Additionally, the contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the brake pedal became stiff, and the vehicle failed to immediately stop. Additionally, the vehicle made an abnormal sound and stalled. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the spark plugs, and the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
ENGINE MAKES RATTLING NOISE AND MISSING BADLY
THE CAR TURNS OFF. I NEED TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK WAIT A FEW MINUTES THEN TURN THE CAR BACK ON AND IT WORKS. THE BAD THING IS IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
MY ENGINE SAID FAIL SAFE MODE. MY SPARK PLUGS GOT STUCK IN ENGINE COSTING ME 1000 TO FIX.

MY FORD EXPEDITION, WHILE DRIVING AT 40 MILES AN HOUR LOST POWER. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME IN 2 YEARS IT HAS HAPPENED. ON THE INFO CENTER IT STATED ENGINE FAIL SAFE MODE. THE THREE TIMES IT HAS HAPPENED HAS BEEN ON BACK ROADS.I CONSIDER THIS A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION . MY DEALER LOOKED AT IT THE FIRST TWO TIMES AND SAID THERE WERE NO CODES, THAT I WOULD NEED TO BRING IT IN SOONER. BUT THERE ARE NO LASTING RESULTS, AND IT STARTS RIGHT BACK UP.
VEHICLE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON. VEHICLE TURNS OFF WHEN SITTING IDLE. BROUGHT VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY FIXED IT, BUT AFTER LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP AND PAYING A LARGE BILL THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND STILL CUTS OFF WHEN JUST SITTING IDLE IN "DRIVE". SCARED THAT THIS CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IF SOMEONE BEHINDS ME DOESN'T REALIZE THAT MY VEHICLE CUTS OFF. *TR
THIS IS THE 4TH TIME IN 5 WEEKS THAT MY CAR HAS SHUT DOWN WHILE DRIVING AND IT SAYS "ENGINE FAIL SAFE MODE". IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP AFTER THE FIRST 3 INCIDENTS AND DIFFERENT THINGS HAVE BEEN DONE TO IT. I JUST GOT IT OUT OF THE SHOP AND IT HAPPENED THE 4TH TIME. SO IT'S GOING BACK TO SHOP. I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE, AND HAVE NOT BEEN IN A ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF IT SHUTTING DOWN. LOOKING ONLINE IT'S AMAZING HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME ISSUE. I HAVE HAD AN ENGINE CHECK LIGHT AND NO ONE CAN FIND THE PROBLEM. SOME MECHANICS TELL ME ITS ONE THING AND THE OTHERS SOMETHING ELSE. TOOK TO A.V FORD AND QUICKLANE IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD. MY TRUCK STAYED SEVERAL DAYS AT SHOP AND STILL CANT FIND PROBLEM. MECHANIC EVEN CALLED DETROIT PLANT TO GET ADVISE. STILL NOT RESOLVED. PAID TOO MUCH JUST TRYING TO FIGURE THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRONT RADIATOR HAD BECOME ROTTEN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.

THE ENGINE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE THROTTLE WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 117,000.
MY MOTHER HAD MY CAR WHEN THIS OCCURRED AND THE INCIDENT AND SUBSEQUENT RESEARCH SHOWING A DANGEROUS PATTERN AND NO RECALL OF THIS ISSUE HAS ME VERY CONCERNED. WHILE AT A RED LIGHT, THE ENGINE FAILSAFE MESSAGE FLASHED ACROSS THE DASH WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT ON WHILE MAKING LOUD ALERT BEEPS. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT GO. MY MOTHER PUT IT IN PARK AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. SHE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND DRIVE WITH NO ISSUES. MY CONCERN DOING RESEARCH ON THIS ISSUE IS THAT THIS CAN OCCUR WHILE IN MOTION. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED A MINUTE EARLIER OR LATER, IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENTS DURING HIGH SPEEDS OR LEFT TURNS. I AM NOW ALMOST FEARFUL FOR MYSELF AND OTHERS TO DRIVE THIS CAR. *TR
FAILURE OF CAM SHAFT AND VALVE, LIFTER PARTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RIGHT SIDE OF THIS 5.4L ENGINE. MOST LIKELY DUE TO VARIABLE CAM TIMING UNITS. 5.4 L ENGINE IN 2005 EXPEDITION, FIRST PLACED IN SERVICE IN DECEMBER 2004. RIGHT SIDE OF ENGINE BEGAN MAKING A TICKING NOISE WITHIN 30,000 MILES. DEALER SERVICE STATED TICKING NOISE IS NORMAL, NO ISSUES. NOISE CONTINUED. NOISE RECENTLY BECAME WORSE. RIGHT SIDE OF ENGINE. MILEAGE FOR VEHICLE IS AT 142,000 MILES. INDEPENDENT MECHANIC STATES HYDRAULIC LIFTER ISSUE, CAM SHAFT IS BAD. $1,200+ REPAIR. DOING RESEARCH ON VARIOUS CAR SITES REVEALS MANY ISSUES SIMILAR TO THIS WITH THE 5.4L FORD ENGINE. ISSUES STATED DEALT WITH: DEFECTIVE CYLINDER HEADS, FAILING CAM PHASERS, CAMSHAFT BEARINGS FAILING, FAILED CAM SOLENOIDS, THRUST BEARING FAILURE, VARIABLE CAM TIMING (VCT) FAILURE AND CAM SHAFT FAILURE DUE TO OTHER PARTS. THIS DEFECT SEEMS TO BE COVERED IN A TB PUT OUT BY FORD (TSB 05-15-8), BUT DID NOT INVOLVE A RECALL. THIS ISSUE HAS AFFECTED 100'S IF NOT 10,000'S OF EXPEDITION OWNERS. INITIATE AN INVESTIGATION AND I BELIEVE THAT YOU WILL AGREE FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL TO REPAIR OR REPLACE. *TR

GETTING ON FREEWAY AN AUDIBLE BIP AND A WARNING CAME ON SCREEN INDICATING TO CHECK ELECTRIC THROTTLE AND A FEW SECONDS LATER THE ENGINE DIED. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. HAD KIDS IN CAR. THIS SHOULD BE A MATTER FOR RECALL. *TR
