Hello - On [XXX], while travelling to visit family for the Christmas Holiday, a warning about a transmission system error came on. We pulled over, check fluids, looked the vehicle over, added approved coolant which appeared a little low. When we started our van, all the lights were off, and we were able to reach our destination without incident. On [XXX], all fluids were checked prior to leaving to return home and we began our journey home. About 20 minutes out from our destination, our transmission warning light came on once again. We were able to make it home. We contacted the dealership and dropped it off immediately on Monday morning only to find out that the transmission needed to be completely replaced. We obtained a second opinion with a local transmission shop who then proceeded to tell us that this was a known issue with this year of Honda Transmissions and that there are some well documented issues with this particular transmission and that this was unfortunately not the first case they had seen. We purchased our 2019 Honda Odyssey from O'Daniel Honda in Omaha, Nebraska through the Costco Auto Program in August 2019. We have regularly maintenance done on this vehicle as recommended at another local dealership closer to our home. At present time, my [XXX] Honda Odyssey with barely 100,000 miles on it now sits in a transmission shop awaiting a full transmission replacement. We bought this vehicle in the security and knowledge that it would be a solid, reliable vehicle for our growing family at the time with the reputation for exceeding 250,000 miles when properly maintained. For this transmission issue to be so well documented and known and for Honda to completely turn a blind eye to this and not stand behind their workmanship is absolutely appalling. The transmission in my 2019 Honda Odyssey failed prematurely at approximately 102,800 miles, requiring a full transmission repair/replacement. Prior to failure, the vehicle exhibited known warning symptoms including harsh and erratic shifting, hesitation, delayed engagement, and loss of smooth acceleration. These symptoms progressively worsened and ultimately resulted in unsafe drivability. This failure is consistent with a well-documented pattern of transmission defects affecting 2018–2019 Honda Odyssey models. Numerous owners have reported similar issues through NHTSA complaints and Honda service channels. A transmission failure at this mileage is not consistent with reasonable consumer expectations for a modern vehicle and presents a safety concern due to unpredictable shifting behavior, hesitation during acceleration, and loss of drivability. These issues increase the risk of collision, particularly when merging, accelerating from stops, or driving in traffic. Honda has declined assistance solely on the basis that the vehicle is outside the powertrain warranty, despite the failure aligning with known defect patterns rather than normal wear and tear. I am submitting this complaint to document a recurring defect and request further investigation into premature transmission failures in this model year. After receiving a replacement transmission in my 2019 Honda Odyssey, the vehicle continues to experience the same failure symptoms: harsh shifting, delayed engagement, and intermittent slipping. These ongoing issues indicate that the replacement transmission did not fully correct the underlying defect, which is consistent with other complaints submitted to NHTSA regarding 2018–2019 Odyssey models. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this recurring defect and track the persistent issues associated with replacement transmissions in this model year.

While Driving Pressing on the gas pedal I got a minute of no acceleration, it felt like the van stopped on me, and then I start pressing on the gas pedal harder but nothing happens and then it shoots forward like a jet, this happened a few times, very dangerous, could have got hit from behind from oncoming traffic behind me since the van just slowed down so much, then shooting forward was also scary. I did take it to a mechanic in the past and they couldnt figiure out what was wrong. the transmission light went on last week and the van didnt drive, I had to tow it to two different mechanics, both letting me know that I had to replace the transmission on my van, this is only a 2019 and only has 74,000 miles on it, this shouldnt happen.

Transmission stops producing power and has delayed acceleration. Almost caused an accident and possibly fatalities.

Type: Vehicle, Vehicle: 2019 HONDA ODYSSEY, Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
Incident: Jan 2026
Jan 2026

The vehicle experienced a sudden internal transmission failure (power train). While driving, the vehicle began making grinding noises during acceleration and lost propulsion. The vehicle then displayed multiple warning indicators, including a transmission warning and a blinking electric parking brake indicator. After stopping, the vehicle would not engage Drive and became inoperable, requiring towing. The transmission remains available for inspection at the dealership. This failure created a safety risk due to loss of propulsion and inability to move the vehicle under its own power, including the risk of being stranded in traffic or unable to safely clear a roadway. The problem was confirmed by an authorized Honda dealership, which diagnosed an internal transmission failure and recommended full transmission replacement. No prior transmission repairs had been performed by outside shops. The vehicle has been inspected by an authorized Honda dealership. The manufacturer has not physically inspected the vehicle beyond dealership diagnosis. Warning symptoms included intermittent grinding during acceleration and loss of power shortly before complete failure. Warning messages and indicators appeared at the time of failure.

When trying to accelerate from slow/ stopped, the car struggles to get into gear. I have on numerous occasions been merging or getting onto another road from a stop sign and the vehicle will start to go just slightly and then stall before suddenly jumping into gear. It has caused me to stall in front of oncoming vehicles even though im careful to not go unless there is Noone within a long distance from me. I have taken it to the dealership and there are no codes for transmission or any other issues. Im not sure what the issue is but it is very unsettling.

Vehicle has hard shifting up and down. Loud clank when up shifting or down shifting at random times.

Vehicle jerks at about 25mph when it’s idled in 1-2rpm. Sometime at acceleration and won’t move up rpm. Vehicle got fuel injectors and transmission fluid replaced and still have issues. Vehicle in shop now with less then 2,000k before power train warranty up even though I’ve been dealing with it for over a year. Dealer said transmission fluid was down quart 4 months after they changed the transmission fluid. They were able to replicate jerk but couldn’t replicate sound of something clicking over while idle. I have it on video. I think since Honda never fixed the issue in the first place it caused additional damage and all the want to do is add more fluid and call it a day.

Ever since we bought the car, the car has hesitated when we step on the gas pedal. It will then jerk forward, which makes it difficult to merge into traffic. There is a safety concern as it is unpredictable about when it will happen and when the car will start to go.

Delayed transmission engagement when accelerating from a stopped position. When the accelerator is depressed the transmission hesitates and does not shift for a few seconds. This is very unsafe when trying accelerate into traffic or cross roads. This has been an on going issue with this transmission.

We have had issues with the transmission multiple times. After coming to a stop, rolling forward, and then pressing the accelerator the vehicle hesitates and won't immediately move forward. It will suddenly engage, often squealing the tires and jerk into forward motion. This puts us and others at risk because it causes a delay in pulling into traffic and has made for close calls with oncoming traffic. We took the vehicle to a local shop and they also noticed the issue with the transmission. We took the vehicle to a Honda dealership for service and while they stated that they could not duplicate the issue, there was a software update that they completed and stated that they thought it would take care of the issue. We are still having the issue and plan to take the vehicle back to the dealer for more investigation. We have not had any warning lamps or other messages. Upon researching this, there are class action lawsuits in the works related to this issue on 9 speed transmissions used in various Honda models during this timeframe. Honda has not recalled or extended warranties to cover these issues. It looks like Honda has sent technical service bulletins to nationwide dealers acknowleding the issue but has failed to find a fix for the problem. As in our case, Honda has done software updates which may mask the issue. Below it asks for the date that the incident occurred - This occurs at least weekly, sometimes more frequently.

Does not accelerate on the highway/freeway. Took it to dealer shop, several times over the years. First 2-3 years, they say they did not find any issues. Last year, they said it was transmission issue. We took it to other repair shop, he said it was computer system failure.

Currently own a honda odyssey 2019. The transmission is unstable at times. From a speed of 25-30mph, it performs hard shifts i think from the 3rd gear. We can really feel the jerk of the van along with a sound like metals slipping or something. It doesn't always happen therefore the dealer could not fully diagnose it and called it normal or wait for it to get worse. Yeah right!

Over the course of the 38 months that we have owned the vehicle, random transmission slippage has been present on this 2019 Odyssey. I mentioned the slippage to the service advisors at the dealership when taking the vehicle in for oil changes. The technician was “not able to replicate the problem.” The slippage was always a safety concern. The van is highly unpredictable on acceleration, making it dangerous to try to pull into traffic, for example, since the driver never knows whether the van will accelerate on demand or not. Other times, the engagement will occur gradually, causing the van to accelerate sloooooowly, despite the driver having significant throttle applied. The display now reads “Transmission System Problem” and WILL NOT shift out of park. I had it towed to the local auto repair shop to be diagnosed. The transmission needs replaced.

The van had 75k miles and would lose propulsion on the highway with no warning and no dash light coming on. van would slow way down causing other drivers to hard brake behind us, Then finally go back into gear and drive like nothing happened, couple days later the same thing would happen. We took it to Honda and said the transmission will need to be replaced.

The transmission on this van has acceleration issues. When trying to accelerate the van will on occasion have hesitation of a few seconds. This has left me in situations when merging where I have almost been hit. The acceleration at times is not responsive. I’ve noticed it when trying to apply urgent acceleration, such as trying to cross an intersection, and when I accelerate a little, let off the gas, and accelerate again. A Google search finds many people with the same issue. This is a major safety concern since the van does not apply acceleration when expected and can leave a person vulnerable to being hit. This has been happening to me for years but I didn’t know I could report this. Happened today.

Honda Odyssey 2019 slips during highway speed and has no acceleration while the engines rpm goes up. Very dangerous at highway speed and then will have a large clank noise and go into gear. Honda doesn't acknowledge the issue with their 9 speed transmission but their are tons of complaints on the web with the same issue I have. It happens at lower speed too at stop lights and is a safety concern for me when my wife is driving out children around.

Prior to this recall, we had noticed an acceleration issue with the car. One day, during our travels, we encountered a severe stall, which could have been a dangerous event. Just as we were grappling with this situation, news of a recall reached us, but unfortunately, the fuel pump required for the fix was unavailable. It was only when the HondaLink app suggested that the dealer could replace the fuel pump that we found a glimmer of hope. Immediately, I secured a reservation for March 15th, 2024. However, upon reaching the dealership, we were informed that the required part was not in stock. Frustrated, I lodged a complaint with Honda, outlining our predicament. Today, on April 4th, 2024, I received a response from them, stating that they would address the issue once the part became available. However, this leaves me in a precarious position. Who will be held accountable if an accident were to occur due to this fault? Neither Honda nor the dealer seems willing to shoulder responsibility. Certainly: In their response, Honda has essentially washed their hands of the matter, stating that it is up to me to pursue further action. They suggested that I could either escalate the issue with the NHTSA or explore legal avenues. Despite this, they have chosen to close my query, leaving me feeling abandoned and unsupported in this ordeal. Feeling increasingly uneasy about driving a car with a known faulty component, I am left with no choice but to consider reporting this matter to the NHTSA for serious intervention. I implore Honda to take decisive action, whether it involves replacing the vehicle or compensating for the trauma we've endured during this time. Each time I get behind the wheel of this car, I am acutely aware of the risk posed by the defective fuel pump. It is imperative that this issue is addressed promptly and responsibly.

The transmission slips or doesn't engage appropriately. The van lurches forward at intersections and slips, pauses with a loud clunking noise at lower gears when driving in town. This morning, I attempted to cross a double highway...pressed the accelerator, nothing happened, then the vehicle lurched forward, stopped again, then lurched forward again all with the accelerator pressed down. I was almost hit broadside while crossing the highway. This is not the first time this has occurred. Multiple people in our household drive this vehicle and all have reported the same concern. I've asked about this every time I get routine maintenance but Honda dealership says it's working as designed and they've witnessed this issue in other customer reports. This is a significant safety risk!

Vehicle will "neutral out" on acceleration and make a whizzing noise. This occurs every time we drive this vehicle. It loses a great deal of power when this happens and feels like it is never going to regain speed. Finally, after 5-10 seconds it goes back it to gear but not before you almost get rear ended
