SEVERAL TIMES OVER PAST TWO WEEKS VEHICLE HAS STALLED UNEXPECTEDLY SHORTLY AFTER STARTING OR WHILE DRIVING - DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND GAUGES (INCLUDING ODOMETER) ALL BLANK EXCEPT 3 BLINKS OF GREEN "KEY" LIGHT (IMMOBILIZER INDICATOR); ACCESSORIES STAY OPERATIONAL (RADIO, ETC) BUT ENGINE SHUTS OFF. WILL RE-START AFTER A FEW TRIES, TYPICALLY; FAILED TRIES INCLUDE ENGINE STARTING WHILE KEY HELD IN START POSITION BUT DYING IMMEDIATELY WHEN RETURNING KEY TO "RUN" POSITION. WILL STAY RUNNING IF KEY IS HELD BETWEEN "START" AND "RUN" LOCATION. WHEN THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING, WAS ABLE TO SHIFT TO NEUTRAL WHILE COASTING AND RESTART THE ENGINE, HOLDING KEY NEAR START, TO GET ENOUGH RUNTIME TO GET THE CAR TO A SAFE PLACE OFF THE ROAD. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE PARKED, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR 30 MINUTES, IT WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 175,000.

DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITHOUT SPUTTERING OR OTHERWISE INDICATING A PROBLEM ALL GAUGES AND ENGINE CUTS OUT, I CAN PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND USUALLY IT WILL RESTART AND GO, BUT LATELY NOT ALL THE TIME. IT MAY TAKE GETTING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD PUTTING IT IN PARK AND RESTART 3 OR 4 TIMES AND THEN STAY RUNNING AND NOT HAVE A PROBLEM FOR A FEW DAYS. WHEN IT DOES THIS ON THE INTERSTATE TRAVELING AT 70 MPH WITH NO WARNING, THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS FOR THE PERSON BEHIND ME. WHEN IT STOPS RUNNING AND I LOSE POWER STEERING, BRAKES AND COASTING TRYING TO RESTART WHILE IN NEUTRAL PRAYING I DON'T GET HIT FROM BEHIND AS I NAVIGATE DECELERATING CUTTING ACROSS TRAFFIC TO THE SHOULDER. SCARY. CHANCES ARE MY AIRBAG WON'T WORK EITHER AT THIS CRITICAL TIME IF THE BRAKES FAIL TO STOP ME. ALL THE BUILT IN SAFETY FEATURES ARE NOT WORKING.

I AM OWED FROM HONDA REIMBURSEMENT FROM CARETENDER'S AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WORKING SHOP FOR DOING THE WIREHARNESS RECALL WHEN MY VEHICLE JUST STOPPED ALTOGETHER PLUS THE CAR RENTAL (AFTER I HAD BEEN TO HONDA DEALERSHIP WITH THE RECALL TO BE DONE A WHILE BEFORE IT HAPPENED) OF WHICH LONG TIME AGO I WROTE CERTIFIED MAIL TO THE OWNER OF HONDA IN CALIFORNIA AND ALSO FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSIONERS IN WASHINGTON, D.C.. TO THIS DATE, NO REFUND ISSUED TO ME. THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE RECALLS LISTED BY YOU REGARDING LOCKS/LATCHES/ETC. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE ENGINE JUST QUIT, CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER, POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKING, ETC.... FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO NURSE THE CAR TO A SPOT ALONG THE HIGHWAY TO PULL OVER. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR RESTARTED AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES, AND IT CONTINUED TO RUN FINE UNTIL I WAS EXITING THE FREEWAY, AND THE ENGINE QUIT AGAIN WHILE APPROACHING THE EXIT RAMP. I COASTED TO THE TOP OF THE EXIT RAMP AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR RESTARTED AT THE TOP OF THE EXIT RAMP AND DROVE HOME. I SUBSEQUENTLY TOOK THE CAR TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH.

ON AUGUST 9, 2010, OUR 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY EX STALLED WHILE WE WERE IDLING ON AN OPEN DRAWBRIDGE, ON HWY 42 IN STURGEON BAY, WI. THIS IS A TWO LANE BRIDGE, PROBABLY NEARLY A MILE LONG, WITH NO SHOULDER, SO WE WERE LOOKING AT A MAJOR TRAFFIC PROBLEM HAD WE NOT BEEN ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR ABOUT A MINUTE LATER AND DRIVE OFF THE BRIDGE. TWO DAYS LATER, AUGUST 11, THE CAR STALLED WHILE MOVING ON PORT WASHINGTON RD, IN GLENDALE, WI. AT THAT POINT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WENT DARK. THIS TIME, WE WERE ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP IN THE RIGHT LANE OF 4 LANE ROAD, AND WERE AGAIN ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR, THIS TIME WITHIN ABOUT 30 SECONDS. THE HONDA DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT TRACED THE PROBLEM TO THE ELECTRICAL PORTION OF THE IGNITION SWITCH AND REPLACED THE SWITCH. WE HAD THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM IN 2004, WITH THE ODYSSEY ONCE STALLING ON A BUSY FREEWAY AT 60 MPH IN THE CENTER LANE. AT THAT TIME THERE WAS RECALL IN EFFECT FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THE FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL NEEDS TO RENEWED FOR THIS PROBLEM AS THESE SWITCHES SEEM TO LAST ABOUT 5 YEARS AND THEN GO BAD AGAIN. 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE SPORADICALLY STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. SPEED WAS NOT A FACTOR AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. I CALLED THE DEALER IN REFERENCE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 02V120000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH) (ALSO HONDA SERVICE BULLETIN 02-031) AND THEY STATED THE RECALL WAS ALREADY DONE. I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. I CONTACTED HONDA CORPORATE (CASE# N032009-10-XXXXXXX) AND THEY STATED I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. CLEARLY THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE "IMPROVED" IGNITION SWITCH USED FOR THE RECALL; THE REPLACEMENT COST SHOULD BE COVERED BY HONDA. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT A COST OF $250, PLUS $110 TO RECONNECT THE AFTERMARKET REMOTE STARTER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 125,000. *TR
