CONSUMER STATES THE METAL GAS STRAPS THAT ATTACH THE GAS TANK TO THE TRUCK WERE RUSTED AND THE GAS TANK WAS LEAKING AS A RESULT *TGW THE DEALER STATED THE LEAK WAS A DIRECT RESULT FROM THE RUSTED METAL STRAPS. FORD STATED THEY WOULD NOT PAY FOR A NEW TANK, UNLESS THE TANK FELL OUT OF THE TRUCK AND CAUGHT FIRE. *JB

THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR A RECALL REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER:11V385000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: STORAGE: TANK ASSEMBLY: MOUNTING). AFTER THE REMEDY REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED, THE FUEL TANK BEGAN LEAKING A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FUEL. THE DEALER REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IN CORRECTING THE DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 109,000.

THE MECHANIC ALSO ADVISED THAT THE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED SINCE THE STRAPS WERE SEVERELY CORRODED AND COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE A FUEL LEAK. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE FUEL TANK WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 214,422.
REAR FUEL TANK STRAP BROKE, AND VERY CORRODED. FUEL TANK ONLY SIX INCHES FROM GROUND! USED A TIE DOWN STRAP RATED AT 300 POUNDS TO FASTEN FUEL TANK TO FRAME. *KB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH THE FUEL TANK DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT ONE OF THE STRAPS WHICH HELD THE FUEL TANK IN PLACE FRACTURED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THE FUEL TANK RUPTURED AND WAS LEAKING FUEL WHILE IT WAS PARKED AT THE REPAIR SHOP. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOTIFIED TO CLEAN UP THE SPILL. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 108,000. UPDATED 09/14/11 *BF THE FRONT STRAP BROKE IN THE MIDDLE AND FELL TO THE PAVEMENT. I HAVE A 2000 FORD F150 AND I HEARD THAT THERE IS BEING AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE GAS TANK STRAPS RUSTING THROUGH AND DROPPING THE TANK. THIS HAPPENED TO MY TRUCK CAUSING THE TANK TO DROP TO THE ROAD AND DRAG, ALSO CAUSING THE TANK TO SPRING A LEAK (NEEDING TO BE REPLACED). THE TANK, STRAPS, VENT TUBE, ETC. WERE REPLACED AT A COST OF NEAR $700.00. I WAS WONDERING WHAT STEPS IF ANY I CAN TAKE TO GET REIMBURSED FOR THIS COST. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REFUELING THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS HANGING ABNORMALLY BECAUSE THE STRAPS WERE CORRODED AND FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR REPAIRED FOR THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 151,788. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 149,000.
A STRAP WHICH HOLDS ON THE GAS TANK ON MY 2000 FORD F150 BROKE WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND DRAGGED APPX. 300 YARDS, CAUSING ABOUT 10 GALLONS TO LEAK OUT ON ROAD. THE LOCAL FIRE DEPT. HAD TO BE DISPATCHED, AND I HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TANK AND STRAP SYSTEM AT A COST OF OVER $800.00. THE LOCAL FORD DEALER THAT DID THE REPAIR DID NOT MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT A KNOWN PROBLEM. UPDATED 08/04/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE STRAP FURTHEST TO THE FRONT WAS THE ONLY STRAP THAT BROKE AND CAUSED THE FORWARD PART OF THE TANK TO DRAG. THE BREAK APPEARED TO BE IN THE CENTER OF THE STRAP ON THE BOTTOM FACING THE ROAD. THE ENTIRE METAL PART OF THE STRAP WAS EXTREMELY CORRODED. THE REAR WAS SIMILAR, BUT SEEMED TO HAVE ADDED SUPPORT FROM THE FILL NOZZLE AND CAP ASSEMBLY. ALSO TWO YEARS PRIOR, THE LOWERING SPARE TIRE CABLE WAS CORRODED AND BROKE WHILE DRIVING, WHICH CAUSED THE TIRE TO DROP TO THE GROUND. UPDATED 08/15/11 *TR
VEHICLE IS A 2000 FORD F 150. DAUGHTER FILLED THE TANK ON 4/8/2011. TANK FELL OFF THE VEHICLE WHILE TRAVELING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AT SPEED. BOTH SUPPORT STRAPS FAILED BY BREAKING IN HALF. TRUCK WAS SAFELY PULLED TO SIDE OF THE ROAD BUT ENTIRE CONTENTS OF FUEL TANK SPILLED ONTO THE HIGHWAY BERM. TRUCK WAS TOWED TO SERVICE STATION FOR REPAIR. *TR

AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS IN REGARDS TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I WAS DRIVING MY FORD F150 WHEN SUDDENLY I HEARD A SOUND THAT SOUNDED LIKE SOMETHING WAS CAUGHT UNDER THE TRUCK. SLOWLY PULLED OVER AND FOUND THE GAS TANK WAS ON THE GROUND, HELD UP ON ONE END BY A HOSE. GOOD THING I WAS NOT GOING FAST OR ON A BUMPY ROAD. IF THE TANK HAD HIT A BUMP IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CRUSHES AND POSSIBLY EXPLODED. HAD ABOUT A HALF TANK OF GAS. REPAIRS ARE ESTIMATED AT $270 SO FAR. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2000 FORD F-150. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD SOMETHING FALL FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER PULLED OVER AND STOPPED. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE AND DISCOVERED THE FUEL TANK WAS DETACHED FROM THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE AND LAYING ON THE PAVEMENT UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE STILL ATTACHED TO THE GAS HOSE. THE CONSUMER MANAGED TO RE-ATTACH THE TANK TO THE VEHICLE USING A COAT HANGER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT THE STRAPS WHICH HELD THE FUEL TANK WERE SEVERELY CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 155,140 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. UPDATED 04/25/11 *BF AN INSPECTION REVEALED THE STRAPS HOLDING THE TANK WHICH WAS MADE OUT OF VERY THIN MATERIAL HAD CORRODED AND BROKEN A PART ALLOWING THE FUEL TANK TO FALL OFF. THE CONSUMER HAS SINCE TRADED THE VEHICLE. UPDATED 09/12/11
ON FRIDAY, JULY 29, 2011 I NOTICED SOMETHING HANGING DOWN BELOW MY 2000 MODEL YEAR FORD F150 PICKUP TRUCK. UPON CLOSER INVESTIGATION I DISCOVERED THAT THE DANGLING OBJECT WAS THE REMAINS OF THE FRONT FUEL TANK MOUNTING STRAP WHICH HAD FAILED DUE TO CORROSION. THE FRONT OF THE FUEL TANK WAS DROOPING DOWN FOUR TO SIX INCHES FROM ITS NORMAL POSITION AND THE TANK WAS BEING HELD ONLY BY THE REAR STRAP. EXAMINATION OF THE REAR STRAP REVEALED THAT IT WAS ALSO SEVERELY RUSTED. THE FOLLOWING MORNING I PURCHASED NEW FRONT AND REAR FUEL TANK MOUNTING STRAPS FROM MY LOCAL FORD DEALER'S PARTS DEPARTMENT AND INSTALLED THEM MYSELF. AS A RETIRED ENGINEER, I WAS DISAPPOINTED BY HOW FLIMSY THESE STRAPS ARE AND HOW THEIR CORROSION RESISTANCE IS OBVIOUSLY INADEQUATE TO PREVENT FAILURE. THAT EVENING, SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2011, THERE WAS A REPORT ON A LOCAL TELEVISION STATION OF A HAZMAT TEAM RESPONSE TO AN INCIDENT NEAR GOOD HOPE ROAD AND US HIGHWAY 45 IN MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN IN WHICH THE FUEL TANK OF A FORD F150 PICKUP HAD FALLEN TO THE GROUND DUE TO FAILURE OF THE FUEL TANK STRAPS. THAT LED ME TO THE DISCOVERY THAT NHTSA HAS BEEN INVESTIGATING CORROSION FAILURES OF FUEL TANK MOUNTING STRAPS ON F150S. I BELIEVE THE EVIDENCE SHOWS THAT A VEHICLE SAFETY DEFECT IS PRESENT IN THE DESIGN OF THESE STRAPS, IN THAT THE DESIGN IS INSUFFICIENT TO PREVENT OR WITHSTAND CORROSION WHICH COULD REASONABLY BE EXPECTED TO OCCUR DURING THE NORMALLY EXPECTED LIFETIME OF THE VEHICLE. I STRONGLY URGE THAT A MANDATORY RECALL BE ISSUED AGAINST FORD F150 VEHICLES AND ANY OTHERS USING THESE OR SIMILARLY INADEQUATE FUEL TANK MOUNTING STRAPS. *TR

I FILLED MY GAS TANK UP AND THE NEXT DAY MY GAS TANK FELL ON MY FORD F150. I LOOKED IN MY DRIVEWAY AND ON THE STREET AND FOUND ONE OF THE BRACKETS RUSTED ON THE STREET. LUCKILY I WAS IN A PARKING LOT AND HEARD THE TANK DROP OR THERE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS INJURIES. *TR

2000 FORD F150: DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN WE HEARD A LOUD NOISE FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE WHEN HITTING A BUMP GOING OVER A BRIDGE. WE PULLED OFF AT THE NEXT GAS STATION EXIT AND FOUND THE FUEL TANK HANGING ON BY JUST THE FUEL FILLER NECK. BOTH STRAPS HAD BROKEN COMPLETELY THROUGH. I WENT TO A PARTS STORE AND PURCHASED SOME CARGO RATCHET STRAPS TO CREATE A TEMPORARY REPAIR TO GET TO OUR DESTINATION. I CONTACTED A FORD DEALER IN THE TOWN WE TRAVELED TO ABOUT A REPAIR OR RECALL AND THEY STATED THAT THERE WASN'T A RECALL. THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE PART AVAILABLE AT THE TIME. HELLO I OWN A 2000 FORD F150 AND NOTICED A CORRODED STRAP HANGING FROM MY GAS TANK. TODAY (6-14) I SMELLED GAS AND AM TAKING IT IN TO THE SHOP.
