioning. Class action law suit against this already. Chevy Malibu Class Action Lawsuit is Hutchinson v. General Motors LLC, Case No. 8:19-cv-01551, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. Vehicle decelerates at highway speeds down to 20 mph and engine power reduce comes across the screen. Has almost caused me to be in three accidents. Need to recall all malibus and have this part replaced before someone is killed.
AS I WAS TURNING LEFT FROM A STOP LIGHT ACCELERATING ON THE INTERSTATE ON RAMP FROM 20 TO 40 MPH (APPROXIMATELY) THE "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" CAME ON, THE ENGINE SLOWED DOWN AND LOST POWER, AND "TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT" CAME ON EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NOT ENGAGED. MY SPEED CONTROL DISENGAGED AND WOULD NOT WORK ON CRUISE CONTROL. WHEN I PULLED IN MY GARAGE (APPROXIMATELY 8 MI) SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTARTED ALL WARNING LIGHTS CLEARED AND EVERYTHING RESET. THIS CONDITION HAPPENED TO ME TWICW IN THE SAME DAY. THE SUDEEN LOSS OF POWER IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE.
CAR KEEPS GOING INTO REDUCE POWER MODE 2 TO 3 TIMES A DAY HAPPENS ON THE HIGHWAY CONSTANTLY VERY DANGEROUS WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER CHEVY AGIAN
WHILE DRIVING AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS THE VEHICLE HAS NOW FLASHED WARNING (REDUCED ENGINE SPEED) AND COMPLETELY DROPPED VEHICLE BELOW 40 MPH. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE LAST WEEK WITH POSSIBLE RESULTS OF GETTING IN A CRASH. I SAFELY MOVED VEHICLE TO SHOULDER AND TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED VEHICLE. THE ISSUED RESOLVED ITSELF THE FIRST TIME THEN A WEEK LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN WITH NO FIX AFTER THE SHUT OFF AND RESTART. I HAVE READ FORUMS ON THIS ISSUE WITH 2016-2018 MODELS. I AM LOOKING TO SEE IF THERE IS A SAFETY RECALL TO GET THE DEFECTIVE PART FIXED FROM AN AUTHORIZED CHEVY DEALERSHIP.
WHILE I WAS AT THE HIGHWAY I WAS TRYING TO PASS ANOTHER CAR, BUT WHILE I STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. ENGINE POWER REDUCE WITH ENGINE LIGHT ON CAME UP WITH CODE P2138 AND MY CAR STARTED LOOSING IT'S SPEED. ITS NOT THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENS , IT HAS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES. THIS CODE IS GETTING ANNOYING AND I HAVE SEEN MANY CASES WITH OTHER CUSTOMERS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AND THERE'S NO SOLVING TO THIS PROBLEM.
STARTED LAST NOVEMBER 2019 I WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND SUDDENLY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN A ENGINE POWER REDUCE COMES ON AND MY CAR STARTS TO SLOW DOWN. TOOK TO CHEVY AND WAS TOLD THEY COULD NOT TEST THE DIAGNOSTIC BECAUSE MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS NO LONGER ON. FAST FORWARD TO THIS SEPTEMBER 2020 AND IT STARTED UP AGAIN AND HAS BEEN ON AND OFF SINCE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT HAPPENS AT ANY POINT IM DRIVING WHETHER IT'S ON THE FREEWAY OR SMALL ROAD. I'M HAVING TO PULL OVER AND TURN MY CAR OFF! I HAVE TEENAGE DAUGHTERS AND 2 SMALL BOYS THAT I HAVE IN MY CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND IT'S VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS! SO TODAY DECEMBER 15, 2020 I TOOK IT BACK TO CHEVY AND GETTING IT CHECKED. I WAS TOLD IT COULD TAKE UP TO 5 DAYS AND I'M REALLY HOPING THIS IS A FACTORY RECALL DUE TO THE SAFETY OF THIS HAPPENING WHILE DRIVING AND DRIVING AT FAST SPEED ON THE FREEWAY!
IT REDUCES POWER TO THE EGINE
I PURCHASED MY 2017 MALIBU FROM JUD KUHN IN SC, IT HAD 40,000 MILES WHEN PURCHASED. WEEK 2 I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT HIT THE GAS TO TAKE OFF THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T MOVE SO I HIT THE GAS A LITTLE HARDER STILL NOTHING THEN SUDDENLY IT JERKED AND TOOK OFF FAST. I THOUGHT MAYBE MY FOOT WASNT ON THE HAS RIGHT. THE NEXT DAY I GOT IN THE CAR TO BACK OUT MY DRIVE WAY AND IT DID IT AGAIN THE SAME EXACT WAY. THE SAME DAY THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND ONSTAR SENT ME A EMAIL ABOUT A EMISSION ISSUE. I CALLED THE CAR DEALER TOLD THEM ABOUT THE ACCELERATION ISSUE AND THE ENGINE LIGHT. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT OUT . A FEW DAYS LATER THE LIGHT RETURNED AND I CALLED AGAIN. THIS TIME THEY SERVICED IT STATING THE CAR NEEDED A COMPUTER UPDATE AND CHARGED ME 100 DOLLARS AND STATED THEY COULDNT FIND THE PROBLEM WITH ACCELERATION AND THE UPDATE MAY HAVE FIXED IT. SUNDAY OCT 11TH I WENT TO LEAVE ME HOUSE AGAIN AND THE CAR WOULDN'T MOVE THE SAME THING HAPPENED HIT THE GAS WOULDN'MTOVE THEN TOOK OFF. I GOT OUT OF THE DRIVE WAY ONTO THE ROAD AND IT DID IT AGAIN. AT THIS POINT I'M SCEPTICAL ABOUT THE DEALER AS WELL AS THE VEHICLE AND I HAVE CHILDREN AND AM AFRAID THAT ONE DAY I WILL PULL OUT INFRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND MAY BE HIT BECAUSE OF THE ACCELERATION ISSUES. I'M CALLING THE DEALER AGAIN TODAY
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND ENGINE POWER REDUXE LIGHT CAME ON DASH. VEHICLE DECELERATED RAPIDLY ON MAJOR HIGHWAY WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED BY SEMI TRACTOR TRIAILER. WAS ABLE TO TURN CAR OFF AND IT WENT AWAY. BUT HAS RETURNED NEXT DAY. I CONTACTED GM 09/21/20 AMD THEY STATED THEY WERE AWARE OF ONGOING ISSUES AND I COULD BRING IT IN TO GET LOOKED AT BUT WOULD HAVE TO PAY A DIAGNOSTIC FEE
WHILE DRIVING IN HEAVY INTERSTATE TRAFFIC MY VEHICLE BEGAN TO IDLE ROUGHLY AND CUT OFF TWICE IN TRAFFIC. ONCE IT CRANK FULLY IT ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED JUST BARELY MISSING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. WHEN I WENT TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE I WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS A WIDE KNOWN ISSUE WITH NO RECALL IN PLACE. I COULD HAVE LOST MY LIFE THAT DAY. *TR
I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT AT 47MPH ON A MAJOR STREET IN DENVER AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. AT THE SAME TIME, THE DISPLAY READ "ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED" AND I LOST ALL ACCELERATION. MY SPEED DROPPED TO ABOUT 20MPH VERY QUICKLY (5 TO 8 SECONDS). LUCKILY THERE WAS RELATIVELY LIGHT TRAFFIC. I PULLED INTO AN AUTOZONE THAT WAS AT THE NEXT INTERSECTION AND THEY READ THE ERROR CODE P2138. COME TO FIND OUT THIS SHOWS AN ERROR WITH THE THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION CENSOR. I GOT BACK IN MY CAR TO DRIVE HOME AND WITHIN 30 SECONDS, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF AND MY CAR RAN LIKE NORMAL. I'M STILL VERY WORRIED ABOUT THIS SENSOR HOWEVER. WHEN I LOOKED THIS UP ONLINE TONIGHT, I CAME TO FIND OUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM YET CHEVY HAS DECIDED NOT TO RECALL THIS PART. DOING MORE RESEARCH LEAD ME TO THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT WHICH HAS BEEN BY ROTHSCHILD V. GENERAL MOTORS LLC, CASE NO. 1:19-CV-05240, IN THE U.S. DISTRICT COURT FOR THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK. FROM WHAT I READ, AND KNOWING THAT I DRIVE 35,000 MILES PER YEAR FOR WORK, I BELIEVE THIS COULD BE A HUGE IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN WHEN I'M DOING 75+MPH ON THE INTERSTATE. I URGE THE NHTSA TO REVIEW THIS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION CAREFULLY AND STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU HAVE CHEVY DO THE RIGHT THING AND GET THIS PART FIXED AND REPLACED TO KEEP US DRIVERS SAFE!!

TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP, AND DISCOVERED THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR TO BE FAULTY, CURSORY RESEARCH ON INTERNET PROVIDED MULTIPLE EXAMPLES OF ISSUE AMONG OTHER OWNERS.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO PAGE CHEVROLET (6500 LITTLE RIVER TURNPIKE, ALEXANDRIA, VA) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE INTERNAL PARTS OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY WERE DEFORMED AND CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS REPLACED AND THE FAILURE WAS REMEDIED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED APPROXIMATELY EIGHT MONTHS LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO OURISMAN CHEVROLET (18201 OLD RICHMOND HWY, ALEXANDRIA, VA) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,621.
MY VEHICLE HAS 6X,XXX MILES ON IT. I FIRST ENCOUNTERED A "REDUCED ENGINE POWER" MESSAGE ON NOVEMBER 27, 2019 AFTER DRIVING 15 MILES, TURNING THE CAR OFF FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES, AND STARTING THE CAR AGAIN. I CALLED ON-STAR TO RECEIVE A DIAGNOSTIC REPORT, WHICH RETURNED A P2138 CODE. I LIMPED THE CAR HOME ON A RURAL ROUTE WITH REDUCED POWER. ONCE HOME, THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES. WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON, THERE WAS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BUT IT RAN FINE. THE LIGHT EVENTUALLY TURNED OFF. THE CAR RAN FINE UNTIL THE EVENING OF MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2019. THIS TIME THE REDUCED ENGINE POWER CONDITION OCCURRED AS I WAS IN TRAFFIC COMMUTING HOME FROM WORK, MOVING AT A LOW SPEED. LUCKILY THE ROAD WASN'T BUSY AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO A GAS STATION. I POWERED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON, AND IT RAN FINE ALL THE WAY HOME. BASED ON SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I BELIEVE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR IS FAILING. THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIDESPREAD ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES. I WILL BE REPLACING THE PART ON MY OWN. THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS VERY HARD TO FIND, SUPPORTING MY SUSPICION THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD AND LIKELY AN ISSUE THAT GM IS AWARE OF.
WHILE DRIVING IN THE HIGH WAY WARNING ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH ENGINE REDUCED POWER AND MY GAS PEDAL STOPPED RESPONDING AND MY SPEED WAS REDUCED DRAMATICALLY WHILE DRIVING ALMOST CAUSED ME TO CRASH. I TOOK MY CAR TO MECHANIC SHOP AND IT HAS BEEN THERE FOR OVER 2 WEEKS BECAUSE THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER WITH NO STATUS. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT IT IS NO LONGER COVERED OVER 36,000. MY CAR HAS 37,000 ON IT.
