My vehicle was parked inside my garage and turned off when the rear back window (rear windshield) suddenly shattered without warning. There was no impact, accident, or object involved. The glass was factory-installed with no prior damage. This spontaneous failure is a safety concern and may indicate a manufacturing or design defect because I looked it up and there are other cases of the same situation on videos.
Rear window shattered when driver door was closed. There is a class action lawsuit for this. 2022-024.
Vehicle is an Acura RDX (model year 2019), with approximately 94000 miles at the time of incident. There was no impact, no vandalism, no accident, and no extreme weather conditions at the time. The glass shattered on its own. This appears to be a known defect affecting Acura RDX vehicles from model years 2019–2023, as documented by multiple consumer reports of spontaneous rear windshield failure. I brought the vehicle to the selling dealership (Pohanka Acura, Chantilly, VA), where I was informed Acura would not cover the repair solely because the vehicle exceeded 50,000 miles. No inspection for defect or goodwill repair was offered, despite the nature of the failure. This defect presents a significant safety concern, as spontaneous glass shattering can cause injury from flying glass shards and poses a risk to occupants and bystanders. Acura has not issued a recall or corrective action for this issue.
Rear window shattered spontaneously without impact. This is a know issue with Acuras and they refuse to issue a recall or support for cars out of warranty.
The rear windshield shattered on my 2019 acura rdx while parked in the garage, not sure how it happened or if its a defect
the back window shattered by itself
I discovered the rear lift gate glass of my vehicle to be shattered while parked inside of my garage. There was no known external contact that impacted the glass. There is glass remaining inside of the door itself after the glass was replaced by Acura. This is an issue that is widespread on this model vehicle.
The rear windshield spontaneously cracked. There was nothing wrong with the vehicle and no physical damage was done. The car was started with remote start and the rear windshield defroster turned out. After approaching the vehicle and opening the trunk, pieces of the window began to fall as it was shattered. Small vibrations made the window continue to crumble until nothing was left in the back. This has been reported to Acura who will not cover the issue even though there is a service Bulletin 22-014 stating there is a defect. Acura has stated the vehicle is not covered even though the issue is for all VINs.
Rear windshield shattered with no sign of impact. This is a known problem with this model. Luckily the window had tint so it is holding the glass together from falling into the vehicle. Vehicle was parked and unoccupied at time of this incident.
Was driving vehicle to work in normal weather conditions with all windows closed. Rear windshield glass shattered.
Rear windshield of 2019 Acura RDX shattered while driving approximately 35 mph and the rear defroster was on. Nothing hit my car. It was extremely loud and startling. Luckily, I was on a surface street driving fairly slowly and nobody was next to me when I quickly exited the lane. Lucky no one was hurt. Despite there being a service bulletin, Acura refused to assist in the repair.
2nd time rear window shattered for no reason 1/27/26 1st time 11/7/2023 Fortunately no one is car when happened PARKED CAR
Rear window shattered in the morning when closing front passenger door. Car was parked in driveway. Was not running. Had been parked since previous afternoon in the same spot. Very large hole in center of rear window, all surrounding glass shattered.
My rear window suddenly and completely shattered without any contact to the window. This was a safety issue do the breaking of glass and not being able to drive safely after it broke.
We have now have 2 incidents where the rear hatch glass has imploded without warning or any previous cracks. The first incident was on 12/08/2023. My wife was getting into the car and the rear hatch glass imploded. We had to replaced by our insurance and Safelite. On January 8th 2025 my wife was leaving work and came out to the car. She got in and heard a crack from the back. She went out to the back of the car and notice the glass has cracked all over. Open opening the hatch the entire glass imploded in. Upon filing the second claim the Safelite tech stated this was a common theme in this make and model. Both incidents occurred while the car was warming up.
Rear window shattered with no impact marking first time. Second time was shattered in two separate areas with glass shards outside of the car.
Rear back window shattered without any impact from debris or objects.
This is the 2nd time the back window shattered, Lucky my insurance covers it.. but say this it still happen would it be a third time next? 1st time it shattered was on January 18, 2023. 2nd time it shattered it was on December 18 2025. Imagine driving on the highway and you here your back window pop and the glass come flying in? sounds dangerous! lucky it was parked when that happen as i got into my car. I did reported the 1st time to a dealership but not help at all. No one have inspected the vehicle only my insurance knows about the broken back window.
Rear hatch glass just shattered on its own while parked in garage overnight.
Back window of 2019 Acura rdx just blew up. Sat in garage from mid day Wednesday and Sunday November 16th of November 2025, it just blew up.
Today 11/18/25 I entered my car, closed driver door when back window shattered. This is the second time this has happened. I did not report the first time but after reading up on this I realized this is a recurring problem with Acura RDX.
On February 7, 2024 I called insurance and filed a claim for my vehicle that was sitting in my driveway at the time of the incident. Upon getting in my car, the rear windshield, which had no chips, breaks, lights, etc. imploded into my vehicle. They stated they believed this happened due to the defroster. It was repaired using insurance at a certified local glass repair shop. Today, 11/14/25 I was making a turn from a stopped position and yet again the rear window imploded into my vehicle. The rear window had no issues at the time of implosion and is parked safely inside a garage to prevent weather effects. This is a VERY clear safety issue as I have a car seat in my back seat that are all rear facing and the window has now imploded TWICE. Acura acknowledged this, and as provided so hasn't the NHSTA. But the safety concern is refusing to be fixed and I cannot continue to have a vehicle that the rear glass implodes within two years causing potential harm to children, and back seat passengers.
Upon exiting my car, I heard a loud crashing sound. The rear windshield had completely shattered upon closing the driver side door and glass was everywhere. Had my rear windshield decided to spontaneously implode 5 minutes earlier while driving on the interstate, I most likely would have had a bad car accident. Acura has a service bulletin out regarding this, as it’s a known issue. They refuse to cover cost or do a recall on this known safety issue. Someone is going to get killed when their back windshield blows out driving and they think they’ve been shot. Absolutely terrible and irresponsible on Acura/Honda’s part.
The back window burst randomly with no pressure. There are thousands of complaints in the facebook groups. The car was parked when this happened in
