I am having issues with crackling and popping noises in my stereo system. I know that this is a common issue. I understand that there may be a recall.
When driving my 2016 Honda Pilot Touring and forgetting to turn off the auto idle my car will completely shut off and not turn on. This has happened a total of 3 times since owning my car. All three have occurred at a red light intersection. I’m grateful nobody has rear ended me in these occurrences. It seems when the car tries to start the engine, all the dashboard lights light up and we get the messages lane departure mitigation or brake problem and the car stalls. The first occurrence happened in October of 2020 and we had to jumpstart the battery. This happened on a short 15 mile trip. We replaced the battery at that time. The 2nd and 3rd time was this past week of January 2, 2023 when driving a long distance trip 500-1000 miles. Luckily the car started back up since we were on a trip and did not have family or friends in the area.
The rear view camera doesn’t always work on the display on the dash. When we put it in reverse the screen shows black instead of what is behind our vehicle. This issue is intermittent.
While traveling from northern Illinois to Sarasota, FL, vehicle transmission stopped functioning along I-75 near Tifton, GA. It had been raining the entire trip. No one was injured. We were passing a vehicle in the left lane, and without any warning the transmission just stopped. We couldn’t accelerate. We coasted to the shoulder. We couldn’t put the vehicle into park. 2 warning lights/messages came up: emissions system failure and AWD system failure. We turned off the car, waited 10 minutes, then drove to the nearest exit and turned off the car for an additional 45 minutes. The Honda Dealership in Sarasota said it needed a software upgrade. After paying for the upgrade we learned from a previous Honda engineer that it’s a known problem.
The auto start on vehicle is defective. When sitting at red light the vehicle shuts off and the when you go to excelerate the car stalls. I have taken to 2 Honda dealers and have been told that your agency is investigating problem. This has happened repeatedly and the dealer doesn’t have fix. Does it take someone getting hurt for Honda to address issue.
Unless I remember to disable "Auto engine idle stop" my car will die at a light or any place I'm stopped. A bunch of random lights or warnings flash across the dashboard , brake won't push in, and I am unable to put it in neutral for my vehicle to be moved off the road or interstate. I have had cops park behind my completely dead vehicle stating "I just want to make sure the other cars on the road stay off your back so you don't get hit" all while we figure out why we can't even put it in neutral just to move it. We then have to jump-start it to get it moving again with no promises it will either start or stay on once started. Because this has happened multiple times, my vehicle has now been having issues starting at random, once happening the afternoon of 4/16/2023 after it wasn't driven the day before. My battery and alternator have both been checked and are excellent condition.
Auto idle stop randomly fails to restart engine when attempting to accelerate from stop. After coming to a stop and the idle stop feature engages, the vehicle may not restart. While in heavy traffic on interstates the failure to restart creates panic. Car stalls to neutral. Car must be turned off and restarted and then shifted to drive in order to accelerate. Same at traffic lights, or turn lanes, on hills, a sudden shut down requiring a complete restart. There are several steps required to get the vehicle to restart. This takes several seconds (enough time that traffic lights cycle). This results in following vehicles attempting to pass if a lane is available, angry motorists, and panicked driver. Car has been inspected by dealer but there is no fix for the problem. There are no warning lights or indicators that the system will or is about to fail. The problem apparently does not create any kind of “code” in the system. The only solution is to turn the system off each and every time you start the vehicle. The system cannot be legally disabled and by default it is always on when vehicle is started. This problem began approximately 18 months ago when the vehicle had @ 90k miles. Honda recently announced a software update and a warranty extension regarding the problem. The software update has been completed on the vehicle. However the problem continues. Honda’s apparent solution is to extend the warranty on the parts involved - the starter, or starter relays, or adjust the valves on the engine. But there is no “fix” for the problem. We are told to simply “continue to monitor”.
the auto idle stop stalls and does not restart when you press the accelerator. I have been caught stalled in the middle of intersections too many times to count. Well over 100. It is extremely dangerous in city traffic. Other drivers behind me are honking horns and it takes a while to restart the car.I have narrowly avoided a serious accident at least 25 times. The dealer has been told about the problem numerous times and is aware of this happening with other people with the same car. They check it out and say that nothing is wrong but then it will stall again on the way home from the dealership. You have no warning when this is about to happen.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The liftgate malfunctioned. it is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I opened the liftgate for my wife and it closed while she was trying to take something from the back. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? It has not been confirmed by a dealer or anyone else. it happens sporatically. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The car makes a loud beeping noise when closing. It first happened on December 4, 2022. and it has happened a few times since then including yesterday.
The stop/start system will fail to restart the engine and stall the vehicle. This is the system that is designed to shut the engine off when at stop lights in order to save fuel. There are times when the engine will stall when it attempts to start the engine again. This does not happen all the time but has happened frequently enough that my wife and I have both stalled at the same intersection. You can turn off the stop/start feature each time you get in the car but we do not always remember. When it does stall all the lights on the dash flash and it's normally a frantic moment of trying to restart the car while cars behind you are honking. So far we have been able to restart it each time but I'm concerned this won't always be the case. We've taken this in to Honda and they don't have a solution or even really seem to acknowledge it. This is also a safety issue since my wife is working at various hospitals and some are in higher crime areas. I do not want her to stall there. I also don't want someone to hit us if they try to go when the light is green and we are stuck in front of them. There should at least be a permanent override of the system so we don't have to remember to turn it off each time we are in the car. That could completely solve the issue.
All warning lights turned on during a normal drive. The dealer said it is a harness issue and needs to replace the harness to fix the issue. Surprised that a part that does not move had to be replaced. It has happened a couple of times before.
stop-start fuel saving system don't work properly.
Auto idle stop malfunctions regularly without any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms before the malfunction. This causes the vehicle to restart automatically or it requires the driver to restart the vehicle manually. An error message appears on the console screen for less than one second at the time of the problem, but no warning or error messages before or after. This presents a safety issue (i.e., risk of collision) to the driver and other passengers when attempting to accelerate when a traffic light turns green, proceeding after a stop sign , or turning left in front of oncoming vehicles. Service technicians at multiple Honda service centers have reproduced the problem, with the only solution being to replace the battery on two separate occasions (Jan-2020 and Sep-2022). However, the issue pre-dates Jan-2020 but the Honda service center did not perform any repairs after the diagnostic scans.
My car often does not start back up at stop signs/traffic lights. I feel very much in danger. It is difficult to get my car to start back up after it fails to start back up. I usually have to press really hard on the brake and even this is difficult to get it to restart. This is supposed to save fuel but I’m so afraid that someone is going to crash into me and put us all in harms way. Please help!
When you start the car it is always in economy mode so that the engine can shut off when you are stopped. I like to turn this feature off manually as a few times if I don’t the car has stalled and also goes into neutral. Happened while I was on California highway 80 in stop and go traffic which was pretty scary as I was in the center lane. This was about two months ago. It happens about 10% of the time when I am in this mode if not completely stalling it splutters and feels like it won’t start or delays to restart. Happened yesterday at a light. Became a safety issue as cars tried to go around me by getting into the next lane which was flowing freely. Basically if I don’t turn the function off when I first start the car it is not safe. The dealer took a look about a year ago and found nothing and said they had not heard of the issue. I pointed out I had read about the issue in Honda forums they could find them easily it however they had no interest, maybe because they focus on known issues? Love the car apart from this issue.
My 2016 Honda Pilot is displaying a "Keyless Start System Problem". There is a Service Bulletin 20-117 that extends the warranty for affected vehicles so they can be repaired under the warranty for free. The Service Bulletin states that ALL Trim levels are affected vehicles, however, my vin #[XXX], does not come up as an affected vehicle. My vehicle needs to be included in and covered by the Service Bulletin 20-117, which will extend the warranty so I can have my vehicle repaired. Please address at your earliest convenience. Thank you. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
On multiple occasions when the auto idle engages the car stalls. The dashboard looks like the car is running by its not. In order for me to be able to drive it I have to put it in park, turn it all the way off, and then restart. This has happened at dangerous intersections where I’ve almost been in an accident. I read that it’s a known problem but Honda isn’t doing anything about it The last time it happened is noted below
After turning a corner vehicle turned off, in the middle of the road, stated put in park and press engine start button, had to press 2x for the car to start
My vehicle is equipped with with an Automatic Engine shutoff. The vehicle shuts off at traffic lights and then fails to turn back on. I have contacted Honda but only told that there is not currently a recall and it would cost 200$ for a diagnostic test to be ran and if they don’t find the problem I am still responsible for the 200$ charge.
While stopped at a stop light the car totally shuts off when you go to start to move again causing you to have to put the car in park. Then start the car back up a begin to drive. This has happened 8 times now. There are no warning lights. The engine just seems to shut totally off in mind stream. What am I supposed to do with this issue that causes this to happen.
The engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the Auto Start/Stop function engaged, It have happened many times. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer for assessment and they keep telling me that it is due to all the electronics going on at the same time
I have a Honda Pilot 2016 with a keyless start system issue. I see a recall document Service Bulletin 20-117 dated December 9, 2020; however, when I type my VIN number for my vehicle, I do not see a recall. I have been having the Keyless start system issue for the past 3 days.
The idle stop on the car is defective, if not turned off which had to be turned off everytime we start the car, The car will randomly idle stop at intersections and won't come back on, will have to forcefully turn off the car and turn it back on. Couple this happened on dangerous intersection and traffic lights. Honda has not resolution, they just say turn off idle stop everytime.
Auto Engine Idle Stop has failed to restart the vehicle in multiple situations, including at traffic lights and in stop and go traffic. Inspection is available upon request. When a trafic light turns green and I have tried to proceed the vehicle stalls and will not restart quickly, the cars behind me are surprised and not happy when I have to go through a procedure to get the car to restart. I have almost been hit by cars behind me several times as they expected me to go when the light turns green. Sometimes my vehicle will not restart for a minute or more. This could be a major issue if you were in traffic and ended up stuck in a place where you should not stop or stall. One time I had to call AAA to get my vehicle to start. They had to disconnect my battery and reattach so the system would reset itself. Only then would the vehicle start. The dealer said they have heard from other owners of Honda Pilots that they want this auto engine idle stop permanently turned off. But they told me they can’t turn it off. This should auto engine idle stop should be something you opt into not have to opt out every time you start your vehicle. There weren’t any lights or warnings that this system would fail ahead of time.
I was driving with the intention to turn left at a major intersection. I was the first car to pull into the left hand turning lane. I put my blinker on and pushed down on the brake waiting for the light to turn green so I could make the left hand turn but the car just shut down. At first I thought it was the auto engine on/off feature but I tried to lift my foot off the brake and the car did not restart. I tried to put the car in park and turn the car completely off (then on again) to see if that fixed the issue but the brake pedal was completely locked and I could not push it down. I ended up having to call the police and a tow company to tow my car out of the intersection. Both the police and the tow company tried to start the car with no luck. They could not even start it to put it in neutral and had to flat bed the car. There were not warning lights or messages on when this occurred. Although no one was hurt, it was an extremely busy intersection where this occurred and I was with my 4 year old daughter. While waiting for the police I had to cross multiple lanes of traffic carrying my daughter because it didn't want someone to rear end my car with her in it. It was also during the start of rush hour and caused a huge traffic back up. My car was subsequently towed to the Honda dealership where I purchased the car and they were able to start it the next morning multiple times with no issue. When they checked for error codes, nothing popped up. The battery was tested with good results. They requested other services be performed: brake system service, fuel system service, etc. but I was told these were unrelated to the break down. I ended spending close to $400 in towing fees and over $800 these additional services. I saw there was an official investigation into the Honda Pilot's start/stop feature and I believe this sounds very similar to what I went through.
