THESE 3 CASES OF AN ABS FAILURE OCCURRED ON DAMP ROADS. TWO CASES INVOLVED THE RIGHT FRONT TIRES BEING OVER LEAVES ON THE ROAD WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED. ALL THE CASES INVOLVED TRYING TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN. NORMAL PRESSURE(NOT A PANIC STOP) WAS APPLIED TOBRAKES, AND ALL 3 CASES WERE AT A SPEED OF 5MPH OR LESS. WHEN THE ABS SYSTEM KICKED IN, THE CAR BASICALLY WOULD NOT STOP WITHIN ANY REASONABLE DISTANCE. WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS ABS SYSTEM(KELSEY-HAYES) EVER SINCE WE PURCHASED VEHICLE IN 1994. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THIS SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK!!!! IF THE ABS EVER KICKS IN, YOU ARE IN TROUBLE. WE HAVE HAD ONLY 1 ACCIDENT SINCE 1994(CAUSED BY THE ABS), BUT HAVE HAD NUMEROUS NEAR-MISSES. I HAVE EVEN LOOKED INTO DISCONNECTING THE ABS, BUT THERE IS SIOME INTERLOCKING OF THE ABS TO THE TRANSMISSION OR OTHER SYSTEMS THAT PREVENT YOU FROM DOING THAT. I HAVE TALKED TO THE DEALERS, MANUFATURER, AND THE NTHSA. THE DEALERS AND THE MANUFACTURERS ARE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE IT WOULD INVOLVE REPLACING THE WHOLE KELSEY-HAYES SYSTEM NOT JUST A MODIFICATION.*AK

IN DRY ROAD CONDITIONS ON I-5 NORTHBOUND WE NOTICED THAT TRAFFIC WAS STOPPING AHEAD OF US AND APPLIED BRAKES. WE HAD ALREADY SLOWED TO APPROX 50MPH BEFORE BRAKING . THE VEHICLE NOSE DIPPED AS WE SLOWED TO STOP, THEN THE ANTI LOCK MECH RELEASED THE BASE BRAKES AND WE WERE THROWN UPRIGHT AS WE CONTINUED FORWARD INTO THE CAR AHEAD OF US AFTER A CONSIDERABLE DISTANCE DURING WHICH TIME WE WERE AWARE THAT WE WERE NOT BEING SLOWED BY THE ANTI- LOCK SYSTEM. WE HAD NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES HAD AN UNUSUAL STOPPING DISTANCE IN THE PAST, BUT BELIEVED THAT THIS WAS NORMAL AS WE WERE TOLD BY OUR DEALER. THE BRAKES HAD RECENTLY BEEN SERVICED IN DECEMBER. THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT WE SHOULD HAVE HAD AMPLE DISTANCE FOR ANY PROPERLY WORKING BRAKE SYSTEM TO STOP US IN TIME. *AK

THE TRUCK HAS POOR BRAKING ABILITY, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO STOP WHEN NEEDED. ONE ACCIDENT HAS RESULTED AS DESCRIBED, IN 3/1999. MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS AND SERVICE ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN DONE WITH NO RESULT. MULTIPLE COMPONENTS HAVE BEEN CHANGED AT MY EXPENSE, WITH NO CHANGE. THE DEALER (JOE HOLLAND IN CHARLESTON, WV) STATES THE BRAKES ARE FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED. THE TRUCK IS VERY DIFFICULT TO STOP IN SITUATIONS WHERE A QUICK STOP IS NEEDED. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN CHRONIC SINCE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED. IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN. MANY CLOSE CALLS HAVE HAPPENED. POOR BRAKE PERFORMANCE.*AK

ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES HAVE NOT ALLOWED THE VEHICLE TO STOP. THE LAST OCCASION RESULTED IN A REAR END COLLISION ALTHOUGH THERE WAS PLENTY OF ROOM TO STOP IF THE BRAKES HAD WORKED PROPERLY. THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER IS OF NO HELP BECAUSE THE BRAKES FAIL SPORADICALLY AND THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THE COMPUTER TEST SHOWS NO DEFECT. I HAVE CONTACTED GM TO COMPLAIN AND THEY HAVE AN OPEN FILE ON THIS (NO. 990468281) BUT HAVE NOT OFFERED ANY ASSISTANCE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION WHICH THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER ARE IGNORING. THE ANTI LOCK SYSTEM ON THIS VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. *AK

ABS BRAKE SYSTEM HAS ACTIVATED AND CREATED A DANGEROUS SKID ON AT LEAST 6 OCCASIONS. I AM AN EXCELLENT DRIVER AND USED AVOIDANCE MANOVEURS TWICE TO AVOID COLLISIONS. THERE SEEMS TO BE TWO CONSISTENT CONDITIONS THAT CAUSE THE ACTIVATION OF THE ABS /SKIDDING...BUMPY ROADS(I HAVE SKIDDED BOTH ON DRY RAILROAD CROSSINGS AND DRY UNPAVED MOUNTAIN ROADS) AND,SECOND, RAINY PAVED SURFACES THAT WOULD NOT ORDINARILY INDUCE A SKID. WET WHITE PAINTED LINES AT INTERSECTIONS ARE MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS. WHAT I CANT UNDERSTAND IS THAT AS OF 01/04/2000, YOU ALREADY HAVE 463!!! REPORTS ON YOUR WEBSITE OF THIS VEHICLE/YEAR/SYSTEM FAILURE AND YET, NO RECALL. *AK

TRAVELING AT 30MPH THEN HAVING TO MAKE A SUDDEN STOP DUE TO TRAFFIC CONDITIONS, THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED WITH FULL FORCE. A VERY LOUD GROWLING NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP, NOR DID IT APPEAR TO SLOW DOWN. THE RESULT WAS COLLISION DESTROYING THE VEHICLE THAT WAS REAR-ENDED.

AFTER INVESTIGATING THIS DEFECT I AM APPALLED THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AS I NORMALLY DO WHEN APPROACHING A RED LIGHT. THE CAR BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WERE NO BRAKES. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER (THEY DID A TEST AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED WITH THEM, THE VEHICLE NOT STOPPING UNTIL 30-35 FEET AFTER THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED) THAT THE ABS SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY ACCORDING TO GM.
