FOR MANY YEARS*, THE EXHAUST FROM MY NISSAN VERSA HAS MADE ME SICK (NAUSEOUS AND HEADACHES) SIMILAR TO HOW VW EXHAUST WOULD MAKE ME SICK. I AM CONCERNED THAT NISSAN VEHICLES MAY BE CHEATING ON INSPECTIONS CHECKS LIKE VW WAS DOING. EXHAUST FROM MANY OTHER VEHICLES MAY SMELL, BUT THIS PARTICULAR EXHAUST IS SICKENING. OUR VEHICLE PASSES EMISSION STANDARDS FOR MD EACH YEAR AND WE ALWAYS KEEP IT WELL MAINTAINED. SO AGAIN, I AM CONCERNED THEY HAVE SOFTWARE THAT WORKS TO FOOL EMISSIONS TESTING BY CHANGING THE EXHAUST ALLOWED WHEN HOOKED UP TO AN EMISSIONS TESTING COMPUTER. FOR A POINT OF REFERENCE, MY PARENTS OWN A 23 YEAR OLD FORD EXPLORER (ALSO WELL MAINTAINED) WHOSE EXHAUST DOES NOT CAUSE ME SICKNESS. THANK YOU FOR CONSIDERING THIS ISSUE! *THE FORM IS REQUIRING A SINGLE DATE, BUT THIS HAS BEEN CONTINUOUSLY MAKING ME SICK EACH TIME WE RUN THE VEHICLE (IT DOES NOT ABATE WITH MILEAGE OR WEATHER CONDITIONS) SINCE 2011-2012.
ENGINE COMPLETELY STALLED FOUR SEPARATE TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. WITHOUT WARNING, TOTALLY LOST POWER AND HAD TO COAST TO THE EMERGENCY LANE. AT FIRST, ENGINE WOULD RESTART, COUGH AND SPUTTER, THEN DIE. AFTER ABOUT TEN MINUTES, HOWEVER, IT RESTARTED LIKE NORMAL AND IT WAS LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. DROVE FINE FOR MONTHS UNTIL IT HAPPENED AGAIN. AND AGAIN. AND AGAIN. THIS STARTED OCCURRING WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 85,000 MILES. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER AFTER LAST INCIDENT (ABOUT 95,000 MILES) AND THEY SAID THEY RAN COMPLETE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, BUT COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. ADVISED ME TO HAVE VEHICLE BROUGHT IN NEXT TIME IT STALLS (BUT THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE TRANSITORY). I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY AND CONSIDER MYSELF LUCKY I DIDN'T GET REAR-ENDED.

EXHAUST BECAME VERY LOUD, RATTLING, ETC. VERIFIED THAT THE FLANGE ON THE MUFFLER HAD RUSTED OFF AT THE WELDS. MUFFLER HANGERS HELD THE MUFFLER IN PLACE. NOT ABLE TO COMMENT AS TO WHETHER OR NOT ANY DRIVERS OR PASSENGERS SUFFERED FROM C02 RELATED HEALTH OR BREATHING ISSUES.
THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME OF A BROKEN MID PIPE ON THE MUFFLER. I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE WERE TOLD THAT IT IS RELATED TO SALT ON THE ROADS. THE ISSUE APPEARS TO BE PERSISTENT ACROSS NISSAN VERSAS IN THE LATE 2000 MODELS (ESPECIALLY 2009). THERE IS A LOUD ROARING NOISE FROM THE MUFFLER AND A STRONG GASEOUS SMELL INSIDE WHEN THE ENGINE IS ON AND NO OTHER HEATING/COOLING FUNCTIONS ARE TURNED ON.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN A 30MPH CHICAGO STREET MY CAR ENGINE JUST SHUT OFF. I HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO TURN INTO A PARKING LOT AND ACTUALLY REACH A SPACE BUT THAT SPACE WAS TOW ZONE SO I HAD TO SIT THERE WITH MY CAR FOR 3 HOURS WHILE I WAITED FOR A TOW TRUCK BECAUSE IT WAS ACTUALLY RUSH HOUR. AFTER TAKING IT TO AAA CAR BODY SHOP, THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE ENGINE WAS JUST DEAD. AND AFTER THEY TOOK IT APART THEY COULD ONLY SPECULATE BUT WITH SOME CONFIDENCE FROM SEEING SOMETHING SIMILAR IN THE PAST THAT SOME SORT OF CHAIN INSIDE THE ENGINE SNAPPED AND STRUCK THE ENGINE AND CAUSED THE CYLINDERS TO COME TO A HALT. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT HE SAW SOMETHING SIMILAR IN A MID 2000'S SATURN. IN WHICH CASE IT ENDED UP BEING A RECALL FOR THAT LINE OF CAR. HE SAID IF YOU KEEP THE RECEIPT AND SOMEDAY IT ENDS UP BEING A RECALL, I COULD POSSIBLY GET A REFUND. ANYWAYS, THE BIGGER DEAL IS THAT THIS IS A HIGHLY HAZARDOUS BREAKDOWN. IM GLAD I WAS NOT ON A HIGHWAY WAITING 3 HOURS FOR A TOW. BUT IM ALSO GLAD I COULD COAST ON THE MOMENTUM I HAD. AFTER THE INITIAL BREAKDOWN THAT HAD A POPPING SOUND, MY CAR FELT HEAVY BECAUSE I LOST POWER STEERING AS WELL SO THE TURN INTO THE FORTUNATE PARKING SPACE WAS ACTUALLY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS NOT JUST TO ME BUT ALSO TO PEDESTRIANS. BECAUSE DURING THAT TIME IF I HAD TO SWERVE OUT OF THE WAY, I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO. ALSO THE BREAKS WERE HEAVY.. I HAD TO REALLY PRESS DOWN ON THEM TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. THATS ABOUT ALL I CAN SAY FROM MY MEMORY OF THIS INCIDENT. I DO HAVE MY RECORDS (RECEIPT FROM AAA)
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN VERSA. WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH, AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS HEARD NEAR THE REAR DRIVER SIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE MUFFLER EXHAUST FLANGE FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 88,000.
THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER FLANGE THAT CONNECTS TO THE INTERMEDIATE EXHAUST PIPE CORRODED AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NOW NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THERE'S NOT EVEN 30,000 MILES ON THE CAR. MOREOVER, THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE INTERMEDIATE PIPE AND THE MUFFLER ALSO CORRODED SO THE INTERMEDIATE PIPE HAD TO BE REPLACED. AT APPROXIMATELY 25,000 MILES I HAD TO HAVE THE MUFFLER AND TAILPIPE REPLACED BECAUSE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO HAD CORRODED AND THEY HAD SEPARATED. *TR
THIS MORNING WHEN I DROVE TO WORK AND CAME INTO THE PARKING GARAGE I NOTICED A LOUD NOISE MAKING MY VERSA S HATCHBACK SOUND LIKE A MONSTER TRUCK. I DROVE IT HOME ABOUT 15 MILES AND INSPECTED IT. APPEARS THE INCOMING MUFFLER PIPE "DISCONNECTED" FROM THE GASKET WITH A FAIRLY CLEAN BREAK. THIS HAPPENED ON THE SIDE OF THE MUFFLER CLOSER TO THE ENGINE AND FURTHEST AWAY FROM THE BACK OF THE HATCHBACK. CAUSING LOUD NOISE, SEEMS TO BE WORSE WHEN IDLED AT A STOP LIGHT/SIGN. FOUND A FORUM ONLINE THAT STATES THIS HAPPENS IN NORTHERN CLIMATES (I LIVE IN MI) AND A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE ACTUALLY EXPERIENCED SOONER THAN I DID. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN VERSA. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE CONTACT HEARD A RATTLING NOISE UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE MUFFLER WELDING FRACTURED DUE TO ROAD SALT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 89,000.
TRYING TO FIND OUT IF RECALL ON 2009 NISSAN VERSA. NOTICED CAR ENGINE SEEMED LOUDER THAN USUAL. MECHANIC FOUND 'MUFFLER NECK' (BRACKET WHERE PIPE FROM ENGINE GOES INTO MUFFLER) WAS RUSTED WITH A HOLE, HAD TO GET NEW MUFFLER AND GASKET ETC., $389.26 FOR PARTS/LABOR/TAX. MECHANIC SHOWED ME THE MUFFLER SYSTEM THAT HE REMOVED. REST OF MUFFLER/PIPE SYSTEM WAS NOT RUSTED, SO I'M SUSPECTING A DESIGN PROBLEM WHERE WATER IS SOMEHOW ACCUMULATING IN THAT ONE AREA TO RUST JUST THAT SPOT, BUT REQUIRING THE WHOLE SYSTEM THEN BE REPLACED. AT ABOUT 81,000 MILES AND CAR IS GARAGED, THIS DOES NOT SEEM LIKE NORMAL WEAR. I'VE READ OTHER COMPLAINTS POSTED ONLINE ALSO ABOUT THE MUFFLER SYSTEM ROTTING OUT TOO SOON, AND MANY SEEM TO BE ABOUT THE SAME MILEAGE AS MINE. EITHER A DESIGN AND/OR PARTS QUALITY ISSUE, IT SEEMS. *TR
MY NISSAN VERSA 2009 MUFFLER SEEMS TO BE CORRODING OR RUSTING TOO QUICKLY. WE FIRST REPLACED PARTS OF THE MUFFLER A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO (IN 2013) AND NOW THE MUFFLER IS GOING BAD AGAIN. I HAVE SEEN OTHER 2009 VERSA OWNER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE MUFFLERS ONLINE. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE DUE TO HAZARDOUS GASES THAT CAN LEAK INTO THE CABIN OR MUFFLERS THAT MAY FALL INTO THE ROAD. *TR
MUFFLER RUSTED THROUGH AND CRACKED THROUGH NORMAL DRIVING. I WAS LUCKY THAT THE PIECES DID NOT COME APART ON HIGHWAY AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. SEEMS LIKE A PRODUCT DEFECT THAT THE ONLY PART OF THE CAR UNDERCARRIAGE THAT RUSTED IS THE MUFFLER. HAD JUST HAD THE CAR SERVICED BY NISSAN WHO DID NOT EVER WARN ME THAT ANYTHING WAS OUT OF THE ORDINARY WITH THE MUFFLER. NOW I'M FORCED TO PAY ALMOST $600 FOR THE REPAIR. *TR
IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTUP, A LOUD RUMBLING NOISE SIMILAR TO AFTER MARKET EXHAUST WAS AUDIBLE AS WELL AS A STRONG VIBRATION DOWN THE CENTER LONG-AXIS OF THE CAR. I STEPPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND INSPECTED THE UNDERCARRIAGE TO FIND THAT THE FLANGE HAD ERODED AND THE MUFFLER WAS DANGEROUSLY LOOSE. NO RUST IS VISIBLE, AND THE UNDERCARRIAGE IS CLEAN, SO THIS IS NOT DUE TO INADEQUATE MAINTENANCE OR ROAD SALT. I HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE WHERE SERVICE STATIONS AND REPAIR SHOPS HAVE COMMENTED THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW IN THE VERSA MUFFLER, WHICH TYPICALLY FAILS BETWEEN 50-80K MILES. ALLOWING SUCH A FAILURE TO CONTINUE ON THE ROAD WITHOUT A RECALL MAY RESULT IN UNSAFE ROAD CONDITIONS FOR ALL DRIVERS; IF THE MUFFLER FALLS OFF, IT WILL BECOME AN OBSTACLE ON THE ROAD WHICH MAY IMPACT OTHER VEHICLES OR CAUSE DRIVERS TO SWERVE TO AVOID HITTING THE MATERIAL. *TR
THE MUFFLER IS MAKING NOISE. IT LOOKS LIKE IT HAS A LOT OF RUST. THE CAR HAS ONLY 25000 MILEAGE SO FAR. MUST BE A DEFECTIVE PART FROM THE COMPANY. *TR
MY OIL PLUG CAME OUT DURING A 45 MILE DRIVE HOME. I HAD MY OIL CHANGED IN FEB. AND IN JUNE IT FELL OUT DURING THE DRIVE. MY ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING AND ALMOST BLEW UP. IT WAS SMOKING UPON THE STOP TO LOOK AT IT. I PUT 4 QUARTS OF OIL IN IT AND IT CAME OUT IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. I HAD THE OIL PLUG REPLACED AND PUT 5 QUARTS OF OIL IN AND IT HAS BEEN FINE SINCE. *TR
MUFFLER FLANGE CONNECTING TO EXHAUST PIPE BROKE. THE WELD THAT CONNECTS THE MUFFLER TO THE EXHAUST PIPE BROKE. HAD TO REPLACE ENTIRE MUFFLER OVER A BROKEN WELD. COST OVER 300.00 TO FIX THE ISSUE. OF COURSE, NISSAN WAS NO HELP. *TR
MY SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON SO I DROPPED BY ADVANCED AUTO PARTS TO HAVE THEM PULL THE CODE. IT READ AS CYLINDER 4 MISFIRE. I TOOK IT IN TO MCGEE AUTO TO HAVE A DETAILED DIAGNOSTIC, WHICH INDICATED THAT I HAD A BAD COIL ON ONE OF MY SPARK PLUGS. I HAD FOUR SPARK PLUGS REPLACED, AN IGNITION COIL CHANGED, AND INTAKE MANIFOLD RESEALED; HOWEVER, AFTER LEAVING AND GETTING A FEW MILES UP THE ROAD THE SES LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I STOPPED AT ANOTHER ADVANCED AUTO TO HAVE THE CODE PULLED AND AGAIN IT READ AS A CYLINDER 4 MISFIRE. I CONTACTED THE REPAIR SHOP AND WAS ASKED TO BRING THE CAR BACK IN. THEY DID ANOTHER FULL WORK UP AND AGAIN FOUND EVERYTHING TO BE FINE. AFTER LEAVING THE SHOP AGAIN THE LIGHT CAME ON A FEW MILES UP THE ROAD. THIS HAPPENED REPEATEDLY, AND EVERY TIME THEY WOULD SHUT THE LIGHT OFF IT CAME BACK ON AND REMAINED ON. IN MARCH UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT, I RETURNED TO MCGEE AUTO AND THEY TOOK ANOTHER LOOK. AFTER POSTING MY SYMPTOMS INTO THE COMPUTER THEY NOTICED THAT MY ORIGINAL PLUGS HAD BEEN REPLACED WITH AFTERMARKET PLUGS. THEY REPLACED ALL FOUR PLUGS AND COIL, AND DID SOMETHING WITH THE FUEL INJECTION AT NO ADDITIONAL COST TO ME. AFTER LEAVING THE SHOP A COUPLE MILES UP THE ROAD, THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I TOOK THE CAR BACK IN ON MONDAY, 3/18. FURTHER RESEARCH ENTAILED A COMPRESSION TEST. CYLINDERS 1 THROUGH 3 HAD 130% COMPRESSION, BUT CYLINDER 4 ONLY HAD 70% COMPRESSION. I WAS ADVISED THAT THE ISSUE IS AN ENGINE PROBLEM AND WITHOUT TEARING IT DOWN THEY ARE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE EXACT CAUSE, BUT IT COULD HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE PISTON IN CYLINDER 4. IN CONTACTING NISSAN, THEY FOUND THAT MY WARRANTY COVERAGE IS FOR 60,000 MILES AND UNFORTUNATELY I WAS AT 66,000. WHEN ASKING WHAT THIS REALLY MEANS I WAS TOLD THAT I WILL LIKELY NEED A NEW ENGINE OR A NEW CAR BECAUSE IT WOULD BE COSTLY TO TEAR DOWN THE ENGINE TO FIND THE PROBLEM. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE FLANGE THAT CONNECTS THE MANIFOLD TO THE ENGINE ALONG WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 56,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WHEN I WENT TO PROCEED THROUGH AN INTERSECTION AFTER BEING STOPPED FOR A RED LIGHT MY CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER. IT MADE CLUNKING NOISES AND EVEN THOUGH I KEPT GIVING IT MORE GAS I BARELY MADE IT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. I THEN STEERED INTO THE SHOULDER AND TURNED OFF THE CAR, WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND STARTED IT AGAIN. THE ENGINE STARTED BUT I STILL HAD NOISES AND NO POWER TO MOVE FORWARD. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT NEW AND HAVE ALL THE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE DONE. THEY DID A THOROUGH INSPECTION AND SEVERAL ROAD TESTS TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM BUT COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEM WITH THE CAR AND NOW HAVE A LOSS OF CONFIDENCE AND AM CONCERNED THAT THIS MAY HAPPEN AGAIN. AFTER MY BREAKDOWN I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND NO ONE IS ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM.
HAVE HAD PROBLEMS STARTING 2009 NISSAN VERSA, PROBLEM BEGINS WITH LONG STARTS, CAR TURNS OVER 6 OR MORE REVOLUTIONS BEFORE STARTING, THEN LEADS LATER TO THE CAR TURNING OVER AND NOT STARTING AT ALL. DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR THE FIRST TIME, FUEL PUMP THE SECOND TIME AND NOW THEY STATE THEY ARE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE WITH NO CORRECTIVE ACTION BEING DONE THE VEHICLE. IF CAR IS ABLE TO BE STARTED IT RUNS VERY CHOPPY, DEALER INSISTED IT WAS A COMPRESSION PROBLEM, BUT NOW CLAIMS THERE SHOULD NOT BE A CONTINUING PROBLEM. FIRST ISSUE WAS AT 8440 MILES, SECOND AND THIRD AT 14,959 MILES. *TR
I HAVE A 2009 VERSA THAT HAS APPROX 3800 MILES. THIS HAPPENED OUT OF NO WHERE: THE CAR HAD BEEN DRIVING FINE UNTIL I CAME TO A STOP AT A LIGHT. THE CAR BEGAN TO HESITATE LIKE IT WAS GOING TO DIE. I PUSHED THE GAS AND IT WAS STILL HESITATING AS I DROVE. I FINALLY, STOP AND TURNED OFF THE CAR AND BEGAN DRIVING IT AGAIN. IT WAS OKAY UNTIL I CAME TO A STOP AGAIN AND IT STARTED ALL OVER. IT FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO DIE WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND SOMEONE WOULD COME BEHIND ME AND HIT ME. THERE WAS NO ENGINE LIGHT INDICATORS SHOWING ANY PROBLEMS. I FELT UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND ASKED THE DEALER TO TOW THE VEHICLE TO BE CHECKED OUT. THE DEALER IS WORKING ON IT BUT SAID THAT IT MAY BE THE CRANK SENSOR, THAT WAS THE CODE WHEN THEY PUT THE COMPUTER TO THE CAR. THE DEALER DROVE THE CAR AND WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. *TR
THE CAR WONT START HALF OF THE TIME. ITS TAKES TWO TIMES TO START THE CAR. USUALLY THE CAR CRANKS FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS BEFORE IT WILL START. IT HAS BEEN THIS WAY FOR ABOUT 10 DAYS. *TR
I HAVE A 2009 NISSAN VERSA THAT HAS A LITTLE OVER 11,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE STARTED EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM WITH IT NOT WANTING TO START THE FIRST TIME ALONG WITH IT DYING AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE DRIVING. MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. I HAVE ALREADY HAD IT TO VICTORY NISSAN IN KNOXVILLE, TN THREE TIMES AND I'M TAKING BACK AGAIN FOR THE FOURTH TOMORROW AND THEY ARE STILL ADVISING NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE CAR. I HAD THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR REPLACED, BUT THE CAR IS STILL NOT RUNNING PROPERLY. IT RECENTLY DIED IN MY APARTMENT COMPLEX AND WOULD NOT START BACK AND I HAD TO HAVE SOME INDIVIDUALS HELP PUSH IT INTO A PARKING SPOT. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE STOP IN TRAFFIC ON THE INTERSTATE AND ALSO ON OTHER STREETS, WHICH POSES A CONCERN FOR ME BEING ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING THIS VEHICLE.
