3 TIMES IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS MY WIFE HAS BEEN STRANDED IN SUB FREEZING TEMPERATURE DUE TO THE ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL) NOT UNLOCKING. EACH TIME THE CAR HAS BEEN STOPPED AND DOES NOT RESTART. HAVING READ MULTIPLE REPORTS NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE PART AND EVEN REMOVED IT FROM 2010 MODELS HOWEVER I AM OUT OF LUCK SINCE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. THIS DEFECTIVE PART SHOULD BE PART OF A NATIONAL RECALL AND CONSUMERS SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR FIXES AND TOWING COST. CURRENTLY NISSAN WILL NOT FIX THE ISSUE UNTIL IT IS OCCURRING WHICH MEANS YOU HAVE TO WAIT TO BE STRANDED SOME WHERE AND HAVE IT TOWED TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO BE FIXED WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE. I AM LUCKY THAT ME AND MY WIFE ARE HANDY AND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RESTART THE CARD BY LITERALLY HAMMERING ON THE ESCL UNTIL IT UNLOCKED. IF WE HAD KIDS OR WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EMERGENCY THIS WOULD BE GATHERING NATIONAL NEWS ATTENTION ON HOW NISSAN KNEW ABOUT A DEFECTIVE PIECE AND (EVEN REPLACING IT IN THE NEXT YEARS MODEL). MY CAR WAS STATIONARY IN A GROCERY PARKING LOT AND PUSH BUTTON STARTER WOULD NOT START. IT WAS THE DEAD OF WINTER WITH SUB ZERO TEMPERATURES. THE DASH DISPLAYED AN ILLUMINATED KEY INDICATING THERE MAY BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE INTELLIGENT KEY, SO I REPLACED THE BATTERY IN BOTH KEYS AND THE CAR STILL WOULD NOT START. I THEN TRIED TO JUMP THE CAR WITH NO SUCCESS. SO I GOOGLED "CAR WON'T START, 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA" AND THAT OPENED THE FLOOD GATES. I READ TONS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME PART MALFUNCTIONING ON THE 2009 TO 2011 NISSAN. WHEN I FINALLY TOWED MY CAR TO THE DEALER, GUESS WHAT--I HAD THAT VERY ISSUE, SOMETHING CALLED THE "STEERING LOCK MALFUNCTION". DURING MY RESEARCH, I EVEN READ AN ARTICLE THAT INDICATED NISSAN WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, AND HAD EXTENDED THEIR WARRANTY TO HELP, BUT THAT EXTENSION ENDED IN MARCH 2015 AND NISSAN WOULD NOT COMPLETE A RECALL BECAUSE IT WAS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. I SAY IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. AGAIN, MY CAR STOPPED ON ME IN THE DEAD OF WINTER IN THE MIDDLE OF A COLD SNAP. WHAT I ALSO READ WAS THAT NISSAN KNEW THAT AT LEAST 50% OF THESE CARS MANUFACTURED WOULD HAVE TO HAVE THIS PART REPLACED AND DECIDED TO LEAVE THE CONSUMER ON THEIR OWN TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. I VIEWED YOUTUBE VIDEOS WHERE TONS OF CONSUMERS WERE DOING DESPERATE THINGS TO AVOID SPENDING THE $1000 FOR THIS REPAIR. THEY WERE PULLING THEIR FUSES FOR THE STEERING LOCK SYSTEM. THEY WERE PULLING OUT THE PART AND BANGING ON IT. THEY WERE STICKING A SCREW DRIVER IN THE PART TO RELEASE THE STUCK MECHANISM TO GET THE CAR TO START. IT'S A SHAME THAT NISSAN IS AWARE THAT THIS PART IS DEFECTIVE AND HAS THE TENDENCY TO GET STUCK, RESULTING IN DISABLING THE PUSH BUTTON STARTER AND THEY WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER BUY ANOTHER NISSAN CAR, ESPECIALLY NOT A 2009 THROUGH 2011. I WOULDN'T OWN ANOTHER NISSAN IF THEY WERE GIVING THEM AWAY. THIS COMPANY IS UNETHICAL.

ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL) FAILED AND WAS STICKS AND STRANDED. I AM A FULL TIME STUDENT AS WELL AS WORKING FULL TIME. HAD TO GET MY 09 ALTIMA TOWED TO THE DEALSHIP AND LOST OUT ON WORK AND MADE MY DAILY LIFE A FINANCIAL HARDSHIP. IT IS GOING TO COST ME $1100 JUST FOR THE PART AND LABOR. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH 2009 ALTIMA'S AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED UNTIL NISSAN FIXES THE ISSUE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION TO BE IN, IF I WAS CAMPING AND HAD NO CELL PHONE SERVICE MY LIFE COULD SERIOUSLY BE IN DANGER. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS PART.

MY CAR WOULD NOT START AND I WAS FORCED TO SIT IN MY CAR FOR HOURS AS THE STORES HAD CLOSED AND IT TOOK OVER A HOUR TO HAVE MY CAR TOWED. THIS LEFT ME IN A SITUATION IN WHICH I COULD HAVE BEEN HARMED AS A YOUNG WOMAN IN VULNERABLE SITUATION. NISSAN STATES THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER IRREGULARITY WHICH MEANS THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING AND IS A MANUFACTURE ISSUE. AFTER GETTING IT DIAGNOSED BY A CERTIFIED NISSAN DEALER, I WAS TOLD IT WAS MY ESCL. NISSAN SHOULD HONOR THEIR WORD AND FIX THE ISSUE AT NO COST SINCE IT'S A MANUFACTURE MALFUNCTIONING ISSUE IN WHICH THE CUSTOMER HAS NO CONTROL OVER.

I NOTICED A TINY KEY EMBLEM ON THE DASH THAT I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE, COME TO FIND OUT IT IS THE STEERING LOCK WHICH THERE WAS A RECALL ON. CALLED NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO FIX IT AND WAS TOLD THE RECALL EXPIRED IN JULY 2015 AND IT WOULD COST ME APPROXIMATELY $900 TO FIX. I CANNOT AFFORD 900 DOLLARS FOR SOMETHING THAT THEY SHOULD BE FIXING FOR FREE AS IT IS A NISSAN INDUCED ISSUE AND NOTHING PERSONAL. I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT A CAR FOR ALMOST A WEEK, HAVING TO BEG RIDES FROM PEOPLE JUST SO I CAN SUPPORT MY FAMILY WITH THE (2) JOBS THAT IM WORKING.

ECSL WENT OUT AND MY HIGH SCHOOL DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE CAR AT THE TIME AS WE WERE OUT OF TOWN, THIS COULD REALLY BE A HAZARD AND DEFINITELY WAS COSTLY AS FAR AS TOWING, THANK GOD WE HAVE AN EXTRA VEHICLE BUT SHE HAD TO FIND TRANSPORTATION, HAD THE STRESS BEING 17 AND NOT REALLY KNOWING WHAT TO DO, THE CAR SAT UNTIL WE GOT HOME TO HAVE TO TOWED TO DEALERSHIP, MISSED SOME OF SCHOOL. THIS PART DEFINITELY SHOULD BE RECALLED AND PUT BACK OUT THERE INDEFINITELY TO BE WARRANTIED. I HAD HEARD NOTHING PRIOR BUT GOOD THINGS ABOUT THIS VEHICLE AND THEN AFTER READING ABOUT THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL OF VEHICLE I AM PRAYING AFTER THE FIX THIS WILL BE THE ONLY TIME IT HAPPENS!

THE CAR DOESNT START BECAUSE THE CAR'S STARTING SYSTEM IS FAULTY. IT IS CALLED ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL) FAILURE. ONLY NISSAN DEALERS CAN FIX THIS ISSUE AND THEY CHARGE EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR REPLACING A SMALL PART AND FOR LABOR. THIS IS NOT CAUSED BY A USER ERROR BUT BECAUSE OF A DEFECT WITH THIS MODEL ITSELF. THERE ARE MANY SUCH COMPLAINS ONLINE AND HAPPENS TO PEOPLE RANDOMLY. THIS IS A SEVERE HEALTH AND LIFE HAZARD. ME AND MY WIFE WERE ABOUT TO LEAVE FOR REMOTE PLACES WHEN THIS ISSUE HAPPENED AND IF THAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A HUGE MESS! NISSAN DOES NOT EVEN HAVE THE COURTESY TO REIMBURSE THE FULL REPAIR AMOUNT. I DIDN'T EVEN ASK FOR THE HOTEL AND TRIP CANCELLATION REIMBURSEMENT BUT STILL THEY ARE NOT READY TO BUDGE. I ESCALATED IT TO THREE LEVELS BUT TO NO EFFECT. THIS IS SAD. THERE MUST BE A RECALL ON THIS MODEL. MY CAR JUST HAS 60K MILES ON IT AND I FEEL CHEATED TO HAVE TO PAY $1100 FOR NISSAN'S FAULT JUST FOR THE REPAIR, LET ALONE ADDITIONAL EXPENSES I HAD TO INCUR TO BOOK HOTEL LAST MINUTE FOR TWO DAYS AND INCUR CHARGES FOR THE HOTEL STAYS FOR THE REST OF MY TRIP. MY HONEYMOON TRIP WAS SCREWED UP BECAUSE OF NISSAN AND THEY ARE SAYING THEY CAN ONLY REIMBURSE ME FOR THE PART WHICH IS ONLY HALF THE COST. I WILL SELL THIS CAR AS SOON AS I CAN AND WILL NEVER EVER BUY A NISSAN CAR AGAIN. BUT, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS CAR RECALLED ASAP BEFORE IT LEADS TO SOMEONE'S DEATH.

I WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY AT A RELATIVES, HAD TO MOVE MY VEHICLE FROM THE DRIVEWAY TO THE STREETS. WHEN I CAME BACK OUT TO START MY VEHICLE TO GO HOME SIX HOURS LATER, IT WOULD NOT START. I CONTACTED TRIPLE A, THEY WASN'T SUCCESSFUL GETTING MY VEHICLE STARTED, SO I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO PEP BOYS WHICH WAS UNSUCCESSFUL, THEN I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP.

TAKATA RECALL. MY COMPLAINT IS REGARDING THE 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA STEERING LOCK FAILURE. MY LOCK FAILURE OCCURRED ON 05-22-16. I RETURNED HOME AFTER A DAY OF SPENDING TIME WITH SOME FRIENDS. I PARKED MY CAR AND LATER THAT EVENING, I DECIDED TO GO TO THE STORE. ONCE I GOT IN THE CAR, I COULDN'T START IT. THE BRAKE WAS REALLY HARD TO PUSH AND YELLOW KEY LIGHT ILLUMINATED FROM MY DASHBOARD. THE FOB WOULD ALLOW ME TO UNLOCK AND CLOSE DOORS. THE LIGHTS WORKED, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE THIS SITUATION OCCUR IN THE PARKING LOT OF MY APARTMENT COMPLEX OTHERWISE THE CAR COULD HAVE BROKEN DOWN SOMEWHERE REALLY UNSAFE. MY VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE NEAREST NISSAN DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS FIXED FOR $939.38

MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HER 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA AND PARKED. WHEN LEAVING TO GO HOME, THE CAR WOULD NOT AND COULD NOT START. THE KEY LOCK SYMBOL (RED) AND LOCK SYMBOL (YELLOW) WERE LIT ON THE DASHBOARD. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THE IT WAS THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK WHICH MANY HAS BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT. I TOOK IT TO THE NISSAN DEALER AND THE PART WOULD BE $600.00. ATTACHED IS THE PRINTOUT OF THE WARRANTY. THIS HAD ME AND MY WIFE STRANDED ON ONE OF THE COLDEST DAY OF THE YEAR. THEY WOULDN'T CONSIDER FIXING IT UNLESS IT WAS A STANDARD REPAIR. THIS IS CRAZY!!!
