In March, 2024, as part of a mandatory Ford and NHTSA safety recall for a leaking master cylinder, we had our Ford Expedition serviced at Lugoff Ford, Lugoff, SC to replace the faulty brake parts. Ford Recall Reference: 22S11/22S11D - NHTSA Reference: 22V-150. At the time of the recall and replacement there was no indication of the master cylinder leaking. On [XXX] our brakes failed on a trip necessitating an emergency brake repair. The servicing shop found evidence that the master cylinder had failed, leaking brake fluid - the exact safety issue that the recall and repair in March 2024 was to fix. We are formally reporting this incident as a potential failure of a manufacturer's recall remedy. That a Ford-mandated safety repair failed in this manner indicates that the replacement parts or the repair procedures specified in the recall campaign are highly likely to be inadequate. This poses a significant risk to the thousands of other Ford Expedition owners who have had this recall service performed, as they may be unknowingly operating vehicles with a latent defect. We urge you to investigate the effectiveness of this recall and determine if other owners have experienced similar premature failures post-repair. This situation is unacceptable. A safety recall should increase a vehicle owner's confidence in their vehicle, not introduce a new failure point. We trusted Ford to correct a known defect, and that trust was broken. Repair due to recall miles: approx 150,000 Failure of brake system due to replaced part failure: approx 163,000 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My wife was driving the vehicle. While attempting to stop, the brakes failed. The brake warning light came on and alarmed. She was not able to stop safely without using the parking brake. Brake fluid was gone and completely drained into the brake booster. My family was completely at risk. Thankfully there were no injuries or damage. The vehicle was towed to a Ford dealership. The dealership diagnosed it as brake fluid pumping from brake cylinder into brake booster.

On [XXX], My 2017 Ford Expedition suddenly lost all brake fluid in the master cylinder, where it drained into the Brake Booster. We had no braking function whatsoever. I filled up with another quart of brake fluid, drained into brake booster as well. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer in Lagrange, GA, where the work was completed on 7/8/2024. I was preparing to drive my family home to FL when we noticed the issue. We had to stay an extra night in the hotel. Thank goodness we had not been on the road and were only leaving the hotel. There is already a recall for the same issue, with vehicles made through 1/31/2017. My vehicle, by VIN, was made on 2/3/2017 at the same plant. Ford is refusing to acknowledge the issue. Brake master cylinder rear seal failed and engine vacuum drew all fluid from reservoir into brake booster as vehicle idled in park. Both front and rear brakes were inoperable because one reservoir serves both systems and that reservoir was emptied by engine vacuum. Pedal went to floor with zero brake actuated. At highway speed this would result in a severe accident due to the rapid loss of fluid with no prior change in braking effort. Vehicle could only be slowed with parking brake. Ford dealer service department inspected and confirmed loss of fluid into booster. Brake warning light and low fluid message displayed as reservoir was drained by engine vacuum.

Brake Master Cylinder is LEAKING out the back of master cylinder and into brake booster, lost almost ALL of the brake fluid in short trip as soon as it started.. Its an Identical issue to current Recall 22S11 or 22S14 on many if not all 2016 2017 Expeditions. My truck was built at the same Kentucky plant that produced the trucks with this exact issue, build date [XXX] built in the same time frame the trucks have the issue . But Ford reports it as Not a recall.. Its Doing the EXACT SAME issue that is part of recall 22S14 and 22S11.. and is an incredible huge Safety Risk causing potential death to the driver or other motorist if the truck runs out of brake fluid .. Near total loss of brakes. Pulled in to a parking spot and brakes very squishy, upon returning brake light was on. No indication of brake fluid on ground. Added approximately 25oz of fluid topping off reservoir, upon returning home (1.5mi) the pedal travel was much longer than normal, and no fluid remaining in reservoir again. Replaced master cylinder and power booster. Upon removing the power booster was full of oil.

While driving down the highway, the low brake fluid light sounded and the brake light came on . we slowly loss brakes while driving down the HWy. We added brake fluid, which there was no brake fluid in there at all .When we added the fluid, we pump the brakes and they tighten . Shortly after adding more fluid , the fluid and brakes were gone and white smoke came out of the tail pipe. We never could see exactly where it was leaking at. We added about a quart and a half of fluid . After adding the more fluid, we managed to get it up to the dealership where it was purchased . We explain to what was going on and he knew of the situation because he said it was a recall last year on the master cylinder if I’m saying it, right. I told him that we never received a recall letter but we left the vehicle and he did research by our Vin number, and said we were not part of the recall, but I read a recall number 22S14 about the break failure in expeditions. We called the local number attached to the recall and they once again told us that our vehicle was not part of the recall because I guess it was not out of the Kentucky plant . We are having the same issue with our brakes, but it’s not covered in the current recall. My vehicle is currently in the shop and waiting to be repaired. Can someone research and see if our vehicle can be part of the recall now and be repaired under the/a recall. thank you.

In December we took our vehicle in for a scheduled recall repair. Upon installation, we were told by the dealer that all parts were not available. So they released our vehicle back to us. No follow up between and on March 17, the braking system failed. An accident was narrowly avoided.

At the present I have a vehicle that can not be driven. The low brake fluid alarm and light came. So I stopped purchase some brake fluid and fill the master cylinder up. Not 5 minutes later the alarm goes off and low brake fluid light is on. Now I have no or little brakes. Brake Pedal goes straight to the floor. Too dangerous to drive. My vehicle is now in my drive way after another bottle of brake fluid and slowly driving home. Don't know where the fluid is going Don't see any on the ground. I was told my vehicle vin # was not included in the recall.

On 8/15/22 I was driving when all of a sudden my brake pedal went all the way to the floor, the braking system dash light chimed and lit up a warning, and the dash read low brake fluid. I pulled over with almost zero brakes, was able to add a bottle of brake fluid. I was able to limp the car home and when I got there again no brake fluid and all warning lights on again. We added another bottle of brake fluid and let the car sit. After an hour we went back and started the car and got the same warnings. We popped the hood and again zero brake fluid, even though we have added 2 bottles. There was nothing visibly leaking. We were able to get the car a mechanic that verified there is a leak in the master cylinder and it needs to be replaced along with the brake booster. The vehicle is available for inspection. There is a recall on this model truck for the same problem but I was told my vehicle was built 10 days past the date allowed in the recall. Having this happen with no warning was extremely dangerous given that I had almost no braking power. It was a challenge moving the car off the road and back home. I had no indication anything was wrong prior to 8/15/22 until the pedal went to the floor that day. Vehicle has only been inspected by my mechanic.

Jul 2022

While driving with two of our younger children, our 18 year old daughter noticed the brake warning light came on and the brakes failed to the point that the pedal had to be depressed completely to the floor to get any braking power, which was considerably diminished. After taking the car in to the mechanic, we learned we needed a new master cylinder and brake booster because the original set was defective. We also then learned of the current related recall for 2016-2017 Ford Expeditions (NHTSA Recall No. 22V-150) yet our VIN is somehow inexplicably excluded. We had the repair done (see attached invoice) as otherwise the vehicle was unsafe for driving. We are just grateful that no one was hurt as it was a terrifying experience. The recall needs to be expanded immediately before someone is seriously injured, or worse.

Brake master cylinder began leaking and filled the brake booster with fluid. Vehicle lost all ability to brake while driving down road. Took to dealership as I believe it should be included in existing recall for same issue. They repaired the issue with a new master cylinder and brake booster. but I paid for it as I was told it isn’t included in recall.

RECENTLY MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR GRANDCHILDREN TO SCHOOL. SHE PUT HERE FOOT ON THE BRAKE PETAL AND IT WENT TO THE FLOOR. SHE GOT AN ALARM ON HER DASH ABOUT LOW BRAKE FLUID AND LOSS OF BRAKES. SHE WAS ABLE TO GET HE CAR STOPPED. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO OUR FORD DEALER. THEY REPLACED THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER AND THE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY. WE NOW SEE THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR 2017 FORD EXPEDITION FOR EXACTLY THIS PROBLEM. The recall is NHTSA recall number 20V-332. THE FORD DEALER IS TELLING US THIS RECALL IS NOT FOR OUR CAR WHEN WE EXPERIENCED THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS OUTLINED IN THIS RECALL.

exactly as specified in the recall. I first heard a tone, followed by brake failure warning light, then another brake failure light. Luckily I was parking almost immediately and braking was spongy. After turning off the vehicle and trying to restart, upon pressing the brake petal it went completely to the floor rendering me completely stranded. Vehicle did start. Wrecker was called. There was no visible brake fluid leakage on the car or the pavement.

Left home for work and low brake fluid light came on. Went to nearby part store purchased brake fluid. Filled reservoir. Drove about 2 miles light came back on. Pulled over to check and reservoir was completely empty. No visible sign of leak. Had to coast to a slow roll and pull emergency brake to stop.

Breaks failed due to Master Cylinder failure. Had repaired locally as car barely made repairs shop blocks away after adding break fluid. Was told since I did not use authorized Ford facility I could not be reimbursed for repairs. I see a recall was issued for my Model Year but no recall for my vehicle. It had same problem. If a forced refund is possible I’d be interested. This was in 2019 but still have $823 invoice.

Vehicle has 124,058 miles. On this date - Oct 14, 2021, brake pedal got soft, audio and visual warning saying low brake fluid level. Luckily was just slowly pulling into driveway after driving at 55-60 on US 341. Checked brake fluid level. It was indeed very low. Added DOT4 fluid. Drove vehicle slowly in back area and depressed brake pedal several times. Pedal still not quite right. Thought maybe had air in lines. But soon audio/visual warning came on. Checked brake fluid level. Low again. Looked underneath for any obvious leaks - none. Check fire wall - nothing. So assumed fluid was going in to booster. Looked on internet and found other complaints just like this. This is EXTREMELY dangerous. Has anyone been killed yet? The brake parts need to be built like aircraft parts.
