While in Tesla’s auto pilot mode, the vehicle breaks for no particular reason. This is particularly very dangerous while going 70 mph and someone is following in close proximity. I have gotten side eyes and hand gestures from fellow motorists, I presume it is due to them thinking I break checked but I am very defensive driver and I would not put anyone at risks for any reason. I got rear ended back in 2019 in slow speed but do attribute this to Tesla sudden breaking issue. I have since stop auto auto pilot in regular basis. I do use auto pilot once here and there often in light traffic.
While driving with autopilot engaged (adaptive cruise control + automatic braking) the vehicle abruptly slams on the brakes even when there is no vehicle or objects in its path.
The scenario mentioned has happened numerous times. When using Autopilot on a two lane highway, the vehicle's AEB kicked in and slammed on the brakes multiple times. My theory is that since ditching radar, the vehicle thinks that the oncoming traffic is coming into its current lane even though there is a set of double yellow lines dividing it. This phantom braking issue is especially prevalent when there are curves in the road, as momentarily it may appear that oncoming traffic is "head on". This resulted in me almost getting rear ended by the vehicles behind me and causing a multi-vehicle accident.
Multiple occurrences of phantom braking while at highway speed and using Autopilot (I do not have FSD). In most cases, there is another car (on either side next to me) and a 3rd car is coming up from behind at a high rate of speed. The 3rd car then cuts across to the open lane and as that's happening, my car suddenly/abruptly applies emergency braking and I instinctually apply throttle to keep the car moving forward. I have submitted bug reports to Tesla at the time of each incident.
When I drive under bridges during the daytime, the vehicle will alert and in many cases brake the car. Can be very repeatable in my experience on my commute. Has happened on nearly every single different software version I had on the car over the last several years. Used to always report the 'bug' to tesla but they never did anything about it
TESLA HAS CHARGED $6000 FOR DELF DRIVING 2 YEARS BACK AND THE SELF DRIVING JUST CAME IN EFFECT , IT IS REALLY RISKY TO USE THIS AS THE CAR BRAKES RIGHT BEFORE EXIT AND SOME TIMES DOES NOT EVN RECOGNIZE THE RED LIGHT S
going down the highway (I75) and at a certain exit north of Sarasota FL the car just randomly and unexpectedly brakes (phantom braking) No cars around, just straight highway Has happened several times in this spot and also other spots
Consistent "phantom breaking" when autopilot is engaged. There is not an option for a regular cruise control, rather, Tesla activates an autopilot feature when the cruise is activated - the adaptive breaking is consistently applying the breaks when there is no reason. This is a safety issue as people following behind could hit my car when it tries to stop for no reason on a highway going 65-70 mph.
Phantom breaking on highways when approaching an overpass during daytime. Abrupt breaking on 5 fwy from 65mph Limit to 45 mph Limit when it is 65mph Limit.
We have two Tesla Model 3s - 2019 and 2020. Both vehicles are experiencing increased issues with phantom braking where the car unexpectedly applies the brakes for no apparent reason when using cruise control or AutoPilot. Often times the braking is sever and abrupt. There have been incidents where we were nearly rear ended by the car behind us because of this. This is a major safety issue and I am asking the NHTSA to investigate.
June 2021 I had an accident while Tesla Auto Pilot was engaged. I was paying complete attention to the road, there was vehicle merging to the highway from right. Neither Tesla slows down neither it have any warning and vehicle collided. Tesla Auto Pilot is misleading, and have serious safety concerns. I reported this issue to Tesla, its been months I have not heard back. I am enclosing the incident video below. https://youtu.be/orB5qq3XsJU I will be happy to share more details. [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
During autopilot driving on highway, the car applied the brakes hard 2 times during my drive for no apparent reason. I was fortunate that no one was close behind me. This is a significant safety hazard.
Front facing camera, used by autopilot, obscured by contaminant on the inside of the windshield. Autopilot engaged without warning, even though the front facing camera was significantly impaired due to the contaminant. Contaminant appear to be glue residue based upon tackiness. The front facing camera is surrounded by an anti reflection enclosure. Upon inspection, the anti reflection enclosure was significantly degraded and broke into many pieces while being serviced. As this enclosure is designed to absorb light, it’s likely getting extremely hot during the summer months in a car parked facing the sun.
