Chronological view of owner reports
Chevrolet has a well documented issue with the automatic transmission on my car. This is the same model transmission in other cars as well. First issue: the stock transmission fluid was incorrect. This required repairs. The underlying issue is the torque converters and solenoid. Most recently, one solenoid got stuck and forced my car into Limp mode while driving. This caused the vehicle to force 4th gear and incapacitated my ability to control my speed correctly. I was forced to pull off to the side until the computer reset itself again. A less experienced driver could potentially get into a car accident without the ability to properly regulate speed
1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The service technician at the dealership linked the known issue to the torque converter and potentially the transmission system. The suspected faulty components are available for inspection upon request. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? While driving my 2017 Chevrolet Camaro, the vehicle intermittently and abruptly slows down and shakes/shudders violently, as if riding over rocks. This unexpected and dangerous behavior could easily result in a loss of control, especially at higher speeds or in traffic, putting both myself and other drivers at risk. This issue compromises the safe operation of the vehicle. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. The service technician told me this is a known problem with Chevrolets and stated that they currently have four other vehicles in their service department with the same issue. Given the frequency of this issue (as noted by the dealer) and the sudden onset without warning, I am concerned that this is a broader safety-related defect that warrants investigation. The technician stated multiple times that the issue is likely the torque converter, or in the worst case, a failing transmission. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? No, the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer directly, or by police or insurance representatives at this time. I’ve never received any notice from the manufacturer regarding the shudder and recommended fluid flushes. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lights or messages have appeared. The sudden shuddering and slowing down of the vehicle while driving occurs without any prior warning.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated that while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle shuddered and then intermittently lost motive power. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that there were metal shavings inside the transmission and the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 77,800.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the vehicle started shaking abnormally and shuddered. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a delay in the transmission before the transmission shifted hard. Additionally, while driving at slow speeds, the vehicle hesitated to go into 1st and 2nd gears. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
Transmission is shuddering. Can try to accelerate and it lurches until it finally catches gear and goes. Definitely a concern when at a stop and pulling into traffic
Transmission in the 2016 and up 6 speed manual will pop out of second gear and making horrible grinding noises upon engaging and releasing clutch. I know several people who have had this issue and they told me GM is aware of the issue but ignoring it but it is a safety issue because it leaves a person in neutral in traffic when shifting to second it will go in and pop out. It is defective transmission housing in these expensive cars and mines has been doing it since I have had it and it is definitely the defective transmission housing and there is even a YouTube video on it. This needs to be addressed before Gm gets sued for this. Pandemic has made it even harder to get dealership to get stuff done because personally my car sat at Butler Chevrolet in Macon two months and they still never touched it and told us to come get my vehicle because they had no one to work on it and they had us in a loaner car with improper tags and registration issues and we reported that to local authorities and we are planning to sue them also if they don't settle for the discrimination and hard time they gave us letting my car sit months for no reason just to tell me they had no qualified technician to work on it and they had got my car full of ants and insects. We need this recalled so that anyone with these dangerous transmissions will get it repaired. Don't do your customers like this we are well aware of what's happening here. We pay good money for these cars. Recall these things before it leads to bigger class action issues and I'm a car truck guy and very mechanically inclined and have many friends who have these cars in manual and some of them have had transmission replacement due to defective housing and that solved the issue.
2017 Camaro transmission shutter not shifting right sometimes hard to stop
Within a month or so after purchasing this vehicle with less that 20 miles the transmission would studder. I informed the dealership several times. I was told this was a known issue and it was just related to transmission fluid type. I brought the car in for a transmission flush and the problem seemed to go away. It has returned and is causing safety risk. Besides the annoying grinding noise, I have experienced safety related issues concerning this issue. At the moment you need to accelerate the car pausing and slips gears. This has put me at risk on many occasion since owning the vehicle. When needing merge or get over into traffic this has been very dangerous. GM has made no attempt to permanently fix the issue.
8 speed transmission shudders while cruising on the highway , very hard shift between gears 1and2 at low parking lot speeds. Down shifting at times takes a while forcing you to manually downshift with the paddle shifters
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the gear shifter was rough while shifting gears. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a defective transmission. The dealer informed the contact that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000. The VIN was unavailable.
There is a shudder in the transmission that causes a hesitation in acceleration and or a shudder that I feel is unsafe. Looking online there are a lot of people having this issue
Synchronizer problem shifting into 2nd gear. The car on occasion (hot or cold) has trouble shifting completely into 2nd gear. Happens under normal every day driving conditions or while trying to accelerate hard and shift into 2nd. Car feels like it went into gear, but when you release the clutch it grinds the teeth on the synchros due to not being fully in 2nd gear.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the front passenger’s side tire would shake. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The contact had all the tires replaced and the tires rotated; however, the failure persisted. Upon investigation, the contact's husband discovered what was commonly known as the "Chevrolet shake"; which was caused by the 8-speed transmission. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was referred to a dealer. The dealer was unable to diagnose the failure and provided the contact with an estimate to take the transmission apart to determine the cause of the failure. The contact declined the offer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.
I began slowing down for a traffic light and experienced what felt like a car hitting me from behind. The problem is, "no one was behind me". A few days later I began noticing a distinctive shutter between 40 -70 Mph. under my seat, " It felt like I was going over rumble strips . I began researching this issue and learned that GM issued a Service Bulletin ( 18-NA-355 ), and the problem is a "known Issue". My question for my Senator is this "why wasn't a recall sent out"? Apparently a major car makers can get away with designing, building, and marketing a product with know problems which could lead to more serious issue. Since the issue deals with the power train, transmission safety, and the safety of the drivers , "How was GM permitted to simply issue a service bulletin? I followed the instructions and the dealership did not want to complete the work, "I had to write to GM and ask them to mandate the service on my vehicle. After the service my vehicle ran ok for a while, "but now I have strange shifting, slipping, clinking, and a violent jerk at times. How can the NTSB allow a vehicle with issues on the road? Again, this is a question for my Congressman and Senator.
When driving it started shuttering like it was road problems but it kept on getting worse then it started shifting hard taking off like it is gonna stall in middle of the road or if you take off and know you have plenty of time before the other car gets to you and it hard shifts at that time before you can get it to go to get out of the way the car is upon you braking hard honking it has done that a few times on me it is scary I’m having it fixed today to find out my extended warranty I paid for with the dealer does not cover to fix this the warranty runs out at 60,000miles mine has 64,000 so now it is costing me 452.48 to fix this when there is so many complaints online same thing it should already be a recall not a law suit.
The car starts to shake violently at any speed and it does it all models whether it switches between V4 or V6 or V8 mode. I am taking it into the dealership on 10/01/21. I have found one 106 complaints on your site since Sept 21, 2021. The issue at hand is either a faulty torque converter and transmission. I have also found several hundred reports on the internet. And as of today GM has flushed the transmission only to have the problem happen again. I feel they know they have a costly issue at hand. I am more concerned about the safety factor and my family in the car and it decides to fail at highway speeds. TRANSMISSION STUTTERS AND CAR SHAKES WHILE SHIFTING AND DRIVING BETWEEN 30-80 MPH. HARD SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE.
TRANSMISSION SLIPS AT APPROXIMATELY 1500-1800 RPM WHILE IN MOTION ON HIGHWAY CAUSING SEVERE VIBRATION OF VEHICLE. TRANSMISSION WON'T HOLD A GEAR AND WON'T AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT TO PREVENT VIBRATION. VEHICLE SEEMS TO 'LUG' AT THESE RPM'S.
SHUTTERING AT LOW SPEEDS COMING TO A STOP AND NOW HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE REVERSE ONCE IN REVERSE IT DOESN'T WANT TO SHIFT OUT OF IT FIGHTS YOU BIG TIME AND HAVE TO PLAY WITH IT TO GET IT BACK TO FIRST ALL OTHER FORWARD FUNCTIONS SEEM TO BE FINE AT THIS TIME THIS IS A 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. *TR
HELLO! I WANT TO REPORT GM ON THE INFAMOUS 8L45 TRANSMISSION SHUDDER. I HAVE HAD THE FLUID CHANGED IN 2018, THE TORQUE CONVERTER CHANGED IN 2018, AND THE FLUID FLUSHED WITH THE NA-18-355 BULLETIN BACK LAST YEAR. ALTHOUGH THE SHUDDER HASN'T RETURNED. I DON'T TRUST THAT THIS TRANSMISSION SHOWS QUALITY. I WORRY THAT THIS WILL LAST UNTIL OUR WARRANTIES ARE UP AND WE'RE ON OUR OWN. THIS NOT ACCEPTABLE. THIS IS A WEAK POINT OF THIS AMAZING CAR. I HAD ROUGH SHIFTING AND I'VE HAD SHIFTS THAT BUCKED. THIS IS NOT SAFE. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL OR GM SHOULD GIVE EVERYONE A LONGER WARRANTY ON THESE TRANSMISSIONS.
HAD A TORQUE CONVERTER SHUDDER WHICH WAS FIXED BY UPDATING TO NEW GM FLUIDS. AFTER THIS SERVICE, AROUND 1000 MILES LATER I STARTED EXPERIENCING HARD SHIFTS FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR. TOOK IT INTO SERVICE WHERE THEY CHANGED A VALVE BODY. THIS GOT RID OF MY HARD SHIFTS FOR ABOUT 1500 MILES, THEN IT CAME BACK EVEN WORSE. THESE PROBLEMS OCCUR WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION(USUALLY UNDER SLOW ACCELERATION).
WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING ON EITHER STREET OR HIGHWAY, THE TRANSMISSION VIBRATES WHEN SLOWLY ACCELERATING AND THE RPM'S ARE AROUND 1500.
TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING ENGINE SURGING BETWEEN 35 AN 60 MPH.
