IN NOVEMBER 2002, I PURCHASED A 2002 FORD F-150 EXTENDED CAB, WHICH WAS MADE IN CANADA 09/01. AFTER THE BREAK-IN PERIOD I NOTICED THAT AT SPEEDS OF 80-85 MPH THE VEHICLE WOULD WHINE , BUT I ASSUMED THAT WAS NORMAL BECAUSE AFTER 85 MPH THE WHINE WENT AWAY. AT ABOUT 89,000 MILES AND THE END OF THE WARRANTY, AT 35-50 MPH THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE LOUD ROARING/WHINING NOISE FROM THE REAR END. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR REPAIRS ON 10 JANUARY 2007,. THE DEALER REPLACED THE PINION GEAR AND ASSEMBLY AT A COST OF 1501.00 , AND THE DEALER SAID IT WAS FIXED. I DROVE THE VEHICLE LESS THAN 1,500 MILES AFTER THE REPAIR WAS MADE, THE VEHICLE STARTED DOING THE SAME THING AGAIN AT SPEEDS 40-50 MPH, BUT WITH AN ADDED TWIST THIS TIME, THE TRUCK WOULD WHINE EVEN WHEN I ACCELERATE. I PUT THE TRUCK BACK IN THE SHOP FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN ON 01/23/2007. THE TRUCK HAS A 3.55 REAR END. *JB
BEGINNING OF 2006, I PURCHASED MY USED 2002 FORD EXPLORER. AROUND 70,000 MILES, ABOUT 9 MONTHS LATER, THE ROARING NOISE IN THE REAR WAS UNBEARABLE. I PUT ALL NEW TIRES,I PUT ALL NEW BRAKES THINKING THIS WAS CAUSING THE NOISE. FINALLY I WENT ONLINE TO FIND THE MANY, MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE REAR END NOISE. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALLS, EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE, BECAUSE IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE. THEY SUGGESTED I HAVE IT DIAGNOSED AT A FORD DEALERSHIP. ON 10/20/07, I HAD THIS DIAGNOSIS DONE, AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL AND WAS ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE, OR DRIVE AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE IT COULD CEASE UP WHILE DRIVING, AND CAN BE A SAFTEY ISSUE IF UNIT FAILS. THE COST OF THIS REPAIR, PARTS AND LABOR IS ABOUT $1200. IS FORD WAITING FOR THIS TO CEASE UP, CAUSING INJURIES OR DEATHS BEFORE THEY DEEM IT A SAFTEY ISSUE, AND RECALL THESE VEHICLES FOR REPAIR. I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE AT THIS TIME AND NEED MY VEHICLE. *TR
MANUAL CLUTCH MALFUNCTIONED INCLUDING REMAINING DISENGAGED (IN GEAR) WHILE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR. SLAVE CYLINDER FAILED AND LEAKED FLUID NECESSITATING REPLACEMENT. OCCURRED AT <45000 MILES AND IS IDENTICAL TO THE FAIL MECHANISM EXHIBITED ON NEIGHBORS 2001 F150 4.6 AT 39000 MILES. *JB
AT ABOUT 75K MILES, A VERY FAINT WHINE WAS COMING FROM THE BACK END OF THE VEHICLE, MAINLY AUDIBLE WITH ACCELERATION AND AT SPEEDS OF ABOUT 35 MPH. IT SLOWLY PROGRESSED, WE TOOK IT TO A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS HAPPENING WITH MANY FORD 150'S WITH THIS YEAR, IT WAS A DEFECT IN THE PARTS (THE MATERIAL IT WAS MADE WITH). WE WERE TOLD TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE IT UNTIL NOISE WAS TOO LOUD. AT 92K MILES, IT WAS A PRETTY LOUD WHINE AT ALL SPEEDS EXCEPT ABOUT 70 MPH, AND THEN PROGRESSED TO A GRINDING NOISE. I JUST TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL, PINION AND CARRIAGE GEARS WERE "TORN UP". THEY FOUND A REPLACEMENT AND TOTAL COST IS $1800. AT THIS POINT FORD IS NOT FIXING PART, SINCE THERE IS NO EXTENDED WARRANTY, BUT THIS IS NOT A PART THAT SHOULD BE GOING OUT AT 90K MILES EITHER, AND WITH THE DEALERSHIP SAYING THIS IS HAPPENING OFTEN AND THERE WAS A DEFECT IN THE PART, FORD SHOULD BE RECALLING THIS, OR AT THE VERY LEAST PAYING FOR THE FIX WHEN IT STARTS TO GO BAD. *JB
I BROUGHT THE TRUCK ON JUNE 1, 2004. A FEW MONTHS AFTER I BROUGHT THE TRUCK IT STARTED GIVING ME PROBLEMS. I TRIED TALKING TO THE DEALERSHIP BUT THEY WERE NO HELP AT ALL. I HAVE TRIED TALKING TO THEM PLENTY OF TIMES. I HAVE TOOK MY TRUCK TO AN MECHANIC AN THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM . I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO THE DEALERSHIP IS NO HELP AT ALL. THEIR WARRANTY POLICY IS A FRAUD THEY DO NOT KEEP UP WITH IT. I AM TIRED OF THIS SITUATION. THAT'S THE REASON I WANT TO CANCEL THE PURCHASE OF THIS CAR. *JB

DT: CONTACT STATES HIS CAR ROLLED BACKWARDS AND HIT A MAN PINNING HIM BETWEEN TWO TRUCKS. THE CAR WAS LOCKED AND PARKED AT THE TIME. HE IMMEDIATELY GOT IN HIS VEHICLE AND STARTED IT AND PULLED THE CAR OFF OF THE MAN. HE REPORTS HAVING NO PROBLEMS OF THIS KIND PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT OR SINCE THIS INCIDENT. *JB UPDATED 12/07/05/ *JB
SHUDDER IN DRIVETRAIN AT SLOW/IDLE SPEED. FORD DEALER REPLACED DRIVE SHAFT, AND TRANSFER CASE - DID NOT FIX PROBLEM. STILL DO NOT HAVE ANY ANSWERS OR FIXES. *NM

2002 EXPLORER REAR AXLE MAKES HOWLING\NOISES WHEN ACCELERATING. FORD WILL NOT REPAIR REAR AXLE. REAR AXLE NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED BY INDEPENDENT SHOP.
CONTINUOUS ROARING NOISE COMING FROM REAR OF OUR 2002 FORD EXPLORER. WAS DETERMINED THAT REAR DIFFERENTIAL WAS BAD. IF IT WOULD HAVE GONE OUT WHILE DRIVING, TRUCK COULD HAVE LOCKED UP. WAS TOLD BY SERVICE THAT WAS A BIG SAFETY CHANCE TO TAKE. OUT OF WARRANTY ON MILES. (BUT NOT ON 3 YEARS).SO IT COST US $1900 OUT OF POCKET TO REPAIR. HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD FORD IS AWARE OF PROBLEM. *JB
DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD F150. THE REAR END DIFFERENTIAL MADE A WHINING NOISE. THEY TOLD HIM THAT IT WILL NOT HURT THE VEHICLE BUT IT WAS NOT NORMAL SINCE THE JUNE 16,2005 CONTACT WAS TRYING TO GET VEHICLE FIXED. THEY REPLACED THE RACK AND PINION TWICE, BUT PROBLEM RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER TOLD CONTACT THAT THEY COULD NOT FIX THE VEHICLE. TECHNICIAN AT DEALERSHIP SAID HE OWNED THE SAME VEHICLE AND IT WAS DOING THE SAME THING. THE DEALERSHIPS LAUGHED WHEN CONTACT BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO BE FIXED. AT 40-45 MPH CONTACT COULD HEAR THE NOISE ,AND IF WHEN PULLING TA LOAD THE NOISE GOT WORSE. THE DEALERSHIP TRIED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, BUT FORD KEPT SENDING WRONG PARTS THAT WERE NOT CORRECTING THE PROBLEM. CONTACT HAS HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON VEHICLE. *AK *NM
I HAVE A 2002 FORD EXPLORER. I HAVE APPROXIMATELY 85,000 MILES ON THIS CAR AND HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION. THE O/D LIGHT CAME ON FLASHING. THEN IT REFUSED TO SHIFT INTO SECOND GEAR. IT HAS SHIFTED HARD SINCE WE PURCHASED IT USED WITH APPROXIMATELY 25,000 MILES ON IT. WHAT A PAIN. I HAVE BEEN TO MANY FORD FORUMS AND I SEE NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL YEAR. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THIS CAR PRONTO. EVERY ONE I KNOW WHO HAS THIS MAKE AND MODEL ARE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. THEY NEED TO CORRECT THIS ITEM NOW. OR WE WILL JUST HAVE TO BUY JAPANESE NEXT TIME. THEY BELIEVE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE.
RIGHT AFTER 2002 EXPLORER SPORT 4X4 WAS OUT OF WARRANTY A WHINE FROM THE DIFFERENTIAL IN THE RANGE OF 40 - 80 MILE PER HOUR HAPPENS. FORD STATES TO LIVE WITH IT AND DOES NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILTY FOR DEFECTIVE PARTS AND MANUFACTURING OF DIFFERENTIAL.
WHILE DRIVING YOU EXPERIENCE A HESITATION FORD DEALERSHIP ORIGINALLY SAID IT WAS A SPARK PLUG-AND REPLACED IT-PROBLEM STILL EXISTS- CURRENTLY IT IS BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP-AND AT THIS POINT THEY SAID THERE IS A PROBLEM WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION BUT THEY DO NOT KNOW SPECIFICALLY WHAT PROBLEM IS-OR WHAT IF ANYTHING THEY WILL PAY FOR PROBLEM- IN THE MEANTIME I HAVE TO PAY FOR A RENTAL- THE SUV HAS 48,000 MILES- I HAVE KEPT UP WITH ALL SERVICES. *JB
MY 2002 FORD F-150'S TRANNY COMPLETELY BROKE AT 35,000 MILES 27 DAYS AFTER THE 3 YEAR WARRANTY WAS UP. I DON'T HAUL OR PULL ANYTHING WITH THIS TRUCK. WE ARE HAVING TO PUT A FACTORY REBUILT TRANNY IN IT AS WE SPEAK. *NM
WE HAVE OWNED OUR 2002 F150 4 DOOR TRUCK FOR 5 MONTHS NOW PURCHASED IN DEC 04', WE HAVE 34,000 MILES ON THIS TRUCK WHICH WAS PURCHASED USED. ON SATURDAY 4/23/05 OUR TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY SLIPPED OUT LEAVING US NO POWER ON A BUSY, HILLY, COUNTRY ROAD. THE TRUCK'S RMP'S WOULD GO UP HOWEVER, THE TRUCK WAS NOT GAINING SPEED ONLY LOSING SPEED, WE ARE VERY LUCKY THAT NO ONE CAME OVER THE HILL, OR THIS WOULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR WRECK. ONCE WE GOT US AND VEHICLE TO SAFETY WE CALLED OUR FORD DEALERSHIP CHUCK ANDERSON FORD, WHO TOLD US TO HAVE IT TOWED IN. HOWEVER, THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE TOW SINCE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE EVIDENTLY WENT OUT OF WARRANTY ON FEB. 14TH OF THIS YEAR 2005. I DON'T BELIEVE A TRUCK WITH ONLY 34,000 MILES ON IT SHOULD HAVE A TRANSMISSION BLOWN IN IT. WE THEN HAD THE TRUCK TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH THE DEALERSHIP TODAY, WHICH WE WE'RE TOLD WE WOULD HAVE TO COVER THE DEDUCTIBLE OF $400/500.00 FOR THIS REPAIR. THEY ARE NOW TEARING THE TRANSMISSION APART. *AK
DRIVING AT SLOW SPEED ON GRAVEL ROAD, LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE, SWERVED TO THE RIGHT, WAS ABLE TO STOP VEHICLE, FOUND LEFT REAR WHEEL HAD COME OFF, LEFT REAR AXLE SHAFT BROKEN AT WHEEL. NO VEHICLE DAMAGE, DID NOT CONTACT ANYTHING. AXLE JUST BROKE. *AK
HEARD BANGING IN REAR OF TRUCK,MOSTLY WHILE BACKING UP AND TURNING TO LEFT AT FIRST. HEARD LOUD BANG WHILE PULLING INTO GAS STATION,THEN WHEN I DROVE AWAY,FELT DRAGGING,STILL NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS,TILL I GOT HOME WHILE BACKING INTO A PARKING SPOT,HEARD THE LOUD BANG AGAIN. AFTER SOME IVESTIGATION,DETERMINED THE PROBLEM WAS IN THE DIFFERENTIAL. HAD TO HAVE TRUCK TOWED TO DEALER,AND THEY FOUND BROKEN SPIDER GEARS IN THE DIFFERENTIAL. DEALER REPLACED PARTS. SATTISFIED WITH REPAIR.*AK
THE EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE OF MY VEHICLE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSTATE WAS THAT THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT STARTED TO FLASH WHICH IN TURN WOULD TRIGGER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE FAILURE WAS A SHOT TRANSMISSION AT ONLY 60,000 MILES. A PROBLEM THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY KNOWS ABOUT FROM THE HUNDREDS OF TECH BULLETIN'S I'VE READ. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN INTO ADAMSON FORD IN BIRMINGHAM,ALA. AND WAS DIAGNOSED AS HAVING TROUBLE CODES,P0733,P0735,P0775 AND A FAULTY POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. AFTER RECEIVING MY CAR AND ALMOST $800.00 LATER,THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT STARTED BLINKING TRIGGERING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. AFTER RETURNING TO THE DEALER WHOM THEN INFORMS ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO BUY A REMANUFACTURER TRANSMISSION AT OVER $2200,00 PLUS LABOR. I CAN'T AFFORD THIS AND NOW I'M STUCK WITH A LATER MODEL CAR THAT I CAN'T USE, AND A HIGH CAR NOTE. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD AGAIN PERIOD. *JB
THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2002 EXPLORER STARTED SHUDDERING WHEN GOING UP HILLS, WHEN PASSING CARS, AND THERE IS A DELAY WHEN SHIFTING TO REVERSE. WHEN TRYING TO GET INTO REVERSE THERE IS ALSO VERY ROUGH SHIFTING WITH THE DELAY. THESE PROBLEMS STARTED AT ABOUT 45,000 MILES. *JB
I WAS DRIVING DOWN SR 33 IN POLK CITY WHEN IT SEEMED AS IF MY CAR WAS SLOWING DOWN. I HAD THE PEDAL DEPRESSED BUT THE TRUCK CONTINUED TO SLOW DOWN. I HAD TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN THE SPEEDOMETER FELL BACK DOWN TO ZERO I ATTEMPTED TO TAKE OFF AGAIN. ONCE AGAIN, THE TRUCK WOULD GET TO 50 AND THEN NOT SHIFT TO THE NEXT GEAR. THIS WAS THE FIRST AND ONLY SIGNS SOMETHING WAS WRONG. I ASSUMED IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION. I DROVE TO WORK (15 MILES) IN SECOND GEAR, CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD IT TOWED TO LAKELAND FORD. I WAS TOLD THE OVERDRIVE CLUTCH BURNED UP AND THE DIRECT DRIVE PAK BURNED UP. THE FORD DEALERSHIP WANTED $2,326.09 TO FIX A 2002 VEHICLE THAT IS NOT EVEN TWO YEARS OLD AND HAS 44,176 MILES ON IT. MOST OF THE MILES ON THIS VEHICLE WERE HIGHWAY MILES ALWAYS DRIVEN WITH OVERDRIVE ON AND ONLY WAS SOMETHING TOWED. THIS VEHICLE HAS THE TOWING PACKAGE IN IT SO THIS PROBLEM SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. MY WARRANTY WAS 3 YEARS/36,000 MILES. TRUCK IS NOW AT AAMCO WITH TRANSMISSION BEING REBUILT. *LA
TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS: CLUTCH DOES NOT DISENGAGE PROPERLY. DEALER REPLACED CLUTCH ASSEMBLY AT CONSUMER'S EXPENSE. *AK
TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS: CLUTCH DID NOT DISENGAGE PROPERLY. DRIVER HAD TO CHANGE GEARS REPEATEDLY IN ORDER TO SHIFT. THIS PRODUCED DANGEROUS DRIVING PROBLEMS. DEALER REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER RELAY AT CONSUMER'S EXPENSE. *AK
TRUCK IS A F-150 WITH A 3.55 LIMITED SLIP AXLE. THERE IS A VERY NOTICEABLE WHINE COMING FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTAIL. NOISE STARTS AT 40 MPH BUT IS MOST NOTICEABLE AT 60 MPH. NOISE IS WITH SLIGHT ACCELERATION, IF I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS IT STOPS. I HAVE HAD THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER THREE DIFFERENT TIMES. THEY HAVE REPLACED THE BEARINGS, DRIVE SHAFT AND GEARS BUT IT HASN'T HELPED. THIS IS A WIDESPREAD KNOWN PROBLEM BUT THEY DON'T SEEM TO HAVE A FIX FOR THE PROBLEM. I WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO SELL THIS TRUCK WITH THIS PROBLEM.*AK
