The contact stated that the failure was intermittent but had become a recurring failure. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The contact had requested vehicle history from the manufacturer and determined that the Electronic Control Unit had been replaced in 2011 under NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V384000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 131,000.

THREE YEARS AFTER BUYING NEW CAR ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, GOT IT CHECKED AT DEALER WAS TOLD IT'S P0741. I WAS TOLD BY SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THERE WAS "NO RECALL AND IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT." I ASKED WHAT IT WAS, WAS TOLD IT'S CONVERTER, BUT NOT TO WORRY IF NO PROBLEMS. I'VE TRIED CALLING TOYOTA FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW, TO NO AVAIL. OIL SLUDGE BUILD UP WHICH CAUSED 1ST CYLINDER PISTON TO BREAK CAUSING TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE AND ENGINE NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN ON HIGHWAY HAD 68,000 MILES. SAW A WHITE PLUME OF SMOKE AND ENGINE DIED. CAR REQUIRED TOWING TO AUTO MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED PROBLEM.
MY CAR HAD A RECALL COMPLETED ON THE ECM IN 2011. NOW IN 2018 MY ECM IS SHORTING OUT CAUSING MY ENGINE TO SHUT OFF WHILE I AM DRIVING. IN ORDER TO START UP THE ENGINE AGAIN I HAVE TO PULL OVER, PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURN THE KEY AGAIN. ONE TIME THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS STOPPED. THE OTHER TIME THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING. TOYOTA REPORTED THAT BECAUSE THE RECALL HAD ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND THE REPAIR HAD TO BE COMPLETED AT MY EXPENSE. THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE MY CAR SAFE TO DRIVE AGAIN IS TO HAVE A NEW ECM INSTALLED.

TOOK CAR TO SERVICE CENTER AND THEY TOLD ME IT IS THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE SHOWING UP AS BEING DEFECTIVE OR BAD. VEHICLE ONLY HAS 44K MILES.

I STARTED MY CAR AND IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTING THE ENGINE RPM'S WENT FROM 0-5000 RPM AND WOULD NOT COME BACK DOWN. I SHUT OFF THE CAR AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND TRIED AGAIN.... SAME THING. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. ON APRIL 28 2014 I RESERVED A RENTAL CAR FROM PRICELESS RENTAL CAR IN INGLEWOOD CA. UPON RECEIVING THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS NO INSPECTION OR ANY KIND OF WALK-AROUND TO ENSURE ITS CONDITION. I DROVE IT FROM LAX TO SAN FRANCISCO, AND DURING THE ENTIRE JOURNEY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND MY GAS MILEAGE EFFICIENCY WAS DROPPING RAPIDLY. DEAR OFFICER, I BOUGHT THIS CAR (TOYOTA COROLLA 2007) IN DEC 2012 FROM A PRIVATE PARTY. THE CAR WAS TOTALLY RUNNING FINE. I HAVE BEEN CHANGING THE OIL EVERY 3 MONTHS. LAST MONTH, I STARTED NOTICING WHITE SMOKE COMING OUT FROM THE REAR EXHAUST PIPE AND THE TOYOTA DEALER SAID IT WOULD BE O2 SENSOR AND CHANGED IT (CHARGED $400). I STARTED NOTICING WHITE SMOKE AGAIN AND THIS TIME THEY SAID THERE IS A OIL LEAKAGE AND FIXED IT (CHARGED $450). THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE WHOLE BOTTOM PART OF THE ENGINE IS FULL OF OIL SLUDGE AND THAT WOULD TAKE $4000 TO FIX. ON 9/12/2012 THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I DROVE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE SERVICE REP SAID THAT THEY RESET THE SENSOR AND EVERYTHING SHOULD BE OK. ON JAN 15,13 I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR THE 60,000 MILES MAINTENANCE. ONLY THING THAT WAS SAID TO BE FOUND WAS THE FAN BELT WAS NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. ON JAN 24 WHILE DRIVING TO THE USAF BASE, THE CAR STARTED MAKING NOISE AND JERKING. WHEN I STOPPED AT THE GATE TO SHOW MY I.D. THE GUARD TOLD ME THAT IT SOUNDED LIKE MY ENGINE WAS DYING, AND GO TO THE MECHANIC ASAP. I TURNED AROUND AND WENT STRAIGHT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND IT TOOK ME 45 MIN TO GET TO TOYOTA BC THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST 20 MPH (THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A 10 MIN DRIVE). THE SERVICE REP TOLD ME THAT THE AIR FLOW METER SENSOR WAS DIRTY AND FROZEN AND THEY CLEANED AND RESET IT. ON FRIDAY FEB 1ST THE CAR WAS TOWED BACK TO TOYOTA BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT DRIVE OUT THE DRIVE WAY. TOYOTA REP RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND SAID THE COMPUTER ENGINE WAS FAULTY AND A NEW ECM WOULD NEED TO BE PUT IN. THIS CAR ONLY HAS 66,000 MILES! THE REP TOLD ME THAT THERE WERE RECALLS ON THE 2005-2008 MODEL TOYOTA COROLLAS AND THAT I NEED TO GET A RECALL LETTER FROM TOYOTA USA SO THEY CAN FIX THE CAR (I NEVER GOT THE LETTER THAT WAS SUPPOSEDLY SENT OUT SEPT 2010). I CALLED TOYOTA CORPORATE ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS ON FEB 4 AND WAS TOLD THAT I COULD NOT GET A LETTER FAXED OR EMAILED HERE TO GERMANY TO GET MY CAR REPAIRED. A RUDE REPRESENTATIVE NAME [XXX] SAID THAT IT WOULD TAKE AN UNKNOWN AMOUNT OF TIME TO GET A RECALL LETTER SENT THROUGH THE MAIL. I DON'T HAVE AN UNKNOWN AMOUNT OF TIME. WE WERE NOTIFIED LAST SUMMER/FALL THAT THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL ON SOME 2005-2008 TOYOTA COROLLA AND MATRIX MODELS. THE LETTER STATES THAT WE WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN PARTS BECAME AVAILABLE AND THAT DUE TO THE POSSIBLE FAILURE OF THE ECM -ENGINE CONTROL MODULE -(CRACKS ON WELDS) THE ENGINE MAY STOP WORKING WHILE THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN. THEREFORE WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE IT EXCEPT AT SLOW SPEEDS CONSIDERING SAFETY AND HOPING OUR CAR WAS NOT ONE THAT FELL UNDER THE RECALL. CONSIDERING WE NEVER GOT ANOTHER LETTER (EXPECTED NOV 2010) WE BELIEVED WE MUST BE EXEMPT FROM THE RECALL, BUT YESTERDAY WE RECEIVED THE NOTICE THAT THE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE SO WE WENT IN TO OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER SEEGER TOYOTA IN ST ROBERT MO WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED OUR CAR FALLS UNDER THIS SERIOUS SAFETY RECALL. THE DEALER NOW IS SAYING THEY DON'T HAVE THE PART AVAILABLE AND THEY WILL "CALL" US WHEN THEY HAVE IT IN. HOW LONG IS ACCEPTABLE ? DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE TOYOTA FOLLOWS THROUGH?
