CONSUMER STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING SMOKE CAME FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. BUT THERE WAS NO FIRE. SHE STATES THAT SOME TIMES YOU CAN SMELL IT BURNING, BUT NEVER SEE FIRE. ALSO, CONSUMER COMPLAINED THAT VEHICLE STALLED WHEN SHE STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR. VEHICLE HESITATED BEFORE MOVING, THEN WHEN IT MOVED, ONE COULD SMELL GAS. CONSUMER DID NOT TAKE VEHICLE TO REPAIR SHOP FOR CHECKING ON THESE PROBLEMS BECAUSE SHE WAS THE SECOND OWNER . *AK

MY FORD YEAR 2000 IDLES ROUGH AND STALLS IN COLD WEATHER. I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS DIRTY INJECTORS AND KEPT HAVING THEM FLUSHED WHICH TEMP. FIXED PROB. A MECHANIC STATED THAT IT WAS THE TIMING CHAIN AND THAT FORD WOULD FIX IT FOR FREE, FOR THEY DID ON HIS EXPLORER. I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY SAID THAT I WAS OVER THE MILES AND THAT IT WAS A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION RECALL. WELL NOT ONLY AM I NOT SATISFIED, BUT IT SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY FACTOR AS WELL. WHAT IF A PULL OUT INTO AN INTERSECTION AND MY CAR STALLS. CROSSING A HIGHWAY AND MY CAR STALLS. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT FORD WOULD HAVE CARED MORE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS ESPECIALLY GIVEN THAT THIS IS MY 3RD FORD AND I AM ONLY 30 YRS OLD. REGARDLESS, OF THAT FACT, THAEY SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO FIX THE PROBLEM IN ORDER TO KEEP THEIR DRIVERS SAFE ON THE ROAD. *LA

VEHICLE STARTED LOSING POWER. WAS TOLD IT NEEDED A TUNE UP. ALSO WAS TOLD THAT THE SPARK PLUG WIRES WERE BROKEN AND FRAYED. THEY WERE REPLACED ALONG WITH ALL THE FILTERS AND NEW FLUIDS AS WELL AS A FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER. WHEN THIS DID NOT WORK I WAS INFORMED THAT THE CAR NEEDED TO GO TO A FORD DEALER AS THE CAR WAS "THROWING OUT ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT CODES". IT WAS TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP AND I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE ADVISER THAT THE CAR WAS FIXED AND RUNNING IN TIP TOP SHAPE. SINCE THEN I HAVE ENCOUNTERED STALLING AND STILL NO POWER AND THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING ROUGHER. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON RIGHT AFTER I PICKED IT UP FROM THE DEALERSHIP. IT HAS COST ME $1,000 SO FAR AND AM AFRAID WHAT IT WILL FINALLY COST TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS VEHICLE. *NLM

I PREVIOUSLY OWNED A 1998 EXPLORER THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM I AM HAVING WITH MY 2000 EXPLORER. FROM TALKING WITH THE FORD DEALER MECHANIC, THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM THAT IS OCCURRING AFTER 30,000 MILES THAT IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE PROBLEM IS UPON STARTUP OF THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE WILL CRANK, AND WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS RELEASED, THE ENGINE DIES IMMEDIATELY. THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING IS TO KEEP ONE FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL DEPRESSED. TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE ONE FOOT MUST BE ON THE GAS AND ONE ON THE BRAKE TO KEEP THE ENGINE FROM STALLING. THIS IS PRESENTING A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND FORD IS QUITE AWARE OF IT, BUT DOING NOTHING IN THE FORM OF A RECALL OR SAFETY BULLETIN TO CONSUMERS. FORTUNATELY MY 1998 FIRST FAILED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT MY 2000 HAPPENED AFTER MY 36,000 MILE WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY BUT FREQUENT AT TIMES, AFTER DRIVING SEVERAL MILES, IT WOULD CORRECT ITSELF. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE USED WITH 16000 MILES, I BEGAN TO NOTICE A VIBRATION AND RATTLING SOUND WHILE AT IDLE. IT APPEARS TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN WHEN THE A/C COMPRESSOR IS RUNNING, CAUSING THE IDLE RPM'S TO BE EVEN LOWER. AT THIS LOW IDLE SPEED OF AROUND 500-600 RPM, THE VIBRATION AND RATTLING OCCURS AND ONLY STOPS IF THE RPM'S ARE INCREASED. AND WHILE DRIVING RECENTLY WITH 32600 MILES ON THE VEHICLE, THE RPM'S SEEMED TO BE ABNORMALLY HIGH, RESULTING IN INCREASED BRAKING EFFORT TO SLOW THE VEHICLE, AND AT STARTUP OF THE ENGINE, INITIAL IDLE SPEEDS OF UP TO 2500 RPM. ENGINE TEMPERTURE WAS ALSO NOTED TO BE ABOVE THE TYPICAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND COULD ONLY BE LOWERED BY SETTING THE HEATER & FAN ON HIGH TO REMOVE HEAT FROM THE COOLANT. NLM
