2 FIRESTONE STEELTEX TIRES P245/75R16 EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION, CONSUMER STATED HE COULD TELL BY THE VEHICLE'S HANDLING THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE TIRES, DOT # V611 B1A. *SLC
WHILE PULLING MY TRAVEL TRAILER AT APROXIMATELY 60MPH. THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE REMAINDER OF THE TIRE. THE TIRE HAD GOOD PRESSURE AND ACTUALLY NEVER BLEW (IT STILL HAS GOOD PRESSURE). THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE GOOD AND I CAN NAME NO CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THE FAILURE. THE TIRE WAS SHOWING NO SEPARATION OF WEAR PROBLEMS PRIOR TO THE TRIP. WE HAD BEEN TRAVELING ABOUT 1 1/2 HOURS. BLOWOUT ON FIRST TIRE OCCURRED AT 65 MPH WITH 4 PEOPLE IN VEHICLE, SIDEWALL BURST. FIRESTONE DEALER ASSERTED THAT SOME CUT MUST HAVE OCAUSED FAILURE. INFLATION PRESSURES REGULARLY CHECKED. TREAD CAME LOOSE FROM TIRE DURING NORMAL OPERATION. TREAD BEATUP THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR AND DAMAGED THE REAR HEATER CORE AND SUPPLY HOSES. IT KNOCKED THE MUFFLER UP AND DAMAGED THE OUTSIDE OF THE BODY. WE HAD TAKEN THE CAR TO A FIRESTONE TIRE COMPANY AND HAD THE TIRES CHECKED AND WAS TOLD THEY HAD NEVER SEEN THESE TIRES HAVE A PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM HAPPEND WITHIN ONE WEEK. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED 50 MILES TO THE DEALERSHIP AND REPAIRS OF OVER $2000.00 HAD TO BE MADE. THERE WER NO INJURIES TO PASSANGERS. PURCHASED VEHICLE IN NOVEMBER 1998, IN EARLY MARCH 1999 THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN DRIVEN ABOUT 4000 MILES. ON INTERSTATE 240, 1 MILE SOUTH OF THE I-40 JUNCTION, THE RIGHT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET OFF OF THE HIGHWAY AND TO A FIRESTONE DEALER AT THE INTERSECTION OF I-40 AND I-240. BEFORE TAKING THE TIRE OFF OF THE VEHICLE, I TOOK PICTURES OF THE REMAINS OF THE TIRE. WE HAD A TIRE BLOWOUT ON A VACATION (7/6/00) ON NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY;SIX CHILDREN AND WIFE WERE IN CAR AT 55 MILES PER HOUR; I WAS ABLE TO SAFETY GET CAR TO SIDE OF ROAD. MY DEALER REPLACED TIRE WITH MATCHING TIRE. IT TURNS OUT ALL TIRES ARE THE RECALLED FIRESTONE TIRES VERIFIED BY A FIRESTONE DEALER. I AM ON A WAITING LIST FOR REPLACEMENTS. I AM UPSET BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN SAME TIRES ON OTHER SUBURBANS AROUND MY AREA AND ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT FORD. A SLOWER REACTION ON MY PART COULD HAVE MEANT MY 6 CHILDREN HURT. THE TIRE BLEW OUT WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. THE ENTIRE SIDE WALL BLEW OUT COMPLETLY. THE POLICE SAID THEY HAD NEVER SEEN SUCH A FAILURE BEFORE. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS IS RELATED TO THE CURRENT FIRESTONE TIRE DEFECTS. THIS VEHICLE IS USED TO TRANSPORT CHILDREN WITH AND THERE WERE 4 OCCUPANTS IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. TIRE LIFE I ALMOST OVER AT LESS THAN 24000 MILES DESSPITE PROPER INFLATION AND ROTATION CCNDDUCTED SINCE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 70MPH ON HIGHWAY AND HIS VEHICLE STARTED TO VIBRATE. HE PULLED OVER, AND LEFT REAR DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE HAD BUBBLES AND STARTED TO SEPARATE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. AT HIGHWAY SPEED VEHICLE DEVELOPED A PRONOUNCED VIBRATION RATHER RAPIDLY WHICH RESULTED IN STOPPING THE VEHICLE AND UPON EXAMINATION OF THE VEHICLE, AN ABNORMALITY WAS OBSERVED IN THE SHAPE OF THE TIRE.
