TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, A LOUD POP SOUND WAS HEARD AND THE VEHICLE JERKED VIOLENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR FRAME WAS SEVERELY CORRODED AND DETACHED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE WHOLE FRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DEVELOPED A PERFORATION IN THE FRAME TO THE POINT THAT THE FRAME WAS RUSTED AND CORRODED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN AN UNKNOWN MANUFACTURER RECALL. MONTHS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE FRAME WAS COATED WITH A SOLUTION AS A TEMPORARY REMEDY. ON APRIL 8, 2015, I TOOK MY 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC I FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE FRAME WAS SO SEVERELY RUSTED THAT IT WAS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT PERFORM THE REPAIRS. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME THAT ANY ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE FRAME WOULD STILL RENDER IT UNSAFE. THEY ALSO CHECKED FOR RECALLS/BUYBACKS ON THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS NOT ELIGIBLE. I WAS PLANNING A 2000 MILE TRIP WITH LOAD. HAD I PROCEEDED WITH THE TRIP WITHOUT KNOWING THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE, I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN GRAVE DANGER. *TR

I PURCHASED MY 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA 4X4 11/2013 AT A SMALL DEALERSHIP. I CHECKED THE VEHICLE OUT PRETTY GOOD BEFORE PURCHASE AND FOUND LITE SURFACE RUST ON FRAME AND THOUGHT NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. 12/2014 I WAS WORKING ON EMERGENCY BRAKE, DO TO STICKING AND NOTICES A LARGE RUST HOLE AT THE REAR LEAF SPRING. I STARTED LOOKING ON THE INTERNET FOR LOCAL FRAME REPAIR COMPANY'S AND FOUND OUT ABOUT THE PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR TACOMA. I CALLED TOYOTA SERVICE AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE THE WARRANTY RAN OUT ON FRAME RUST. I CALLED A LOCAL TOYOTA TO BUY A NEW FRAME, THEY TOLD ME THEY DON'T MANUFACTURE THAT YEAR ANYMORE. I TOOK IT TO A FRAME REPAIR SHOP AND THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD COST $2600 TO FIX THE REAR HALF SECTION OF THE FRAME AND TO REPLACE THE FRONT SECTION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE WHOLE FRAME, IF THEY LOCATE ONE USED FROM OUT WEST AND REPAIR WOULD BE $6000. IT REALLY SEEMS THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE HERE AND THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL ON THE FRAME. THE TOYOTA TACOMA 1999 THAT I PURCHASED HAD A 15 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY DUE TO A DEFECTIVE FRAME SUSCEPTIBLE TO RUST. THE WARRANTY ENDED ON 4/10/2014 BUT I DIDN'T PURCHASE THE VEHICLE UNTIL 7/27/2014. THE DEALER DID NOT DISCLOSE THE POOR FRAME CONDITION AND ALLOWED ME TO PURCHASE AN UNSAFE VEHICLE AT THE KBB VALUE. I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPAIR THE DEFECT OR BUY A NEW VEHICLE. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT NHTSA CAN DO? IS THERE ANY WAY THAT TOYOTA CAN BE ASKED TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY BY ONE MORE YEAR? WE RECENTLY DISCOVERED A LARGE RUST HOLE IN THE FRAME IN FRONT OF THE REAR WHEEL OF OUR 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA. AFTER TALKING TO OUR MECHANIC ABOUT REPAIR, WE DISCOVERED THAT TOYOTA HAD ISSUED A WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR FRAME DUE ACCELERATED RUSTING OF THE FRAME AND MANUFACTURER DEFECT, BUT WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED. WE CONTACTED TOYOTA, AND THEY SAID THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED ON JUNE 10, 2014. APPARENTLY, THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD BEEN CONTACTED, BUT NOT US. WE PURCHASED THE TRUCK ON 2/20/2013. OUR MECHANIC HAS WARNED AGAINST DRIVING THE VEHICLE DUE TO FRAME ROT. TOYOTA IS NOT WILLING TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH WE WERE UNAWARE OF IT AND NOT NOTIFIED. SO, WE NOW HAVE A VEHICLE THAT RUNS WELL AND IS IN GOOD SHAPE MECHANICALLY AND BODY-WISE, BUT WE HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT DRIVING IT SAFELY ON THE HIGHWAY. *TR

WE JUST LEARNED RECENTLY ABOUT THE ISSUE WITH THE TOYOTA FRAMES RUSTING OUT AND WHEN WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO TOYOTA TO GET IT LOOKED AT THEY RESPONDED THAT THE 15 YEAR FRAME WARRANTY EXPIRED ON 5-27-2014. WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED BY TOYOTA ABOUT THIS ISSUE, NOR WERE WE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM UNTIL RECENTLY WHEN A FRIEND HAD AN ISSUE AND TOLD US ABOUT IT. IF TOYOTA WOULD HAVE NOTIFIED US WE WOULD HAVE HAD THE FRAME INSPECTED PRIOR TO THE WARRANTY PERIOD EXPIRING. THEY DID NOTIFY ME IN 2007 OR SO ABOUT A RECALL ON MY 1990 TOYOTA BUT NOT THIS ONE FOR MY 1999 WHICH IS VERY A SERIOUS ISSUE. *TR

ON MARCH 26, 2014, I LEARNED BY WORD OF MOUTH ABOUT THE RUST CORROSION PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA TACOMA'S. ON THAT DAY I CONTACTED TOYOTA TO VERIFY THE INFORMATION I RECEIVED. I WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA ABOUT THE "RUST CORROSION PROGRAM" AND THAT MY TACOMA WOULD NEED TO BE INSPECTED AND THAT I HAD UNTIL SEPT. 2014 TO GET THIS COMPLETED, AS THAT IS WHEN THE PROMOTION EXPIRED FOR MY TRUCK. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT A LETTER NOTIFYING ME WENT OUT IN 2008 AND I WAS PROVIDED THE ADDRESS IT WAS SEND, WHICH WAS NOT THE ADDRESS WHERE MY TRUCK WAS REGISTERED IN 2008. THUS I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY INFORMATION FROM TOYOTA ABOUT THE PROGRAM. ON APRIL 14, 2014, THE FRAME ON MY 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA WAS INSPECTED BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. UPON COMPLETION OF THE INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT MY TACOMA WAS "UNSAFE" TO DRIVE DUE TO A LARGE RUST HOLE ON THE FRAME FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE FUEL TANK TO THE REAR OF THE TANK. WHEN I REPORTED THIS INFORMATION TO TOYOTA THEY TOLD ME THAT THE PROMOTION HAD EXPIRED FOR MY TRUCK. I REFERENCED THE INFORMATION THAT I INITIALLY RECEIVED FROM TOYOTA AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE INFORMATION THAT I RECEIVED WAS WRONG AND THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING FOR ME. I TOLD THEM THAT I HAD NEVER RECEIVED ANY INFORMATION FROM TOYOTA REGARDING THE RUST ISSUE, SO HOW WOULD I KNOW TO DO ANYTHING. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE "SORRY" AND THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I CONTACTED THE EXECUTIVE OFFICES AND AGAIN WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE AND THEY WERE SORRY. SO NOW I HAVE AN UNSAFE TRUCK AND TOYOTA IS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. *JS

WHILE BREAKING SLOWLY COMING TO A STOP , I LOST MY ALL MY BREAK CONTROLS. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE WITH NO FATALITIES. THE TOW TRUCK BROUGHT ME TO MY MECHANICS FACILITY AND INDICATED THAT THE TRUCKS STEEL FRAME AND PARTS RECEDED BACKWARDS PLACING PRESSURE ON BREAK LINES UNDER TRUCK TO SNAP. HE SHOWED ME THAT RUSTING OF THE FRAME CAUSED THE PROBLEM. THE CARRIAGE MOVED BACK BY 4" DUE TO RUSTING AND DETERIORATION. I CALLED TACOMA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY SAID NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO HELP PAY FOR MY EXPENSES. IT'S COSTING ME $1,750 TO REPLACE FRAME AND REPAIR DAMAGES TO BREAKS AND OTHER COMPONENTS. *TR

I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN 02/11, FROM MY BROTHER. I HEARD ABOUT A RECALL AND CALLED BETTEN TOYOTA, NOW TOYOTA OF GRAND RAPIDS, BUT WAS TOLD THE VIN WAS NOT AFFECTED BY THIS RECALL. EARLY IN 2014, I NOTICED THE CAB CORNER HAD DROPPED DOWN. I LOOKED UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE AND SAW THE FRAME WAS RUSTED. I CALLED TOYOTA OF GR; THEY TOLD ME TO CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE. I CALLED TOYOTA'S MAIN OFFICE (CUSTOMER SERVICE); THEY ASSIGNED ME A CASE NUMBER AND TOLD ME TO BRING IT TO A LOCAL DEALER AND HAVE THEM CHECK IT. I BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA OF GR WHERE THEIR MECHANIC DEEMED IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE. TOYOTA OF GR SENT THIS REPORT TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE. ON 4/24/14 I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT "TOYOTA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON YOUR TACOMA FOR A PERIOD OF 15 YEARS WITH NO MILEAGE LIMITATION FROM THE VEHICLE'S IN SERVICE DATE, FOR PERFORATION OF THE VEHICLE'S FRAME CAUSED BY RUST CORROSION. BASED ON A RECENT INSPECTION OF YOUR TACOMA, IT APPEARS THAT THE FRAME IS INDEED PERFORATED. AS A RESULT, TOYOTA IS PREPARED TO REPURCHASE YOUR TACOMA." ON 4/25/14 I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A. INC. STATING THAT THEY WOULD REPURCHASE MY VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THE CONFIRMATION THAT MY VEHICLE COMPLIES WITH ALL OF THE CONDITIONS OF THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. I WAS ASKED TO SIGN AN AGREEMENT ACCEPTING THEIR REPURCHASE AMOUNT AND SEND IT BACK TO THEM WITH A COPY OF THE TITLE. THIS WAS COMPLETED ON 4/28/14. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM TOYOTA 4/30/14 STATING THAT THE TRUCK DID NOT QUALIFY BECAUSE OF THE DATE IT WAS PUT INTO SERVICE. I FOUND OUT I MISSED IT BY FOUR MONTHS. IF THEY WOULD HAVE TOLD ME WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE 3 YEARS EARLIER THAT IT DID QUALIFY, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF AT THAT TIME. THEY HAD MY VIN BEFORE THEY SENT THE LETTER OUT ON 4/25/14 WHEN THEY SAID THEY WOULD BUY IT BACK. WE WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR HELP WITH THIS SITUATION. *TR

WE OWN A 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA WITH THE RUSTED FRAME RECALL. WE HAD IT INSPECTED IN 2008 AT RICK HENDRICK TOYOTA IN FAYETTEVILLE, NC IT HAD SURFACE RUST BUT THEY SAID NOTHIN TO WORRY ABOUT. IT IS NOW 2014 AND THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR LEAF SPRING FRONT MOUNT ROTTED RIGHT OFF AND THE FRAME IS CRACKED RIGHT THROUGH. TOYOTA WILL NOT HONOR THE FRAME REPLACEMENT EVEN THOUGH THE INSPECTION WAS DONE IN 2008 AND THEY FOUND NOTHING WELL I HAVE PICTURES OF NOTHING LEFT OF MY TRUCKS FRAME AND NOT IT TOTALLY UNSAFE TO DRIVE . TL* THE CONTACT SUBMITTED AN EMAIL AND REQUESTED THAT THE OFFICIAL IVOQ BE WRITTEN VERBATIM TO HIS SUBMITTED EMAIL: SEVERAL WEEKS AGO, I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA USA STATING THEIR SERVICE CAMPAIGN ON TACOMA'S FRAMES RUSTING IN SPECIFIC COLD CLIMATES. I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS AND CONTACTED A-1 TOYOTA IN NEW HAVEN, CT WHERE THEY INSPECTED MY TRUCK. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT THE FRAME LITERALLY SAGGED AT THE RUST PENETRATION POINTS WHILE ON THE LIFT. THEY GAVE ME A LOANER CAR THE NEXT DAY AND SAID THEY WILL CONTACT ME REGARDING PURCHASING THE TRUCK BACK BECAUSE THE FRAME RUST WAS SO BAD. ANOTHER COUPLE OF DAYS PASSED AND I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM THE COMPANY (ISG) HANDLING THE PROGRAM. THEY INFORMED ME THAT AFTER THEY RAN A CARFAX AND SAW A SALVAGE TITLE IN THE PAST, THAT THEY WILL NOT HONOR THE SERVICE CAMPAIGN FOR MY TRUCK. I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK ON 6/12/07 AND PUT A LOT OF MONEY INTO HER. NOW FOR THE REALLY BIZARRE PART...... IN JAN OF 2010, I WAS FOLLOWING A LOCAL FELLOW (WHO WAS INJURED IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT YEARS AGO) ON HIS 3-WHEELED BIKE SO HE COULD REPAIR A FLAT TIRE. I HAD MY FLASHERS AND HEADLIGHTS ON AND GOING APROX 5MPH. I WAS TRYING TO PROTECT HIM AS HE RODE ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (APROX 9:00 AM). I LOOKED INTO MY REARVIEW MIRROR AND NOTICED A VOLVO XC-90 COMING UP BEHIND ME FAST. THE SPEED LIMIT WAS 30MPH AND HE WAS EASILY DOING 50. HE REAR-ENDED ME AND PUSHED MY TRUCK UP NEXT TO WHERE THE FELLOW WAS ON HIS BIKE. THE OTHER DRIVER WAS CITED FOR THE ACCIDENT. IF I WAS NOT IN MY TRUCK, BUT A SEDAN HE WOULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURY, BUT HE ACTUALLY RODE UP UNDER MY TRUCK. THE INSURANCE COMPANY TOTALED IT AND I BOUGHT IT BACK AND HAD IT REPAIRED. A SECOND-HAND BED, SOME BODY WORK, EXHAUST ITEMS AND BUMPER WAS ALL SHE NEEDED. I HAD TO HAVE IT FLAT-BEDDED TO CT DMV FOR A FULL SAFETY INSPECTION AND TO THE DEALER FOR AIR-BAG RECERTIFICATION BEFORE I COULD EVEN RE-REGISTER IT. THE TITLE NOW STATES "REBUILT TITLE ONLY" ON IT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRAME WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED WHICH RESULTED IN A LARGE HOLE DUE TO THE RUST CORROSION. THE MANUFACTURER ISSUED A VOLUNTARY RECALL PERTAINING TO THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE PHOTOGRAPHS WERE TAKEN OF THE FRAME. I HAVE A 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA WHICH ONLY HAS 30,000 MILES ON IT AND TOOK IT IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE TO FIND OUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAD PUT A HAMMER THROUGH THE FRAME WHERE IT HAD RUSTED OUT. NOW THE DEALER HAS MY TRUCK AND SAID THAT IT IS NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO BE REPAIRED BECAUSE THEY DO NOT MAKE THIS FRAME ANYMORE. 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO FRAME RUST PERFORATION *TGW WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED, RUST WAS FOUND AND DOCUMENTED AND PICTURES WERE E-MAILED TO TOYOTA. TOYOTA DENIED THE CONSUMERS REQUEST TO RE-PURCHASE THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER WROTE TOYOTA TWO LETTERS ASKING THEM TO RECONSIDER AND TO HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AGAIN. I HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA MOTOR CO. ALONG WITH 814,000 OTHER OWNERS OF TOYOTA TACOMA'S BUILT BETWEEN 1995-2000 STATING THAT OUR FRAME RUST WARRANTY HAS BEEN EXTENDED FOR 15 YEARS FROM DATE OF ORIGINAL PURCHASE AS A RESULT OF A FRAME RUST BECAUSE A PROCESS THAT WAS NOT DONE BY THE FRAME SUPPLIER TO TOYOTA. IF FRAME IS FOUND TO HAVE RUST TOYOTA MOTOR CO. WILL BUYBACK VEHICLE AT 150% OF HIGHEST KBB RETAIL VALUE. TOYOTA EXPECTS TO BUYBACK APPROX. 50% OF VEHICLES STILL ON THE ROAD. MOST OF THESE VEHICLES WILL BE FROM THE CENTRAL AND NORTHEASTERN PARTS OF THE US BUT THEY HAVE BOUGHT BACK VEHICLES IN ALL PARTS OF THE NATION INCLUDING CALIFORNIA. THIS CAMPAIGN BEGAN IN MID-2008. TL* THE CONTACTS OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, AN UNUSUAL NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE FLY WHEEL WAS CRACKED. REPAIRS WERE MADE ACCORDINGLY. ONE YEAR LATER, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THE UNDER CARRIAGE WAS ROTTED, AS WELL AS THE MUFFLER. THE PARTIAL UNKNOWN REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 113,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 170,000.

RECENTLY SPOKE WITH SEVERAL TOYOTA TACOMA OWNERS WHO RELATED FRAME RUST PROBLEM. CHECKED TRUCK AND FOUND RUST ON FRAME(FINGERS WENT THROUGH FRAME IN SPOTS. TOOK VEHICLE TO TOYOTA SERVICE AND WAS TOLD NOT TO DRIVE TRUCK DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST ON FRAME. THEN THEY RETURNED THE TRUCK TO ME TO DRIVE HOME?? TO RETURN IN TWO DAYS WHEN THEY WOULD HAVE A LOANER TRUCK FOR ME. RETURNED TRUCK TO TOYOTA AND AFTER A HUGE HASSLE THEY ARRANGED TO RENTAL VEHICLE FOR ME TO DRIVE. NOW TOYOTA DEALER HAS KEPT THE TRUCK BECAUSE IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I AM WAITING FOR SOMEONE FROM TOYOTA TO CONTACT ME - HAVE BEEN TOLD I QUALIFY FOR A BUYOUT. THE DEALER/SERVICE DEPT. HAS NOW WASHED THEIR HANDS OF THE PROBLEM, TELLING ME I HAVE TO WAIT FOR TOYOTA TO CONTACT ME BUT HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE - WEEKS MAYBE.
