THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, HE SWERVED AND CRASHED INTO A DITCH IN ORDER TO AVOID A CRASH WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE WHO WAS MERGING INTO HIS LANE. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO FOUR TREES BUT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LIGHT CAN CAME ON AND OFF WHENEVER THE SEAT BELT WAS ENGAGED OR SOMEONE WOULD SIT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE CONTACT FOUND NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07V001000 (AIR BAGS) AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE SEAT POSITION SENSOR SUB-HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MY 2004 HONDA ACCORD EXL GENERATED A SEAT POSITION SENSOR SRS CODE AT 85,000 MILES. SRS LIGHT WAS CONTINUOUSLY ON. I FOUND THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN # 07V001000 RECALL FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE ON THE 2004 ACCORDS, BUT MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE HONDA DEALER WOULD NOT COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIR AS A RESULT, BUT WAS FULLY AWARE OF THIS "COMMON" ISSUE. THEY INDICATED I SHOULD NOT HAVE THE ISSUE AGAIN ONCE FIXED. I ALSO CONTACTED HONDA AND NOTIFIED THEM OF THE EXTREME SAFETY-RELATED ISSUE, BUT THEY REFUSED TO COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIR. NOW 4 YEARS LATER AT 155,000 MILES, THE SRS LIGHT IS ONCE AGAIN ON AND THE CODE INDICATES THE SAME SEAT POSITION SENSOR ISSUE. I CONTACTED HONDA ONCE AGAIN AND RAISED THE ISSUE. I UNFORTUNATELY RECEIVED NO COMPENSATION OR UNDERSTANDING FOR THE REPAIR. I STRESSED THE FACT THAT THIS IS A CRITICAL SAFETY-RELATED PROBLEM AND HONDA SHOULD TAKE THE MATTER MORE SERIOUSLY. *TR

MY 2004 HONDA ACCORD HAD BEEN LEFT PARKED OVERNIGHT ON OUR DRIVEWAY. AT ABOUT 10:30 IN THE MORNING THE NEXT DAY,12/18/11, I GOT INTO THE CAR, AND WITH MY DOOR STILL WIDE OPEN AND THE CAR IN "PARK", I TURNED ON THE IGNITION AND STARTED THE MOTOR FOR A 2 OR 3 MINUTE WARM-UP. I WAS ON THE DRIVER SEAT AND MY WIFE ON THE PASSENGER SEAT WITH HER DOOR ALSO WIDE OPEN. I WAS TALKING TO MY WIFE WITH MY FACE TURNED TOWARDS HER WHILE THE CAR WARMED UP. AFTER ABOUT TWO MINUTES, I TURNED OFF THE MOTOR AND PULLED OUT THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH TO HAND IT TO MY WIFE STILL FACING HER WITH MY LEFT SIDE TOWARDS THE STEERING WHEEL. OUR HOUSE KEY AND THE CAR KEY WERE ON THE SAME KEY CHAIN AND I WAS HANDING IT TO MY WIFE TO LOCK THE FRONT DOOR OF THE HOUSE. RIGHT AT THAT MOMENT, THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG VIOLENTLY EXPLODED WITH FULL FORCE AND WITH A VERY LOUD BANG WHIPPING MY FACE AND MY LEFT EAR. WHATEVER I HAD IN MY HANDS (MY WALLET, A CD AND THE CAR KEYS) WERE ALL BLOWN AWAY AND LANDED OUTSIDE THE CAR AND I WAS COMPLETELY DEAFENED AND DISORIENTED BY THE BLOW AND THE LOUD EXPLOSION. FOR THE NEXT TWO HOURS OR SO, I WAS HURTING IN MY LEFT EAR AND WAS UNABLE TO HEAR ANYTHING WITH THAT EAR. ITS BEEN MORE THAN 24 HOURS SINCE THAT INCIDENT AND MY EAR THOUGH NOT HURTING AS MUCH, STILL HAS SOME RINGING. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO THE AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR COMPANY BUT AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THEIR HANDLING OF THIS SITUATION. THEY WANT ME TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP AND HAVE IT CHECKED ALL AT MY EXPENSE. THEY REFUSE TO PAY FOR ANY EXPENSES WHATSOEVER THAT I MAY INCUR WITH REGARDS TO THIS INCIDENT INCLUDING MEDICAL CHECK-UP. AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THEY CLAIM THAT THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND AS SUCH THEY ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS. THIS IS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE, IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY MATTER, THEY CANNOT ABSOLVE OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. I FEEL TOTALLY HELPLESS!! *TR

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SEAT POSITION SENSOR HAD FAILED. THE DEALER MENTIONED NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07V001000 (AIR BAGS: FRONTAL: SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE), BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN, BUT THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 57,000.
WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT ON THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH, THE PASSENGER SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS DEPLOYED WITHOUT EXPLANATION (BOTH THE BAG THAT DEPLOYS THROUGH THE CEILING LINER AND THE BAG THAT DEPLOYS THROUGH THE SIDE OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT). DUE TO THE VIOLENCE AND CONFUSION OF THE DEPLOYMENT EXPLOSION, I FIRST THOUGHT THAT THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY VEHICLE MUST HAVE BEEN CRUSHED IN A COLLISION WITH AN UNSEEN SEMI-TRAILER TRUCK. EARS RINGING FROM THE CONCUSSION, I INITIALLY FOUGHT TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE, BUT SOON REALIZED THAT THE TIRES WERE STILL INTACT. AS THE SMOKE CLEARED, I SAW THAT THE NEAREST VEHICLES WERE 100+ YARDS AHEAD OR BEHIND MY VEHICLE. AT THE NEXT EXIT, I INSPECTED THE VEHICLE UNDER A STREET LIGHT. THERE WAS NO APPARENT DAMAGE TO THE EXTERIOR. DURING LATER INSPECTIONS BY AN INSURANCE ADJUSTOR AND THE HONDA DEALERSHIP, NO CAUSE FOR DEPLOYMENT WAS FOUND. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND HENCE NO EVIDENCE THAT AN OBJECT HIT THE UNDERCARRIAGE TO TRIGGER THE DEPLOYMENT. THE ONLY EXTERNAL DAMAGE WAS A SMALL GOLF-BALL SIZED DENT IN THE ROOF OVER THE RIGHT CENTER PILLAR. THE DENT WAS APPARENTLY CAUSED BY THE STRONG TORQUE THAT THE DEPLOYING SIDE-CURTAIN AIRBAG APPLIED TO THE WELDED ROOF MOUNT TO WHICH THE AIR BAG PACKAGE BOLTS. HENCE, ALL INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE (>$3000 USD) WAS CAUSED BY THE FALSE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT ITSELF. THE INSURANCE COMPANY CONCLUDED THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF A COLLISION AND REFUSED TO COVER THE DAMAGES. THE HONDA DEALERSHIP SIMILARLY REFUSED TO COVER THE DAMAGE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE DEALERSHIP FURTHER CLAIMED THAT THE AIR BAG CONTROLLERS DO NOT SAVE THE STATE OF THE SENSORS WHEN A DEPLOYMENT IS TRIGGERED, AND HENCE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DIAGNOSE FAILURES. I FIND IT DISTURBING THAT SO-CALLED 'SAFETY' EQUIPMENT IN A PROPERLY MAINTAINED VEHICLE CAN SELF-DESTRUCT AND POTENTIALLY KILL THE OCCUPANT AND NEITHER THE INSURANCE COMPANY NOR THE MANUFACTURER TAKES ANY RESPONSIBILITY. *TR

THE FAILURE OCCURRED SPONTANEOUSLY REGARDLESS IF THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION OR AT START- UP AND WHETHER THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WAS OCCUPIED OR UNOCCUPIED. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. (THE FAILURE) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT, HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, FROM JUST MINUTES AT A TIME TO DAYS AT A TIME, A FAILURE OF THE SPS CAUSES THE AIR BAG SYSTEM TO DEFAULT TO FULL INFLATION PRESSURE, REGARDLESS OF THE SEAT POSITION. 3. I AM NOT ALONE, CHECKING DIFFERENT HONDA FORUMS, THERE ARE MANY HONDA OWNERS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. *TR
2004 HONDA ACCORD EX 4 CYLINDER, 5 SPEED MANUAL, ORIGINAL OWNER. HAD HONDA HANDLE THE RECALL FIX ON DRIVER FRONT AIRBAG WHEN THAT RECALL WAS ISSUED YEARS AGO. EVERYTHING OK PER HONDA AND THE DASHBOARD INDICATORS. WITHIN THE LAST 2 YEARS THE DASHBOARD LIGHT FOR DRIVER'S FRONT AIRBAG WILL INTERMITTENTLY COME ON, STAY ON FOR ENTIRE TRIPS. HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO CONNECT ITS ACTIVATION TO ANY SPECIFIC OCCURRENCE OR REGULAR PATTERN. ASK MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC ABOUT IT AND HE REFERRED ME TO THE DEALER. HAVEN'T MADE AN APPOINTMENT. OVER THE PAST 10 MONTHS, STARTING APPROXIMATELY AUGUST 2009, THE AIR LIGHT IN MY 2004 HONDA ACCORD EXL WOULD INTERMITTENTLY COME ON THEN GO BACK OFF. MORE RECENTLY, IT COMES ON A DAILY BASIS. WHEN I BUCKLE MY SEATBELT AND START THE CAR IT MAY APPEAR AND STAY ON THE ENTIRE TIME WHILE DRIVING. THEN WHEN I STOP AND TURN OFF THE CAR THEN TURN IT BACK ON, THE LIGHT MAY OR MAY NOT SHOW UP AGAIN. I FOUND THAT THERE WAS A NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V001000 FOR 2004 HONDA ACCORD. "COMPONENT: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE SUMMARY: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE SEAT POSITION SENSOR (SPS) DETECTS THE DRIVER'S SEATING POSITION AND ADJUSTS THE AIR BAG INFLATION PRESSURE ACCORDINGLY. THE WIRING HARNESS FOR THE SPS WAS ATTACHED TO THE SEAT FRAME IN THE WRONG LOCATION AND MAY HAVE BEEN OVER TIGHTENED. THE SENSOR WIRE MAY BREAK AND CAUSE THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT TO BE ILLUMINATED, AND THE SPS TO FAIL.
