PASSENGER SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WARPING CAUSING LEAK WHICH IN TURN CAUSING VEHICLE TO RUN IMPROPERLY AND EFFECTING PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY ISSUE. ENGAGING ACCELERATOR WITH THE LEAK CAUSES VEHICLE TO SPUTTER AND LOSES POWER MAKING VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE ENGINE CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000. I HAVE A 2000 TUNDRA ACCESS CAB TRUCK WITH 62,000 MILES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON SO I HAD IT DIAGNOSED. THE FRONT O2 SENSOR BEFORE THE CAT HAS FAILED. I WROTE TOYOTA AND THEY SAID THAT THEY HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 7 YRS OR 90,000 MILES. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS ALSO UP TO THE LOCAL DEALER TO DECIDE IF THE FAULT WOULD BE COVERED. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM A RELATIVE, WHO IS NOW DECEASED, AND DID NOT RECEIVE ANY RECALL INFO. I WROTE TO TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD ME TO TALK TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHP. I TALKED TO THE LOCAL DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME TO WRITE OR CALL THE TOYOTA EXPERIENCE DEPARTMENT, OR WHAT EVER IT IS. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE GETTING RIPPED OFF FOR A DEFECT IN FACTORY PROVIDED PARTS AND REPLACEMENT PARTS. I DEFINATELY THINK THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY TOYOTA. I FOR ONE CAN NOT AFFORD TO OWN A VEHICLE THAT IS GOING TO COST $200.00 TO $800.00 EVERY 6 MONTHS TO 2 YEARS. THIS ALSO AFFECTS THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE FACT THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS TO BE SMOGGED EVERY 2 YEARS.
BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT EXHAUST MANIFOLDS ARE CRACKED AND LEAK EXHAUST GASES INTO PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. RIGHT EXHAUST MANIFOLD HAS BEEN REPLACED. BECAUSE OF COST, LEFT EXHAUST MANIFOLD HAS YET TO BE REPLACED. *TR
CRACKED EXHAUST MANIFOLDS, HAVE HEARD THE NOISE FOR QUITE SOME TIME. IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE BUT GOES AWAY WHEN THE TRUCK WARMS UP. *TR
I HAVE AN OXYGEN SENSOR FAILURE. DON'T KNOW IF IT'S ONE OR BOTH ON THE RIGHT SIDE. WILL COST WELL OVER $400 TO FIX. HAVE HEARD OF SEVERAL OTHER HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. *TR
3 PAIRS OF CRACKED EXHAUST MANIFOLDS IN LESS THAN 100K MILES. HAD I BEEN MORE VIGILANT ABOUT REPAIRING THEM AS SOON AS THEY OCCURRED, IT LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER COUPLE OF PAIRS. DEALER REPLACED THEM UP TO 100K, AND ALTHOUGH I PRESSED THEM FOR A SOLUTION, THEY WOULD NOT HONOR PROBLEM AFTER 100K MILES. *TR

I HAVE HAD ONE OXYGEN SENSOR REPLACED WITHIN THE PAST YEAR AT AN EXPENSE OF OVER $400. I NOW HAVE ANOTHER OXYGEN SENSOR FAILURE AND NOTE THAT MANY OTHERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME MANUFACTURER DEFECT. MY TRUCK HAS ONLY 52,000 MILES BUT IT IS BEYOND THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PERIOD GRANTED BY TOYOTA. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL ALL 2000 TUNDRAS AND FIX THEM RATHER THAN EXTEND A WARRANTY. *TR
EXHAUST MANIFOLD FAILURE; CRACKS IN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD CAUSING FORCED EXHAUST EMISSIONS INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE CARBON EMISSIONS COATING THE INTERIOR OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND THUS CAN POTENTIALLY CAUSE FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHICH CAN RESULT IN DEATH; ALSO EXHAUST FUMES CAN MAKE THEIR WAY INTO THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE AND THUS CAUSE THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS AND RESULT IN ACCIDENTS AND POTENTIAL DEATH. THIS IS THE 3RD FAILURE SO FAR. *JB
MY 2000 TUNDRA TRD 4X4 V-8, AUTO TRANS DEVELOPED AN ENGINE NOISE WITHIN THE FIRST 10,000 MILES AND FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, GODFREY TOYOTA OF CADILLAC, MI AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. AT APPROXIMATELY 78,000 MILES, THE O2 SENSOR FAILED, AS IDENTIFIED TO ME BY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPLACED MY SENSOR, AND INITIALLY BILLED ME FOR THE WORK. WHEN I ASKED THE MECHANIC, HE IDENTIFIED THE OCCURRENCE OF AN EXTENDED SERVICE BULLETIN ON THE O2 SENSOR. HE FURTHER IDENTIFIED THE REASON FOR THE NOISE WAS THE CRACKED MANIFOLD, THAT HAD APPARENTLY OCCURRED WITHIN THE FIRST 10,000 MILES OF DRIVING. HE INDICATED THE NOISE WAS WORSE WHEN THE ENGINE WAS COLD AND THAT AFTER DRIVING AWHILE, THE CRACKED TENDED TO CLOSE UP AND REDUCE THE NOISE. HE FURTHER INDICATED THAT IF THE O2 SENSOR HAD NOT COME OUT, THAT TOYOTA WOULD HAVE REPLACED THE MANIFOLD AND SENSOR AT THE SAME TIME, AT NO CHARGE. MY CHIEF CONCERN WITH THE CRACKED MANIFOLD IS THE POSSIBLE REDUCTION IN LIFE OF THE ENGINE DUE TO EXHAUST LEAKAGE, SECONDARILY TO VEHICLE OCCUPANTS DURING ANY EXTENDED IDLING, SOMETHING I PERSONALLY DO NOT OFTEN DO. *NM
THE HEADERS NEAR THE ENGINE HAVE LITTLE HOLES IN THEM ALLOWING THERE TO BE AN EXHAUST LEAK AND A LOUD NOISE. *NM
EXHAUST MANIFOLD ARE CRACKED. THIS IS A VERY WELL KNOW ISSUE WITH THESE MANIFOLDS AND TOYOTA HAS NOT STEPPED UP AND TAKEN OWNERSHIP OF THIS PROBLEM. EXHAUST GASES LEAK INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHICH COULD ENTER THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AND CREATE A SERIOUS RISK TO HEALTH. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AT 20,000 MILES WHILE APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR AT VARIOUS SPEEDS THERE WAS A SPEWING NOISE AND THE ODOR OF FUEL COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHICH DETERMINED THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ALTHOUGH, THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SENSORS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WERE REPLACED THREE TIMES THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD HAD NEVER BEEN REPLACED. THE ODOR BECAME WORSE AND NOW IS CAUSING DIZZINESS AND HEADACHES TO THE OCCUPANTS. UPDATED 7/3/2006 - *NM
"TICKING" SOUND FROM LEFT REAR OF ENGINE BLOCK. I KNOW IT WAS AN EXHAUST LEAK. WENT TO TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID MY EXHAUST HEADER WAS CRACKED AND RUSTED. THE TRUCK WAS BOUGHT NEW IN TEXAS. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE MANAGER NAMED GABE AT CAMELBACK TOYOTA IN PHOENIX, AZ, "THE HUMIDITY IN DALLAS MUST HAVE CAUSED THE RUSTING." THE TRUCK HAS 79,000 MILES ON IT WITH NO RUST ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE VEHICLE. WHEN I INQUIRED TO THE PRICE OF REPAIRS, HE SAID $1800. HOWEVER, HE ADDED, I COULD GET THE "IMPROVED" MANIFOLD, "WHICH HAS THICKER WELDS, FOR ONLY TEN DOLLARS MORE." THIS SEEMED EVERY ODD TO ME THAT TOYOTA ALREADY HAS AN IMPROVED DESIGN FOR THE HEADER THAT RUSTS FROM THE "HIGH HUMIDITY" OF TEXAS. *JB
MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAS DEVELOPED A CRACK IN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THIS IS NOT A NORMAL DEFECT SO I DID SOME RESEARCH. APPARENTLY, THERE IS A TSB FOR THE O2 SENSORS AND THEN SOMETIMES IN CHANGING THESE THE DEALERSHIP ALSO HAS TO REPLACE THE MANIFOLD BECAUSE THE THREADS STRIP. MAYBE TOYOTA IS JUST TRYING TO HIDE THE PROBLEM WITH THE MANIFOLD. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH TUNDRA'S AND I FEEL THAT THERE SHOULD ALSO BE A TSB ON THE MANIFOLD. THIS TYPE OF DEFECT IS NOT NORMAL ON VEHICLES OF ANY AGE AND IT IS VERY WIDESPREAD AMONG THE TUNDRAS. *NM
68800 MI. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. DEALER SAID EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND GASKET WERE LEAKING. IT AND BOTH O2 SENSORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ONE O2 SENSOR HAD BEEN REPLACED LESS THAN 12 MONTHS BEFORE - NOW BOTH!. TECHNICIAN SAID THEY'D FIXED 5 OR 6 EXACT SAME PROBLEMS WITHIN THE LAST MONTH - AT ONE DEALERSHIP!. ANOTHER WEB SITE INDICATES OTHERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I SMELL MFGR DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE COVERED 100% AS IT'S EMISSIONS ORIENTED AND BECAUSE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE WIDE SPREAD. IT'S POSSIBLE TO DESIGN AND BUILD A MANIFOLD THAT DOESN'T LEAK OR WARP. TOYOTA SHOULD OWN UP AND FIX AT THEIR EXPENSE. UNCONSCIONABLE IF THEY DON'T, AND NEED NHTSA TO MAKE THEM. *JB

PREMATURE EXHAUST MANIFOLD FAILURE, CAUSING EXHAUST GASSES IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND POSSIBITY OF ENTERING PASSENGER CABIN. THIS WOULD EVENTUALLY RESULT IN DRIVABILITY PROBLEMS. INTERNET SEARCH UNCOVERED LARGE AMOUNT OF SIMILAR PREMATURE FAILURES AND AFFECTS TO RELIABILITY RATINGS. *AK
I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY MY TOYOTA REPAIR FACILITY THAT MY 2000 TUNDRA IS IN NEED OF NEW EXHAUST MANIFOLDS. THE TRUCK CURRENTLY HAS 54,000 MILES ON IT. THE REPAIR WILL COST $1900.00 IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE MANIFOLDS ON THESE TRUCKS ARE FAILING AT A GREATER RATE THAN TOYOTA WILL ADMIT TO. A VEHICLE WITH 54,000 MILES SHOULD NOT NEED THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS REPLACED. TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM, AND CORRECT THE FAULTY PARTS, WITHOUT CHARGE TO THE CUSTOMER.*AK
IN SEPT OF 2003, I HAD TO HAVE ONE OF MY 02 SENSORS REPLACED ON MY 2000 TUNDRA WITH 42,000 MILES ON IT. LESS THEN FOUR MONTHS LATER I AM HAVING ANOTHER 02 SENSOR REPLACED AT 48,000 MILES. ONE OF MY CO-WORKERS HAS A 2000 TUNDRA ALSO AND HAS TWO 02 SENSORS REPLACED. I FEEL THAT IT IS MORE THAN APPARENT THAT THERE IS A QUALITY ISSUE WITH THESE SENSORS AND TOYOTA SHOULD RE-CALL AND REPLACE THE LOT OF THEM. *AK
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. AFTER 2 ATTEMPTS FROM MECHANIC AND FAILURE, LAKESIDE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA SAYS OIL SLUDGE BUILDUP DUE TO NEGLECT. WE HAVE MECHANIC RECORDS/RECEIPTS THAT OIL WAS CHANGED TIMELY.
BRAKE PROBLEMS ON 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA.*MR SINCE FILING HIS COMPLAINT LAST YEAR, CONSUMER DISCOVERED HIS 02 SENSOR RELAY MALFUNCTIONED AND THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WAS CRACKED. THE SENSOR WAS BURNED AND ALMOST CAUSED A FIRE. CONSUMER INQUIRED WHETHER THESE FAILURES HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED AND WHAT'S THE POSSIBILITY OF A RECALL. *PH
2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA SR5 4WD REPEATED FAILURES OF O2 SENSORS, HAVE TWO SENSORS FAIL WITHIN 30,000 MILES TOTAL ON THE TRUCK. EXPENSIVE REPAIRS. ON JAN 13 2004, TOYOTA REPAIR STATED IT COULD COST $800 TO REPAIR O2 SENSOR IN EXHAUST MANIFOLD BECAUSE "AROUND HALF" OF THEM WON'T COME OUT AND THE ENTIRE MANIFOLD MUST BE REPLACED. I KNOW TWO PEOPLE PERSONALLY WITH THE SAME EXACT FAILURES ON THIS YEAR TRUCK.
