TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF POWER, JERKED, AND THE WRENCH ICON ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT MANAGED TO VEER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED, IT RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 40,000.

ON AUGUST 31, 2015 I WAS LEAVING AN AIRPORT AND ACCELERATING TO MERGE ONTO A HIGHWAY. I BELIEVE I WAS CLOSE TO 60MPH WHEN I FELT SOMETHING IN MY CAR CHANGE. ALL OF THE ELECTRONICS WERE STILL WORKING, SO I KNEW IT WAS NOT AN ISSUE WITH MY BATTERY. THE WRENCH LIGHT APPEARED AND I REALIZED I WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO ACCELERATE. I IMMEDIATELY GOT OVER TO THE RIGHT LANE AND BY THIS TIME MY SPEED HAD DROPPED TO 40MPH. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OVER AND PUT MY CAR INTO PARK. THE RPMS SPIKED AND I TURNED MY CAR OFF. AFTER WAITING A MINUTE OR SO I WAS ABLE TO RESTART MY CAR WITH NO PROBLEM. I GOT BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY AND TOOK MY EXIT. MAYBE 5-7 MILES FROM THE LOCATION OF THE FIRST INCIDENT, I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40MPH DOWN A 2-LANE STREET WHEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THIS TIME BOTH THE WRENCH LIGHT AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WERE ON. ONCE AGAIN I PULLED OVER, PUT MY CAR INTO PARK, THE RPM'S SPIKED HIGHER THIS TIME. I SHUT MY CAR OFF. I WAS AGAIN ABLE TO RESTART MY CAR RIGHT AWAY WITH NO PROBLEM. IN THE 9 DAYS SINCE THIS HAPPENED I HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM AGAIN. I AM EXTREMELY NERVOUS MY ENGINE WILL SHUT OFF ON A HIGHWAY AGAIN, IN A LOCATION WHERE I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PULL OVER SAFELY. WHEN I CALLED FORD THEY SAID MY WARRANTY COVERS THE THROTTLE BODY, SO THEY HAVE SCHEDULED THE THROTTLE BODY REPAIR FOR SEPTEMBER 11, 2015. THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM, AND I THINK FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL DRIVERS.

TOOK MY CAR INTO BICKFORD FFORD AND WAS TOLD THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THE LIGHT WASN'T ON SO THEY CAN'T GET A CODE. HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO GET GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THROTTLE BODY ISSUES IF THE LIGHT GOES AWAY WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED OFF? I CAN'T DRIVE THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENS SO HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO GET THIS COVERED BY FORD? I'M SUPPOSE TO DRIVE MY CAR WITH UNSAFE CONDITIONS UNTIL IT PERMANENTLY BREAKS DOWN? SEEMS LIKE A SCAM.

MY CAR SOMETIMES SUDDENLY JUST LOSING POWER. I COULD GET KILLED ON THE FREEWAY. FROM RESEARCHING A BIT I SEE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE THROTTLE BODY CONTROL. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWO TIME IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS. ONCE AS WE GET GETTING READY TO GET ON THE FREEWAY AND THE SECOND TIME AS WE WERE CROSSING A BUSY INTERSECTION, LUCKILY WE WERE ABLE TO GET ACROSS THE ROAD WITHOUT GETTING HIT. I AM AFRAID I HAVE BOUGHT AN UNSAFE CAR.

2010 FORD ESCAPE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE THROTTLE BODY ISSUES. *SMD THE CONSUMER SHE RECEIVED A LETTER REGARDING THE THROTTLE BODY, BUT DIDN'T THINK IT SOUNDED TOO SERIOUS. THE LETTER STATED ENGINE POWER AND VEHICLE SPEED WOULD BE REDUCED. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE HAD THE MISFORTUNE OF EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM ON MARCH 16, 2014. THE SPEED WAS NOT JUST REDUCED, BUT THE GAS PEDAL WAS INOPERABLE AND THE VEHICLE JUST COASTED TO A STOP, AS IF SHE HAD RUN OUT OF GAS. WHILE ON THE DECLINE OF THE ROAD I WAS ABLE TO COAST INTO THE FIRST LANE AND INTO A BREAK DOWN LANE AND INTO A PARKING LOT AT A VERY SLOW RATE OF SPEED BECAUSE ONCE YOU APPLIED THE BRAKES AND SLOWED DOWN YOU COULD NOT REGAIN ANY SPEED. I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE WITHOUT FAILURE WITHIN A FEW MINTUES BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT RUNNING RIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED AND THE SERPENTINE BELT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE DEALER. I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL ISSUE FOR FORD. I COULD HAVE BEEN HIT MULTIPLE TIMES ON RTE 1 TRYING TO GET MY VEHICLE OVER TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. *TR

I HAD NOT HAD MY VEHICLE FOR 3 MONTHS BEFORE EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, I WAS DRIVING AND MY SUV LOST POWER. EACH TIME, I HAD TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE, WAIT A FEW MINUTES, CUT THE CSUV OFF AND THEN BACK ON UNTIL THE CAR WOULD START AGAIN. THIS MADE MY TRAVEL VERY DANGEROUS ON THE HIGHWAY. TOOK MY SUV TO THE DEALERSHIP AND AT FIRST THEY COULD NOT FIND WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT BECAUSE THE ERROR HAD NOT REGISTERED. I HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON TO DISCOVER IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY. I HAD TO PAY OVER $300 TO GET IT REPLACED. IT TOOK AWHILE FOR FORD RAN OUT OF THE PART AND HAD TO ORDER IT FROM THEIR WAREHOUSE. LUCKILY, THE REPAIR SHOP WAS ABLE TO FIND A REPLACEMENT WITHIN 2 DAYS. AFTER HAVING THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED, IT TAKES A WHILE FOR THE SUV TO SHIFT INTO GEAR AND OFTEN FEELS LIKE IT IS STALLING OR DRAGGING. *TR

I WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON HWY 53, DOING 55 MPH WHEN THE CAR JUMPED OUT OF GEAR. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING AT IDLESPEED, BUT WHEN I DEPRESSED THE GAS PEDAL NOTHING HAPPENED. ALSO THE WRENCH LIGHT AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WHERE BOTH ON. I HAD TO PULL OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO AVOID TRAFFIC AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. I WAITED A MINUTE AND IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP WITH ONLY THE ENGINE LIGHT ON. THIS WAS THE 5TH TIME THIS HAPPENED IN 2 DAYS AND WAS THE SAME EACH TIME. I DROVE STRAIGHT TO THE DEALER WHERE I HAD BOUGHT IT AND THEY DID A CHECK AND RETRIEVED P2111 IN KOEC, THEN PERFORMED ETB INTERNAL IDS PINPOINT TEST. ETB OR THROTTLE BODY FAILED TEST. THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY AND MOTOR ASY, WHICH IS A KNOWN PROBLEM, AND CHARGED ME $432.65. I BELIEVE FORD SHOULD HAVE REPLACED THIS AT NO COST, SINCE THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM. *TR

DRIVING AROUND 60MPH AND CAR STARTED TO SHAKE AS I TRIED TO ACCELERATED TO PULL OVER I COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO ACCELERATE. I COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE RODE AND PUT ON MY HAZZARD LIGHTS. I TURNED THE CAR OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AND PLACED A CALL TO MY SON TO COME GET ME. I STARTED IT AGAIN AND TRIED TO GO AND IT STARTED TO ACCELERATE AGAIN AND THEN CALLED HUB CITY FORD WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR. THEY SAID THEY HAD SEVERAL PEOPLE CALL WITH THE PROBLEM BUT THERE WAS NO RECALL AS OF YET AND IT RUNS AROUND $765.00 TO REPAIR. I ASKED ABOUT WARRANTY AND THEY SAID THIS PARTICULAR PART WAS 3 YEAR OR 30,000 MILES. I EXCEEDED THE MILEAGE. *TR

WHILE ENGINE IS UNDERLOAD REPRODUCED BY PRESSING BOTH GAS AND BRAKES SIMULTANEOUSLY; AT ACCELERATION AND BETWEEN 30-40 MPH THE ENGINE MAKES AN AUDIBLE THUMPING NOISE. FORD HAS BEEN UNABLE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM AND CALLS IT NORMAL. THEY INDICATED I SHOULD DRIVE MORE AGGRESSIVELY (FASTER AND FORCING THE ENGINE TO SHIFT GEARS) IN ORDER TO AVOID THIS CONDITION. OUR 2010 FORD ESCAPE HAS HAD THE EXACT PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN THE NHTSA CASE NUMBER PE 13003. OUR VEHICLE HAS 43,000 MILES ON IT AND DRIVING TO WORK ON A FAST MOVING CITY STREET AT APPROX 45-50 MPH AND THE CAR LOST ALL THROTTLE CONTROL AND WENT INTO THE DESCRIBED "LIMP MODE", NO WARNING OR CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON. WE HAD A VERY DIFFICULT TIME CONTROLLING THE CAR AND GETTING IT OFF THE ROAD WHILE TRYING TO DODGE TRAFFIC. LIMP MODE DOES NOT DESCRIBE THE AVAILABLE POWER. AT 900 RPM YOU CAN WALK FASTER THAN THE CAR WILL DRIVE... THE TRANSMISSION IS ALSO ACTING AS AN ENGINE BRAKE AND SLOWING THE CAR EVEN FASTER SO I POPPED IT INTO NEUTRAL AND WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WE TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND RESTARTED AND THE CAR STARTED FINE. PUT IT IN GEAR AND ACCELERATED TO APPROX 20 MPH AND IT WENT INTO LIMP MODE AGAIN AND THIS TIME THE SMALL WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON IN THE DASH. A GEARBOX OR TRANSMISSION PROBLEM? LUCKILY WE WERE STILL ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD SO WE AGAIN TURNED OFF THE CAR AND RESTARTED TO RESET (WRENCH LIGHT WENT OUT) AND IT WORKED FINE FOR THE NEXT 14 MILES AS WE WERE GOING TO THE FORD DEALER. JUST AS WE WERE ARRIVING IT DID IT A THIRD TIME, THIS TIME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEY WERE ABLE TO RETRIEVE THE DTC CODE OF 2112 AND DIAGNOSED A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY. THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY RECALL AND CHARGED US $589 DOLLARS FOR THE REPAIR (PART, LABOR, DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND CALIBRATION OF THE COMPUTER). WE HAVE BEEN THE ONLY OWNERS OF THIS CAR AND IT HAS HAD ALL OF ITS NORMAL SERVICE DONE. AT 43K MILES IT IS, FOR ALL PURPOSES, STILL A NEW CAR. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE I WAS DRIVING IN NORMAL CONDITIONS AT 40 MPH AND THE ENGINE LOST POWER COMPLETELY AND A SMALL WRENCH LIT UP ON THE DASHBOARD. I PULLED OVER SAFELY AND SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN, WAITED A MINUTE AND THE ENGINE STARTED RIGHT UP. THE SAME THING BEGAN HAPPENING AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. IN TRAFFIC, ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS PROBLEM HAS ALMOST CAUSED SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. I CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT COULD BE. I LOOKED THE PROBLEM UP AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT! *TR

THE THROTTLE BODY WAS DEFECTIVE LEADING TO A SITUATION WHERE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. IT WOULD IMMEDIATE GO INTO A CRAWL MODE JUST ENOUGH TOGET ME TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I WAS ABLE TO TURN OFF AND RESTART THE VEHICLE ONLY TO HAVE IT HAPPEN AGAIN A FEW MILES LATER. I TOOK TO THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY, THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY AT A COST OF $440.00. *TR

THROTTLE BODY SENSOR MALFUNCTIONED, AND ACCELERATOR PEDDLE WENT LIMP. DEALERSHIP IS TELLING US IT'S NOT UNDER WARRANTY, WE'RE UNDER THE 36,000MI BUT OVER ON THE 3 YEARS HOWEVER NOW I'M READING THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. *TR

WHILE ACCELERATING AND SWITCHING FROM FIRST GEAR, ENGINE SLOWS TO ROUGH IDLE, NO THROTTLE RESPONSE, WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THOUGH. SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO CREEP TO THE SIDE OF ROAD BUT NO REAL POWER OR CONTROL OF THROTTLE. IDLE AND REV THE ENGINE AFTER RESTART ARE OK BUT SEEMS TO HAVE TROUBLE UNDER THE HEAVIER LOAD OF PULLING SECOND GEAR THEN RATHER THAN SWITCHING BACK TO FIRST THE SOFTWARE CRASHES OR SOMETHING. STUPID WAY TO HANDLE A PROBLEM ON FORDS END. *TR
