THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT 10 MPH, TO MERGE INTO ANOTHER INTERSTATE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED AND THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO HIT A POLE. THE WINDSHIELD CRACKED AND THE HOOD WAS DAMAGED FROM THE CRASH. A STATE TROOPER ASSISTED THE CONTACT TO REPLACE THE TIRE WITH A SPARE TIRE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO HIS RESIDENCE. AN UNKNOWN DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT HE WOULD NEED TO PAY FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE TOWED TO THEIR DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT BACK TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE. HOWEVER, NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE HAD BEEN PROVIDED FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 194,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 10-15 MPH AND MAKING A LEFT TURN, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL POPPING NOISE AND THE STEERING WHEEL WENT IN A CIRCLE AS THE CAR VEERED OF THE ROAD. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE STEERING AND ENGINE DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED.THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,015.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 12 MPH, THE POWER STEERING SEIZED WHILE MAKING A TURN. ALSO, THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AS THE ENGINE STALLED AND IMMEDIATELY RESTARTED. THE FAILURE HAD OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. DRIVING TO WORK APPROX 06:30 AM. POWER STEERING WENT OUT, MANAGED TO TURN THE CAR TOWARDS DITCH TO AVOID ONCOMING VEHICLES. APPROX 45 MPH, TWO LANE FRONTAGE ROAD. THE CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN RATHER WEAVY ON THE HIGHWAY. THE DEALER COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG UNTIL THE RECALL FOR STEERING LINKAGE WAS POINTED OUT. 2005 IMPALA POPPING SOUND MADE IN STEERING WHEEL WHEN TURNING VEHICLE. AFTER CONSULTING WITH MECHANIC HE STATED IT COULD BE A PROBLEM THAT COULD CAUSE MY STEERING TO FAIL WHILE DRIVING. AFTER PERFORMING RESEARCH ONLINE IT APPEARS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE INITIAL DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE'S STEERING LUBRICATION SYSTEM. STARTED TO NOTICE "RUMBLING" AND CLICKING NOISES AS WELL AS VIBRATIONS IN THE STEERING WHEEL AS I MADE SLOW TURNS. CALLED THE LOCAL CHEVROLET SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND HE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG FROM MY DESCRIPTION. HE SAYS IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE "UPPER INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT" ON SEVERAL CHEVY PRODUCTS, INCLUDING MY 2005 CHEVY IMPALA WITH 50,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS SO COMMON THE REPAIR PART IS ON NATIONAL BACKORDER. I AM GOING TO GET A REPAIR BILL OF AROUND $240. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE A NATIONAL RECALL DUE TO THE "KNOWN" ISSUE BY CHEVY. IT IS NOT RIGHT NOW DUE TO THE FACT IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE, YET. I UNDERSTAND PARTS GOING BAD AND DO NOT EXPECT THE MANUFACTURER TO GUARANTEE NOTHING WILL EVER HAPPEN. BUT, WHEN THERE IS A KNOW DEFECT, WHY SHOULD I LEFT HOLDING THE $240 BILL??? THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD HAVE THIS AS A RECALL AND SHOULD REIMBURSE CUSTOMERS ACCORDINGLY. *TR

HE ALSO FELT A VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (01-02-32001H) REGARDING THIS SAME FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE CONTACT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 37,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000.

THERE WAS A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE WHENEVER I MADE A HARD TURN IN MY CAR - BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT, AS WELL AS A FEELING THAT THE STEERING COLUMN WAS LOOSE. ALSO, THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE WOULD MOVE BY TOUCH. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE STEERING COLUMN WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE NEW TIE RODS BECAUSE THEY WERE LOOSE. I WAS ALSO TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE IMPALA. WHY HAS A RECALL NOT BE INSTITUTED IF THE DEALER IS REPAIRING MORE THAN ONE INSTANCE OF THIS PROBLEM PER WEEK? *TR
