5.4L GAS ENGINE. SPARK PLUGS HAVE BLOWN OUT OF 2 DIFFERENT CYLINDERS IN 2 MONTHS. I HAVE FOUND ONLY THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR SEVERAL MODELS WITH THIS ENGINE INCLUDING THE F-150. FORD HAD DONE NOTHING TO ADDRESS THIS FAULTY ENGINE DESIGN. BOTH TIMES MY PLUGS BLEW OUT I WAS ACCELERATING FROM A STOP WHILE TURNING LEFT.

I HAVE A FORD 1998 EXPEDITION, EDDIE BAUER EDITION. IT HAS A 5.4 LITER ENGINE WITH ALUMINUM HEADS. THREE TIMES I'VE HAD A HELICOIL BLOWN OUT LEAVING ME STRANDED. NOW A SPARK PLUG HAS BLOWN OUT BREAKING TWO COILS. FORD HAS MADE THIS VEHICLE FOR YEARS WITH THIS ENGINE. ALL WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS OF COMPONENTS BLOWING OUT OF THE ENGINE. I FEEL IT IS FORD'S RESPONSIBILITY TO START A RECALL AND FIX THIS DEFECT.

#2 SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF 5.4L 2 V V8. WAS ON HIGHWAY AT TIME. HAD TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER AND DISCONNECT FUEL AND SPARK FOR THAT CYLINDER. WAS OVER 100KM FROM HOME, COULDNT AFFORD TO TOW VEICLE SO I HAD TO DRIVE IT THE REMAINDER OF THE DISTANCE HOME. INSPECTED TODAY, THERE IS NO THREADS LEFT. NOW NEED TO DRILL AND TAP HEAD, INSTALL HELICOIL/TIMESERT AND HOPE FOR THE BEST.

I HAVE A 1998 FORD EXPEDITION THE SPARK PLUGS NUMBER 3 AND 4 KEEP GOING OUT I HAVE DONE EVERYTHING I CAN OWN MY BUDGET TO TRY AND FIX BUT THE PROBLEM KEEP HAPPEN. BLEW A SPARK PLUG, STRIPPED THE THREADS RIGHT OUT OF THE ALUMINUM HEADS (HORRIBLE DESIGN). NOT AN ISSUE FOR NEWER VEHICLES UNTIL THEY REACH 140-190,000 MILES, AND NOW I SEE ONLINE THAT IT IS A HUGE ISSUE FOR THOUSANDS OF OWNERS OF THE 4.6 & 5.4L ENGINES. BREACHING THE HEADS EXPOSES FUEL TO THE SPARK AND COULD CREATE DANGEROUS FIRES. THE FIXES ARE EITHER TEMPORARY OR VERY COSTLY, THIS SHODDY DESIGN SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY FORD NOW THAT ALL OF THESE VEHICLES ARE REACHING HIGHER MILEAGES AND STILL ON THE ROAD. FOR FORD TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS BY USING ALUMINUM HEADS IS NOT WORTH THE SAFETY OF THOUSANDS OF LOYAL CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE ALWAYS STOOD BY FORD. #6 SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF CYL HEAD. REINSTALLED AND REPLACED COIL SINCE IT BROKE MOUNT. PUT BACK IN SERVICE AND NEXT PLUG IN BANK (#7) BLEW WITHIN 10 MILES AT APPROX SAME SPEED. WHEN SEARCHING THE INTERNET THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH FORDS MODULAR ENGINE PRIOR TO 04. SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY -- VERY DANGEROUS. HAD CHILDREN IN CAR. HAD TO BE TOWED. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE--5.4L-- IN OTHER FORDS AS WELL. OUR 1998 FORD EXPEDITION WITH THE 5.4 V8 TRITON ENGINE HAD ANOTHER SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, IT WAS THE #3 CYLINDER PLUG THEN AND LAST WEEK IT WAS THE #6 CYLINDER PLUG, I SEARCHED THE INTERNET CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND HUNDREDS IF NOT MORE OF THE SAME ISSUES, AND NO ONE IS MAKING FORD DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS, JUST THOUGHT MY VOICE IN THIS MATTER MIGHT HELP. PLEASE IF THERE WAS EVER AN INSTANCE OF A RECALL THIS IS SURELY ONE. 3RD TIME WE HAVE HAD A SPARK PLUG EJECTION FROM THE PASSENGER ENGINE HEAD OF OUR 1998 FORD EXPEDITION WITH A TRITON 5.4 LITER ENGINE. I OWNED A FORD F150 AND HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM TWICE. I DID RESEARCH AND CALLED A FEW ASE MASTER MECHANICS THAT ARE RATED AS AMERICA'S #1 AND #4 MECHANICS IN THE NATION, AND WAS TOLD IT IS THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM FORDS TRITON ENGINES HAVE EVER HAD, AND THEY SEE THESE PROBLEMS ON A DAILY BASIS, YET FORD DOES NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. FORD DESPERATELY NEEDS TO RECALL THESE ENGINES, THEY ARE A HAZARD, AND THE SPARK PLUG EJECTS WITH EXPLOSIVE POWER DAMAGING NEARBY COMPONENTS ON IT'S WAY OUT OF THE ENGINE. FORD REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS COMMON MANUFACTURE DEFECT. TO FIX THIS PROBLEM NEW HEADS NEED TO BE INSTALLED ON THE ENGINE. THE QUICK HELICAL STYLE SLEEVE INTO THE STRIPPED SPARK PLUG THREADS HAS A FAILURE RATE OF 100%. AGAIN THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AND THE MAGNITUDE CAN BE SEEN ALL OVER THE INTERNET BY SEARCHING FORDS SPARK PLUG BLOWOUTS. LITERALLY 10'S OF THOUSANDS OF FORUMS, AND INSIGHT IN THIS PROBLEM IS AVAILABLE ONLINE, EXCEPT SUPPORT FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY. *LN

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SPARK PLUGS BLEW OUT OF THE ENGINE WHILE TRAVELING 65 MPH; THE CONTACT SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING UNDER THE HOOD. IN MARCH OF 2009 ONE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT, BUT IN AUGUST OF 2010 2 ADDITIONAL SPARK PLUGS BLEW OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE DEALER CONFIRMED THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 160000.

A SPARK PLUG WAS EJECTED FROM THE CYLINDER HEAD. INTERIOR OF THE SUV FILLED WITH GAS FUMES. THERE WAS NOTHING NOTICEABLE PRIOR TO THIS OCCURRING. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS OCCURRED. THE MECHANIC OBTAINED THE REPAIR KIT TO RETHREAD THE CYLINDER HEAD AT A COST OF $360.00. THE WORK IS NOT GUARANTEED...IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN, THE HEAD WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. *TR

1998 FORD EXPEDITION 4X4 4.6L, THE POOR QUALITY STEEL USED FOR THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS AND BOLTS RUST VERY FAST. MINE RESULTED IN THE DRIVERSIDE BOLTS RUSTING AWAY CAUSING EXHAUST COMING DIRECTLY OUT OF THE ENGINE, ALSO THE EGR TUBE RUSTED OFF THE DRIVERS MANIFOLD CAUSING HOT EXHAUST TO BLOW TOWARD THE TOP OF THE ENGINE. ON THE PASSENGER SIDE THE MANIFOLD BOLTS/STUDS ALSO RUSTED AWAY CAUSING EXHAUST TO DISPERSE IN THE ENGINE BAY. ALSO ON THE PASSENGER SIDE THE MANIFOLD CRACKED ABOUT 3 INCHES LONG ON THE TOP OF THE MANIFOLD CAUSING HOT EXHAUST TO BLOW UPWARD TO THE UPPER ENGINE BAY. I CORRECTED THIS PROBLEM BY REPLACING THE BAD MANIFOLDS/STUDS WITH PACESETTER SHORTY HEADERS AND BOLTS, IT WAS THE CHEAPEST FIX. THE PACESETTER SHORTY HEADER KIT WAS $150 FROM WWW.SUMMITRACING.COM . THE TRUCK WAS EXTREMELY LOUD BEFORE I FIXED THIS PROBLEM AND I WAS PULLED OVER FOR IT BY THE POLICE 4 TIMES, THEY LET ME GO IF I PROMISED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. SINCE I FIXED THE PROBLEM THE TRUCK IS VERY QUIET AND I DON'T GET THREATENED WITH $75 TICKETS ANYMORE PLUS I HAVE THE PEACE OF MIND THE TRUCK WONT BURN TO THE GROUND WITH MY FAMILY IN IT FROM HOT LEAKING EXHAUST MANIFOLDS OR RUSTY FAILED STUDS/BOLTS. *TR

DRIVING OUR 1998 FORD EXPEDITION WITH A TRITON 5.4L V-8 HOME FROM A WEEKEND CAMPING TRIP, THE ENGINE BLEW A SPARK PLUG. WE WERE ON A VERY BUSY 5 LANE HIGHWAY WITH OUR THREE CHILDREN UNDER 6 YEARS OLD. WE SPENT NEARLY TWO HOURS ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK. I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON MALADY; ONE IN WHICH THE NHTSA HAS INVESTIGATED BEFORE. I UNDERSTAND THAT MANY OUTSIDE FORD MOTOR CORP FEEL THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW AND CREATES UNNECESSARY EMERGENCY EVENTS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. *TR

NUMBER #4 COIL PACK, ONCE AIR CONDITION IS TURNED ON DRIPPING WATER FROM LINES INTO SPARK PLUG AREA, THE #4 COIL PACK WILL THROUGH A CODE FOR A MISS-FIRE. I HAVE REPLACED THE COIL PACKS THROUGH OUT THE ENTIRE ENGINE RECENTLY AGAIN. I RAN THE AIR CONDITIONING FOR ABOUT ONE HOUR AND THE NEXT DAY I STARTED THE VEHICLE UP AND IT HAD A ROUGH IDLE. I DROVE APPROXIMATELY 6 MILES WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I HOOKED UP MY OBD2 TO SEE THE PROBLEM FOUND OUT THE NEW #4 COIL HAD MISFIRED ONCE AGAIN. I HAD THE SINGLE COIL PACK REPLACED WITH 45,000 THE FIRST TIME THEN I REPLACED THEM ALL AT 135,000. AND NOW I HAD TO REPLACE THE #4 COIL PACK AGAIN BY ITSELF AT 143,000. IT ONLY THROWS A MIS-FIRE ONCE I HAVE THE AIR CONDITION ON. *TR

1998 FORD EXPEDITION BLEW SPARK PLUG OUT OF THE HEAD WITH JUST A LITTLE OVER 85,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM THAT THE FACTORY RECOMMENDS TO REPLACE THE HEAD AT $2300.00. AND THEY SAID THIS WAS THE ONLY FIX. I TRADED THE VEHICLE IN FOR A HUGE LOSS. I ONLY HAD IT FOR LESS THAN A YEAR. BECAUSE I FOUND THAT THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM WITH FORDS AND NO-ONE WILL DO ANYTHING TO STOP THIS PROBLEM, I HAVE VOWED NEVER TO BY ANOTHER FORD AND WILL MAKE AS MANY PEOPLE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AS POSSIBLE. I NOW OWN AN ESCALADE AND HAVE PUT ON OVER 90,000 MILES WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS, NOT LIKE THE FORDS EXPENSIVE REPAIRS. THIS HAPPENED TO ME A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO AND I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A PLACE TO ENTER MY GRIPE BESIDES THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY, AND THIS WAS LIKE TALKING TO A WALL. MY FAMILY HAD BOUGHT FORDS SINCE THE 40'S, WHEN MY GRANDFATHER OWNED DEALERSHIPS.
