DURING ROUTINE USE, WHILE A PASSENGER WAS IN THE FRONT SEAT AND I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE ERROR CODE WAS B1448, WHICH APPEARS TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH A MALFUNCTIONING OCCUPANCY SENSOR. WHILE THERE IS A RECALL OF OTHER 2008 SONATAS FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS, THE DEALER AND HYUNDAI CLAIM THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. I AM CONCERNED THAT HYUNDAI HAS INCORRECTLY EXCLUDED VEHICLES FROM THIS RECALL. THIS MALFUNCTION APPEARS TO RESULT IN THE PASSENGER AIRBAG BEING DISABLED, WHICH COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO PASSENGERS. PLEASE ADVISE IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE FOR MYSELF AND OTHERS SIMILARLY IMPACTED BY THE MALFUNCTION. THE WARNING HAS NOT GONE AWAY, AND REAPPEARS AFTER BEING RESET.
MY AIRBAG LIGHT IS STUCK ON AT ALL TIMES. I HAVE NOT BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS NO BODY WORK HAS BEEN DONE TO THE CAR. THE LIGHT DOESNT FLASH OFF AND ON, IT STAYS ON ALL THE TIME. SEVERAL MECHANICS CANNOT CLEAR THE CODE OR FIGURE OUT WHY. IVE BEEN SENT TO CERTIFIED HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS AND THEY CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. I VE READ ALL OVER THE INTERNET OF PEOPLE PUMPING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS INTO FIXING IT, ONLY TO HAVE THE LIGHT COME BACK ON. IM NOT PUTTING MONEY INTO A BLACK HOLE FOR THE PROBLEM TO NEVER HAVE A PERMANENT SOLUTION. I FEEL UNSAFE NOT KNOWING THE REAL ISSUE. ITS NOT THE AIRBAG FUSE OR WIRING AS THAT HAS BEEN INSEPECTED AND TESTED. I HAVE ONE DEALERSHIP WHO WON'T EVEN LOOK AT MY CAR BECAUSE I THINK THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT. I HAVE NO DOCUMENTS TO ATTACH BECAUSE TECHNICALLY NOTHING HAPPENED TO MY CAR TO TRIGGER THIS LIGHT. IT JUST CAME ON ONE DAY. IT DOESNT MATTER IF THE CAR IS PARKED OR IN DRIVING MODE OR ANYTHING. ITS ALWAYS ON. I CAN'T PASS ANY STATE INSPECTIONS.
MY 2008 SONATA WITH VIN [XXX] DOES NOT RECOGNIZE SMALLER ADULT PASSENGERS RESULTING IN ILLUMINATION OF THE "PASSENGER AIR BIG OFF" LIGHT IN THE CENTER CONSOLE. I NOTICED THIS AROUND 2009-2010. I DID RESEARCH THIS PROBLEM ONLINE AND NOTED THAT A RECALL WAS ISSUED (RECALL NUMBER 08V161000), WHICH AFFECTED THE VEHICLE'S "OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM" OR OCS. AT THE TIME, THERE WAS NOT A METHOD TO RESEARCH MY SPECIFIC VIN, SO I BROUGHT THE CAR TO TAMERON HYUNDAI IN BIRMINGHAM, AL IN THE 30-50K MILE RANGE. TAMERON HYUNDAI DID NOT PERFORM EXTENSIVE TESTING, BUT RATHER HAD A "130 LB" MECHANIC SIT IN THE VEHICLE AND CLAIMED THAT MY PASSENGER AIR BAG "OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM" OR OCS WAS IN WORKING ORDER. THE CAR CONTINUED TO FAIL TO RECOGNIZING SMALLER ADULTS. HOWEVER, MORE RECENTLY WHEN A LARGER ADULT PASSENGER SITS IN THE PASSENGER SIDE THAT CAN TRIGGER THE PASSENGER OCS, THE RED DASH AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATES ON THE DASH. IMMEDIATELY WHEN I NOTICED THE CHANGE IN THE OPERATIONAL STATUS OF THE VEHICLE, I CALLED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE REGARDING THIS ISSUE. THEY CREATED THE CASE NUMBER 10343035 FOR REFERENCE TO MY CASE, AND REFERRED ME TO FRANK HYUNDAI. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO FRANK HYUNDAI WHERE THE PROBLEM AS A MALFUNCTIONING PASSENGER OCS WHICH WAS THE SUBJECT OF THE RECALL ABOVE. BOTH FRANK HYUNDAI AND HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE ADVISED ME THAT MY VEHICLE'S VIN NUMBER WAS NOT SUBJECT TO THE RECALL ON THE OCS (RECALL NUMBER 08V161000). THE COST OF REPAIR WAS GREATER THAN THE VEHICLE'S VALUE. I WAS EASILY ABLE TO AFFORD A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE, SO I DISPOSED OF THE VEHICLE AND OBTAINED A NEW VEHICLE. HOWEVER, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OTHERS WHO STILL DRIVE SIMILAR VEHICLES. I THINK SOME SONATAS MAY HAVE BEEN OVERLOOKED IN RECALL 08V161000, AND I THINK THE CAMPAIGN SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO OTHER VINS. MY CAR ONLY HAS 82,000 MILES ON IT AND I AM THE SECOND OWNER. FOR SOME REASON THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. I RECEIVED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY NOTIFICATION EARLIER THIS YEAR IN REGARDS TO SEAT BUCKLE ASSEMBLIES ON 2006-2008 SONATAS, WHICH APPLIED TO MY CAR. AT THAT TIME HOWEVER, I HAD NO ISSUES WITH THE AIRBAG LIGHT BUT NOW THE LIGHT HAS COME ON. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT MY ISSUE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE HOWEVER IT HAS TO DO WITH A B1448 080 (OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM) (MAT DEFECT) I HAVE SPENT SOME TIME DOING RESEARCH AND IT APPEARS THAT A NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE. I AM NOT SURE WHATS GOING ON HERE BUT I THINK WE NEED TO LOOK INTO THE AIR BAG ISSUE. I HAVE BEEN QUOTED A COST OF $1,300 TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AND I DO NOT FEEL THAT THIS IS ACCEPTABLE AND THAT THE COST SHOULD NOT BE PUSHED ON TO THE CONSUMER, GIVEN THAT IT APPEARS TO BE MAT DEFECT WHICH PROBABLY STEMS FROM THE MANUFACTURER. I HAVE ALSO TAKEN THIS CAR TO THE SAME DEALER FOR SERVICE AND ALL THE RECORDS OF SERVICE ARE AVAILABLE. I AM JUST CONCERNED THAT THIS AIR BAG ISSUE MAY BE VERY SERIOUS.

B1448 ISSUE SHOWING OCS MAT DEFECT. RED DASH LIGHT SAYING "AIR BAG" CAME ON @104000 MILES AND REMAINS ON. LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING WITH NO OCCUPANT IN PASSENGER SEAT. NO ACCIDENTS OR AIRBAG DEPLOYMENTS. DEALER INDICATES NO ACTIVE RECALL HOWEVER NHTSA SHOWS "HYUNDAI RECALL NO. 083. SYSTEM WHICH FEATURES AN OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT. THE PURPOSE OF THE OCS IS TO DISABLE THE RIGHT PASSENGER SEAT FRONT AIR BAG WHEN IT DETECTS THE PRESENCE OF A CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM OR SMALL CHILD IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT. THE RIGHT FRONT AIR BAG IS DISABLED TO PREVENT INJURIES TO A CHILD THAT MAY RESULT FROM A RIGHT FRONT AIR BAG INFLATION DURING A CRASH. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TODAY BUT SINCE DEALER WILL CHECK VIN FOR ACTIVE RECALLS, EXPECT THEM TO DENY RECALL SERVICE AND TRY TO MAKE ME PAY FOR REPAIR. HAD A NOTICE BACK IN 2019 SAYING TO TAKE VEHICLE TO DEALER TO CHECK WHICH I DID AND WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OF A SCAN, THEY HAD SOMEONE SIT IN THE SEAT TO VERIFY LIGHT EXTINGUISHED BUT DID NO REPAIR. MY 13 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER (WEIGHING 85 POUNDS)WOULD SIT IN SEAT AND "AIRBAG OFF LIGHT" WOULD REMAIN ON WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE EXTINGUISHED AND PROVIDED AIR BAG PROTECTION. THEY TOLD ME THE THRESHOLD WAS ABOVE MY DAUGHTER'S WEIGHT BUT WOULD NOT TELL ME WHAT THE WEIGHT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. I DISAGREED WITH THEIR ASSESSMENT AND LET THEM KNOW. HOWEVER, THE DASH AIRBAG LIGHT MOI WAS NOT LIGHTING AT THAT TIME BUT NOW IS ON. I BELIEVE THE SENSOR IS DEFECTIVE AND COMPUTER IS TRYING TO DETERMINE WHETHER ANYONE IS IN THE SEAT OR NOT.
THE AIRBAG INDICATOR LIGHT REMAINS ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES. THE PROBLEM RESOLVED BRIEFLY AFTER THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG SEAT SENSOR WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY BUT AFTER A FEW WEEKS THE PROBLEM RETURNED.
THE AIR BAG LIGHT DOESN'T GO OFF, IT STAY ON AT ALL TIMES. I CALL HYUNDAI AND THEY SAID THEY CAN'T HELP ME!

AIRBAG LIGHTS ON AT ALL TIMES
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE SLID ON ICE AND CRASHED INTO A SNOW BANK WITHOUT WARNING. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. A TOW TRUCK WAS CALLED TO PULL THE VEHICLE OUT OF THE SNOW BANK AND THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND REPAIRED; HOWEVER, ONE DAY LATER, THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHTS WERE CONSISTENTLY ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE RECURRED EACH TIME THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE AIR BAG SENSORS IN BOTH SEATS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 84,000. UPDATED 8/19/15*CN UPDATED 10/17/2017*CN

WIFE WAS TRAVELING TO WORK AT 0550 ON RT. 147, WHEN A DEER JUMPED IN FRONT OF CAR. SHE HIT THE DEER, WITH THE CRUISE SET FOR 65 MPH. THE ENTIRE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS PUSHED INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO INJURIES, BUT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. POLICE WERE NOTIFIED AND A REPORT FILED.WE HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI WITH OUR TERMS, BUT HAVE YET TO HEAR FROM THEM. *TR

HIT SEVERAL RURAL MAIL BOXES AND CAME TO A HALT AGAINST TWO SMALL TREES. AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS OVER $7000.00 OF DAMAGE TO THE CAR. *JS
THE MORNING OF THE FLASH FREEZE ON FEBRUARY 21, 2014, MY DAUGHTER WAS TURNING LEFT AT AN INTERSECTION WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR DUE TO SLICK ROADS. WHEN SHE STEPPED ON THE BRAKE, IT SLID AND CRASHED HEAD ONTO A TRAFFIC LIGHT POLE. PART OF THE TRAFFIC LIGHT BROKE OFF AS A RESULT OF THE IMPACT. HER AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. HER CHEST AND MOUTH HIT THE STEERING WHEEL. SHE WAS IN A LOT OF PAIN AND IT HURT HER TO BREATHE SO WAS SENT FOR X-RAYS. SHE DIDN'T HAVE ANY BROKEN RIBS BUT MAY HAVE HAD INTERNAL BRUISING BECAUSE SHE NEEDED PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR SEVERAL WEEKS AND A CHIPPED TOOTH. WHEN I CALLED HYUNDAI AND TOLD HER WHAT HAPPENED, THE REPRESENTATIVE SAID THE AIRBAG SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. I WAS MAILED OUT PAPERWORK TO FILL OUT. I COMPLETED ALL THE REQUESTED INFORMATION. THEY THEN INSPECTED THE CAR. AFTER A FEW WEEKS, I RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THE ACCIDENT DID NOT MERIT THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. THEY CLOSED MY CASE WITHOUT ANY FURTHER CONVERSATION. I CALLED AFTER I RECEIVED THE LETTER AND THE REPRESENTATIVE SAID THIS WAS HYUNDAI'S FINAL DECISION AND THERE WAS NOTHING MORE THEY CAN DO FOR ME. *JS...UPDATED 12/09/15 *BF
2008 HYUNDAI SONATA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO AIR BAG MALFUNCTION, DURING AN ACCIDENT. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, WHEN SHE T-BONED ANOTHER VEHICLE. AS A RESULT, SHE SUFFERED A BROKEN VERTEBRAE. *JB
WE BEGAN QUESTIONING HYUNDAI (TAMERON HYUNDAI IN BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA) WHEN WE NOTICED THAT THIS LIGHT STAYED ON. I ALSO READ IN A HAYNES MANUAL THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AND I MENTIONED IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE DEPT. INFORMED US THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THAT PROBLEM AND THAT IT WAS DUE TO THE PASSENGER NOT SITTING PROPERLY IN THE SEAT. WE RECENTLY RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THIS PROBLEM FROM HYUNDAI. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THAT HYUNDAI HAD SUSPENDED THIS RECALL DUE TO AN OVERLOAD OF VEHICLES IN THE PROCESS OF BEING FIXED. THEY FURTHER INFORMED ME THAT I WOULD NEED TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST AND THEN A SECOND RECALL NOTICE WOULD BE SENT WHEN THE RECALL WORK SUSPENSION WAS LIFTED. I INFORMED THEM THAT I WOULD LIKE TO BE PUT ON THE RECALL LIST WITHOUT TAKING THE VEHICLE IN "TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT" TO SAVE ME 2.5 HOURS OF DRIVING TIME AND A SECONDARY WAIT TIME AT THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT DO THAT. FINALLY THEY TOLD ME THAT THE REPAIR WOULD REQUIRE THEM TO REMOVE THE SEAT BOTTOM AND SEND IT TO CALIFORNIA FOR THE REPAIR, BUT THEY WOULD RETURN THE VEHICLE TO ME TO USE IN THE MEANTIME. THEY COULD NOT GIVE AN ESTIMATE OF THE TIME THE VEHICLE WOULD BE WITHOUT THE SEAT. THIS IS MY ONLY CAR AND I FREQUENTLY NEED TO USE IT TO TRANSPORT 2 ADULTS AND 2 CHILDREN. THIS WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO DO WITHOUT A SEAT, ESPECIALLY IF THE AMOUNT OF TIME WOULD BE FOR LONGER THAN 1 WEEK. YOUR ASSISTANCE IS REQUESTED IN THIS MATTER. *TR

THIS SENSOR IS SUPPOSED TO DISABLE THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WHEN IT DETECTS A CHILD, BUT A RECALL WAS ISSUED BECAUSE THE SENSOR DISABLES THE AIRBAG EVEN FOR SOME ADULTS. I HAVE THIS PROBLEM TOO. I OFTEN NOTICE THAT THE "PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF" LIGHT ILLUMINATES WHEN CERTAIN ADULT PASSENGERS OVER 120 POUNDS SIT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT.. SO I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE PACIFICO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN PHILADELPHIA, AFTER EXAMINING MY VEHICLE, THE DEALERSHIP REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME, IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS, THAT THE MECHANIC VERIFIED THAT THE SYSTEM OPERATED CORRECTLY, DESPITE MY INSISTENCE THAT THE AIRBAG WAS TURNED OFF FOR SOME ADULT PASSENGERS. AS THE PURPOSE OF THE RECALL WAS TO FIX THE SENSOR FOR EXACTLY THE PROBLEM MY CAR WAS EXHIBITING, I WAS WORRIED THAT THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT CONDUCT THE PROPER TESTS. THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT THE AIRBAG ON MY CAR IS DISABLED FOR SOME ADULT PASSENGERS. AFTER HOURS OF CALLING THE HYUNDAI HOTLINE AND SPEAKING WITH CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVES, I WAS EVENTUALLY TOLD BY A CASE MANAGER THAT THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT PERFORM THE NECESSARY DIAGNOSTIC TEST, AND I SHOULD BRING IN MY VEHICLE AGAIN. THIS IS QUITE DISTURBING--IF THE DEALERSHIP LIED TO ME ABOUT CONDUCTING THE SAFETY TESTS, THEY VERY WELL COULD HAVE LIED TO OTHER CUSTOMERS AS WELL. HOW MANY OTHER HYUNDAI CAR OWNERS ARE DRIVING AROUND WITH A FAULTY AIRBAG BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP LIED ABOUT CONDUCTING THIS SAFETY TEST? HOW MANY OTHER SAFETY RECALLS DID THEY VIOLATE? AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON AFTER ADJUSTING DRIVER'S SEAT. BROUGHT VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THAT DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT BELT BUCKLE WAS DEFECTIVE EVEN THOUGH NO PROBLEMS WITH OPERATING SEATBELT - REPAIR COST $380. READ NUMEROUS REPORTS ABOUT PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG RECALL - HAD CHECKED OUT - NO PROBLEM WITH PASSENGER SIDE. READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT SONATAS FROM VARIOUS YEARS HAVING AIR BAG PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF DEFECTIVE SEAT BELT BUCKLES. REPAIRS WERE MADE ON MANY BUT LIGHT CAME BACK ON. SEEMS LIKE THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE BECAUSE OF SO MANY COMPLAINTS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS MANEUVERED ABRUPTLY TO AVOID AN OBJECT AND SWAYED OFF THE ROAD INTO A DITCH, CRASHING INTO CONCRETE. THE VEHICLE THEN ROLLED AND LANDED UPSIDE DOWN ON ITS ROOF. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE DRIVER AND FRONT SEAT PASSENGER SUSTAINED SEVERE BODILY INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED OF THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
