TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, TRANSMISSION FAILED. FLUID EXITED TRANSMISSION AND "SMOKE" APPEARED AT REAR OF VEHICLE. DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND ESTIMATED REPAIR COSTS AT $2500-3500. SINCE WE WERE 1000 MILES FROM HOME AND DID NOT WANT TO PUT THAT MUCH INTO REPAIRS, WE BOUGHT A NEW CAR FROM THE DEALERSHIP. LATER FOUND OUT THIS TRANSMISSION FREQUENTLY FAILS UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES DUE TO LACK OF FLUID CIRCULATION. FLUID IS "BLOWN" OUT OF TRANSMISSION AND TO REAR OF CAR. I PAID $9,998.48 FOR MY ODYSSEY. I BOUGHT IT USED. I WAS TOLD THAT ALL THE MAINTENANCE WAS UP TO DATE AND THEY SHOWED ME THE PAPER WORK INDICATING THAT AS WELL. I ALSO TOOK THE VAN TO A SHOP TO BE SURE THAT ALL THE MAINTENANCE WAS UP TO DATE. I BOUGHT A 5YR/100,000 MILE WARRANTY FROM THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT THE VAN AS WELL, JUST TO BE SURE THAT IF ANYTHING WAS TO HAPPEN I WOULD BE COVERED. I PUT LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON MY VAN WHEN IT LEFT ME SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WITH MY THREE KIDS IN THE VAN ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN MY VAN STARTED ACTING CRAZY. I WAS DRIVING AND THE RPMS WOULD GO FROM 2 TO 5 AND THE VAN WOULD SLOW DOWN. IT KEPT DOING THIS, WHEN SUDDENLY I WAS AT A FULL STOP. I HAD THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE AND WAS PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL BUT THE ONLY THING THAT MOVED WAS THE RPMS. THE VAN WOULD NOT MOVE AT ALL.I HAVE ONLY HAD MY VAN FOR 2.5 YEARS. I KEEP ALL THE MAINTENANCE UP TO DATE AND TOOK VERY GOOD CARE OF MY VAN. NOW THIS VAN THAT I PAID DEARLY FOR IS SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY AND WILL NOT MOVE. I HAD IT TOWED TO A SHOP AND THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE DIAGNOSTICS INDICATED THAT MY TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE WARRANTY COMPANY THAT I PURCHASED MY WARRANTY THROUGH IS NOW SAYING THAT THEY WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF REPLACING MY TRANSMISSION. THERE IS SOMETHING VERY WRONG WITH THAT. PLEASE HAVE ONE OF YOUR INVESTIGATORS' TO LOOK INTO THIS: TAKE A LOOK ON THE INTERNET YOU WILL FIND THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ( ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF HONDA OWNERS', VANS & SEDANS ON THE ROAD WHO HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM OCCURRING) 2003 HONDA TRANSMISSION SLIPPING BETWEEN 2ND & 3RD GEARS - ALL THE OWNERS' COMPLAINTS ARE IDENTICAL. UNEXPECTEDLY, THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL ACCELERATION POWER, A VERY DANGEROUS & SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT, HAZARD AS THE DRIVER LOSES CONTROL OF THEIR VEHICLE & ACCELERATION. RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM OCCURRING IN OUR MODEL YEAR 2003 AND FROM MANY HONDA AND ACURA SEDAN OWNERS ARE ALSO EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM: ALL HAVE THE V-TECH ENGINE WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR THOUSANDS OF HONDA & ACURA DRIVERS ON THE ROAD -A MOTHER'S WITH A VAN FULL OF CHILDREN OR REALLY ANY DRIVER TRYING TO ACCELERATE ON A BUSY ROAD FROM A DEAD STOP. A DRIVER LOSES CONTROL OF THEIR VEHICLE SPEED UNEXPECTEDLY COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, EVEN DEATH. HONDA DEALERS ARE HITTING CUSTOMERS' FOR $4000.00 FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION INSTALL, REPLACING THE SAME MALFUNCTIONING ONE THAT WAS IN THE VEHICLE PREVIOUSLY, NOT REIMBURSING OWNERS' FOR THE VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR BILL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE PARKED IN FRONT OF THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ROLLED ACROSS THE ROAD AND COLLIDED WITH A FENCE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 147,112.

LIKE MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE 2003 ODYSSEY, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED A TRANSMISSION FAILURE. LIKE OTHERS, OUR VAN HAS HAD THE ORIGINAL RECALL NOTICE WORK PERFORMED (HONDA RECALL NUMBER 'P30' IN EARLY 2004, AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT), AND YET AT A RELATIVELY LOW 125,000 MILES THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT IN NOV '14, AS CONFIRMED BY A LOCAL HONDA DEALER. HONDA STATED THAT, SINCE THE PREVIOUS WORK HAS BEEN DONE UNDER RECALL, THEY ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY MORE WORK TO BE PERFORMED. MY COMPLAINT IS THIS: IF SO MANY OTHER '02-'04 ODYSSEY OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, IT IS OBVIOUS THAT HONDA DID NOT PROPERLY CORRECT THEIR EARLIER MISTAKE, AND THEY SHOULD PONY UP TO FIX THE TRANSMISSIONS, OR REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO ALREADY HAD THE WORK PERFORMED. VEHICLE TAKEN TO HONDA DEALER TO ADDRESS MULTIPLE SAFETY RECALLS, INCLUDING A RECALL TITLED, "2002-2004 ODYSSEY; 2003-2004 PILOT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION 2ND GEAR", THAT HAS BEEN LEFT UNADDRESSED FOR 11 YEARS. THE VEHICLE HAS A DOCUMENTED HISTORY (BY THE DEALER AND PERSONAL RECEIPTS) OF BEING SERVICED MULTIPLE TIMES DURING THAT PERIOD AT THE HONDA DEALER WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW (SINGLE OWNER). THE RECALL STATES MECHANICAL DEFECTS IN THE TRANSMISSION CAN CAUSE 2ND GEAR CHIPPING, AND, "GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCK-UP, AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING". I (ORIGINAL OWNER OF VEHICLE) WAS UNAWARE THE HONDA DEALER DID NOT ADDRESS THE RECALL UNTIL THIS YEAR, WHEN I USED THE HONDA OWNER WEBSITE TO LOOKUP OPEN RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. UPON LEARNING OF THE OPEN RECALL, AND THE SEVERITY OF THE POTENTIAL ISSUE, I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED THE DEALER FOR MAINTENANCE. ON 2014-07-18, THE DEALER CONFIRMED THE RECALL HAD NOT BEEN PERFORMED, THEN INFORMED ME THEY ARE UNABLE TO PERFORM THE RECALL. I OPENED A CASE WITH HONDA AMERICA, WHO OVER THE COURSE OF 4 WEEKS, FIRST INDICATED THAT THE ISSUE I DESCRIBED (SINCE OWNING THE VEHICLE, SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR WOULD "STUTTER") WAS NOT RELATED, THEREFORE THE RECALL WOULD NOT BE PERFORMED. I REPLIED THE RECALL IS NOT CONDITIONAL TO THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCE, AND MUST BE PERFORMED. HONDA AMERICA THEN REPLIED THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN REPLACED, AND WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. AFTER MORE THAN A WEEK, THE DEALER AGREED TO PROVIDE THE SERIAL NUMBER OF THE TRANSMISSION, CONFIRMING IT WAS THE ORIGINAL HONDA PART. MOST RECENTLY, HONDA AMERICA CLAIMS THAT AN INSPECTION PORT ON THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN ALTERED, AND THEREFORE THE RECALL IS NOT APPLICABLE. I HAVE 11 YEARS OF RECORDS WITH THE DEALER (EXCLUSIVE PROVIDER OF MAINTENANCE TO THE VEHICLE), AND NONE INDICATE RECALL OR MODIFICATION PERFORMED. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY, THE TCS AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON, THE TRANSMISSION DOWN SHIFT TO LOWER GEAR ABRUPTLY. THE CAR BEHIND ALMOST HIT MY CAR. IT WAS A SCARY SITUATION. AFTER CHECKING THE CODES, IT SHOWED P0730 AND P0780 RELATED TO SHIFT SOLENOID. AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE WEB WITH THE SAME TRANSMISSION PROBLEM DUE TO FAULT MATERIAL CLOGGING THE FILTER INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION. DEAR SIR/MADAM: I AM AN ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY, AND ONE OF MANY VICTIMS OF HONDA TRANSMISSION FAULTY TRANSMISSION. A TRANSMISSION RECALL WAS PERFORMED AT 20, 398 MILES IN JULY 2004. IN THAT RECALL, HONDA STATED THAT CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTER SHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS. THAT COULD LEAD TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR, IN VERY RARE CASES, GEAR BREAKAGE. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE TRANSMISSION COULD LOCK UP, INCREASING THE CHANCE OF A CRASH. INSTEAD OF REPLACE THE FAULTY TRANSMISSION THAT WAS ORIGINALLY INSTALLED ON MY ODYSSEY, A HONDA DEALER INSTALLED A LINE JET KIT TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL LUBRICATION TO THE GEARS. IN JUNE 2014, MY VAN STARTED TO SHOW SIGNS OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 93,128 MILES. THE SECOND GEAR IS VERY HARD TO SHIFT AND SLIPPED EVEN LOCKED FROM TIME TO TIME. IN TWO OF THE CASES, A REAR COLLISION ALMOST OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. AFTER I CONSULTED TWO HONDA DEALERSHIPS AND WAS TOLD A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT IS NEEDED. I PAID $3,000 TO REPLACE THE FAULTY TRANSMISSION OUT OF MY OWN POCKET. HONDA DENIED THE RESPONSIBILITY, BUT ONLY OFFERED 25% FOR THE TOTAL REPLACEMENT COST OF NEARLY $6,000. I BELIEVE THAT HONDA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FAULTY TRANSMISSION AND THE 2004 TRANSMISSION RECALL DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I REQUEST N.H.T.S.A. INVESTIGATE WHETHER HONDA'S 2004 RECALL IS A TEMPORARY FIX OF THE PROBLEM AND STILL PUT THE DRIVER AT RISK, AND WHETHER THE RECALL HAVE SOLVED A SAFETY PROBLEM. I AM VERY SURE THAT I AM ONE OF HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS VICTIM OF HONDA FAULTY TRANSMISSION. PLEASE START THE INVESTIGATION FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND HEALTH CONCERNS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

STARTED EXPERIENCING BUCKING AND STALLING. THE "D" LIGHT FLASHED, AND MULTIPLE LIGHTS CAME ON. WHILE DRIVING, THE UNIT WILL CONTINUE TO JUMP, ESPECIALLY ON THE DOWNSHIFT. WHEN ACCELERATING FROM FIRST GEAR TO SECOND GEAR AT APPROXIMATELY 10-20 MPH THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO HESITATE THAN JUMP INTO THIRD GEAR.THE DISTANCE FROM STORE TO HOME IS 3 MILES WITH NUMEROUS STOP LIGHTS. DURING THIS STOP AND GO TRIP IT HAPPENED 3 TIMES. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE FACILITY WHERE I TAKE MY VEHICLES FOR SERVICE. THE DIAGNOSIS CAME BACK THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS FAILING AND IT NEEDED TO BE REBUILT. ESTIMATED COST IS $3000-$4000. THIS VEHICLE WAS RECALLED IN 2004 FOR IT'S TRANSMISSION, IT HAS LESS THAN 15000 MILES. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FIX WAS BY FREEWAY HONDA IN SANTA ANA, CA. TODAY IT IS 96500 MILES. SUBMISSION FROM CONSTITUENT RE RECALL 04-021:C "AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION RECALL FOR HONDA ODYSSEY 2003" (FULL DOCUMENT NOT IMAGED). *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED ACCORDING TO AN EMISSION TESTING CENTER, THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION, THE COMPUTER GAVE TWO CODES, P0730 AND P1750. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED, THE TRANSMISSION RECALL, WAS PERFORMED ON HER VEHICLE IN THE PAST. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM HAS SINCE RETURNED. *JB

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A COMPLETE STOP, THE TRANSMISSION RESPONDED EXTREMELY SLOW WITH SEVERE HESITATION. THE RPMS BEGAN TO INCREASE RAPIDLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHO RECOMMENDED THAT THE TRANSMISSION BE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL RELATED TO THE FAILURE ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V176000 (POWER TRAIN). THE VIN WAS ELIGIBLE UNDER THE RECALL BUT THE DEALER WOULD NOT HONOR THE RECALL BECAUSE THE SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE TRANSMISSION WERE NOT BURNT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

AT LOWER SPEEDS AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION GOES INTO NEUTRAL. THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT REENGAGE UNLESS YOU PLACE THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL AND BACK INTO DRIVE. UNFORTUNATELY THIS HAPPENS DURING PERIODS FROM COMPLETELY STOPPED THRU 2ND GEAR. ONCE PAST 2ND GEAR SHIFTING PATTERNS ARE ALWAYS NORMAL. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR OVER A YEAR, YET THE TRANSMISSION STILL CONTINUES TO OPERATE, (IE..NOT COMPLETELY FAILED YET) I HAVE NOTICED THAT THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON MY PARTICULAR MODEL (RECALL# 12V-573) HOWEVER MY DEALER SAYS THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT PART OF THAT RECALL. I FEEL SINCE THIS IS A DAILY DRIVER, THAT THE MALFUNCTION OF TRANSMISSION WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT HAPPENS DURING INITIAL ACCELERATION. I BELIEVE THAT IF THIS WAS NOT A DEFECT, THEN THE TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE COMPLETELY FAILED LONG AGO. I MERELY THINK HONDA SHOULD MAKE CORRECTIONS AS STATED IN THEIR RECALL NOTICES. *TR

112,000 MILES ODYSSEY EX TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING 4/18/14 AND VAN COULD NOT GO FROM TRAFFIC LIGHT. AFTER COOLING, WAS ABLE TO DRIVE A LITTLE TO GET OFF THE MAIN ROAD. CALLED FOR TOW TRUCK TO A-1 TRANSMISSIONS IN HAWTHORNE, CA. I HAVE AVOIDED DEALER SERVICING SINCE BUYING THE VAN NEW IN 2003. I INSTALLED A MAGNAFINE FILTER IN THE TRANS COOLING LINE AND CHANGED IT THREE TIMES. I DRAINED AND FILLED THE TRANS MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS WITH HONDA FLUID AND KEPT TRANSMISSION FLUID CLEAN. I HAD THE HONDA RECALL LUBRICATING TRANNY GEAR DONE AS WELL AS ANY OTHER HONDA RECALLS BUT NO OTHER TRANSMISSION RECALL. NO PREVIOUS TRANSMISSION ISSUES UNTIL THE OTHER DAY. I DIDN'T TRY TO GET ATTENTION FROM DEALER BECAUSE EVEN WITH 25% OFF IT WOULD STILL BE A COUPLE OF THOUSAND DOLLARS TO THEM. THIS MODEL HONDA HAS A HISTORY OF FAILED TRANSMISSIONS. *TR
