2018 Honda Ridgeline FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I went to fill my vehicle with gasoline on 02/06/2025. The 2018 Honda Ridgeline has a capless fuel system to enter fuel into the vehicle and there are two flaps that the gasoline nozzle is required to open. It repeatedly attempted to insert the nozzle and the first flap would not move. I pushed harder, and the first flap broke. I still could not insert the nozzle to get gasoline into my vehicle. I then observed a block of ice preventing the nozzle from accessing the second flap. I could not remove the ice to put gas in my vehicle. On 02/07/2025, the temperature rose above freezing and I was able to mop out the water from the area, however my capless system was broken at this time. I brought it to the local Honda dealership and they were able to repair the damaged component, however charged me for this repair as they contended there were no recalls on this issue and the vehicle is out of warranty. I went on the internet and found in several consumer forums that people have cited this to be an issue with the Ridgeline and other Honda vehicles. I am unclear how Honda could manufacture a vehicle component that allows water to collect at the entrance to the gas tank which could cause a myriad of engine issues as well as the ice issue which would prevent being able to put gasoline in the vehicle.

The fuel pump recall was issued in December 2023 and it still hasn't been repaired. It is almost a year later and when I have tried to contact the dealer and the company about the status of the recall, I don't get a response.

Honda recall on fuel pump from February 2024 has not been corrected due to Honda failing to supply part to local dealer for repair. I have concerns of the fuel pump failing while driving and have made multiple calls to Honda asking for the repair. Honda reply is that when the part is available they will notify. Six months is a long time to wait on a defect that could have serious consequence.

After a recent Fuel Injector service last week, there is a strong smell of gasoline both in and out of my vehicle. Honda Service technicians report they cannot find the issue and there are no Codes reported upon diagnostic check. However the smell remains and fuel gage needle falls closer to E when the vehicle is parked a few days.

Unknown: Fuel pump problem. Engine stalls and slow down to dangerous speed on highway speed limit. Dealer unable to get fuel pump to fix this problem. Claim back order is the problem. On going problem for 10 plus days. Service advisor said truck can be driven. Still waiting on fuel pump.

The cap-less fuel system accumulates water and can freeze. I have no way of adding fuel to my vehicle until the weather warms up or I find a way to break the ice up

IN FREEZING WEATHER I AM UNABLE TO REFUEL MY 2018 RIDGELINE BECAUSE THE FUEL NOZZLE WILL NOT INSERT INTO THE FILLER NECK DUE TO ICE BUILD UP IN THE CAP-LESS FUEL SHUTTER IN THE FILLER NECK. I HAVE CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA AND MY LOCAL AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. HONDA HAS REFUSED TO MAKE REPAIRS ON THIS VEHICLE. THIS OCCURS ANYTIME THERE IS MOISTURE IN THE CAP-LESS FUEL FILLER APPARENTLY BECAUSE THE FUEL DOOR DOES NOT KEEP MOISTURE AND WATER OUT. THERE IS NO WAY OF KNOWING WHEN MOISTURE OR WATER IS PRESENT UNTIL IT IS TIME TO REFUEL AND THE CAP-LESS FUEL CAP IS FROZEN SHUT. EVEN WITH A T.S.B. WRITTEN BY AMERICAN HONDA AND RECOGNIZED BY THE N.H.T.S.A. HONDA HAS REFUSED REPAIR AND DEALERSHIP HAS REFUSED TO PROVIDE PRINTED DOCUMENTATION OF THIS PROBLEM. WITHOUT INDOOR (GARAGE) STORAGE HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO MELT ICE BUILD-UP IN THE FUEL FILLER NECK? HONDA RIDGELINE OWNERS NEED RELIEF FROM AMERICAN HONDA.

ICE BUILD-UP IN FUEL FILL NECK CAUSING INABILITY TO REFUEL. ICE FORMS ON FLAP INSIDE FILL NECK PREVENTING INTRODUCTION OF FUEL FILL NOZZLE.

WATER GETS IN BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND FLAP OF THE CAPLESS FUEL FILLER NECK AND FREEZES. THIS HAPPENS WHEN IT IS RAINING AND THE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW FREEZING. IF THE TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE FREEZING THE WATER JUST SITS BETWEEN THE TWO FLAPS. I DON'T KNOW WHEN (STATIONARY, IN MOTION, TURNING ETC) IT IS GETTING IN THERE. IT HAPPENS WHEN IT IS RAINING.

DURING ACCELERATION VEHICLE LOSES POWER FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. INTERMITTENT FAILURE WHILE MERGING ONTO HIGH-SPEED HIGHWAY.

THE CAPLESS GAS FILL SYSTEM ALLOWS WATER TO GET IN THE FILL NECK. THE WATER CAN THEN FREEZE AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT A FUEL NOZZLE INTO THE VEHICLE. THE ONLY WAY TO TEMPORARILY CORRECT THE ISSUE IS TO MELT THE ICE.

CAPLESS FUEL FILLER DEFECT. WATER GETS IN CHAMBER AND IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES, DRAINAGE HOLES GET PLUGGED WITH ICE AND SUBSEQUENT WATER ENTERS, BUILDS UP, CREATES BLOCKAGE AND PREVENTS FLAP FROM OPENING AND VEHICLE CANNOT BE GASSED UP. NOT BEING ABLE TO PUT GAS IN VEHICLE AND BEING STRANDED IN SUB-FREEZING TEMPS IS DANGEROUS TO SAY THE LEAST. WATER IS ENTERING THE AREA BETWEEN THE INNER AND OUTER FLAPS ON THE FUEL FILLER NECK AND FREEZING. FUELING CAN NOT BE PERFORMED UNTIL THE ICE IS REMOVED. WATER ENTERING THIS AREA WILL ALSO CAUSE FUEL CONTAMINATION IN WARM MONTHS WITH ENGINE FAILURE.

WATER ENTERS BETWEEN THE TWO FLAPS ON THE CAPLESS FUEL FILLER. IF TEMPERATURES ARE BELOW FREEZING THE OUTER FLAP WILL FREEZE. HAPPENS WHEN IT IS RAINING OR GOING THROUGH A CAR WASH. YOU CAN SIT THERE AND PUSH IN THE OUTER FLAP AND SEE WATER STREAMING OUT OF IT.

WATER GETS IN FUEL FILLER CAP (OUTER HINGE) AND FREEZES. ICE DAM IN THE FUEL FILLER AREA PREVENTS FUEL HINGE FROM BEING OPENED, WHICH PREVENTS VEHICLE FROM BEING FUELED. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY WHEN I DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM (PARKED NEXT TO THE FUEL PUMPS). HAS HAPPENED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS.

IN THE WINTER WATER GETS INTO THE FUEL FILLER NECK CAUSING THE CAR UNABLE TO BE FILLED CANNOT PUT THE NOZZLE IN RECOMMEND PUT A SEAL ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR SO THE DOOR WILL SEAL AND WATER WON'T ENTER BETWEEN THE COVER

WATER COLLECTS BEHIND CAPLESS FUEL FILLER FLAPPER AND IN COLD TEMPERATURES, AN ICE PLUG FORMS BEHIND FLAPPER. ICE PLUG PREVENTS OPENING FLAPPER TO INSERT GAS NOZZLE AND AND INABILITY TO REFUEL VEHICLE.
