On 1/29/22 in Dayton OH, I was stopped and turning left out onto the road. I accelerated lightly and the left axel broke in the middle of the turn. The car was stopped in the middle of two lanes. I was able to get help and push the car back in the business driveway by keeping it in neutral. The car would make repetitive clicking sounds if I left it in park. I had it towed. Repair shop fixed issue. It was the left front axel shaft that broke. My car has about 130,000 miles on it and is a 2010 Honda Fit. It is available for inspection. I am so thankful that I wasn't on a high speed road as a car could have collided into me when I was turning left because the axle broke before I could get fully into one lane. If I had been moving at higher speeds, I definitely would have gotten in an accident. There were no warning indicators before the incident. I regularly serviced the vehicle.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HONDA FIT. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V770000 (POWER TRAIN) HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE RECALL REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT CALLED FRIENDLY HONDA (1143 DUTCHESS TURNPIKE, POUGHKEEPSIE, NY 12603) WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE PART WAS NOT YET AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.
Driveshaft snapped. Replaced by dealer at considerable expense. Honda opened a case number #11878648, but refuses to pay or return calls.
I HAD COME TO A STOP SIGN ON A CITY STREET IN XENIA, OHIO AND WHEN I APPLIED THE GAS TO PULL OUT I HEARD A CLUNK AND THE CAR DIDN'T MOVE FORWARD BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN NORMALLY. I SURMISED SOMETHING WENT WRONG WITH THE POWER TRAIN. I CALLED AAA AND THEY THOUGHT THE SAME, THE TOW DRIVER HAVING BEEN A MECHANIC FOR MANY YEARS SAID BROKEN DRIVE SHAFTS ON HONDAS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. IT WAS TOWED TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP IN BEAVERCREEK, OH AND IT WAS FOUND THE LEFT SIDE DRIVE SHAFT HAD BROKEN AND NEEDED REPLACED. ARE BROKEN DRIVE SHAFTS COMMON ON HONDAS? I HAVE ATTACHED THE REPAIR BILL.
RIGHT REAR AXLE BROKEN. LESS THAN TWO YEARS AGO THE LEFT REAR ANKLE BROKE. THIS TIME VEHICLE WAS PARKED. PREVIOUS TIME CAR STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION, THEN WOULDN'T MOVE.
FRONT AXLE SNAPPED
MY FRONT PASSENGER SIDE CV AXEL FAILED A YEAR AGO. MIRACULOUSLY IT HAPPENED IN THE PARKING LOT OF A SERVICE STATION WHO THEN DID THE REPAIR SO I DIDN’T NEED A TOW. IT JUST HAPPENED AGAIN. WHEN I GOT TOWED I WAS TOLD THAT THEY ARE TOWING HONDA FITS REGULARLY SO IT IS LIKELY DUE TO A DESIGN PROBLEM. LUCKILY I HAD JUST MADE A LEFT TURN INTO A BUSINESS PARKING LOT FROM A BUSY BUSINESS STREET (VT STATE HIGHWAY 302) WHEN THE CAR STOPPED MOVING AND I COULD NOT GET IT INTO GEAR. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY DANGEROUS IF IT FAILED AT HIGHER SPEED AND/OR IN THE MIDDLE OF A ON BUSY ROAD.
THE AXLE ON MY CAR HAS BROKE THREE DIFFERENT TIMES IN THE PAST 8 MONTHS, NOT THE RESULT FROM AN ACCIDENT. I TURNED OUT OF A GAS STATION AT AND HEARD A POP AND THEN A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE. CAR WOULD NOT GO FORWARDS OR BACKWARDS.
FROM A ROLLING STOP, TOOK A RIGHT HAND TURN FROM A PAVED PARKING LOT ONTO A SLIGHT INCLINED WELL PAVED COUNTRY ROAD. DURING MODERATE ACCELERATION IN DRIVE MODE (NOT USING THE EQUIPPED CVT PADDLE SHIFTERS) APPROXIMATELY 1 CAR LENGTH FROM STARTING POINT A LOUD SOUND OCCURED, CAR LOST FORWARD MOMENTUM 2 APPROXIMATELY IN 2 CAR LENGTHS AND PROCEEDED TO ROLL BACKWARDS BACK INTO THE PARKING LOT INTO A PARKING SPACE WHILE STILL IN DRIVE. CAR NOW CAN ROLL IN ANY GEAR INCLUDING PARK. NO DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON PRIOR OR AFTER THIS EVENT. THERE WAS NO WARNING THIS WOULD OCCURE. THIS EVENT WAS OVER AS QUICKLY AS IT OCCURED. NO CARS WERE APPROACHING IN EITHER DIRECTION DURING THE EVENT. NO UNUSUAL SOUNDS AFTER. ENGEN TURNS OVER WITHOUT ISSUES. CAR IS VERY WELL MAINTAINED WITH LOTS OF NEW PARTS AND SERVICE. MOSTLY HIGHWAY AND PAVED OPEN COUNTRY ROAD DRIVING. AFTER STARTING ENGEN, PUTTING IN DRIVE OR REVERSE CAR DOES NOT MOVE, NO UNUSUAL SOUNDS WHILE PUSHING ON ACCELERATOR PEDAL IN ANY GEAR. CAR TOWED TO HOME ON A LORRY WHERE IT NOW SITS AS OF 02/2019. MILAGE APPROX 194000 MILES.
ON FEBRUARY 1, 2019, OUR 2010 HONDA FIT'S LEFT FRONT AXLE BROKE SUDDENLY UNDER NORMAL ACCELERATION IN A STRAIGHT LINE FROM A STOP, ON LEVEL GROUND. UPON INSPECTION, FOUND THAT THE AXLE HAD CORRODED TO THE POINT THAT WELL UNDER HALF OF THE ORIGINAL CROSS SECTION WAS STILL INTACT. THIS CORROSION OCCURRED UNDER THE VIBRATION DAMPENING COLLAR. SUSPECTED CAUSE OF CORROSION IS ROAD SALT BRINE ENTERING BETWEEN THE COLLAR AND AXLE. VEHICLE MILEAGE AT TIME OF FAILURE WAS 76,183.
AFTER A STOP AT TRAFFIC LIGHT, WHEN TRYING TO GO FROM IT ON A GREEN SIGNAL, SUDDENLY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILED AND VEHICLE NOT ENGAGING ANY GEAR. HAD TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND PUSHED CAR TO SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR SAFETY CONCERN. TRANMISSION PLACE MENTIONED IT AS TRANSMISSION FAILURE CAUSING AXLES TO BROKE AND PARTS IN TRANSMISSION DAMAGED/SPRINKLED OR IN PIECES.
