BRAKING SYSTEM DEFECTS IN FORD ESCAPE HYBRID 2006. THE BRAKES FAIL, MULTIPLE TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP HAVE NOT RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE. *TR
LETTER FROM SENATOR DENT ON BEHALF OF CONSTITUENT REGARDING A 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID (DOT/I # 2010-2203) *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED A WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED TO SERVICE THE BRAKE SYSTEM. THE CONSUMER STATED IT COST $120 TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY HYDRAULIC COMPUTER MODULE AND THE COST TO REPLACE IT WOULD BE $ 5,000. *JB
CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE CAUSING PROPERTY DAMAGE AND DAMAGE TO CAR. WE HAVE TAKEN OUR VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALERSHIP TWICE IN PAST YEAR TO FIND OUT WHY OUR BRAKES "CATCH" CAUSING A MOMENTARY LOSS OF BRAKING. THEY TOLD US BOTH TIMES THAT THEY COULDN'T FIND ANY PROBLEM AND SENT US OUT WITHOUT AN ANSWER OR FIX. THEN YESTERDAY WHAT WE FEARED FINALLY HAPPENED; DURING BRAKING THE BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE BRAKES FAILED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO PLOW INTO A GARAGE DOOR. THE CAR IS BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP NOW AND EVEN DURING DROP-OFF THEY TOLD US THAT THIS COULDN'T HAPPEN AND THAT WE WERE MISTAKEN. *TR
RED BRAKE LIGHT AND SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT A CONSTANT PROBLEM THAT HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM SINCE MAY 2010 AND IT IS NOW AUGUST 2010 AND IT IS STILL NOT FIXED. WE OWN A 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. WE HAVE HAD NEW BRAKES, A NEW WIRE HARNESS, SOME OTHER TIP REPLACED, AND A SENSOR REPLACED. WE HAVE EVEN HAD A FORD ENGINEER LOOK AT IT. I HAVE BEEN CONCERNED ABOUT HAVING AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN. THE VEHICLENLY HAS 58,000 MILES AND I BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM IS THE ABS MODULE. BUT THE ABS MODULE SHOULD NOT BE GOING OUT AT 58,000 MILES. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN VERY FRUSTRATING. *TR
ABS DASH LIGHT FLASHES INTERMITTENTLY WHEN BRAKING , NOISE AND CLUNKING FROM FRONT OF VEHICLE AS WELL AS JERKING . ABS TONE RING FAILURE AFTER ORIGINAL PART FAILURE WAS CORRECTED (REPLACED AXLES) ON BOTH FRONT AXLES. PARTS FAILED AGAIN ON ONE AXLE. *TR
NO SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES. UNDER DAILY DRIVING THE TONE RING A PART THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM RELIES ON FREQUENTLY FAILS. PREVIOUSLY THIS REQUIRED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FRONT AXLE. CURRENTLY JUST THE TONE RING IS REPLACED. *TR
BRAKE SYSTEM ON 2006 FORD HYBRID ESCAPE. REPLACED BRAKES AT REPUTABLE SHOP NEAR HOME 11/17/09 AS ABS LIGHT WAS ON AND 55,000 MILES ON CAR. SHOP INFORMED ME ABS LIGHT STILL ON SO THEY PUT CAR ON COMPUTER AND FOUND IT TO BE THE SENSOR ON THE BRAKE AXLE. THEY UNFORTUNATELY COULD NOT HELP ME AS FORD DOES NOT ALLOW ACCESS TO NECESSARY COMPONENTS TO FIX SYSTEM UNTIL CAR IS 5 YRS.OLD AND WAS TOLD THEY TRIED TO PUT A NEW STATIC RING ON AND IT MIGHT WORK. IF LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN TAKE TO DEALER. 2 WKS LATER ABS LIGHT ON AS WELL AS RED BRAKE LIGHT SO TOOK CAR TO WILLOWBROOK FORD DEALER. THEY INFORMED ME THE PART TO REPLACE IS $4300 WITHOUT LABOR. THIS SEEMS CRIMINAL FOR A PART TO COST THAT MUCH AS THE CAR IS ONLY A 2006. I HAVEN'T EVEN FINISHED PAYING FOR THE CAR. THEY TOLD ME I SHOULD OF GOTTEN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND I TOLD THEM THEY SHOULD MAKE A BETTER PRODUCT. I EXPECT A NEW CAR TO LAST LONGER THAN 3 YRS. AS IT STANDS TODAY THEY ARE TRYING TO DISCONNECT THE ABS SYSTEM BUT I AM NOT SURE OF THE SAFETY OF THE CAR. IF THEY CANNOT DO THAT I WILL BE FORCED TO PAY THE PRICE FOR THIS OUTRAGEOUS PART. CATASTROPIC FAILURE OF THE BRAKES. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD ESCAPE HEV. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, THE BRAKES FAILED. THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND READ "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM". THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. HE HAS NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 80,592. UPDATED 06/08/09 *BF THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT WAS DEFECTIVE. UPDATED 06/09/09.*JB UPDATED 6/9/09 *CN CONSUMER STATED CAR WAS TAKEN TO DREW FORD WHERE IT WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED, THEY TOOK A LOOK AT IT AND STATED NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR AND THAT CONSUMER SHOULD PICK IT UP. CONSUMER EXPLAINED HE HAD FILED 20 COMPLAINTS ONLINE WITH NHTSA. FOLLOWING DAY, DEALER TESTED THE VEHICLE AGAIN AND THE BRAKES ONCE AGAIN FAILED AT THE DEALERS PARKING LOT. THE 05-06 FORD ESCAPES HAVE A MAJOR FAILURE IN THEIR BRAKING AND AXLE SYSTEM. I BOUGHT A NEW ESCAPE IN 2006 IN LESS THEN TWO YEARS THE ABS LIGHT CAME AFTER REPLACING THE FRONT BRAKE PADS. I TOOK THE CAR TO A MECHANIC AND HE STATED THAT THE FRONT AXLE HAS "TEETH" ON IT THAT EASILY BREAK OFF AND THEREFORE DISENGAGING THE ABS SYSTEM. ON A DAILY BASIS THE BREAKS "THUMP" LIKE THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE, THIS HAPPENS AT ANY SPEED, EVEN WHILE TRYING TO PULL INTO A PARKING SPOT. THIS HAS NOT CAUSED ANY ACCIDENTS BUT WE NEVER KNOW IF THE BRAKES ARE GOING TO WORK THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO. MY VEHICLE WAS PAST ITS WARRANTY WHEN THIS PROBLEM FIRST OCCURRED, AND NOW I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE FRONT AXLE BECAUSE A ENGINEERING MALFUNCTION. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT FORD IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT THEY REFUSE TO PLACE A RECALL ON THE PARTS. I INQUIRED ABOUT FIXING THE PROBLEM, HE STATED THAT THE PARTS, WHICH AGAIN IS THE ENTIRE FRONT AXLE, IS ON BACK ORDER FOR AROUND 5 MONTHS AND THE COST IS AROUND $1500.00.I HAVE ALSO TALKED TO SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO OWN FORD ESCAPES AND THEY HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. IF FORD IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF FRONT AXLES WHY HASN'T THIS CONSTITUTED A RECALL OR AT LEAST A SAFETY INVESTIGATION. *TR
I STARTED THE CAR, AND THE ABS AND BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. HOWEVER, THE BRAKES SEEMED TO FUNCTION NORMALLY. AFTER I DROVE 1/4 MILE, I APPROACHED A TRAFFIC LIGHT, AND THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK. I WAS ABLE TO STOP BY GETTING ONTO THE SHOULDER AND PRESSING THE BRAKE TO THE FLOOR. IT TOOK ABOUT 100 YARDS TO STOP STARTING AT 35 MPH. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE BRAKES APPEARED TO WORK, AND I DROVE SLOWLY TO MY DESTINATION. WHEN LEAVING THE DESTINATION, I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT I REALIZED THAT THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK WHILE IN THE PARKING LOT. AFTER RESTARTING THE CAR TWICE, THE BRAKES WORKED, AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT TO THE DEALER. THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING, BUT THE BRAKES SEEMED TO WORK. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, BRAKE AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON DASH AND BRAKES FAILED. COULD ONLY GET MINOR STOPPING POWER WHEN BRAKES DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. MANAGED TO STOP WITHOUT CRASH. WHEN CAR WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED, THE LIGHTS WERE OFF AND THE BRAKES FUNCTIONED OKAY. DEALER CLAIMED THEY COULD FIND NO EVIDENCE OF A PROBLEM BECAUSE THE RESTART OF THE CAR CLEARED THE ERROR LOG. EXACT PROBLEM REAPPEARED 2 WEEKS LATER. BRAKE AND ABS LIGHT CAME ON DASH, BRAKES WOULD NOT STOP VEHICLE EXCEPT VERY MINOR BRAKING POWER WHEN DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THIS TIME, DROVE CAR TO NEARBY DEALER WITHOUT TURNING OFF AND DEMANDED THAT THEY DRIVE IT TO WITNESS PROBLEM. AGAIN, THEY INSISTED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM UNTIL THEY ACTUALLY DROVE THE VEHICLE. REPLACED MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER AND BLED BRAKES 3 TIMES BEFORE BRAKES PASSED TEST. *TR CONSUMER STATED COMPLAINT WAS REPORTED MORE THAN 8 YEARS AGO FOR A CAR THAT CONSUMER HASN'T OWNED FOR MORE THAN 7 YEARS. UPON PURCHASE RUMBLING WAS FELT WHILE BRAKING. THE FUCCILLO CAR DEALER MECHANIC SAID THAT IT WAS THE 4WD KICKING IN. THIS PROBLEM CONTINUED AND ONCE THE 90 DAY WARRANTY WAS UP THEIR STORY CHANGED. THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THE TONE RING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE SAID THEY HAVE HAD MANY OF THESE AND BE LOOKING FOR A RECALL. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE BRAKES BEGIN TO CLANG AND BANG WITHOUT WARNING. *TR

FOUR ATTEMPTS BY FORD SERVICE TO CORRECT AND ARE UNABLE TO DETERMINE CAUSE BECAUSE CODES ARE ERASED WHEN VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF(?). *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR THE BRAKE REPAIR AFTER THE FIRST TIME ABOUT 4 WEEKS AGO BUT WAS TOLD BY THE FORD DEALERSHIP THAT THERE WASN'T ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. AFTER THE SECOND TIME THEY NOW HAVE TO ORDER PARTS WHICH ARE ON BACK ORDER IN ORDER TO MAKE THE REPAIR. *NM
NORMAL CITY DRIVING INITIATED FAILURE OF BRAKES TO HAVE PRESSURE. IMMEDIATELY BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. BRAKES MAY BE APPLIED, BUT RELEASE AFTER APPLICATION. INITIALLY, WHEN BROUGHT INTO FORD DEALERSHIP 11 DAYS AGO, PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED TO BE ELECTRONIC, BUT AFTER REPLACEMENT OF ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM FOR BRAKES, THE PRESSURE FAILS TO RESUME. *JB
I PURCHASED A 2006 ESCAPE HYBRID ON APRIL 9TH & IMMEDIATELY IT HAD BRAKE FAILURE PROBLEMS - ESSENTIALLY NO BRAKES. IT HAS BEEN AT DEALERSHIP SINCE APRIL 10TH. THEY CLAIMED IT WAS FIXED ON APRIL 22 & WHEN I WENT TO GET IT, SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED IN TEST DRIVE. THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ELSE IS WRONG. THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE SENSOR, BUT OBVIOUSLY THAT DIDN'T RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE ESPECIALLY IN SOUTH FLORIDA, WHERE THE ABILITY TO PROPERLY BRAKE IS HIGHLY ESSENTIAL. *NM
