MY TOYOTA CAMRY CONSUMES AN EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF OIL. I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN SUMMER 2013 WITH APPROX 35,000 MILES, AND WITHIN TWO-THREE MONTH AFTER MY FIRST OIL CHANGE, THE LOW OIL WARNING LAMP WOULD TURN ON AT HARD BRAKING. IT TURNED OUT THAT THE OIL LEVEL WAS CRITICALLY LOW EVEN THOUGH IT HAD BEEN VERY RECENTLY CHANGED. I WAS LUCKY TO DISCOVER IT WHEN I WAS CLOSE TO HOME SO I WAS ABLE TO ADD OIL. THE INSPECTION OF THE CAR DID NOT REVEAL ANY OIL LEAKS. I NOW HAVE TO ADD OIL EVERY SEVERAL WEEKS EVEN THOUGH THE CAR HAS BARELY TOUCHED 50,000 MILES. THE CAR IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY. HAD I EMBARKED ON A LONG TRIP RIGHT BEFORE THE OIL LEVEL FELL LOW ENOUGH TO TRIGGER THE LOW OIL WARNING LIGHT, I COULD HAVE EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE ENGINE AS OPEN HIGHWAY DRIVING DOES NOT USUALLY REQUIRE HARD BRAKING. AS A RESULT I WOULD HAVE NOT FOUND OUT THAT THE ENGINE WAS OUT OF OIL AND COULD HAVE SUDDENLY STALLED CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS CAR. BEFORE IT WAS SERVICED AS A TOYOTA DEALER AND THE MAINTENANCE PAPERWORK THAT CAME WITH THE CAR DID NOT POINT TO ANY ISSUES WITH THE HIGHER THAN NORMAL OIL CONSUMPTION. PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL PEOPLE GET HURT IN ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY FAILED ENGINES AND MAKE TOYOTA TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AS THE OIL CONSUMPTION IS GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE WITH TIME AND MILES DRIVEN. INSTEAD OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION PEOPLE MAY START GETTING KILLED FROM SUDDEN STOPS CAUSED BY FAILED ENGINES!!! *TR
THE CAR IS CONSUMING EXCESSIVE OIL. HAVE TO ADD 2-3 QUARTS OF OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES ABOUT 5000 MILES. PROBLEM STARTED AROUND 35000 MILES. IT NOW HAS 65400 MILES. THE CONSUMPTION HAS PROGRESSIVELY INCREASED. *TR
DRIVING NORTH ON A HIGHWAY I EXPERIENCED THE BATTERY CHECK AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON, AS WELL AS LOST POWER STEERING. PULLED OFF AT THE FIRST AVAILABLE EXIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED, ENGINE WAS NO LONGER POWERING THE WHEELS AND I COASTED TO A STOP ON A RAMP WHERE I WAS FORCED TO WAIT FOR POLICE ASSISTANCE. OPENING THE HOOD I SAW THE SERPENTINE BELT THROWN OFF THE ENGINE AND STEAMING FROM THE BELT SIDE, AFTER POLICE HELPED ME PUSH THE CAR TO A NEARBY PARKING LOT THERE WAS NOTICEABLE WOBBLE IN THE WATER PUMP WHICH ALLOWED ANTIFREEZE TO LEAK OUT AND GET SPRAYED INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE NEXT DAY THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO WANTED TO RUN A DIAGNOSTIC AND THEN WANTED TO DISASSEMBLE THE ENGINE TO SEE THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE CYLINDER HEAD WAS WARPED DUE TO THE LOSS OF COOLANT WHEN THE WATER PUMP FAILED AND THAT THEY SAW THIS OFTEN ENOUGH TO BE SURE OF THE CAUSE. WATER PUMP FAILED AT AROUND 31,000 MILES WITH NO LEAKAGE BEFOREHAND. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE CAMRY THAT TOYOTA IS REFUSING TO ADMIT TO AND ASSIST IN REPAIRS. DUE TO SELF MAINTENANCE OF CAR THEY CLAIM DAMAGE WAS MOST LIKELY SHOWING AND IGNORED BY US. *TR
MY OIL LIGHT BLINKED ONCE ON MY WAY HOME. I CHECKED THE OIL THE NEXT MORNING BEFORE STARTING THE CAR AND IT SHOWED NO OIL ON THE DIPSTICK! WE ADDED 4 1/2 QTS OF OIL. I HAD NEVER BEEN SO MUCH AS A 1/2 QT LOW AT OIL CHANGE. THERE ARE NO LEAKS. THE OIL LIGHT NEVER STAYED ON AS A WARNING. MY MOTOR COULD HAVE CONCEIVABLY BURNED UP WITHOUT MY KNOWING THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG. MY 5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE IS NOW USING AT LEAST 1/2 - 1 QTS OF OIL EVERY 1200 MILES. WE HAVE A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH 245,000 MILES THAT ONLY USES APPROX. 1/2 QT OIL PER 3,000 MILES. AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET, I CAN SEE THAT MINE IS NOT A SINGULAR EVENT. TOYOTA SHOULD BE MADE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE OIL WOULD DISPENSE RAPIDLY AT APPROXIMATELY EVERY 2,000 MILES. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DIAGNOSED AND WAS PLACED IN A 1,000 MILE CONSUMPTION TEST. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,800.
THE VEHICLE HAD A WATER PUMP LEAK AND WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. I NOTICED THE DROP IN THE COOLANT LEVEL AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP, THE VEHICLE MADE A LOUD BANG SOUND AND STALLED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT MULTIPLE WARNING LAMPS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS MERGED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BUT FAILED TO RESTART AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE WATER PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 56,000.
UPON RESEARCHING THE SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST OF MY 2009 CAMRY LE, I FOUND LOTS OF ONLINE FORUMS WITH OWNERS OF THE CAMRY THAT HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THERE ARE DISCUSSIONS OF LAWSUITS BECAUSE TOYOTA ISN'T TAKING ANY RESPONSIBILITY. I CALLED TOYOTAS CORPORATE OFFICE AND THEY SAID THEY NEVER HEARD OF THE ISSUE, HOWEVER JUST BY A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH I FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS HIGHLIGHTING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE SAME CAR AND ALL EXPERIENCE THE ISSUE POST 60K MILES, WHICH IS OUTSIDE THE WARRANTY. I ALSO WENT TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY SEEMED VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE ISSUE BUT [XXX] FROM NORTH HOLLYWOOD TOYOTA STATED THAT TOYOTA?S CORPORATE OFFICE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. THIS IS A HEALTH HAZARD, AS EACH TIME I POWER ON THE CAR AFTER AN HR OF THE CAR BEING UNDER THE HOT OR COLD WEATHER AND A BIG CLOUD OF SMOKE COMES OUT OF MY EXHAUST VENT. TOYOTA REFUSED TO HELP ME ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AND SIMPLY GAVE ME A CASE # [XXX] AND ASKED TO GO GET THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED MYSELF. I PURCHASED MY 2009 CAMRY LE BRAND NEW IN JULY OF 2008 FROM TOYOTA. DURING A RECENT ROUTINE SERVICE APPOINTMENT FOR AN OIL CHANGE, ONE OF THE MECHANICS NOTED IN THE SYSTEM THAT MY CAR WAS EXCESS OIL IN JUNE OF 2013. TOYOTA SUGGESTED AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. IN MAY OF 2014 THE CAR WAS BROUGHT BACK TO TOYOTA WITH APPROX. 85,000 MILES. TOYOTA DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH MY OIL CONSUMPTION, AND THE CAR WAS IN FACT BURNING MORE OIL THAN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. THEY ASKED MY PERMISSION TO REMOVE THE ENGINE CYLINDER HEAD, DUE TO THEIR BELIEF THAT THEY OIL WAS LEAKING INSIDE OF THE ENGINE. AFTER THEIR REMOVAL OF THE ENGINE HEAD, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT OIL HAD LEAKED INSIDE OF THE PISTONS DUE TO FAILURE OF THE PISTON RINGS. THE SERVICE ADVISER AND SERVICE DIRECTOR TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A "KNOWN PROBLEM". THE ENGINE SHORT BLOCK WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. IN TURN, I ASKED THEM WHETHER THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AND THEY PHYSICALLY POINTED TO SIX TOYOTA CAMRY''S WHO WERE ALL GETTING ENGINE REPLACEMENTS (SHORT BLOCK ONLY) DUE TO THE SAME RING FAILURES. WHEN I PROBED WHETHER THIS WAS A RECALL, THEY SAID TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED THIS BUT HAS ISSUED SEVERAL TECHNICAL MEMOS' ABOUT THE ISSUE. AFTER READING NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT ENGINE FAILURE IN FAIRLY LOW MILEAGE VEHICLES FOR THE SAME REASONS I WAS COMPELLED TO NOTIFY YOUR AGENCY. IT IS VERY APPARENT THAT TOYOTA HAS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THEIR ENGINES AT LEAST IN THE 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. UNFORTUNATELY, MANY CONSUMERS HAVE LOST MONEY, VEHICLES EVEN TO THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT TOYOTA OWNING UP TO WHAT THEIR SERVICE MANAGERS AND MECHANICS DESCRIBED TO ME AS A 'DESIGN FLAWS IN THEIR ENGINE. I WAS TOLD THEY REDESIGNED THE ENGINE SHORT BLOCK TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WHICH THEY ARE NOW PUTTING INTO THEIR NEW CARS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE PISTONS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 117,000.
DEALER SUSPECTED CRACK IN ENGINE BLOCK DURING ROUTINE SERVICE. CONFIRMED BY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. ORIGIN UNKNOWN. VEHICLE NEVER INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT. CRACK EXTENDS FROM MAIN MOTOR MOUNT APPROXIMATELY 12 INCHES. NO EXPLANATION. SECOND OWNER. POSITIVE CARFAX. *TR
I WAS DRIVING THE CAR TO WORK AND THE ABS LIGHT AND RED BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON IN THE DASHBOARD. ALSO, THE RPM GAUGE WAS GOING UP AND DOWN. I STOPPED AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. WHEN I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON, THE LIGHTS CAME BACK. I TOOK IT INTO JUST A JIFFY LUBE BECAUSE IT WAS THE CLOSEST CAR PLACE NEAR ME. THEY CHECKED THE BRAKE LIGHTS, BRAKE FLUID, CAR BATTERY, AND CHECKED FOR FUNCTIONAL ISSUES. THERE WERE NONE. I TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY DID A DIAGNOSTIC THAT CAME BACK WITH CODE U0029 FOR COMMUNICATION LOSS AT SKID CONTROL (ECU) - ENGINE CONTROL UNIT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THEY ALSO CHECKED OUT ALL OPERATIONAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CAR AND DID NOT FIND ANY OTHER ISSUES. THEY GAVE A $2K ESTIMATE TO REPAIR THE ECU. THE CAR IS STILL DRIVEABLE AND THE LIGHTS STILL COME ON INTERMITTENTLY. SOMETIMES WHEN THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT COME ON THOUGH, THE AIR CONDITIONING STOPS WORKING AND THEN THE SPEDOMETER STICKS AT 0. IF I STOP THE CAR AND TURN IT BACK ON, IT SOMETIMES CLEARS UP. THE VEHICLE IS ONLY 6 YEARS OLD. I HAD MY LAST TOYOTA FOR 14 YEARS AND DROVE IT FOR 239K MILES. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF A USUALLY RELIABLE VEHICLE AND THINK IT MUST BE A DEFECT. *TT

THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND THE RPMS DECREASED AS THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. THE FAILURE WAS RECURRING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM AND ADVISED THAT THERE WERE NO FAILULRES WITH THE VEHICLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,200.
CAR WAS RUNNING ROUGH, WENT DOWN MY DRIVE WAY, ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. HAD IT TOWED TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD COOLANT IN CYLINDERS AND ENGINE WAS WRECKED. *TR
2007 - 2009 TOYOTA CAMRYS HAVE BEEN NOTED TO HAVE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUES. MY CAMRY IS BURNING APPROXIMATELY 2 QTS EVERY 3,000 MILES. PER TOYOTA'S REQUEST, MY CAR HAS BEEN ROUTINELY SERVICED BY TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS; HOWEVER, NO ONE HAS EVER BROUGHT THE KNOWN ISSUE WITH MY MODEL YEAR TO MY ATTENTION. THE MOST I'VE EVER HEARD, "YOUR CAR WAS A LITTLE LOW ON OIL." WITH A PUBLISHED SERVICE BULLETIN, TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE NOTIFIED ALL EFFECTED OWNERS WITH THIS INFORMATION. AS THE SOLE OWNER, AND WITH 99,000 MILES, MY CAMRY IS BEYOND THEIR WARRANTY, AND WILL REQUIRE AN ENGINE REBUILD TO MITIGATE THE ISSUE. THIS IS A POOR DESIGN BY TOYOTA AND IS UNACCEPTABLE. *TR

THE ARMS OF THE MOTOR MOUNT ARE DEFECTIVE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHAKE HEAVILY AT A STOPPED POSITION OR EVEN STALL WHEN VEHICLE IS IN REVERSE WITH THE BRAKE SLIGHTLY RELEASED. MY PREVIOUS 1999 CAMRY HAD THE SAME ISSUE. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED, IN AUGUST 2011, ONE OF THE ARMS ON MY 2009 CAMRY DUE TO CRACKS IN THE MOUNT YET THE ISSUE IS RE-OCCURRING AGAIN. *TR
VEHICLE BURNS APPROXIMATELY 2+ QUARTS OF OIL BETWEEN CHANGES. OIL CHANGE AND MAINTENANCE IS EVERY 5,000 MILES AS RECOMMENDED BY THE DEALER AND PERFORMED AT THE DEALER. THE CAR NOW HAS 56,120 MILES ON IT. I EXPLAINED IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY ARE PERFORMING AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. I HAVE READ ABOUT MANY COMPLAINTS WITH THIS 4 CYLINDER ENGINE AND THE BURNING OIL PROBLEM. *TR
I TOOK MY CAMRY TO AUTOLAND DEALER SHIP FOR REGULAR 65,000 MILE SERVICE, I WAS TOLD THERE IS A WATER PUMP FAILURE. I WOULD LIKE TO INVESTIGATE AND SEE IF THERE ARE PROBLEMS KNOWN FOR HYBRID CAMRY FOR PUMP FAILURE. I AM ALSO AN OWNER OF TOYOTA PRIYS ON WHICH TOYOTA HAD A VOLUNTARY RE-CALL ON HYBRID WATER PUMP, AND MECHANICAL SHOULD ALSO BE CHECKED. I DID SPEAK WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE AND ASKED THEM I SHOULD NOT BE PAYING $650.00 FOR THIS PUMP FAILUER. PLEASE ADVISE ME OF MY RIGHTS AND COURSE OF ACTION WITH TOYOTA FOR INVESTIGATION. ENGINE OVERHEATING AFTER A FEW BLOCKS DRIVE OIL BURNING TOO FAST WENT TO THE DEALER BEFORE MY WARRANTY EXPIRED BUT NO HELP THEY WAITED TO FIND THE PROBLEM UNTIL MY WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED NOW THEY DON'T WANT TO FIX IT UNLESS I PAY $5,000 OUT OF MY POCKET WITH 2,000 REIMBURSEMENT I SEE NO REASON FOR THIS IF I WENT IN BEFORE MY WARRANTY WAS OUT. REF: TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN "T-SB-0094-11" DATED AUG 11, 2011 BACKGROUND: CAR PURCHASED IN 2011 AS A CERTIFIED USED TOYOTA, APPROX 34K MILES, CURRENTLY HAS ABOUT 72K MILES ISSUE: PARTS IN THE ENGINE ARE KNOWN TO CREATE PROBLEMS BY TOYOTA, CUSTOMERS NOT NOTIFIED AND MOST OF THE COMPLAINTS I'VE READ ARE OF CUSTOMERS WITH MILEAGE UPWARDS OF 60K WHO HAVE NOW BEEN ADVISED BY TOYOTA THAT THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COSTLY ENGINE REPAIRS. TOYOTA ANALYSTS/ADJUSTERS INFORMED ME THAT SINCE ONLY ABOUT 4% OF THE TOYOTA ENGINES ARE AFFECTED BY THIS BAD ENGINE PART THEY ARE NOT DOING A RECALL. I ASKED THEM WHY I HADN'T BEEN INFORMED IN WRITING OF THIS KNOWN DEFECT AND THEIR ANSWER WAS THAT THEY ONLY ADVISE THEIR TECHNICIANS. THIS INFORMATION COULD HAVE HELPED ME BE MORE ALERT AND UNDERSTAND WHY I WAS HAVING TO PERFORM SO MANY OIL CHANGES AND TO ALSO PROMPT ME TO GET MY CAR TESTED AT A TOYOTA FACILITY. MY CAR WAS STILL RUNNING, THE ENGINE DIDN'T SEIZE UP. THE PISTON PARTS THAT WERE BAD FINALLY BROKE BUT SINCE TOYOTA CLAIMS IT WAS A "FAILURE TO MAINTAIN LUBRICATION" ISSUE THEY FEEL THEY ARE NOT LIABLE. THEY ALSO SAID I SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHECKING MY OIL EVERY SINGLE TIME I TURNED ON MY CAR!!! WELL I'M GATHERING ALL OF MY DOCUMENTATION OF MY SERVICE MAINTENANCE RECORDS AND WILL BE RETAINING A LAWYER. I TRULY BELIEVE IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE MORE CUSTOMERS COME FORWARD AND THIS BECOMES THE NEXT CIVIL ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST TOYOTA. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 92,000.
