MY AWD 2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDV, WITH AROUND 64,000 MILES, STARTED HAVING BRAKING PROBLEMS, WHEN THE BRAKE AND ABS CLUSTER LIGHTS TURNED ON WHEN THE CAR STARTED. WHEN I SHIFT INTO ANY GEAR, THE "REGEN BRAKE DISABLED" WARNING COMES ON. I TRIED TO REVERS AT 5 MPH AND THE CAR WOULD BARELY BRAKE. I WAS ABLE TO BRAKE, BUT THE BRAKES WERE SPONGY, VEERING TO THE LEFT SLIGHTLY. I WENT TO A LOCAL AUTO SHOP AND THEY SCANNED FOR ANY ERROR CODES. I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING: C1524 BRAKE PEDAL SENSOR CAL. INCOMPLETE, C1480 R/F BRAKE PRESSURE CONTROL MALF., C1313 BRAKE HYDRAULIC PRESS. TRANSDUCER MALF., P0685 ENG. CONTROL MODULE POWER RELAY CONTROL, AND U0418 INVALID DATA RCVD FROM CONTROL MODULE. MY COUSIN WAS ABLE TO CLEAR THE CODES TO SEE IF WE RESTARTED THE CAR AND DEOVE AROUND IF THE SAME ERRORS WOULD POP BACK UP AND THEY DID. I HAVE READ ONLINE WHERE THOUSANDS, IF NOT MORE, WERE HAVING THE SAME HYDRAULIC/BRAKING PROBLEMS THAT COULD COST UPWARDS OF $5000 TO FIX. SOME EVEN REPORTED THAT REPLACING THE MASTER CYLINDER DIDNT FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE PERSONALLY HAD TWO OCCASSIONS WHERE MY CAR WOULD BARELY STOP NO MATTER HOW HARD I PRESSED DOWN ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. ALSO, WHEN MY VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF, WITH THE KEY TAKEN OUT, THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE MODULE OR CENSOR IS EMITTING A HIGH-PITCHED HUM FOR SEVERAL MINUTES WHEN NOTHING IS TURNED ON. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE FURTHER AS IT SEEMS LIKE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH SIMILAR YEAR MODEL HYBRIDS.

ABS & PARKING BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS, WARNING TONE & REGEN BRAKE MESSAGE ARE DISPLAYED. WHEN THIS HAS HAPPENED THE BRAKE PERFORMANCE BECAME "GRABBY" AND OVER TIME THE BRAKES WERE DANGEROUSLY BAD. FOR SEVERAL MONTHS IF I STOPPED THE VEHICLE, TURNED OFF IGNITION AND RESTARTED, THE WARNINGS WOULD GO AWAY AND THE BRAKES WOULD FUNCTION NORMALLY.I INFORMED THE FORD TECHNICIAN THE LAST TIME I HAD REGULAR SERVICE OF THIS PROBLEM AND THEY FOUND " NO ISSUE" WITH BRAKES. I TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO FORD 06/22/2017 AND THEY TOLD ME THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST IN EXCESS OF $5,800.00. I WILL DISCARD THIS VEHICLE AND REPLACE IT WITH A NON -FORD PRODUCT

2008 FORD ESCAPE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT FAILURE. CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM, ABS, AND EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHTS ALL GAME ON. DROVE CAR WITH LIMITED BRAKES TO MECHANIC WHO GOT CODES C1978 AND U2023. $4,700 PART. THIS SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS AND REALLY DISAPPOINTED THAT FORD HAS NOT DONE A RECALL ON THIS ITEM.

WHEN TRYING TO BRAKE THE BRAKE PETAL GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE AND REPAIR. AFTER SPENDING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR A NEW MASTER CYLINDER,ROTORS,CALIBERS,BRAKE PADS BLEEDING IF THE BRAKES MULTIPLE TIMES WE WERE THEN TOLD THAT THE ABS MODULE HAD TWO VALVES STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION. THIS PART SHOULD LAST THE LIFETIME OF THE CAR AND THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL COMPLAINTS TO FORD ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE AND MODULE. FORD NEEDS A TO DO HE RIGHT THING AND DO A RECALL ON THEIR ABS MODULE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH AND WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE BRAKE PEDAL REQUIRED EXCESSIVE FORCE IN ORDER TO RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER AND WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.

VEHICLE BRAKES FAIL FOR NO APPARENT REASON, THEN EVENTUALLY BEGIN WORKING FOR NO APPARENT REASON. NO WARNING IS GIVEN THAT ANYTHING IS WRONG WITH THE BRAKES (I.E. NO BRAKE LIGHT, AND NO "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT). IN ADDITION, THE "ALL OK" LIGHT REMAINS GREEN, INDICATING THAT NOTHING IS WRONG. THIS OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS MOVING AT ANY SPEED (I.E ABOVE 35 MPH OR BELOW 5 MPH). THE VEHICLE EVENTUALLY COMES TO A STOP, BUT ONLY AFTER A LENGTHY DECELERATION DISTANCE.*UPDATED 3-7-17 I WOULD SEE A WARNING THAT SAYS 'REGEN BRAKE FAILURE.' IN SOME CASES, DEPRESSING THE PEDAL WOULD CAUSE THE BRAKES TO LOCK-UP. IN OTHER CASES, THE VEHICLE WOULD SLOW DOWN GRADUALLY, BUT WOULD NEVER STOP EVEN IF THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS FULLY PRESSED. IN THE SECOND SITUATION, I WOULD BYPASS MY INTENDED STOP POINT, OFTEN A TURN. THE SITUATION WOULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING AND LAST UNTIL I TURNED OFF THE CAR. IT SOMETIMES WENT AWAY AFTER RESTARTING, MEANING THE BRAKES WOULD FUNCTION AS EXPECTED. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND SAID I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL MODULE AND SEVERAL BRAKE LINES. ESTIMATED COST WAS $6200. I CONTACTED FORD TO INQUIRE ABOUT A RECALL, AND WAS TOLD THAT NONE EXISTS FOR THIS SITUATION.*SMCH

FORD SHOULD HAVE RECALL TO GET TO BOTTOM OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT OR KILLED.

"CHECK BRAKES" AND "ABS" LIGHTS CAME ON, THEN "REGENERATIVE BRAKE SYSTEM DISABLED" ILLUMINATED, WARNING SOUNDED. TOOK CAR FOR REPAIR. MECHANIC PERFORMED DIAGNOSTIC, THEN BLED ALL 4 BRAKE SYSTEMS. LIGHTS WENT OFF AND BRAKES WORKED. SEVERAL DAYS LATER, SAME LIGHTS CAME ON AND WARNING BELL SOUNDED. BRAKES WERE ALMOST COMPLETELY INOPERABLE. RETURNED CAR TO MECHANIC. INSPECTED, THEN TOLD IT MIGHT NEED REGENERATIVE BRAKE SYSTEM REPLACEMENT. WARNING LIGHTS WERE OFF, BUT ILLUMINATED AGAIN A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER (02/22/17) TOOK CAR TO AUTOFAIR FORD, MANCHESTER, NH.WHERE BRAKES FAILED WHILE ENTERING DEALERSHIP AT 15 MPH. THEY KEPT CAR OVERNIGHT, SPENT 4 HOURS LABOR, BLED BRAKES, AND SAID CAR WAS FIXED (CHARGED $280). COUPLE HOURS LATER ALL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED, WARNING BELL SOUNDED AND LOST ALMOST ALL BRAKING CAPACITY WHILE ON HIGHWAY 93 SOUTH HEADING SOUTH TOWARDS BOSTON. CALLED FORD AND THEY TOLD ME THAT CAR NEEDED NEW REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM AND COMPUTER MODULE. COST OF EQUIPMENT ALONE WAS QUOTED AT APPROX. $6000 WITHOUT LABOR. AM IN THE PROCESS OF TRADING THE CAR. WITHOUT FUNCTIONAL BRAKES, CAR IS VIRTUALLY WORTHLESS. WHEN BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR AT LOW SPEEDS, BRAKES DID NOT STOP CAR; VEHICLE COASTED TO A STOP. IN SHORT, 2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID SUFFERED CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING AND THE WARNING WAS "REGEN BRAKES DISABLED". I WAS TOLD THIS WAS A DEFECT AND FORD WAS NOT COVERING THE COST OF FIXING, WHICH IS $5,000-7,000. WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE NEW AND IT HAS A BIT OVER 130,000 MILES AND IS IN GREAT SHAPE OTHERWISE. WE CAN'T FIX IT, SELL IT OR DRIVE IT.

YELLOW ABS LIGHT AND RED EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED WHILE DRIVING. BRAKE PETAL WENT SOFT TO THE POINT WHERE BRAKING WAS DIFFICULT. A FORD SERVICE CENTER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND INDICATED THAT THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE PART COSTS $4800 DOLLARS AND THE TOTAL REPAIR IS $5300. THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM FOR THE ESCAPE HYBRID. AND IN MY CASE, RENDERS THE VEHICLE ESSENTIALLY WORTHLESS SINCE THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS SLIGHTLY MORE THAN THE VALUE OF TAHE VEHICLE ITSELF. I'VE BEEN GIVEN NO ALTERNATIVES OR OPTIONS. *TT *CN

THE ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT APPEARED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WHILE DRIVING ON A STATE HIGHWAY. CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT APPEARED AS A DIGITAL READ OUT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. TURNED OFF THE ENGINE BELIEVING IT TO BE A 'RESET' ISSUE. THE ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT DID NOT COME ON AGAIN. TWO DAYS LATER, UPON BACKING UP THESE LIGHTS APPEARED AGAIN ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. CALLED LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. DEALERSHIP PERFORMED ABS SELFTEST AND GOT CODE C1313-AO AND U2023-A0. THE CODES INDICATED THAT THE HCU (HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT) REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. DEALERSHIP QUOTED $5,900.00 REPAIR COST TO REPLACE HCU SENSOR. THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT CAUTION US TO NOT DRIVE THE CAR AND WE REMAIN CONCERNED ABOUT SAFE DRIVING. HE SAID, "THE BRAKES WILL GET MUSHY AND WE WILL EVENTUALLY LOSING BRAKING POWER." CHECKED FORD WEBSITE TO DETERMINE WHETHER A RECALL FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE HAD BEEN POSTED. NO RECALL BY FORD NOTED AT THIS TIME. A REVIEW OF ONLINE POSTS INDICATES THAT MANY ESCAPE HYBRID OWNERS HAVE ENCOUNTERED THE SAME PROBLEM AND HIGHWAY SAFETY IS CONCERNING TO OWNERS. *TR

I HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL EPISODES WHILE BRAKING OF THE YELLOW ABS AND THE RED BRAKE WARNING LAMP LIGHTING UP AND THE DISPLAY SAYING "REGEN BRAKES DISABLED" OVER THE PAST YEAR. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE BRAKES ARE SLOW TO STOP THE CAR WITH A JERKING ACTION. ALL OF MY FAILURES HAVE HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING IN TOWN. ONCE I ENDED UP IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION BEFORE THE CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE ONLY WAY I COULD CORRECT THE ISSUE WOULD BE TO STOP THE CAR, DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL HARD TO THE FLOOR,THEN SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE. I WOULD THEN RESTART MY CAR AND THE BRAKES WOULD THEN RETURN TO NORMAL OPERATION. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE ON LINE AND HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE POSTING COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. ALL COMPLAINTS ARE FROM OWNERS OF FEH'S 2005 TO 2008. WHY HASN'T THIS LIFE SAFETY ISSUE BEEN ADDRESSED? FROM WHAT I HAVE READ, THE REPAIR COULD BE FROM $3000 TO $7000 DOLLARS. ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC BRAKE (EHB) SYSTEM HAD A LEAK IN THE MASTER CYLINDER AND THE ABS BRAKES ENGAGED WHILE DRIVING CAUSING THE BRAKES TO SMOKE.

THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHTS COME ON SERVICE BRAKES NOW IN MESSAGE CENTER MY WIFE DRIVES THE VEHICLE WITH MY CHILDREN AND AT TIMES THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR VEHICLE DOESN'T STOP WHEN THIS OCCURS THIS IS A ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRID SINCE 2005 I THINK THESE ABS HCU SHOULD BE A RECALL DUE TO THE DANGER AND THE COST TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE OF DEFECTIVE BRAKE PARTS. *TT THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS REPLACED. *TR
