Excessive motor oil consumption leading to a cylinder 2 misfire resulting in a new motor needing to be purchased. The car is less than 5 years old. I purchased the car in 2018 with 13,000 miles and preformed all regularly scheduled auto maintenance and all of KIA’s recalls and advised KIA on multiple occasions that there was excessive oil consumption. Driving down the highway the car began to shake uncontrollably and the check engine light illuminated. The car was pulled over at an auto zone where it was advised of the cylinder 2 misfire. The car was then towed immediately into the Greensboro KIA dearlership for formal diagnosis of the issue. At which point the dealership called and advised all tests were performed and this repair would require a new motor for a total of $11000.

My 2017 Kia Sorento check engine turn on so I took it to the dealer. The dealer told me that it was the sensors and that the warranty would cover it. A few days later they told me they needed to change the engine. They also said that they needed the oil changes receipts. I send the receipts that I had in the moment, but the warranty needed more receipts. The lady from the dealer told me to call KIA to see what else they need it to approve the warranty to replace the engine. Another lady from KIA told me they need it 11 receipts in total to approve the warranty. I send the rest of the receipts which makes 11 receipts and they still don't want to replace the engine. I call the lemon law to see if they could help me and they told me because I never had any problems with the vehicle and it needs 2 or more problems with the engine, but they told me that KIA has a collective lawsuit for that are engines 2.0 and 2.4 and I have 2.4 on my Kia Sorento.

It is burning through 2 quarts of oil every 3000 miles and it is sitting at a Kia dealership whom doesn’t want to fix it. I have seen class action lawsuits in regards to this issue

I took my Kia SORENTO 2017 into my local Kia Dealership. June of 2021 my oil light came on when you turned hard left. They did oil comp. had me come in very 1,000 miles. By the third time they kept it and did deep clean and found the issue and fixed it. Once again my car is burning oil back in march and the dealership did nothing for me but a oil change. Waited until the next oil change and my oil light came on again than they said yes your burning oil again. Come back in 1,000 and we see how much it’s burning did it twice and suggested another deep clean. But the Manger of the service department step in and said we did that 2yrs go for her. Let’s do a quick clean at her next oil change. Since July have been going in to have the dealership top me car off.

The engine malfunctioned, it is available for inspection upon request. My family of four was traveling in the vehicle at 80 mph down I-65 when the malfunction occurred. No warning lights came on, the vehicle began to slow to 60mph and would not accelerate when pressing the gas. When the gas was pressed the entire vehicle began to shake, still no warning lights. Thankfully we were 1 mile from exit 71. I pressed the gas one last time, at this point we are coasting off the exit at 25 mph, that is when all the lights came on in the dash. We were able to safely park on the side of the road and the car died and would not restart. This all happened in less than a minute. Mine and my family's safety were 100% at risk. When my mechanic looked at the vehicle, he said it was lucky that the car did not catch fire. The entire base of the engine was melted, and all the oil was gone from the engine. My mechanic advised me to take the vehicle back to where I bought it, Car Town KIA in Nicholasville KY. They had in place an extended warranty on the engine due to a rod failure but have now told me that the engine will not be covered to be replaced.

I have an engine oil consumption issue. I am running out of oil before 1,000 miles. I have had this issue checked out at my local mechanic and at the Kia dealership in Hurst, Texas. They are recommending that I bring the unit back for a process of three visits paying out of pocket for an issue that is clearly visible. I do not have any lights on my dashboard and the oil is being burned for some reason. I purchased this car used and have not even had it for a year, and here lies a major problem. I feel this issue is placing my safety at risk. The car is starting to stutter when pulling off and when I take it for service, it keeps saying low oil. It's unethical to have to get oil changes every 30 days.

The 2.4 liter engine is using in excess of 4 quarts oil in less than 4000 miles. Kia corporation suggest to keep putting oil in engine until an internal failure. Then the engine will need replacing. The dealership willfully sold this under a Certified Pre-owned status. Which I think should be considered fraud. With Kia knowing they had the oil consumption issue prior to purchase. The vehicle was purchased Jan 23,2021 with 34,912 miles on it. It currently has 58921 miles on it. First began noticing the usage Dec 27 2022.

Excessive oil consumption. I get oild changes every 3 months at the dealership. I must add 6-10 quarts of oil inbetween these changes. I notified the dealer, but they are unwilling to replace my engine. I was told it needs to "blow up" before issue will be addressed. My 2017 Kia Sorento has 63,000 miles this issue started at 60,000 miles. It is outside my warranty as I am the second owner. This is not a safe approach from Kia, as i feel waiting for my car to "blow up" could cause injury to myself and others. I have KIA 2017 Sorento, the engine has oil consumption with no leak and I have to add oil almost every 3 days. I take it to KIA dealer and after checking he oil level for 1000mile, the dealer informed me that they can change the engine only when it fails and not before that. I found this solution is risky because I drive it in highway and it could cause a serious cars accident if it suddenly stopped in the middle of the highway. I can't find any reason why they don't want to do engine change and It is clear that KIA knows about the engine problem but they want to save money not save people life.

The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, the vehicle started to decelerate independently. The contact stated that the low oil pressure, the check engine, and the battery warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to roll to a stop on the side of the roadway. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the drain plug was missing, and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

When the car had engine light was on at 60200 mileage, the dealer replace the engine in 2021. I have the same symptom in 2021 and engine light on. The dealer did diagnosis and said cvvt problem. The dealer refused to cover it with the extended warranty. I can't drive the car because of not enough power to speed-up on high way.

High oil consumption- needed to add additional oil before 3,000 miles post oil change. This has happened for the last three oil changes. This last time, exactly 3,000 miles post oil change, there was no oil at all. Oil sensor light went on to indicate low oil.

Engine stopped working while I was driving due to a rod bearing issue with no warning. No engine lights, low oil lights, etc came on to warn me. Luckily I was able to get to the side of the road and wait for a tow truck. Kia dealer said it was unrepairable due to "rod bearing" failure, and I needed a new engine. Kia has recalled/updated software for their 4 cylinder GDI engines for a "rod bearing" engine failure issues but not the V6. Kia has also settled a class action lawsuit due to this failure - but only in the 4 cyl engines. The V6 is also having this problem. Dealer quoted nearly $10,000 for a new engine, I chose to sell the vehicle at a loss instead.

This involves a 2017 Kia Sorento. 1.350 miles after a scheduled oil change I checked the oil and found it was 3 quarts of oil low. The color of the oil on dip stick was blackened. I have been topping off the oil every 400 miles with another quart of oil. I visited a local Kia dealership and talked to a maintenance person who told me to stop adding oil and it would eventually "freeze up" and they would replace the engine. They also told me that Kia had extended the warranty on this type of engine to 999,999 miles. This tells me that they expect to replace the engine eventually. Their advice above sounds stupid and extremely dangerous. If I hadn't checked the oil level after 1.350 miles it would have run out before the next scheduled oil change. This could have happened during rush hour traffic and would have possibly caused a very serious accident. If they plan on replacing it in the future I think they should do it now before any serious accidents happen. I hope you would agree. There has not been any warning lights to say it was low on oil. Again , the engine would have to freeze up before they would replace it. Thanks for your assistance.

The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made an abnormal sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact that the vehicle needed four new rotors and brake pads. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that there was a leak in the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that the brake light bulbs had to be replaced every three months. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 28,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while the dealer was servicing the vehicle, she was informed that the vehicle was experiencing a minor engine oil leak due to the engine oil being overfilled. The dealer cleaned the engine compartment. The contact stated that the engine was running rough, and the vehicle was vibrating while idling. The contact stated that while driving with the Adaptive Cruise Control set to 73 MPH, the vehicle made abnormal popping sounds and jerked. The contact noticed a significant amount of smoke coming from underneath the hood. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road, where the vehicle lost motive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a piston slap caused by faulty crankshaft and rod bearing. The dealer determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact there would be no assistance since the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

Driving on Interstate Highway at speed limit 70 mph, car starts slowing down rapidly. Looked at dash engine light flashing, put the hazard lights on and pulled to left temporary emergency pullout lane coasting at 20 mph. Had to wait for big gap in traffick to get to right hand side of Interstate, hoping engine didn't seize up in middle of highway. Was able to find area wide enough to be clear of oncoming traffick. Called for roadside service. Car was pulled up on wrecker, taken to Kia dealership. I was told they would inspect car asap. The service advisor called the next day late. Told me they would be replacing the engine in car with a remanufactured engine.

Sudden Engine Failure: My car died in the middle of a highway on-ramp lane, so I had to call 911 to ask a police officer to come help. Our car came to a complete stop with no warning signs prior. My car was driving totally fine up until that point and then suddenly this happened on the highway. This put ourselves at risk (myself and my 2 children in the car), and it put everyone behind me at risk of rear-ending me, as traffic was moving. During the incident, the engine would not turn over at all. I waited about 10 minutes for a state trooper to pull up, while cars and big trucks whizzed past my stopped car on both sides. When the state trooper arrived, he called the highway department, and someone from the highway department came and pushed my car to the shoulder so that we could be safer. We had it towed to our Kia Service Center: Jones Kia, 2001 Belair Rd, Bel Air, MD 21014. They completed a diagnostic review. They contacted us and explained that: The cylinder head bolt failed. It became "threaded" (this was the term used by the Kia Service center who examined the car), causing the engine to overheat and seize. It happened so quickly that there were no warning signs. The service adviser at Jones Kia told us that we would need a whole new engine replacement.

My Sorento had been running just fine. I only did maintenance projects such as new brakes, new tires, oil changes and then one day out of no where my car starts making a knocking noise that got progressively louder. No check engine or oil light appeared. I took it to a mechanic the next day and they said that I needed a new engine and that there was no oil in the car. I know that I had placed oil in car with in the year when I got my brakes replaced. Also there was no leaking of oil anywhere underneath my car. I still own on my Kia and the price of a new engine was quoted over $10,000.00.

Burning a lot of oil

Type: Vehicle, Vehicle: 2017 KIA SORENTO, Manufacturer: Kia America, Inc.

Apr 2023

We bought our 2017 Kia Sorento new from the Kirby dealership in, CA. The first 100k miles we took it faithfully to the dealer for all suggested service. For years it has had oil leak, oil where it should not be in the engine, and serious oil consumption issues. They did not solve the issues despite bringing it in many times. 9/2022 the engine completely shut down on the freeway in a very dangerous area. At 115k miles it happened again 3/23 in the exact same place, with the same symptoms. This time they say it is not covered and quoted us over $7k for an engine replacement. We escalated to management and corporate, they have all denied responsibility, given us many reasons why, all that we do not agree with. Each person we have talked to has given a different reason. I joined the Engine Failure- Kia/Hyundai group on Facebook. Now I am aware of the extent of the catastrophic Theta ll engine failure problem. Kia is doing everything they can to deny claims even with class action suits and pending suits and litigation. Anecdotally, I have read hundreds of stories like ours. In 4 weeks 4k more have joined, almost 500 daily, with engine failures. Now that I know that this is a pervasive and wide spread issue with thousands of faulty engines, I realize that this is not a company who cares about the wellbeing of their customers. Their engine design flaws, actions and inaction are causing their customers stress and heartache, financial ruin, terrifying accidents, house fires, and death and yet they are doing everything they can to skirt financial responsibility for their issues. They are lying to their customers, finding every loop hole they can and not honoring the mandated settlements to make their customers whole and provide them with a safe and reliable vehicle. It is a tragedy that should be getting more press and legal attention to hold Kia responsible for the pain they are causing their customers, who put their faith and safety in the hands of the company.
