The contact's sister-in-law owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while his sister-in-law was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled inadvertently. There were no warning lights illuminated. Upon inspecting the engine, the contact noticed there was no engine oil in the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the vehicle had consumed an excessive amount of engine oil, causing the engine to fail. The independent mechanic advised the contact to tow the vehicle to the local dealer. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as there was no recall associated with the VIN and the vehicle warranty had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 113,000.

MY TOYOTA CAMRY IS USING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF ENGINE OIL. BEGINNING AT ABOUT 90000 MILES MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY LE EQUIPPED WITH THE 2AZ FOUR CYLINDER ENGINE BEGAN TO USE OIL. SUBSEQUENTLY, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS TOLD I WAS TWO MONTHS OUT OF MY TEN YEAR WARRANTY AND ANY REPAIRS WOULD BE AT MY EXPENSE. TODAY, THE VEHICLE HAS 117000 MILES AND IS BURNING A QUART OF OIL EVERY 700 MILES. THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CORRECTING AT THEIR EXPENSE.

ENGINE IS BURNING TO MUCH OIL, LAST THREE OIL CHANGES I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING TO TOYOTA DEALER THAT CAR IS GETTING LOW ON OIL ON AVERAGE EVERY TWO WEEKS, I NEVER RECEIVED ANY LETTER FROM TOYOTA REGARDING OIL CONSUMPTION. ON LAST OIL CHANGE IN JUNE 2019 ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I TOOK CAR BACK TO THE DEALER THEY DIAGNOSED EXHAUST MANIFOLD NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT NEVER DISCLOSED IT IS DUE TO THE TOO MUCH OIL CONSUMPTION. RECENTLY, CAR IS CONSUMING TOO MUCH OIL AND CAR IS JERKING WHEN GAS IS PUSHED. FINALLY, I SEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS AN OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE WITH 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THEY ALSO CLAIM THAT THEY MAILED ME A LETTER IN 2015 WHICH I NEVER RECEIVED., RECEIVED OTHER THREE LETTERS ABOUT OTHER RECALLS FROM TOYOTA AND THESE LETTERS ARE ONLINE IN MY CAR PROFILE, NOT THE ONE ABOUT OIL CONSUMPTION. I ALWAYS TOOK MY CARE TO TOYOTA DEALER FOR OIL CHANGE. I HAVE HAD TO ADD OIL IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS, OFTEN TWICE BETWEEN CHANGES. AFTER BEING TOLD THERE WAS A RECALL OF THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE FROM A MECHANIC, I THEN FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS BEYOND THE LENGTH OF TIME TO GET IT REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL. I WAS THEN INFORMED THAT I SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA IN THE MAIL STATING THERE WAS A RECALL. I NEVER RECEIVED A LETTER ABOUT THIS RECALL. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN TOWN ABOUT THE ISSUE AND THEY SAID THEY COULD PERFORM AN OIL TEST ON IT TO SEE HOW MUCH IT WAS BURNING AFTER 1,500 MILES. UPON BRINGING IT BACK I WAS INFORMED THAT MY CAR HADN'T BURNED ENOUGH TO THEIR REQUIRED AMOUNT (AMOUNT NOT DISCLOSED TO ME) TO DO ANYTHING, BUT TOLD ME THAT I COULD ALWAYS COME BACK AND HAVE ANOTHER OIL TEST DONE. I FIND IT VERY DISTURBING THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE AND THAT THERE IS A CLAIM OF A LETTER BEING SENT TO ME WHEN I NEVER RECEIVED ONE. IT ALSO APPEARS THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS INDIVIDUALS WITH THIS SAME YEAR HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT IT. I AM WONDERING IF THERE HAS BEEN AN INVESTIGATION TO ANYTHING ABOUT THE SUPPOSED LETTERS THAT TOYOTA HAS CLAIMED TO MAIL OUT? THE OIL CONSUMPTION IS WAY TOO HIGH! MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTED ON OTHER ONLINE FORUM. I HAVE TO REFILL MY OIL EVERY 2-3 DAYS. I NOTICED THIS ISSUE SIGNIFICANTLY WHEN MY CAR BEGAN DRIVING WIERD ONLY 2 WEEKS AFTER AN OIL CHANGE & WHEN I WENT TO MY MECHANIC, HE SAID THERE WAS NO MORE OIL IN MY CAR. 2017 REGULAR OIL CHANGE I WAS TOLD OIL LEVEL WAS EXTREMELY LOW. NO EXPLANATION GIVEN TO ME. I WAS TOLD TO REGULARLY CHECK OIL LEVEL BETWEEN CHANGES. I HAVE BEEN ADDING OIL REGULARLY. UPON LOOKING FOR ANSWERS ON MY OWN, I FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE! I TALKED TO TOYOTA REP, AND HE ADMITTED THAT 2 LETTERS WERE MAILED TO ME, NONE OF WHICH I RECEIVED, REGARDING REPAIR OPTIONS BY TOYOTA. THIS OFFER EXPIRED IN 2018. I ASKED FOR ADDRESS, THEY DIDN'T HAVE THAT INFO. SO I ASKED IF ALL COMMUNICATIONS FROM TOYOTA COULD BE MADE BY EMAIL, THEY SAID NO. I FEEL EXTREMELY TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. I ALWAYS USED TOYOTA SERVICE TO AVOID PROBLEMS LIKE THIS. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS LACKING AND I FEEL I SHOULD STILL QUALIFY FOR A REPAIR BY TOYOTA.

THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WAS PERFORMED TWICE, BUT IT DID NOT PROVIDE A PERMANENT REMEDY. THE DEALER WAS ASKED SEVERAL TIMES TO PROVIDE FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. AFTER ADDING OIL TO THE VEHICLE, THE DEALER RECOMMENDED THAT THE ENGINE BE REBUILT. THE ENGINE HEAD WAS SENT FOR TESTING AND CHECKED FOR A VALVE STEM SEAL THAT MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

ON DEC. 27, 2018 WHILE DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY I HEARD A SEVERE/LOUD KNOCKING NOISE IN FRONT OF MY VEHICLE THAT I HAD NEVER HEARD BEFORE. I COULD STILL DRIVE HOWEVER THE VEHICLE HAD SLOWED DOWN AND BEGAN SHAKING. I HURRIED OFF THE EXPRESSWAY. I DECIDED TO TO GO TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THE STREET WAY AS I WAS IN THAT AREA. AT THAT TIME I WAS ADVISED THAT INTERNAL ENGINE DAMAGE HAD OCCURRED AND THE ENGINE WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED, NOTHING FURTHER.THE ESTIMATED COST WOULD BE $10,435. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO MY HOME.THEY LATER INDICATED VIA EMAIL THAT MY CASE WOULD BE FILED WITH TOYOTA MOTOR SALES U.S.A. INC. UNDER FILE#[XXX]. WHY DOES A 2008 CAMRY CE WITH 60,896 MILES BREAKDOWN WITHOUT WARNING. I DECIDED TO RESEARCH THE MATTER. I FOUND OUT THAT TOYOTA HAD A OIL CONSUMPTION DEFECT CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN 2014, ONE OF MANY, INDICATING 2006-2011 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES (INCLUDING CAMRY) HAD DEFECTIVE ENGINES THAT BURN EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL WHICH CAN CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE IN A MOVING VEHICLE. FURTHER, TOYOTA WAS AWARE OF THE DESIGN DEFECT, BUT STILL MANUFACTURED AND SOLD THEIR VEHICLES WITHOUT WARNING CONSUMERS. THEY ALSO FAILED TO WARN DRIVERS THAT THIS DEFECT WOULD CREATE SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUES. I CONTACTED TOYOTA WITH THIS INFORMATION TO NO AVAIL.
