I was driving and came to a stop and noticed smoke and an odd smell coming from under the hood. The heater control valve and the wire connector started to smolder and melt the plastic. If it wasn’t for me disconnecting the connector wire to the heater control valve, it would have definitely would have caught on fire.There was no warning other than the smoke and smell coming from the car. I am in the process of the car getting inspected from a bmw service center
Headlight internal wiring insulation completely degraded, exposing wires and causing electrical shorts/arcing. Unchecked this will certainly cause a fire.
INSULATION ON WIRING INSIDE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY HAS FALLEN OFF EXPOSING BARE WIRES. THIS WAS DISCOVERED WHEN REPLACING BULBS. DISCUSSION BOARDS ON WEB HAVE MANY OWNERS REPORTING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. BMW DOES NOT
THE WIRING HARNESSES IN THE TAILGATE HAVE BEEN BOTH SEVERED AND OTHERWISE DAMAGED BY THE NORMAL OPERATION OF THE TAILGATE AND LIFTGLASS. THE HINGES AND WIRING TRAYS HAVE SHARP EDGES AND THE WIRE INSULATION MATERIAL SEEMS TO BE OF A PVC MATERIAL. IT APPEARS THAT THIS MATERIAL IS VULNERABLE TO FAILURE WITH ONLY REGULAR OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE, HOWEVER, THE SHARP EDGES OF THE HARNESS TRAY IN THE TAILGATE HINGES ACT AS SHEARS THAT HAVE SEVERED THE WIRES. THIS PRESENTS SEVERAL SAFETY ISSUES INCLUDING THE POTENTIAL OF FIRES FROM ELECTRICAL SHORTS, MALFUNCTIONING AND DAMAGE OF CONTROL MODULES DUE TO ELECTRICAL SHORTS, INOPERABLE REAR-DEFOGGER SYSTEM, INOPERABLE KEYFOB REMOTES FOR ENTRY AND LOCKING, LOSS OF RADIO SYSTEM INCLUDING WEATHER BAND FOR SAFETY UPDATES, ETC. THIS APPEARS TO BE NOT ONLY A COMMON PROBLEM, BUT EVERY VEHICLE IN THIS DESIGNATION HAS EITHER SUFFERED FROM THESE PROBLEMS OR IS SUSCEPTIBLE. AS NOTED IN SEVERAL BLOGSITES WHERE OWNERS AND REPAIR SPECIALISTS HAVE COMMENTED, THIS IS AN OBVIOUS DESIGN DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY BOTH NHTSA AND THE MANUFACTURER. CLEARLY A RECALL AND MANUFACTURER-PAID REPAIR SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED.
MY CAR CAUGHT FIRE WHILE PARKED AND NOT RUNNING.
FOR APPROX: 2 WKS. EACH TIME THAT I START MY CAR IN THE MORNING TO PROCEED TO WORK. MY ABS , DSC , CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ,TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION LIGHT , ( SOS PH) , MY RADIO SHUTS OFF & ON I HAVE TO RESET MY CLOCK EACH TIME I RESTART MY CAR THE WINDOW WIPERS COME ON & STAY ON TILL IT GOES OFF BY ITSELF & SONETIMES MY COMPUTER DASHBOARD GOES COMPLETELY BLACK . ON SUNDAY JUL 30, 2017 IT NO LONGER WILL SHIFT. INTO GEAR. I HAD RECIEVED A NOTICE THRU VIA: MAIL ABOUT 2 1/2 MOS. AGO FOR A CIVIL LAWSUIT ON THE 5. SERIES & MY CAR WAS INCL. IN THE. RECALL BUT WASN'T HAVING ANY PROBLEMS @ THE TIME SO I DISCARDED THE FORM IN WHICH I NOW. REGRET. THE TOWING CO. STATED TO ME THIS IS BEEN ONGOING FOR YRS. NOW & THE BMW DEALERSHIP IS WELL AWARE OF. THIS IS THE 3RD COMPLAINT ON THE SAME VEHICLE I HAVE PLACED. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE SHOP FOR THE LAST 8 MONTHS AND THEY HAVE FINALLY DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE, WHERE THE COMPUTER COMPONENTS ARE LOCATED, HAS BEEN RECEIVING WATER LEAKAGE FROM FAULTY PLUGS VIA THE SUNROOF DRAINAGE SYSTEM LEADING TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THUS CAUSING MAJOR MALFUNCTIONS SUCH AS FUEL INJECTORS, STARTERS, BATTERIES, SENSORS, AND INDICATORS THAT MAJOR TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONS HAVE OCCURRED WHEN WHAT IS REALLY WRONG IS THAT ALL THE COMPUTER COMPONENTS ARE DROWNING IN WATER, CORRODED AND RUSTED. THIS IS FAULTY FROM THE BMW FACTORY AND THEY KNOW THE PROBLEM EXISTS AND THEY REFUSE TO RECALL THIS MODEL VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM CAN BE FOUND VIA THE INTERNET FROM MANY CONSUMERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE PLACED A COMPLAINT WITH BMW AND THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING. IN ONE INSTANCE I EXPERIENCED THE CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN AND WOULD NOT DISENGAGE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PRESSED. THE STEERING WHEEL ON/OFF BUTTON WAS THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE ACCELERATION. THIS VEHICLE IS A DANGER TO DRIVE AND IS UNRELIABLE!!
WIRING AND REAR DIVERSITY ANTENNA CAN BECOME WET UNDER REAR HATCH FAIRING. THIS HAS CAUSED THE COMFORT ACCESS TO WORK WITH REDUCED RANGE AND OR NOT WORK AT ALL. WIRING HARNESS ON BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT SIDE HAVE SEVERED CABLES FROM OPENING AND CLOSING REAR WINDOW PORTION OF HATCH.
2008 BMW 528I AUTOMATIC SEDAN WITH 104K MILES... HEAD LIGHT WIRING HARNESS (DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE) INSULATION IS DEGRADING RESULTING IN BULBS MALFUNCTIONING/BURNING OUT REGULARLY/SHORTING OUT/BLOWN FUSES, AND POSSIBLY AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. AN EMPLOYEES AT ONE BMW DEALERSHIP, SAID BMW IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND REFUSES TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE' UNTIL THEY ARE FORCED TO BY THE GOVERNMENT OR A LAWSUIT.
I PURCHASED MY CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED 2008 BMW 535XI SPORTS WAGON FROM CONCORD BMW ON 09.01.2015 WITH 81,759 MILES ON IT. ON DECEMBER 15, 2015 I WAS TRAVELING AT FREEWAY SPEED WHEN THE REAR AIR SPRINGS FULLY COLLAPSED. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO CONCORD BMW'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT VERY SAME DAY TO DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED THE FAILURE. ON DECEMBER 17, 2015 I RECEIVED AN EMAIL REPAIR ESTIMATE FROM BMW CONCORD SERVICE ADVISOR JOEY TIONGSON FOR $24,188.17 (I PURCHASED THE USED VEHICLE FOR $17,400.00).THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT CLOGGED SUNROOF DRAINS ALLOWED WATER TO TRAVEL DOWN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE VEHICLE AND FLOOD ALL THE ELECTRONIC MODULES. TIMING OF THIS INCIDENT IS SUCH THAT MID-DECEMBER 2015 PRODUCED THE FIRST RAINFALL IN OUR AREA DUE TO CALIFORNIA DROUGHT. MY CAR WAS NOT EXPOSED TO ANY SIGNIFICANT WATER PRIOR TO THESE FIRST RAINS. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT AND THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS SOLD TO ME WITH THIS PRE-EXISTING CONDITION OF WHICH I WAS NEVER ADVISED. MY RESEARCH AFTER THIS INCIDENT INDICATES THAT OTHER BMW OWNERS HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS BUT NOT TO THIS MAGNITUDE. BMW HAS ALSO ISSUED SERVICE BULLETINS ADVISING DEALERSHIPS OF THIS PROBLEM.
WIRING OF FRONT HEADLIGHTS FLAKING OFF AND EXPOSING BARE WIRE. THE SHORT OF THE WIRES CAUSED THE PLASTIC OF HOLDING HEADLAMP TO BUBBLE AND MELT AS A CONSEQUENCE.
I DISCOVERED FAILURES OF MULTIPLE WIRES IN THE TAILGATE/REAR WINDOW WIRING HARNESSES. THROUGH RESEARCH ONLINE I HAVE FOUND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE OVER SEVERAL MODEL YEARS - SEARCH FOR BMW E61 TAILGATE WIRING PROBLEMS. THE FAILURES ARE CAUSED BY A POOR DESIGN WHERE THE WIRES ENTERING THE HINGE GUIDES (4) FOR THE GLASS AND TAILGATE ARE REPEATEDLY FLEXED AT A SHARP ANGLE UNTIL THE INSULATION, THEN THE COPPER WIRE BREAKS. SAFETY ISSUES - POSSIBLE ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT LEADING TO FIRES (HIGHEST LOAD IS FOR REAR DEFROSTER); LIGHTING FAILURES (REAR HIGH BRAKE LIGHT, LICENSE PLATE LAMPS AND OTHERS); REDUCED VISIBILITY DUE TO LOSS OF WIPER/WASHER/DEFROSTER; REAR GLASS LATCH OPENING WHILE UNDERWAY, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN LOSS OF CARGO OR INGRESS OF EXHAUST FUMES. THIS IS NOT AN EASILY REPAIRED PROBLEM. IT WOULD BE BEYOND THE CAPABILITIES OF ALL BUT A SKILLED MECHANIC WITH PROPER TOOLS. I DISCOVERED IT WHEN THE REMOTE LOCK/UNLOCK USING THE KEY FOBS FAILED. AS I INVESTIGATED I FOUND THE BROKEN WIRE, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHERS WITH BROKEN INSULATION, SOME WITH BROKEN COPPER STRANDS. *TR
( I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER THIS VEHICLE) WHILE REPLACING A BURNT OUT HEADLIGHT, I NOTICED THAT THE INSULATION IN THE SEALED HEADLIGHT WAS MISSING. WHEN I CHECKED THE OPPOSITE SIDE, I FOUND THE SAME THING, THE INSULATION WAS BROKEN AND MISSING. BEING THAT THIS IS A SEALED HEADLIGHT HOUSING, I AM UNABLE TO REMOVE AND REPAIR THE PROBLEM. BMW PARTS STATED THAT THE WIRING HARNESS IS NOT SOLD FOR THOSE LIGHTS. ONE HAS TO PURCHASE A COMPLETELY NEW HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY AT A AVERAGE COST OF $700.00+. *TR

THIS OTHERWISE FINE AUTOMOBILE SEEMS TO GO THROUGH BATTERIES QUICKLY. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN MAY 2007. SINCE THEN BATTERIES HAVE NEEDED TO BE CHANGED AS FOLLOWS: 2009 2011 2013 AND NOW IN 2015 THE NEW BMW BATTERY INSTALLED IN 2013 IS BADLY DISCHARGED. IN 2011 THE DEALER RAN THIS CAR THROUGH AN EXHAUSTIVE ELECTRICAL ANALYSIS AND FOUND NO PROBLEMS. THEN WHY ARE BATTERIES DYING SO QUICKLY? COUNTING THE ORIGINAL BATTERY I'VE BEEN THROUGH 4 ALREADY AND THE 5TH ONE SEEMS ABOUT TO DIE. BMW TOOK CARE OF THE 1ST TWO REPLACEMENTS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE 3RD AND PENDING 4TH REPLACEMENTS ARE ON MY TAB. SOMETHING APPEARS TO BE FAULTY WITH THE ELECTRICAL CHARGING SYSTEM AND POSSIBLY THE VEHICLE'S SLEEP MODE. BMW SHOULD FIND THE DEFECT AND REPAIR IT AT NO OR NOMINAL CHARGE TO CUSTOMERS LIKE ME WHO BUY CAR BATTERIES MORE OFTEN THAN FLASHLIGHT BATTERIES. THANK YOU. *TR
NEW BATTERY INSTALL CAUSED POWER SURGE DAMAGING ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. *TR
WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON WHILE DRIVING THE CAR. WINDSHIELD WIPERS STARTED GOING ON (WITHOUT BEING TURNED ON). BRAKE AND TAIL LIGHTS FAILED INTERMITTENTLY. GAUGES ALL WENT TO ZERO INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. SUNROOF WOULDN'T CLOSE. DROVE TO DEALER. DIAGNOSED AS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM COMPONENTS SUBMERGED IN REAR OF CAR DUE TO BLOCKED SUNROOF DRAIN. THE SAME ISSUE WAS REPAIRED A YEAR PRIOR. THIS TIME TO LIABILITY ASSUMED BY MANUFACTURER OR DEALER BECAUSE OF "OUTSIDE FORCE" (RAIN). $9,500 REPAIR ESTIMATE. APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM/ FLAW WITH THE MODEL. DEALER DID NOT APPEAR TO DO A CHECK OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM WHILE CAR WAS IN FOR ROUTINE SERVICE A MONTH BEFORE THE INCIDENT. NO LOSS OF STEERING OR ENGINE WHILE DRIVING. *TR
AS I WAS DRIVING HOME ON THE HIGHWAY MY ENGINE OVERHEATED VERY QUICKLY. IT WENT INTO SERIOUS LIMP MODE AND SLOWED DOWN TO UNDER 30MPH IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A WIDE FREEWAY. I LET IT COOL FOR OVER 20 MINUTES, AND IT OVERHEATED WITHIN 1 MINUTE OF TURNING IT BACK ON. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND HE DETERMINED THE WATER PUMP HAD FAILED. I STARTED DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND IT TURNS OUT TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE. I READ MANY MANY COMPLAINTS OF PEOPLE HAVING ELECTRICAL WATER PUMP FAILURES BEFORE 75,000 MILES. WITHOUT A WATER PUMP YOU MUST HAVE THE CAR TOWED AND ITS A VERY EXPENSIVE FIX. BMW/MINI HAVE HAD MANY CARS WITH PROBLEMATIC WATER PUMPS IN THE PAST AND THEY NEVER DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO RESULT IN A RECALL. *TR
I HAVE A 2008 BMW 528I WITH 56,000 MILES WITH A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED WARRANTY (THE FULL FACTORY WARRANTY EXPIRED LESS THAN A YEAR AGO). THE VEHICLE COMPUTER IDENTIFIED 3 FAULTS AND THE ENTIRE REAR PASSENGER TAIL LIGHT CLUSTER IS NON-OPERATIONAL. I ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE THE BULBS AND THE ISSUE WAS NOT RESOLVED. I THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A BMW DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR; I WAS SURPRISED WHEN THE ADVISOR INFORMED ME THE ISSUE IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY (CPO) AND WILL COST $400+ TO REPAIR. THE REAR LIGHTS ARE A CRITICAL SAFETY COMPONENT FOR ANY AUTOMOBILE AND MUST BE OPERATIONAL AT ALL TIMES. I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS REPAIR WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER THE CPO WARRANTY. I CHOSE TO CONTACT BMW AND CHALLENGE THE WARRANTY COVERAGE BASED ON THE COMPONENT CRITICALITY. BMW DID NOT AGREE WITH MY POSITION AND STATED THE REPAIR WILL NOT BE COVERED BY BMW. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE AND TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY I IDENTIFIED THAT A WIRE HAS SHORTED AND MELTED SEVERAL PLASTIC PARTS RELATING TO THE TAIL LIGHT CLUSTER. BOTH THE LIGHT HOUSING AND THE WIRE ADAPTER ARE NO LONGER OPERATIONAL DUE TO THE BURNED AREA. I AM LUCKY THIS ELECTRICAL SHORT DID NOT START A FIRE BECAUSE IT IS LOCATED CLOSE TO THE BATTERY AND GAS PORT. I PERFORMED A QUICK SEARCH ONLINE AND REALIZED SEVERAL OTHER BMW 5-SERIES OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE VERY SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR VEHICLES. *TR

IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO START THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AT THE BATTERY CABLES, WHICH WERE NOT PROPERLY CONNECTED. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V126000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: BATTERY: CABLES). THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 137,300.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 528I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 12V126000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:BATTERY:CABLES). AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIR WERE ON A NATIONAL BACK ORDER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT YET AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 32,000.
OUR 2008 BMW 528I HAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM IN WHICH THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE THE CAPABILITY OF CHARGING THE BATTERY IF THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN SHORT DISTANCES OR MULTIPLE STOPS. THIS CAUSES THE BATTERY TO RUN DOWN AND THE VEHICLE TO BECOME INOPERATIVE. THE VEHICLE WILL STOP AND NOT START. AFTER FOUR (4) TRIPS TO THE DEALER (TRUCKED TWICE) THE DEALER HAS DETERMINED THAT IT IS AN OPERATOR PROBLEM AND THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE PLUGGED INTO AND ELECTRICAL BATTERY CHARGER WHEN NOT IN USE. ADDITIONALLY, THEY INDICATED THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE TAKEN DAILY FOR DRIVES OF MORE THAN 20 MILES TO HOPEFULLY CHARGE THE BATTERY. THE ISSUE HAS US IN FEAR OF THE VEHICLE STALLING IN TRAFFIC AND CREATING A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
VEHICLE IS 2008 528I SEDAN. THE TIRE MONITOR PRESSURE INDICATOR WAS DISPLAYED. I TOOK THE CAR TO A BMW DEALERSHIP TO CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE. THEY SAID THE TIRE PRESSURE WAS OK ON ALL 4 TIRES. HOWEVER, IT CONTINUED TO DISPLAY THE TMP INDICATOR. THEN FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, VARIOUS ALERT INDICATORS WOULD DISPLAY BRIEFLY AND THE DATE AND TIME WERE NOT SET. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DETERMINED FLUID (REFERRED TO BY BMW AS 'AN OUTSIDE INFLUENCE') LEAKED FROM INSIDE THE TRUNK OF VEHICLE INTO THE RDC (COMMUNICATION) MODULE, WHICH IS LOCATED UNDER THE TRUNK. THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED THE SUBMERGED FLUID SHORTED OUT THE MODULE AND MELTED THE HARNESS. THE RDC MODULE AND THE HARNESS WERE REPLACED. THE TRUNK WAS NOT WET SO I DID NOT REALIZE ANYTHING HAD LEAKED NOR WAS I AWARE THERE WERE CRITICAL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS LOCATED DIRECTLY UNDER THE TRUNK, WHICH WERE NOT PROPERLY PROTECTED. TO PLACE THE RDC MODULE IN AN AREA WHERE LIQUIDS CAN PENETRATE (I.E. OPEN DRUNK WHILE RAINING, GROCERIES SPILLING'), IS EXTREMELY POOR VEHICLE DESIGN. SINCE THE PROBLEM WAS A RESULT OF 'AN OUTSIDE INFLUENCE' IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND IT COST ALMOST $1000 TO FIX. *TR
VEHICLE IS 2008 BMW 535XI WAGON. BLOCKED SUNROOF DRAINS MEANT THAT WATER DRAINED INTO THE VEHICLE, GATHERING IN THE TRUNK WHERE THE ELECTRONICS SIT. CAR HAD MULTIPLE ENGINE FAILURES AND WARNINGS OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE, ELECTRICAL FAILURE, SUNROOF ERROR AND TPM FAILURE. CAUSE PER BMW WAS BLOCKAGE OF REAR SUNROOF DRAIN. THIS IS A COMMON FAULT CAUSED BY POOR DESIGN OF THE SUNROOF DRAINS (TOO NARROW AND PRONE TO BLOCKING). A RECALL ON THE SEDAN 5 SERIES MOVES THE ELECTRONICS TO A HIGHER POSITION IN THE VEHICLE TO PREVENT THE ELECTRONICS DAMAGE BUT BMW STATE THERE IS NO SIMILAR MOVE POSSIBLE FOR THE WAGON., ALSO IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM BEFORE IT OCCURS AND BMW HAS NO SUGGESTED SERVICE STEPS T P[REVENT OCCURRENCE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 528I (NA). THE CONTACT STATED THAT A SEALED BOTTLE OF WATER STORED IN THE TRUNK LEAKED. THE LEAK CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL SHORTAGE, WHICH BURNED THE WIRES AND MODULATORS. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,000.
