The digital speedometer display has stopped working. I can no longer see my speed or fuel gauge. I was quoted nearly $3,000 at the dealer to repair the vehicle.
AS I WAS DRIVING ON A ROAD, ABOUT 25 MPH, WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL THE CAR JUST DECREASED IT'S SPEED TO A STOP AS I CONTINUALLY PUSHED MY FOOT ON THE PEDAL.
ON TWO OCCASIONS, JUNE 22, 2018 AND AUGUST 15, 2018 THIS VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WHILE USING CRUISE CONTROL AND TRAVELING AT SPEED ON GENERALLY FLAT, STRAIGHT, 4 LANE ROAD IN GOOD WEATHER. I HAVE ATTACHED DOCUMENTS WITH SUMMARIES OF EACH EVENT AND MAPS SHOWING ROUTE AND TERRAIN DURING THE EVENTS. HARD BRAKING SLOWED BUT DID NOT STOP THE VEHICLE EITHER TIME. BOTH TIMES, AFTER TRAVELING SOME DISTANCE WHILE BRAKING BUT CONTINUING TO ACCELERATE WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR, THE VEHICLE MADE A THUNKING NOISE FELT THROUGH THE FLOOR OF THE CAR AND SUDDENLY STOPPED ACCELERATING. IN THE FIRST INCIDENT THIS WAS AFTER ABOUT 2 MILES, THE SECOND TIME AFTER ABOUT A MILE. AFTER EACH INCIDENT I PHONED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT IF THEY COULD REPLICATE THE EVENT THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT. I REPORTED THE EVENTS TO CORPORATE TOYOTA AND AN INVESTIGATION WAS OPENED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FRED ANDERSON TOYOTA OF ASHEVILLE WHERE THEY SPENT SEVERAL DAYS WITH THE CAR, INTERACTING WITH TOYOTA, WHO WAS ASKING THEM TO EXPLORE AND TEST VARIOUS THINGS RELATED TO THE DUAL PEDAL FAIL SAFE, THE COMPUTER, SNAPSHOTS OF EVENTS ON THE COMPUTER ETC. THEIR FINAL JUDGEMENT WAS THAT FLOOR MATS MAY HAVE INTERFERED, THOUGH IT WAS THE FIRST THING I CHECKED WHEN I REGAINED CONTROL OF THE CAR.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE PARKING THE VEHICLE, IT UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED AND STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE BEFORE CRASHING INTO AN APARTMENT UNIT. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CALLED AND PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH AN INVESTIGATOR WHO REMOVED A BOX FROM THE VEHICLE, WHICH WOULD DETERMINE IF THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO DRIVER ERROR OR A SAFETY DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER DETERMINED THAT IT WAS DRIVER ERROR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 53,000.
MY PRIUS SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TODAY. MY WIFE WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT. MY VIN IS [XXX]. I SPOKE WITH MY WIFE AND THE INCIDENT OCCURRED UP A HILL WHEN SHE WAS PARKING (DECELERATING), SHE DIDN'T NOTICE THAT THE FLOOR MAT WAS NOT STUCK AT THE TIME AND THERE WAS NO WARNING OF A PROBLEM. TODAY FEB 12, 2015 AT APPROXIMATELY 11:40 AM A WHITE SPORTS CAR LICENSE PLATE [XXX] WAS DANGEROUSLY WEAVING IN AND OUT OF CARS AND COULD HAVE CAUSED A CRASH. LOCATION WAS ON REDMOND WAY 202 GOING TOWARDS THE 520 HIGHWAY GOING TOWARDS SEATTLE. THIS PERSON IS A RECKLESS DRIVER, PLEASE KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THIS CAR. THANK YOU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO THE FLOORBOARD WHILE THE RPMS INCREASED AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP. THE VEHICLE EVENTUALLY CAME TO A STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BUT THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED IN MAY OF 2010 AND THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000.

I WAS GOING UP THE ON RAMP TO I -75 EXIT 341 IN FLORIDA WHEN I LOST ALL POWER STEERING AND BRAKING AND THE CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM LIGHT CAME ON. CARS WERE COMING AT ME AT 70 MPH AND COULD HAVE KILLED MY WIFE AND I. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I HAVE REPORTED THE PROBLEM OF CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM LIGHT COMING ON AND LOSING ALL POWER. APRIL 23,2014 ENTERED A PARKING STRUCTURE, WHEN PARKING THE CAR, THE CAR ACCELERATED, WITHOUT REASON. CAR HIT AND BROKE THE PARKING BARRIER, WHICH WAS A OAK LOG. REPORTED TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP BUT DID NOT WANT TO VIEW THE CAR, CLAIMED IT WAS PROBABLY OPERATOR ERROR. FOOT BOTH ON GAS AND BRAKE AT SAME TIME. I DO NOT DRIVE WITH TWO FEET, SAID DID NOT THINK IT WAS THAT. HE THEN REFERRED ME TO THE TOYOTA CORPORATE LINE, I HAVE A FILE WITH THEM ABOUT THE ACCELERATION ISSUE. JUST HAPPY THIS HAPPENED IN A PARKING STRUCTURE AND NOT IN A CROSSWALK SITUATION WHERE A PEDESTRIAN COULD HAVE BEEN HIT. *TR
WHILE RETURNING FROM WORK AT 5:30 PM, 02/18/14 ON HIGHWAY 90 WEST TO ALBANY, NY, WITH CRUISE CONTROL SET TO 50 MPH, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL GOT STUCK ON MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE PEDAL DID NOT RETURN BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL POSITION EVEN WHEN I TURNED OFF CRUISE CONTROL. I SPONTANEOUSLY TAPPED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IN THE HOPE OF RELEASING BUT DID NOT YIELD ANY RESULTS AND THE VEHICLE MAINTAINED ITS SPEED. APPLYING BRAKES MADE NO EFFECT AND DID NOT CURTAIL THE CAR. IT CONTINUED TO MOVE WITH ALMOST THE SAME SPEED EVEN WHEN BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED. I HAD NO CONTROL ON MY CAR IN ONE OF BUSIEST FREEWAYS. I CONTINUOUSLY APPLIED THE BRAKES AND TRIED TO MERGE TO THE RIGHT MOST LANE WITH HAZARD BLINKERS ON. IT TOOK MORE THAN 5 MILES PANIC RIDE TRYING TO AVOID TRUCKS AND OTHER CARS TO MERGE TO THE RIGHT LANE. EVEN WITH THE BRAKE FULLY DEPRESSED, THE 2010 PRIUS DID NOT SLOW DOWN AND I MANAGED TO REACH THE SHOULDER LANE WHICH HAD GRAVEL & SNOW. THEN I PRESSED PARK BUTTON AND SWITCHED OFF THE ENGINE BY PRESSING THE POWER BUTTON. I COULD FEEL THE WHEELS LOCK UP BUT THE PRIUS CONTINUED TO MOVE WITH STRONG RUBBER BURNING SMELL. FINALLY, I ENGAGED THE PARKING BREAKS TO STOP IT FROM MOVING INTO THE FREEWAY. AFTER COMPLETE STOP, WITH DIFFICULTY I MANUALLY PULLED UP THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS ENTIRE ORDEAL WAS SHOCKING AND AN UNBELIEVABLE NARROW ESCAPE FROM A MAJOR CATASTROPHIC EVENT. I THANKED GOD & CALLED 911 AND THE HIGHWAY PATROL POLICE CAME TO THE SPOT AND PROMPTLY HELPED TO MOVE THE VEHICLE AND MYSELF FROM THE FREEWAY TRAFFIC. THE 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WAS MOVED TO TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE CENTER WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR & PERFORMED EVERY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE SERVICE PUNCTUALLY. INCIDENTALLY THE LAST SERVICE AND CERTIFICATION WAS IN 12/2013. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT EVEN REGULAR DEALER MAINTENANCE SERVICE AND CERTIFICATION DID NOT HELP THIS VEHICLE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT LOOKED BACK AT THE COMPUTER ON THE CAR AND SAW TWO INSTANCES WHERE THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR WERE PRESSED AT THE SAME TIME. SO NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO TELL ME IT IS USER ERROR. THEY SAID I MUST HAVE INADVERTADLY HIT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHILE I WAS BRAKING. NO I DID NOT!!! I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR FOR OVER THREE YEARS AND THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. NOW IT HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS. I DON'T THINK SO... I CALLED TOYOTA CORPORATE AND THEY ADVISED ME TO GET A SECOND OPINION. SO NOW I AM TAKING IT TO VOSS TOYOTA IN BEAVERCREEK. TODAY, 1/21/2013 AT APPROXIMATELY 245PM WHILE DRIVE BACK FROM DISNEY WITH MY FAMILY ON THE FLORIDA TURNPIKE(MILE POINT MARKER 294 NB) AT APPROXIMATELY 65-70 MPH OUR 2010 PRIUS SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND "CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM" CAME ON. MIND YOU I WAS TRAVELING ON A MAJOR ROAD WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY KEPT DECREASING IN SPEED AND I JUST TURNED ON TO THE MEDIAN AND THE CAR ROLLED TO A STOP. LUCKILY THERE WAS A FLORIDA SAFETY PATROL BEHIND ME WHO PUT ON HIS FLASHING LIGHTS UNTIL I WAS SAFELY OFF THE TURNPIKE. CAR WOULD NOT RESTART AND HAD TO BE TOWED. 2010 PRIUS 4 DR HATCHBACK THE SPEED CONTROL ON MY PRIUS USES RADAR TO SPEED UP AND SLOW DOWN. IF I COME UP ON A CAR DOING 45 MPH AND I'M AT 55, THE VEHICLE SLOWS DOWN. WHEN I TURN TO THE OTHER TRAFFIC LANE, AND THE LANE IS CLEAR THE CAR ACCELERATES RAPIDLY. ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS I HAVE BRAKED TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL, I FELL LIKE I DON'T HAVE CONTROL OF THE CAR. THE FIX: ADJUST THE COMPUTER SO SPEED ACCELERATION IS SLOWER. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO HER HEAD AND A TORN MENISCUS TO HER KNEE. THE TREATMENT FOR HER RELATED INJURIES HAD BEEN ON-GOING SINCE THE CRASH OCCURRED. THE CONTACT NO LONGER OWNS THE VEHICLE.
