ON APRIL 10, 2015 APPROXIMATELY 7:50 AM, I WAS DRIVING EAST BOUND ON SAND LAKE ROAD ORLANDO FLORIDA IN THE SLOW LANE WHEN A WHITE DODGE STRATUS SUDDENLY APPEARED OUT OF NO-WHERE TURNED INTO THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC CAUSING ME TO HIT HIS PASSENGER SIDE OF HIS CAR. THE AIRBAG LIGHT STARTED TO FLASH AND WOULD KEEP FLASHING UNTIL YOU SHUT THE CAR OFF. WE TOOK THE MURANO TO OUR LOCAL MECHANIC. HE PUT IT ON HIS COMPUTER SYSTEM AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH "DIAGNOSTIC MODULE WAS FAULTY". IT WOULD COST $800 FOR JUST THE PART AND 2 1/2 HOURS OF LABOR FOR A TOTAL OF $1093. I CONTACTED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS FOR THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE WERE NONE AT THE TIME AND WE WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE MURANO TO AN AUTHORIZED NISSAN DEALER FOR THE DIAGNOSIS. WE DID TAKE IT TO AN AUTHORIZED NISSAN DEALER AN HOUR AND HALF AWAY. AFTER A $73 CHARGE, THEY TOLD US THE EXACT SAME THING! I THEN CONTACTED NISSAN AGAIN AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY COULDN'T HELP US WITH THE COST OF THE REPAIR. I WOULD UNDERSTAND IF IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WE DIDN'T DO FOR MAINTENANCE, BUT IT WASN'T OUR FAULT THAT IT IS DEFECTIVE. I ASKED THEM IF THERE WAS GOING TO BE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THEY SAID NOT AT THIS TIME. THEY HAD ALSO INFORMED ME IF WE WOULD HAVE IT FIXED AND THERE WOULD BE A RECALL, THEY WOULD REIMBURSE US FOR THE COST OF REPLACEMENT. I ASKED THEM IF THEY COULD SEND ME A DOCUMENTATION SO I WOULD HAVE PROOF THAT THEY WOULD DO THAT BUT I HAVEN'T SEE ANYTHING FROM THEM. YOU WOULD THINK THAT NISSAN WOULD TRY TO RECALL PROACTIVELY BEFORE THERE IS A NEGATIVE BACK LASH ON THEIR COMPANY. IT SEEMS THAT CARMAKERS OVERALL ARE BECOMING MORE PROACTIVE IN THEIR RECALLS, PULLING VEHICLES BACK AND REPLACING PARTS TO ADDRESS CONSUMER'S SAFETY CONCERNS, EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY NOT BE OFFICIALLY REQUIRED TO DO SO. I WAS HOPING THAT MAYBE YOU COULD HELP US WITH OUR PROBLEM. IT'S JUST ALOT OF MONEY TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT THEY CAN'T GUARANTEE WON'T FIX THE PROBLEM. APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS AGO DUE TO NO FAULT OF OUR OWN AS WE WERE DRIVING OUR AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP IN OUR AREA. THEY TOLD US OUR AIR BAG CONTROL MONITOR WAS BAD AND OUR AIR BAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT. UPON ORDERING THE PART WE WERE TOLD THE PART IS ON BACKORDER. THEY ALSO TOLD US THAT WE HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED AT OUR OWN EXPENSE. THE SERVICE MANAGER PROCEEDED TO TELL MY WIFE AND I THAT THE PART IS ONLY WARRANTED FOR 3 YEARS WHEN THE CAR WAS NEW. NOW IT WAS OUR ISSUE SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED. *TR

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE AIR BAG MODULE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED, BUT THERE WAS NO GUARANTEED THAT THE REPAIR WOULD CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER CLEARED THE DEFAULT CODES AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS NO LONGER ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE AIR BAGS WOULD NOT OPERATE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. BATTERY HAD A DEAD CELL REMOVED BATTERY TO REPLACE BATTERY WAS OUT OF VEHICLE FOR APPROX. 5 MINUTES REPLACED THE BATTERY STARTED THE VEHICLE TO GET MILEAGE FROM ODOMETER, IDLED APPROX. 2 MIN WITH DRIVERS DOOR OPEN NO PASSENGERS IN VEHICLE. THE DEALER ADVISED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER ANY RECALL AND THAT THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR ANY REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, WHILE SITTING IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT, THE SEAT BROKE. THE SEAT WAS REPAIRED ACCORDINGLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 111,000.

DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS ON. I HAVE TAKEN THIS CAR IN TO APPROXIMATELY 16 TIMES TO 7 DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS IN FOUR DIFFERENT STATES. THEY SAID THEY REPLACED DIFFERENT PARTS EACH TIME BUT WITHIN FOUR TO SIX WEEKS THE AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN. THE LAST DEALERSHIP I TOOK IT TO IN COLUMBIA TN SAID THAT NISSAN HAD TOLD THEM TO REPLACE THE FRONT WIRING HARNESS BUT THEY REFUSED TO DO IT. THEY SAID IT WOULD TAKE THEM TOO LONG AND DID NOT WANT TO DO IT. *TR

2005 NISSAN MURANO WITH 31,000 MILES. THE AIRBAG LIGHT WAS FLASHING AND IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE AIRBAG SENSOR MODULE AND IT WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I WAS TOLD WITHOUT REPLACING IT MY AIRBAGS WOULD NOT WORK AND THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY. I HAD TO PAY OVER $1000 OR HAVE NO AIRBAGS TO PROTECT MY WIFE AND CHILD. LOOKING ON THE INTERNET I SEE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, IT LOOKS LIKE NISSAN SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO FIX THIS SINCE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

THE AIRBAG LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING WITHOUT APPARENT REASON, AND IT HAS BEEN FLASHING EACH TIME THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN SINCE THEN. THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND DEALERSHIP STATES DIAGNOSTIC WILL COST $85, PLUS COST OF REPAIR. I DON'T KNOW IF THE AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY CORRECTLY IN A CRASH, OR IF IT WILL DEPLOY WHEN IT IS NOT NEEDED, UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES. EITHER WAY, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TWELVE TIMES DUE TO THE FAILURE AND THEY ONLY PERFORMED A TEMPORARY REMEDY. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 36,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,000.

I PURCHASED MY 2005 NISSAN MURANO IN NOV 2005. ON FEB 24, 2006, I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALER BECAUSE THE AIRBAG LIGHT WAS FLASHING. THEY "ERASED ALL DTC'S AND RETESTED THE SYSTEM." IN MARCH 2006, I RETURNED WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. AT THAT TIME, THEY REPLACED THE DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE, SPIRAL CABLE, AND DIAGNOSTIC SENSOR. IT WAS OK FOR A YEAR, BUT THEN STARTED FLASHING AGAIN. I TOOK IT BACK ON OCT. 12, 2007. THEY REMOVED AND REPLACED THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG MODULE (AGAIN). THREE DAYS LATER, IT STARTED FLASHING AGAIN. I WASN'T ABLE TO TAKE IT IN AGAIN UNTIL MARCH 21, 2008. AT THAT TIME, THEY REPLACED THE APIRAL CABLE (AGAIN) AND INFORMED ME THAT IT MIGHT NOT BE FIXED BUT, ACCORDING TO NISSAN PROTOCOL, THAT'S ALL THEY COULD DO. IF IT STARTS FLASHING AGAIN, THEY CAN REPLACE THE NEXT PART. IN THE MEANTIME, I HAVE NO MORE OF AN IDEA TODAY THAT MY VEHICLE IS SAFE THAN I HAVE EVER HAD. EVEN IF I TAKE IT IN A 5TH OR 6TH TIME, HOW CAN I BE SURE IT WILL WORK IF AND WHEN I NEED IT? IN THE VERY BEGINNING, THEY DID REPLACE THE WHOLE UNIT, AND THAT DIDN'T WORK. I NO LONGER HAVE CONFIDENCE IN NISSAN'S SAFETY PROTOCOLS. *TR
