I have a 2010 Nissan Rouge that is having powertrain issues, specifically the CVT, three times, after driving a long distance in very hot weather, and then going on a long uphill grade, the vehicle lost power. It dropped from 70 to about 40mph, this happened on two interstates along the same stretch and a third time on a California state highway. I did some research and found that this is a common problem with the Rogues powertrain's CVT over several years and there was also a class action lawsuit for some years of this Rogue, but not for a 2010. Nissan did pay for some repairs on other years to the lawsuit claimants.
My transmission let go
The transmission/power train on this vehicle is experiencing common failures as reported by many owners. On my way to work, my Nissan Rogue began to stall and lose speed while on the highway. The speed decreased from 70 mph down to 50 mph. Approximately 5 minutes way from work, my vehicle barely accelerated through 4 way stop while making left turn which posed a high risk with on coming traffic headed in my direction I had my vehicle inspected by my ASE certified mechanic and was informed that my Rogue prompted transmission failure code. He (Dale Baca, Alternative Auto Care in Thornton, CO) also informed me that this was a recurring issue with my Nissan Rogue as well as other Nissans with the CVT transmission. No indication of failure or warning lamps was given on my dashboard on the day of July 28th, 2023.
While driving the vehicle at average highway speeds for over one hour approximately, the CVT transmission fluid overheats, and an engine code PO744 is set. This code is followed by reduction in engine power and speed limited to a safe mode of 25 mph. The danger of being rear-ended while attempting to safely exit the freeways here in California is high. This has happened multiple times on different roadways, uphill, downhill, and through the desert Nissan has many technical service bulletins, but no recalls. A CVT for this 2010 is $4000 or more, later models received a CVT fluid cooler, this year it's almost $1400 to install with no hopes the CVT will hold up.
The Nissan Rogue is my 16 year old sons car. He was on a main road with his younger sister and a friend when he slowed down to turn a corner and as he pushed gas the car began to jerk violently then there was a bang and a click noise the car stayed running but was unable to accelerate he tried putting it in park and it started rolling away… 4 other bystanders had to help push the vehicle out of the way so a total of 7 people were pushing car off main road into a parking lot. Had someone look at it in that parking lot. It is something to do with the CVT transmission. Had to have it towed to my home to see if it can be repaired. Or if I wasted my money. Either way definitely have to get rid of it due to the danger. There was 3 teens in this car and they could have been seriously injured in this car when it broke down on a major street or when they were pushing it into a parking lot. By the grace of god my kids and their friend are safe. After this I would never buy another Nissan for the fact that I was terrified that they could’ve been seriously injured for a CVT transmission that has had numerous complaints and issues. It is definitely not safe for anyone, let alone a new teenage driver My son also told me that 2 weeks ago he was at a stop sign tried to accelerate when car would not move then it started jerking forward and finally drove normal. After that it could not be replicated until yesterday when it had incident on main road.
ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE SHIFTING FROM 5TH TO 6TH GEAR WHILE DRIVING IN MOTION
2010 Nissan Rogue SW pre-owned certified on 2/24/2012; Mileage: 13,403. Purchased SECURITY+PLUS service Warranty. The summer of 2014 Rogue started a whining noise going up hills or under a light load. There was no other indication from the vehicle that it was under distress, no warning lights appeared etc. Dealership mechanic test drove and confirmed the CVT was failing. 6/13/2014; Mileage 44228 per Warranty, installed: "1-Transaxle Assy; 1-Trans Exchange Expense; 5- NS-2 CVT TRANMI; 1Tranmission CO; 1 Cooler Kit-AUTO." "Certified concern, per Tech Line replaced CVT Transmission Assembly, Programmed TCM, Installed Transmission cooler, operates per design." The CVT was flushed and cleaned on 6/06/2018 at 78,882 by same dealership. Miles since new CVT was replaced 44228 - 78882 = 34654 June 24, 2021 upon returning from a trip the car was not shifting properly. At starting of an intersection the VOC light flashes and came on, and the car hardly would go across the intersection with the gas pedal pushed to floor. There were times gear shifting would rev and not shift smoothly. It was dangerous doing only 55mph in a 75 mph on I-10 returning. On July 22, 2021; Mileage 92762; took to dealership for digonostic; they reported: "caused by check codes and A/B counts no code present. Transmission has B counts recommend transmission replacement." "CVT Assembly $4890; front lower control arms if done at time of CVT $650 & drive belt $180.". And, of course, they informed me that the Warranty expired 1 year to the month. However,it is my understanding that 2010 Rogue were given an extended 10 year warranty/150k. My Warrenty book indicates differently. I believe Nissan's Warranty on my specific vehicle is misleading and needs reviewed. And may be considered fraudelant. A 2010 Nissan Rogue has less than 94,000 miles 1 CVT replaced prematurely now requiring another new CVT transmission replaced. North America Nissan denied asst beyond warranty
I WAS DRIVING ON I70 FROM LAKEWOOD, CO TO NEW CASTLE, CO AND ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH THE DRIVE, NO MATER WHAT GEAR I WAS IN OR HOW HARD I PUSH THE GAS PEDDLE DOWN (FLOORED IT), MY CAR WOULD ONLY GO 35-40 MPH ON THE HILLS. I WAS ON A HIGHWAY WHERE THE SPEED LIMIT IS 65 AND IN SOME PLACES 75 AND IT IS VERY UNSAFE TO BE STUCK GOING ONLY 35-40 MILES AN HOUR.
WHEN DRIVING IN A HIGH WAY AT 70MPH CAR WOULD LOST CONECTION WITH ENGINE NONE RESPONSIVE AND CAN CAUSE MAJOR ACCIDENT CAR TRANSMISSION PRACTACLY GOES ON ON NUTRAL DOESNT RESPOND TO GAS PEDAL.
NEAR THE END OF MAY OF THIS YEAR, THE CAR STARTED LOSING POWER ON THE INTERSTATE. IT BECAME UNRESPONSIVE TO THE PEDAL AND WOULD ONLY GO ABOUT 40 MPH. IT ALSO MADE HORRIBLE NOISE AND VIBRATION. VEHICLES GOING 70 MPH HAD TO AVOID HITTING IT. THIS HAPPENED ON BRIDGES IN LOUISIANA WHERE OFF RAMPS ARE MILES AWAY. TOOK IT TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT, NO REPAIR PARTS. COST $3,800 PLUS TAX. DISCOVERED NISSAN'S EXTENDED WARRANTY, 10 YEARS OF 120,000 MILES, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST. CAR HAS 101,000 MILES BUT WAS PURCHASED IN MARCH 2010, PAST 10 YEARS BY 2 MONTHS. IF I PURCHASED IN JUNE 2010 NISSAN WOULD PAY. SINCE BOUGHT IN MARCH, NISSAN REFUSED ANY RESPONSIBILITY. WAS ABLE TO GET IT REPAIRED FOR $3,200 WITH A REBUILT TRANSMISSION WITH 12,000 MILES 12 MONTH WARRANTY, WHICH EVER COMES FIRST. SAME TYPE OF TRANS THAT NISSAN ADMITS IS FAULTY. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 NISSAN ROGUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESPOND WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. AFTER STOPPING AND ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO REST FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, THE VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER NISSAN OF GASTONIA (2275 EAST FRANKLIN BLVD, GASTONIA NC) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION COOLER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IT WAS ALSO DEEM THAT DUE TO THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE COOLER FAILURE THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT YET NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
I HAVE A 2010 NISSAN ROGUE I HAVE BEEN HAVING ISSUES WITH LOSS OF POWER WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MILES AN HOUR IT STARTS DECELERATING TO 60 AND THE 50 MPH SOMETIME WHEN I'M AT A LIGHT IT WILL NOT TAKE OFF. I WILL PUT THE THE CAR I DRIVE OR REVERSE CAR WILL NOT MOVE. ALSO I WAS TRYING TO PASS OVER ANOTHER CAR AND WHEN I PRESSED THE GAS VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE IF I EVER SAW ONE WHY WILL NISSAN NOT TAKE CARE OF THIS CVT ISSUE I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY DON'T ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM BEFORE MORE DEATHS OCCUR. THIS ISSUE HAS HAPPENED ON HWY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000. *DT 9/5 AND 9/26 TRIP TO KENTUCKY AND MICHIGAN 65-70 TO 20-25 PULLED OFF QUICKLY COASTED LOOKING FOR EXIT AFTER ABOUT TEN MINUTES POWER STARTED COMING BACK. MADE IT HOME. DID NOT HAPPEN AGAIN UNTIL 9/26 CALLED MECHANIC SAID HE WAS STANDING LOOKING AT A 2019 THAT THE GUY SAID IS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING. MADE A WHIRRING NOISE AND LOST POWER, HE SAID IT WAS A 5-6K TRANSMISSION FIX AND HE WOULD GET MY CAR IN THIS COMING MONDAY TO HOOK IT UP. I TOLD MENDALLS THAT WE HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS BESIDES THE HIGHWAY TRIPS AND HE SAID THE OTHER GUY SAID THE EXACT SAME THING. 109 POWERTRAIN TRANSMISSION DECELERATION COMPLAINTS.*JB
DRIVE SHAFT BROKE AND TOOK OUT SHIFT GEAR CABLE.. CAR WAS IN MOTION AND JUST STOPPED DEAD IN MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. UPON CALLING NISSAN TO INQUIRE COST OF DRIVE SHAFT THEY REPLIED " WE HAVE THEM IN STOCK BECAUSE THIS IS VERY COMMON, HAPPENS ALL THE TIME"
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 NISSAN ROGUE. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH OVER SMOOTH OR FLAT ROAD SURFACES, THE VEHICLE FELT AS IF IT WERE ON AN INCLINE. THE VEHICLE DECELERATED TO 20 MPH. THE FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS TIMES. ON ONE OCCASION, THE VEHICLE DECELERATED AND THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE TO THE LEFT LANE. THE CONTACT HAD TO PLACE THE GEAR INTO REVERSE AND REVERSE THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE CONTACT CONSULTED A SECOND INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
125000 MILES AND THE CVT TRANSMISSION FAILED. I WAS OM MY WAY TO THE STORE AND IT STARTED GRINDING AND WAS DONE.

AFTER DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WITH MY NISSAN ROUGE 2010, WITH CONTINUOUS SPEED OF 55 TO 60 MPH FOR ABOUT HALF HOUR, AND THEN CAME TO A FULL STOP, DUE TO TRAFFIC CONGESTIONS, THE CAR WON'T RUN OR ACCELARATE, EVEN IF I PUSH THE (GAS) PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I HAVE TO TURN OFF, AND TURN OFF THE ENGINE TO GET IT GOING AGAIN. IT HAPPENED MANY TIMES DURING WARM OR HOT WEATHER. IN WINTER, IT SEEMS TO BE FINE. THE DEALER SAID IT WAS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, BUT THEY CHARGED ME, EVEN THEY HAVE NOT FOUND OR FIX ANY ISSUES.
2010 NISSAN ROGUE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY I-57 NORTHBOUND AROUND 159TH DOING THE SPEED LIMIT OF 60 THE CONJURING START SLOWING DOWN I PULLED OVER ON THE SHOULDER AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND IT WOULD START UP IT WOULDN'T SAY ANYTHING HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A MECHANIC SATURDAY MORNING MONDAY THEY TOLD ME THE TRANCE WISCONSIN CVT TRANS THE CAR IS HAS 84000 MILES 2010 EXCELLENT CONDITION NO MAJOR ISSUES AND THEY WON'T HONOR THE WARRANTY ON THE CAR
ON THE HIGHWAY GOING AN A 1.5 HOUR TRIP THE 2008-2010 ROUGE TRANSMISSION WILL OVER HEAT CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO GO INTO "LIMP" MODE WITH NO WARNING WHICH MEANS IT HAS NO POWER. NISSAN SENT OUT A SERVICE BULLETIN TO THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENTS IN SEPTEMBER 2016 ACKNOWLEDGING THEIR IS A DEFECT AND THE FIX IS AN EXTERNAL COOLER BUT THEY REFUSE TO FIX MY CAR. IF A FAMILY OF 4 IS IN THE CAR AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR THE VEHICLE COULD GO INTO "LIMP" MODE AND WHEN THEY TRY TO PULL BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY THEY COULD LOSE POWER RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY AND GET STRUCK BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND BE KILLED. WHO WOULD ANSWER FOR THAT? FLETCHER NISSAN IN JOPLIN MO ARE THE ONES WHO TOLD ME TO CONTACT YOU BECAUSE NISSAN CORPORATE ARE THE ONES REFUSING TO FIX THE ISSUE. AT FLETCHER NISSAN SAID THEY HAVE HAD 5 2008-2010 ROUGE VEHICLES COME IN IN JUST THE LAST FEW MONTHS WITH THE SAME DEFECT. SO IT IS NOT JUST MY VEHICLE. THEY NEED TO RECALL ALL THE AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE SOMEONE DIES BECAUSE OF THIS. THANK YOU
AFTER APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS OF DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE TRANSMISSION GOES INTO "LIMP" MODE. NISSAN STATES THIS IS THE RESULT OF THE TRANSMISSION OVERHEATING AND THE ONLY SOLUTION IS INSTALLING A NEW NISSAN EXTERNAL COOLER. CAR WILL BARELY REACH 55-60 MPH ESPECIALLY IF GOING UP HILL. ALSO, ONCE THE CAR IS STOPPED IT WILL NOT ACCELERATE QUICKLY. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED IT GAVE NO WARNING AND IT ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE ACCELERATOR NOT RESPONDING WHEN MY ATTEMPTING TO TURN ACROSS ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WITH SERIOUS INJURIES OR WORSE IF NOT ADDRESSED. THERE WAS NO WARNING THE TRANSMISSION HAD OVERHEATED AND GONE INTO THIS MODE. THE FIRST SIGN WAS THE CAR SIMPLY FAILING TO ACCELERATE WITH THE GAS PEDAL DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR. MULTIPLE TIMES THE CAR HAS JUST SUDDENLY DECELERATED IN HEAVY HIGHWAY TRAFFIC FROM 75 MPH TO 55 MPH AFTER ONLY 1.5-2 HOURS OF HIGHWAY DRIVING. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SIGNIFICANT DEFECT THAT IS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. ALSO IT APPEARS THAT THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR A EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME WITH LITTLE TO NO EFFORT FROM THE MANUFACTURER TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE.
MY 2010 NISSAN ROGUE WILL NOT ACCELERATE WHEN GOING UPHILL ON THE HIGHWAY. WHEN FLOORING THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR WILL SLOW DOWN FROM 70 TO 60 TO 50 TO 40 MPH ON A UPHILL (THERE WERE ONLY THREE PASSENGERS INCLUDING DRIVER). THE CAR TRANSMISSION WILL EVENTUALLY STOP WORKING UNTIL THE CAR COOLS DOWN. TOOK CAR TO A NISSAN SERVICE CENTER AND WAS REPAIRED UNDER NISSAN'S CVT 10 YEARS/120K MILES WARRANTY REFERENCING TSB NTB14-002E. THE VALVE BODY WAS REMOVED/REPLACED AND AN EXTERNAL COOLER WAS INSTALLED TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE.
WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, VEHICLE SUDDENLY DECELERATED TO 50, THEN 35, THEN 20 MPH. FORTUNATELY, WE WERE NEAR THE EXIT AND WERE ABLE TO LEAVE THE HWY. AFTER SHUTTING OFF THE VEHICLE AND WAITING A FEW MINUTES, THE VEHICLE PERFORMED NORMALLY. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME IN ONE YEAR OF OWNERSHIP THIS HAS HAPPENED.
CVT TRANSMISSION OVERHEATED DUE TO THE FOLLOWING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS 1. HOT WEATHER (92 F) 2. A LONG DRIVE (OVER 3 HOURS) 3. DRIVING UP HIGHWAY MOUNTAINS IN VIRGINIA. FAIL SAFE ACTIVATED CAUSING THE CAR COMPUTER CPU TO DRASTICALLY CUT POWER TO THE WHEELS. THIS CAUSED A LACK OF POWER SUCH THAT I COULD NOT ACCELERATE UP THE HILL IN EXCESS OF 45 MPH. THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE HILL WAS 70 MPH. EIGHTEEN WHEEL TRUCKS WERE IMMEDIATELY BEHIND MY ROGUE FORCING ME TO PULL ONTO THE ROAD SHOULDER ALLOWING THEM TO GO PAST. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A LOCAL NISSAN DEALER WHO CONFIRMED FROM EXAMINATION OF THE CAR CPU THAT THE TRANSMISSION OVERHEATED AND THAT AN OVERHEAT CODE WAS FOUND IN THE CPU. THEY ALSO CONFIRMED THAT THE FAIL SAFE WAS ACTIVATED THAT CAUSED THE SEVERE POWER LOSS. THE NISSAN DEALER KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS FROM MY DESCRIPTION. NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND EVEN EXTENDED MY TRANSMISSION CVT WARRANTY FROM 6YR/60,000 MILES TO 10YR/120,000 MILES. HOWEVER, THEIR SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM IS TO INSTALL AN AUXILIARY CVT TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER AT AN EXPENSE TO ME OF $1225. MY DEALER CHECKED WITH NISSAN AND SAID THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE EXPENSE EVEN THOUGH THE TRANSMISSION IN MY CAR IS STILL ON WARRANTY. IN CONCLUSION, NISSAN IS INSTALLING CVT TRANSMISSIONS IN SEVERAL OF THEIR MODEL CARS WITH A KNOWN OVERHEATING ISSUE AND REQUIRES THEIR CUSTOMERS TO INSTALL A TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER AT THE CUSTOMERS EXPENSE. THE DRAMATIC LOSS OF POWER IS A BIG SAFETY ISSUE. IN MY CASE I HAD TO SPEED UP TO GET UP THE HILLS AS MY SPEED DROPPED FROM 80MPH DOWN TO 45MPH FINALLY PULLING ONTO THE SHOULDER.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, MY 2010 NISSAN ROUGE SUDDENLY WOULD DROP THE SPEED TO UNDER 55MPH. I WOULD PUSH THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR BUT IT STILL WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. NO WARNINGS OR ENGINE LIGHT DISPLAYED ON THE PANEL. THIS WAS A VERY SCARY EXPERIENCE. WHAT IS SOMEONE DIDN'T PAY ATTENTION AND REAR-ENDED ME BECAUSE OF MY SUDDEN SPEED REDUCTION WITHOUT A WARNING. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR ON A INTERSTATE. I PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR IT AND NOW IT HAS A VERY LIMITED USE. I ONLY HOPE THAT NISSAN WILL CAREFULLY LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM. SOMEONE'S LIFE COULD BE LOST BECAUSE OF IT. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND I KNOW THAT I'M NOT THE FIRST PERSON TO MAKE THIS COMPLAINT. *TR
