It was the gear shift, changing from drivre mode to neutral, or from drive mode to completely shut off while I was driving on the the freeway and had to slow down because the vehicles in front of me were slowing down too, because of traffic conditions, the car problem has been confirmed by the manufacturer, there's even a law suit in process here in California for this matter. The car is right now in the dealership for repair, there was no light on in the dashboard warning. This started like to weeks ago, first time just went from driving mode to neutral. Second time shut off and turn on again, third time yesterday, from driving mode changed to neutral and finally completely shut down. I feel unsafe for my wife driving this car and for the kids .

The transmission is unreliable. You push the gas and it hesitates to accelerate or switch to the next gear to speed up. It can shake or rattle the car. Has a trouble at low speeds or shifting to the next gear to increase speed. This makes it dangerous to try to pull out into an intersection because the transmission or gear shifting doesn't always hit and you can get hit or injured. I always have to leave additional space while pulling into an intersection or merging into traffic in case the transmission slips. I have brought this to the attention of my local Honda service station and was told "that is just how this transmission works".

Engine developed a tapping noise. Took it to the dealer and they diagnosed bad bearings that would have seized the engine very soon. Looks like a manufacturing defect of the crankshaft.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while stopped, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle hesitated while accelerating. On another occasion, the contact stated that while his wife was driving, the message "Stop Driving when Safe - Transmission Failure - See Owner’s Manual" was displayed. The contact stated that his wife pulled over to the shoulder of the road and parked the vehicle, and the vehicle became difficult to shift out of park. In addition, the contact stated that the RPM occasionally fluctuated and there was a delay with the vehicle responding. The contact also stated that the transmission was shifting hard. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with an internal cylinder failure and that the 9-speed manual transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken back to the same local dealer several times; however, no failures were diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure by the local dealer to assist with the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.

I scheduled a transmission flush service. After driving i noticed a jerking motion at about 25mph. Took back to honda and they charged me again to do another flush. Issue still persists.Service advisor said may be the transmission. Researching on line seems many have had problems with this transmission model. I knew another flush was not going to fix the issue but dealership was able to make an additional $283.

The transmission in my 2018 Honda Odyssey clunks and shutters and jerks forward when accelerating and jerks slow down when decelerating. Stop and go traffic I either can barely accelerate or rapidly accelerate after upshidting and almost hit the car in front of me. The transmission shudders and clunks and jerks

When accelerating from a stopped position, the car occasionally hesitates and then suddenly surges, especially when turning into traffic with vehicles fast approaching. After hesitating, the car accelerates rapidly with the tires screeching. Similarly, when travelling at slow speed, perhaps 40 MPH, and accelerating into a neighboring lane, the car quits accelerating for a brief moment before rapidly accelerating again. I can hear the transmission clunk occasionally as it selects another gear. It's as if the electronic communication between the engine and the transmission is lagging. The Honda dealer indicated the transmission and engine are fine. The brief second or two acceleration delay before overreacting has been embarrassing and I fear dangerous. The car has always behaved this way but it has gotten worse the last couple years. Currently have 54k miles.

The transmission has intermittent harsh or jerky upshifts with steady acceleration, or the MIL comes on with DTC P0756. The vehicle would be unable to shift into reverse thus causing potential traffic issues by stalling on the road. The shift would not engage in reverse, appears to be stuck in neutral and slowly slides.

No acceleration when pressing gas at very unsafe times like pulling out from a drive onto road or turning in intersection. I pressed the gas when it was clear to go and the car lagged in acceleration then jolted me out into the middle of the intersection where it lagged again and right before I was about to get T- Boned by another car it accelerated and I was able to make it into my lane last minute. This has happened multiple times but at least 3 times where it put me and my children in imminent danger of getting hit. I have taken it to dealership where they did a reset on some electric part of transmission and said it could take up to 1000 miles to notice a change. So far no change and still experiencing problems. My car also lunges or intensely rocks back and forth when put in park. I hear clunking when shifting at various times. The issues with acceleration make it extremely dangerous when needing to pass vehicles whether on highway or roadway. I do not trust this vehicle but because the dealer sold it over priced mixed with the $13,500 depreciation that has happened within just a year of buying it I am not in a position to get out of it. I am desperately seeking help to get out of this death trap of a car for mine and my children’s sake. I bought this vehicle with appx. 40,000 miles and have had regular maintenance. Currently setting at 82,000 miles. The car has had the same issues since buying it with 40,000 miles that it has today with 82,000 miles. I see where there is a specific recall for 2018-2019 Honda odysseys for this type of problem but my vin is not affected which needs to change as clearly my vin is very much affected.

There are no warning lights illuminating. The 2018 Odyssey inconsistently will not accelerate when needed and it puts the driver and passengers in dangerous situations if there is other traffic. When the driver pushes down on the foot pedal for acceleration, the car acts as if it can't engage for a moment (like it is thinking about what it needs to do), it briefly freezes, but then will suddenly jerk into gear and jump. It is dangerous because it can happen when trying to accelerate onto the freeway or when trying to turn onto a busy road and there is no rhyme or reason as to when it is going to happen. There have been 2 close calls in which the other drivers acted defensively preventing crashes and on 1 instance, there were children in the car. We should not have to wait for an injury to have a problem considered and corrected.

Numerous times, this 2018 Honda Odyssey would shift into neutral when trying to downshift at highway speeds after a long trip. The push button gear indicator would state the vehicle would be in "D" drive, but the vehicle would actually be in neutral. The only remedy would be to apply the brakes to allow something to reset, and the transmission would then engage as normal. This is very unsafe as one time this happened to me while I was ascending a steep bridge with my entire family in the vehicle. This happened multiple times in the 2 1/2 years with this van, and each time the Honda dealer replied that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. Another issue with the transmission was during really hot weather. The vehicle was parked in a parking lot on a 100+ degree day. Upon entering the vehicle, the dash flashed the warning signs "Transmission error, pull over immediately when safe". "Transmission error, please apply the parking brake". The vehicle was taken directly to the Honda dealership with errors listed, and the Honda dealer indicated that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. The codes were reset and the vehicle was given back to me. A month later, the transmission went into neutral again during a trip at highway speeds. Being that I could no longer trust the vehicle with my family's safety, I was forced to get a new vehicle as Honda did not want to acknowledge the issue.

when starting from a stop, occasionally when the accelerator is first pressed, the van doesn't immediately accelerate, there is about a two second hesitation where the car does nothing, and then finally it engages and starts to move forward. This happens occasionally in DRIVE, but I don't think I have ever seen it in reverse. It seems to happen more right after the vehicle is first turned on. I have seen many others complaining in various forums about the same issue. Here's one site: https://www.odyclub.com/threads/2018-odyssey-having-1-3-second-acceleration-lag-from-stopped-or-rolling-on-9-speed-transmission.368250/ This has been happening for a long time, I don't recall when it first started to happen. the date I put below is pretty much a random date

Mar 2023

On March 13, 2023 my Honda Odyssey 2018 would not shift out of "Park". The message,” Stop Driving When Safe. Transmission Problem. See Manual” appeared on my dashboard. I turned off the Odyssey and started it back up. After this I was able to shift into drive. This message never appeared before March 13, 2023. Later as I was driving, the Odyssey shifted into "Neutral" by itself without any action on my part. The vehicle became unresponsive, the Odyssey lost all drive train power as we were driving on a steep decline. I was only able to slow the Odyssey with the foot break. This was an extremely dangerous situation that put the safety of my whole family at risk. I was able to steer the vehicle to the shoulder of the highway out of on coming traffic. The next day, March 14, when I started the Odyssey it would not shift out of "Park" and the same error message about the transmission appeared. We were left stranded on the side of the road with freezing temperatures. The mechanic at the Honda dealership stated he could not get the Odyssey to shift out of Park until it had been running for 45 minutes. The problem was confirmed by the Honda dealership. The Odyssey was inspected by the Honda dealership. He could not determine the exact cause and suggested a new battery. I purchased a new battery, and the Honda technician installed it. I had the old battery tested at AutoZone, the battery passed the test, it was a good battery The Honda Dealership changed the Transmission fluid and updated the software of theOdyssey. After being serviced and repaired by the Honda Dealership, the same transmission problem happened again on March 21 as I was driving my boys to school in the morning, going down a decline, again the Odyssey shifted into "Neutral" by itself without any action on my part. The power train lost all power, I could not shift it into "drive". Again this loss of control put my family's safety at risk. This was the third time my family was left stranded.

Jan 2023

I was on a road trip with my family and stopped at a gas station. When we were ready to leave I attempted to place the vehicle in drive but it was stuck in park (vehicle has a push button shifter) and multiple warnings started to show up including transmission disabled, blind spot monitoring disabled and one other warning that I can't recall. There were no prior warning signs and we did all of the recommended services. There were prior issues with the transmission not seeming to engage. You would press on the gas and nothing would happen (It almost seemed as if you were just cruising) and then, after a lengthy delay the transmission would suddenly engage. There was also some issues with the transmission slipping. We brought this up several times with different dealers and were always told that they couldn't replicate the issue and that there were no recalls on our vehicle.

The PowerTrain in my car has been giving me nothing but headaches since I purchased it in January 2022. Multiple times at intersections, the car stalls and starts going backwards, causing me to put the car in park and restart it to go forward. The problem is so severe that it happens almost every time I come to a stop. It's not just inconvenient, it's downright dangerous. I can't even begin to describe the feeling of helplessness when my car starts reversing in the middle of a busy intersection with oncoming traffic heading my way. I have taken my car to the dealer multiple times and they have attempted to fix the issue by replacing the transmission and a camera, but these repairs have not resolved the problem. I even had to have my car towed back to my hometown after it stalled in Dallas. The dealer assures me that the problem has been fixed, but it continues to happen, and it's getting worse. Yesterday, on January 18, 2023, the issue occurred again while driving in slow traffic, nearly causing a collision with the car behind us. My family and I were put in a very dangerous situation, all because of this faulty PowerTrain. I have been to the dealer over 5 times and they have yet to fix the issue. I am beyond frustrated and disappointed with this car and the dealer's inability to resolve the problem. I am a loyal customer, and I expect better from a brand that I trust. This car needs to be recalled, and I demand that the dealer and the manufacturer take responsibility for their faulty product and take immediate action to rectify the situation. I should not have to continue living in fear every time I get behind the wheel of my car, and I should not have to continue to waste my time and money taking it to the dealer for repairs that don't work.

My 2018 Honda EX-L RES has ZF 9 speed transmission and noticed following safety issues. 1. When I stop at the stop sign or red lights, then I push a gas pedal to take off right away the transmission is not engaged, rather booming sound and 3 second after it squeals the tire. It is very dangerous when I make right turn after I stop as cars in the main lanes may have hit me as my transmission does start right away. 2. When I drive local in 20-30 mph, the gear is 2,3 and 4 and the gear is shifting down hardly when I am off the gas pedal and it make my card terriblely slow down as I feel like I push the stop pedal and cars behind me honks as they think I doing a sudden stop.

Oct 2022

The transmission does not accelerate properly from a rolling stop. When at a stop and slightly depressing of the accelerator to get the vehicle moving prior to making a turn (for example), if you take slight pressure off the accelerator pedal the vehicle will not accelerate until the engine RPM's fall below 1,000RPM. This causes a slight delay in acceleration as the vehicle is rolling but unable to accelerate. This poses a collision risk from oncoming traffic. I reported this issue multiple times with my local Honda dealership and was told each time that there was no issue, this is normal for a Honda and "this is a known issue with no fix". Three times with three different excuses. This has been occurring from around 30K miles and continues today with 72K miles. There are no warnings or lights. The dealer has reprogrammed the transmission computer and I have paid for a transmission fluid change hoping for improvement but nothing has worked. I have sent a message to Honda Motors about 4-6 months ago and has not heard a response from corporate or the dealership.

The transmission has intermittent harsh or jerky upshifts with steady acceleration, or the MIL comes on with DTC P0716. Abnormal TCM adaptation values or a miscalculation in the TCM software causes the MIL to come on with DTC P0716. The harsh upshifts cause a momentary driver distraction which may cause an accident.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while attempting to accelerate, there was a delay in response from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure however, the TCM module software was updated and the vehicle operated normally. The contact stated the dealer informed him that the failure could reoccur. The manufacturer was contacted and suggested that the vehicle be diagnosed by the dealer. The failure mileage was 17,000.

Transmission delays in shifting from neutral to first on acceleration, when it engages it finally squeals the tires. Also at around 25 miles an hour it club is into the next gear and the whole car shudders. It is a safety issue and makes crossing roads scary. It has been looked at multiple (4?) times by different Honda dealers and they always reply it is functioning normally. There are no warning lamps or errors showing on the instruments but it is not normal.

I have had 4 incidents where I was in heavy traffic and acceleration onto a busy freeway from a ramp and when I merged into heavy traffic, my car quit! Suddenly I had no power and was slowing down rapidly. The driver behind me got no warning brake lights and I had no place to go. Needless to say I was greeted with a loud long horn blast and luckily not the expected crash sound I was expecting. It took 3 to 5 seconds for my transmission to get back in gear and generate power. At 70 miles an hour you travel quite a distance in 3 to 5 seconds. The scariest incident was on a crowded four lane divided highway. I pulled out to pass a slow moving semi truck and as soon as I got into the faster crowded lane, the car lost power again. This time I had a semi truck barreling down on me and and one to my right side. Fortunately, the truck was able to slow down and not hit me, but again the long horn blast was accompanied by a rude gesture. If any of these incidents had resulted in an accident I probably would not have survived to even explain the cars malfunction. This is totally unpredictable and not reproducible. We took the car into a Honda dealership and reported the problem and were told they drove it and couldn't reproduce the problem and it was fine. I strongly suspect there have been multiple incidents where people were not as fortunate as I was and the failure resulted in serious rear end collisions. It would be interesting to see if Honda vehicles with this year CVT have seen an increase in rear end collisions. I hope I am not a victim of a fatal collision due to this defect, but I can't help but feel nervous any time I am merging into traffic or passing in heavy traffic. This problem has been reported before by others as a quick internet search confirms. It would be a very expensive recall for Honda, but what price do you put on safety and a human life. Friends have suggested I get a different vehicle. I can't afford this in today's economy.

I'M AN OWNER OF 2018 ODYSSEY EX WITH 9-SPEED TRANS. THIS IS MY THIRD ODYSSEY I OWN. I HAVE TWO 2016 AND ONE 2018. I'M VERY DISAPPOINT ABOUT THIS 2018 TRANS AND THE LACK OF ATTENTION FROM HONDA REGARDING THIS KNOWN ISSUE. FROM THE PART SALEPERSON TO THE ADVISOR, ALL NOTED THE ISSUE WITH THESE 9-SPEED TRANSMISSION. RATTLE, HESITATION, SHUDDERING, JERKING, WERE SOME OF THE ONGOING ISSUES. I COMPLETED INTENSE RESEARCH AND FOUND TONS OF PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I WAS REAR ENDED DUE TO THIS HESITATION AND MISS GEAR ISSUE WHILE DRIVING. THE IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRES BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUS HURT.

Nov 2021

The transmission started shifting hard on November 20th, 2021 while driving 60-70 mph on the interstate. I was on a Thanksgiving trip (Indianapolis, IN to Venice, FL) with my wife and three kids ages 8, 6, and 4. We were on I-75 north of Atlanta when the transmission shifted hard up and down around 2000 rpm. After about four hard shifts the van lost the ability to accelerate (no amount of throttle increased vehicle speed); no dash indicators or warnings. At the time we were going around 60-70 mph when we lost acceleration and I had to coast the van to the side of the road through the northern Atlanta traffic. The transmission did come back and I was able to get of the next exit and take the van to the Honda dealer. The transmission continued to hard shift on the approximately 15 minute drive to the dealer. I did leave the van with the dealer, but before I left I tried to put the van in reverse and it would not move. The dash and button suggested I was in reverse but there was no function, and at that time I got a transmission problem warning. Prior to trying to reverse the vehicle I did not get a warning. So while on the interstate when it was a real problem the vehicle did not give any indication of what was wrong; so I’m glad I was driving and not my wife or someone less capable in a dangerous driving situation. Honda looked at the van on Monday November 22nd and told me I needed a new transmission at a cost of $9,300. The van was purchased in March of 2018 and currently has around 69k miles on it. I don’t believe anyone would agree that a transmission replacement at 69k miles is acceptable. This transmission failure is on top of the RES problems that have persisted for multiple years now. If Honda doesn’t contribute financially to the transmission repair, I have no reason to buy another Honda. My van has been nothing but problems. The RES is unreliable for the family and the transmission failure left us stranded 500 miles from home.

The contact's parents own a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the gear shifter was shifted to drive however, the vehicle failed to move. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the transmission software needed to be reset. The contact stated that the transmission software was reset however, the vehicle stalled inadvertently while driving. The warning message "Do Not Drive, Transmission Trouble" and several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed back to the dealer who reset the transmission software however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed back to the dealer for the third time and the transmission software was reset; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to a second dealer who informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. The contact stated that the failure recurred, and the vehicle was towed back to the second dealer who diagnosed that the transmission had failed. The contact stated that the transmission was replaced however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 52,000.
