My shift to park didn’t stop alarming and drained my battery so badly that I was stranded for 4.5hrs and I had to replace it and the alternator!

Type: Vehicle, Vehicle: 2019 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, Manufacturer: General Motors, LLC
Incident: Jun 2025

This vehicle reports a "Shift to Park" error message when parking the car. The gearshift is in the parked position but the sensor if not responding correctly. The alarm continues to buzz and we are unable to turn the car off and exit the vehicle. We must continue to "wiggle" the gear shift and even drive around the block and try to park again to have this message stop. Very afraid that the car is not recognizing the "parked" position and will move even though we think it is parked. We understand that this has been an issue with Chevrolet since 2017 and no recall has been issued. PLEASE help.

When I push the button to turn off vehicle it dings and says shift to park. I cannot stop it from doing it. One day my vehicle did it for 45 minutes. I could not do anything lock my door anything this is a hazard what if I was out of town and someone tried to steal my car because it would not stop doing this. I see on social media this is happening to a lot of 2019 chevy traverse owners.

When shifting into park I get a message on my dash to shift into park and the car will not shutoff. I have to jiggle the shifter knob a few times for it to shutoff again and again. It's a real problem and should have a recall on it.

Has “Shift to Park” issue and will keep electronics on, killing the battery. Other vehicles were recalled but this is an excluded one. Was rear ended enough to get a salvage title but I was told a salvage title doesn’t affect safety recalls. Bought with less than 2k miles and have 22k miles on the vehicle now so there hasn’t been excessive use. Has done it several times now.

When in park, "Shift to Park" continues to alert causing trouble turning off the engine. I've read this is common among the 2019 Traverse and many have been recalled, but my specific VIN has not. Can you help so I can get this fixed?

Dashboard alerts “Shift to Park” after the car is turned off. Car is in park. Contacted dealer and it $480.00 to repair and apparently not covered by the GM Bumper to Bumper extended warranty protection plan. A recall was issued for the same issue on the 2018 traverse but not issued for the 2019. This is ridiculous and GM needs to issue a recall for this issue for the 2019 model.

I shifted to park and turned the engine off. The engine turned off, but began beeping and the message board said SHIFT TO PARK. I started the engine again and shifted in and out of park and turned off engine. The same beeping and the same error message. I tried several times, with the same results. The car would not lock, and the beeping would not stop. I left the car for 20 minutes and then started it again and turned it off. At that time it stopped beeping and there was no error message. I had several errands to run on that day, and each time I got the error message with the beeping, and could not lock the car. This is a safety issue because at each stop I had to leave the car unlocked. I am a [XXX] widow and was traveling alone. Also, I worried that someone could start the car by just pressing the ignition button. I took it to the dealer and waited while it was being repaired. The dealer charged me $41.12 for a part listed at $21.49. They charged me $270.00 for labor for a job taking less than one hour. They also tacked on $20.00 for a "shop cost". General Motors has a repair bulletin #[XXX] for this issue. From the posts on the internet it is a common problem, and should have warranted a recall. Shift into park error comes up on screen when vehicle is put into park.

When I shift the vehicle from "gear" to "park" the electric system does not register that the car is in "park". I receive a message on the dash (Shift Vehicle to Park) when my vehicle is already in "park". If I try to get out of the car with the dash stating to (Shift Vehicle to Park) the horn starts to beep. I have to keep putting the car in and out of gear and eventually it will electronically realize the vehicle is in "park". Sometimes it takes one or two tries for it to turn off and I can exit my vehicle or it has taken me 10 minutes of continuing to put the car in and out of gear. This started a few weeks ago and has slowly gotten worse. My Traverse is currently at Chevrolet to get fixed and I was quoted $692 plus tax to repair the issue. I have googled this issue and found this same problem posted dating back to 2020 yet this still is not a recall 3 years later. When I called/ dropped off my Traverse at Chevrolet they knew exactly what was happening without me fully explaining. This is a known issue that they stated was a transmission emergency and I was offered a same day appointment vs. waiting for a normal appointment for two weeks.

Car died in middle of intersection. Had it towed to repair shop and replaced starter and 350 AMP fuse. Had car back for less than a week and the exact same issue occurred at a stop light. Had it towed to same repair shop and after checking all wiring mechanic found teeth missing on flywheel which broke the brand new starter. Mechanic states entire engine has to be removed in order to replace flywheel.

When I put my 2019 Traverse in park, it gives a shift to park error message, even though it IS in park. I can't shut it off so I put the gear shift in drive and back to park a few times and the message would finally go away and let me shut it off. The problem is constant now. Very frustrating!! Now I'll have to take it to the dealer and hopefully they can fix it and without me having to take it in again to be fixed. And my warrant is expired now (42 months) so I'll have to pay for an expensive electrical fix. I've done some research and a lot of people are having this issue. Why hasn't there been a recall issued yet???

When the car is in Park, it gives a shift to park error, even though it is in Park. It began about a week ago. I use to be able to wiggle the gear shift a bit and it would go away. Now the problem is constant. And you can’t just ignore it as it beeps and the lights stay on draining the battery.

First Issue: 09/28/2019- Robert Chevrolet/Hicksville- Car got shut off on middle of old country road- Car needs to be towed to Nearest Chevy dealer and Generator and battery was replaced-Generator caused battery to fail- There was no rental car given since I was told that service center didn’t belong to me- If I had brought to dealership in Douglaston then I would be able to get a loaner car. Same issue Second time: 2/10/2022 Car got shut off in middle of Northern Blvd. right near service center- My whole car dashboard and signal went blank while taking exist and I was not able to use signals indicator at all- My car got completely shut off in few minutes after shutting off dashboard. I almost got into an accident due to car slowed down and shut off completely in busiest main street. Car drivers behind me started cursing and honking and screaming because I even couldn’t start emergency flashing light. I was able to borrow orange cone from local service guy and put it behind my car since I couldn’t use emergency indicator. I was told $1350 including tax is out of pocket cost (Alternator/Battery)- I was within 3 year leasing period but due to its out of warranty for mileage limit for about over 4000 mileage. GM was involved and took percentage of and I still ended up paying $816. I am asking why within three year my battery and generator will go bad?

Shift to park error on, car is in park however the car is not registering it is in park and won’t let me shut off car… tried several times of putting it in gear and back into park as well as driving it around a few separate times before it would finally register.

My vehicle is not registering whenever it is put into park. The dashboard keeps signaling that it needs to be shifted into park when it already is and refuses to turn the vehicle off because it’s not registering that it did is in park. Upon researching the issue, I found that this is a common problem due to defective parts and once fixed by the dealership people have reported having the same problem within the next few thousand miles. This same issue is happening with different models of gm vehicles as well and I believe due to the widespread and common occurrence of this specific related issue that there needs to be a recall to have the problem resolved. I am unable to even drive my vehicle due to this. I can not turn my vehicle completely off which drains the battery.

Unknown what component is failing. When honking the horn, the radio station changes. It is available upon inspection. When the station changes to another station, at times the new station is a lot louder than the original station. This is distracting and causes the driver to look at the Entertainment Center and away from the road. This puts everyone in the vehicle at risk for an accident. Other drivers or pedestrians are risk for the same reason. The vehicle has been inspected several times by the dealership that sold us the vehicle who said they could not reproduce the error. No warnings appeared before nor as the error happens. This appeared within the first year of ownership.

When I put the car in PARK, turn the vehicle off, with my foot on the brake; the dashboard relentlessly signals to put the vehicle in Park. It will not stop this notice until I stop/start the car a few times or repeatedly press the gear shift lever. It happens intermittently, but at least 3-4 times a week. As a woman, the idea of going shopping and coming out to a dead car battery from this problem is always in the front in my mind and some stranger “helping” me, instead mugs me. I am terrified that it will cause an electrical fire under my carport and burn my house down with us inside. I haven’t had my Premiere long and absolutely love it and I have been a Chevy fan for years, but I have always felt Chevrolet took care of their customers. Is it going to take a terrible loss for these Traverse to be recalled?

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that upon placing the vehicle into PARK, the shift to park warning message would appear on the instrument panel. Due to the failure, the contact had to readjust the gear shifter or restart the vehicle to correct the failure; however, those options do not correct the failure every time. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was given an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed her that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

I kept getting a shift to park error. The dealership diagnosed it as a problem with the gear shift wiring harness. It was a few thousand miles passed warranty so I had to pay about $300 out of pocket for it. It's been less than 2 weeks since it was "fixed" and I am now having the same issue.

"SHIFT TO PARK" MESSAGE APPEARS AFTER PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND TRYING TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF. VEHICLE IS CLEARLY IN PARK, BUT VEHICLE DOES NOT SEEM TO RECOGNIZE IT IS IN PARK. HAPPENS INTERMITTENLY. TO BE ABLE TO TURN OFF THE CAR, I WILL NEED TO PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND THEN BACK TO PARK. SOMETIMES IT FIXES ON THE FIRST TIME, OTHER TIMES I NEED TO DO IT MULTIPLE TIMES.
