I am reporting a safety-related transmission failure in my 2019 Toyota. The vehicle suddenly lost the ability to drive forward without any warning. There were no check engine lights, warning lights, or alerts before or during the failure. The vehicle would only go in reverse and became completely undrivable. At the time of the failure, my children and my elderly mother were in the vehicle, creating a serious safety risk. Had this occurred in traffic or at an intersection, it could have resulted in an accident. After the failure, I contacted over 30 transmission shops and mechanics, and none are willing to rebuild or repair the transmission due to known and recurring issues with this Toyota transmission model. I contacted Toyota directly and was provided a repair estimate of approximately $8,000, which is unreasonable for a 2019 vehicle and makes repair financially impossible. The vehicle was towed and remains undrivable. I am currently paying $30 per day for a rental vehicle, causing financial hardship. I am submitting this complaint so this issue is documented as a potential safety defect

The vehicle has experienced ongoing engine misfire issues while driving. The check engine light illuminated, and diagnostic testing identified a cylinder misfire (P0302). The vehicle shakes, runs rough, and has reduced power, especially during acceleration. These symptoms create a safety concern, as the loss of power and engine instability could affect the ability to safely merge, accelerate, or maintain speed in traffic. The issue has been confirmed by diagnostic scans performed by an independent service center. The problem appears to be persistent and not consistent with normal wear for a vehicle of this age and mileage. No collision has occurred, but the condition poses an ongoing safety risk while operating the vehicle. The issue has not yet been resolved by the manufacturer.

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the message indicating that the engine had overheated was displayed. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the water pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not covered under an Extended Warranty coverage related to the water pump failure. The failure mileage was 53,537.

2019 Toyota Camry VIN: [XXX] Issue: Blown head gasket and required engine replacement Mileage at failure: 116,598 approximately Mileage I am filing this complaint due to a sudden and significant engine failure in my 2019 Toyota Camry. Despite regular service at certified Toyota dealerships only things wasn’t serviced at the dealership was my brakes and tires, and a transmission flush in September 27, 2024. Other than that my recent visit to Bulter Toyota was March 21st 2025 which included a $334.17 maintenance visit in March 2025 and my car was good at the time I was told. Now a month later [XXX] my vehicle experienced a blown head gasket with no prior warning or indication of trouble just a check engine light one day [XXX] it never overheated. The issue was diagnosed on April 21, 2025 at Bulter Toyota. Currently renting a car from Bulter Toyota for $42.00 a day my car has been there for 9days The dealership has stated that the engine must be replaced at a cost of $5,335. Additionally, the technician made a concerning statement suggesting my car “looked like it had been in an accident,” even though the vehicle has never been in any collision. This further raised questions about internal defects or manufacturing issues. Toyota Corporate has been contacted, is currently conducting an internal investigation into this matter. However, I am submitting this complaint to NHTSA to ensure it is formally documented outside of Toyota’s internal review process. This is especially important given the pattern of similar complaints involving 2019 Toyota Camrys with the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, including reports of overheating, coolant leaks, and head gasket failures. I am requesting a full investigation into potential defects related to engine performance and safety in 2019 Toyota Camry models. If a recall is later issued, I respectfully request to be included for possible reimbursement or remedy. Check engine light went on and the car’s temperature gage started going up rapidly. Pulled to the side of the road and turned the car off. The problem was the electric water pump and Thermostat which I bought at Toyota parts, the car only has 29,090 miles on it.

Check engine light- P28AE “Engine Coolant Bypass Valve B”. Checkered Flag Toyota Virginia Beach, VA states that it’s been a huge issue at their service center and that they repair several cars, weekly, with this error. The rep told me that this should be a recall and can’t sure why it’s not, due to the sheer volume of this issue

I marked engine on the above as I did Not see anything about gas pedal acceleration. At a slow speed turning a sharp right to enter a drive through restaurant, I had my right foot on the brake. The car suddenly accelerated on its own, causing me to jump a curb & lose control. I landed between the restaurant building & drive through, taking out the signs & drive through. It was sudden & a nightmare. Busted both front tires & We had to get a flatbed truck to remove. Some employees there remarked that I missed a pole by a few inches. They helped me out of the car, taking me inside the restaurant. I was crying & very emotional, but explained what happened. I phoned my husband immediately & he came. I didn’t hit another car or hurt anybody. I was stoved up & shook up, but otherwise ok. I did get a back X-ray later because of pain, but thankfully no compressed fracture. The police was called & took my registration & helped get a tow truck. I explained what happened. My husband asked that it be taken to the a Toyota dealership, but it was not as they do not have a repair shop there. The car is in a local shop for repair that the adjuster recommended. Have not received the first part for it as yet. Insurance adjuster says $8500 in damage by phone, but we do not have a copy of this appraisal as yet. We will need to take it to Toyota for testing as soon as repairs are done & driveable, but regardless, this is really what happened & I will be afraid to drive this car again. This is vey dangerous & I could have been killed or killed somebody. We bought our car new in Early 2019 & I really liked it. I’m posting this now because Toyota should want to know this information asap for the safety of their customers!

I was driving the car and heard a noise coming from the front and the car started stalling. Then the car stopped completely and would not turn on anymore. I got out and there was oil on the ground. A mechanic looked at the car and noted that pieces of the engine shattered and the was a crack on the engine, and there was a lot of oil that had leaked. The car has only 30,000 miles on it.

UPON ACCELERATION VEHICLE HESITATES IF CAR IS STARTED FROM A COMPLETE STOP YOU PRESS ON THE GAS PEDAL AND IT TAKES LIKE 1 TO 5 SECONDS BEFORE YOU FEEL ANY ACCELERATION.

WHEN THE CAR STOPS AND THEN GETS READY TO TAKE OFF THERE IS HESITATION WHEN APPLYING GAS. CAR OFTEN LAGS. DOES NOT ACCELERATE CONSISTENTLY AS IT SHOULD. PRIMARILY OCCURS AFTER CAR IS MOVING SLOWLY AND SEEMS AS IF THE CAR IS STRUGGLING TO TAKE OFF, THIS HAPPENS UPON STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND TAKING OFF AND UPON DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY THEN TRYING TO GET UP TO THE SPEED WITH TRAFFIC. *TR

VEHICLE LACKS POWER AFTER SLOWING DOWN AT A YIELD SIGNS OR CORNERS, (NOT EVERY TIME) WHEN YOU TRY TO INCREASE SPEED IT TAKES A SECOND FOR THE POWER TO INCREASE. ON HIGHWAYS, THE RPMS WILL INCREASE OR DECREASE 100-700 AT TIMES WITH OR WITHOUT THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED SEEMS TO BE A FUEL SUPPLY ISSUE. BEEN TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS AND THEY CAN NEVER DUPLICATE THE ISSUE IN THE SERVICE CENTERS. STARTED RIGHT BEFORE THE 15,000 MILE SERVICE AND CONTINUES NOW AT 30,000 MILE SERVICE. *TR

I RENTED A 2019 TOYOTA CAMRY FOR 9 DAYS. MANY TIMES WHILE ACCELERATING THE ENGINE LOST POWER. IT WAS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS WHEN ATTEMPTING TURNS IN FRONT OF ONGOING TRAFFIC. THE CAR WOULD START TO GO THEN JUST SEEM TO DIE AS I WAS MAKING THE TURN. THEN ENGINE LIGHTS WOULD COME ON AND IT WOULD JUST START COASTING. THE CAR NEVER STALLED IT JUST WOULD NOT GO. I LEARNED VERY QUICKLY TO NOT THINK I COULD MAKE A TURN INTO THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC SAFELY UNLESS I HAD ENOUGH ROOM TO COAST ACROSS THE INTERSECTION. ALSO IT IWAS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN TRYING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC. I LOOKED THIS UP ON THE INTERNET AND IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH CAMRY'S BUT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THERE IS NOT A RECALL OR, AT LEAST, A INVSTIGATION STARTED BY NHTSA.

Jun 2019

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2019 TOYOTA CAMRY IN FEBRUARY. I'VE NOTICED THAT WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE SEEMS TO HESITATE AND JERK WHEN ACCELERATING. THIS IS A CAUSE FOR CONCERN BECAUSE WHEN SLOWING DOWN AND GIVING THE VEHICLE GAS, IT CAUSES THE RPMS TO SHOOT UP AND THE CAR JERKS FORWARD. THIS CAN CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO STRIKE A VEHICLE OR ANYTHING IN FRONT OF IT. IT IS NOT ANY DIFFERENT IF THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY OR IN MOTION. IN EITHER SITUATION THE VEHICLE IS HESITATING AND JERKING WHILE ACCELERATING. IT IS ALSO DANGEROUS TO TURN INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. IF THE CAR STRUGGLES TO ACCELERATE IT CAN CAUSE A COLLISION.
