I was driving home in my 2010 Ford Edge that has150,000 miles on it at the speed of 55 mph when it stopped accelerating and then just shut down. It did not overheat, there were no alarms, alerts or lights that went off on the car. After coasting to the side of the road I got out and looked under the hood of my car I noticed that the antifreeze was leaking. My husband was able to add anti freeze to the vehicle and we drove home and parked it until we could find a mechanic that could figure out what happened. I called mechanics in the area and explained what happened. The local mechanics we spoke to stated that it sounded like the water pump went and that they were not comfortable doing the repair due to the amount of labor required. I found a mechanic willing to work on my truck and had my Ford Edge towed to his shop. After looking it over I was told the water pump leaked into the engine which the dealership said was catastrophic and that I needed a whole new engine and water pump. The technician said it may have been leaking into the engine for several days without warning. A water pump should be a simple repair, however the way that it happened caused engine failure and requires an entire engine replacement. My truck no longer functions or operates in any capacity. I believe this engine failure was the direct result of the location of the water pump which was "internally" in the engine. This is a poor vehicle design and a safety concern for Ford. Total cost for this repair is $8,300. At this time the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacture, police or insurance representatives.

Jul 2022

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 MPH, the engine temperature gauge indicated that the engine was overheating. The vehicle was later driven to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine was damaged due to a faulty internal water pump which had caused coolant to mix with the engine oil. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 117,000.

Jul 2022

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, an abnormal noise was heard coming from the engine compartment. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that he pulled over on the side of the roadway, opened the hood, and noticed that the antifreeze reservoir container was empty. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was diagnosed as a defective water pump that needed replacement. The contact stated that the repair was not completed because the dealer could not guarantee that the engine was not damaged. The vehicle was not repaired but was towed back to the residence. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. A case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 148,000.

We take good care of our cars and we do all required maintenance and oil changes but we are now facing a water pump failure that caused my engine to fail without any warring. On Wednesday March 9th I was passing a Semi Truck on a County Road and I heard a pop then lost all power and smoke came from under my hood. I had a guarding angel with me that day because there was another Semi truck approaching me in the passing lane and both Semi trucks slowed way down so that I was able to pull over. I saw my life flash before my eyes. This repair is going to cost us $4,700.00 or more if they should find any additional damage to my engine once they get all the parts to fix the car. How can a modern day car cost $4,700.00 to fix a water pump that caused the engine failure and overheat without A SINGLE WARNING!!! It seems like maybe Ford should look into recommending or insist that these internal WATER pumps be serviced/replaced at a reasonable mileage point maybe 80,000 or 100,000 miles to prevent a catastrophic loss. Water pumps will never out last an engine so getting them replaced early would help protect the engine and other damage that could happen. Just 8 days before my engine failed my car was in a Ford dealership garage for Oil Change, a cooling system flushing, belts and spark plugs replaced, not sure why at that time there was not something said about replacing the water pump? I know that The Ford Company is well aware of this issue so why would this information not be passed along to all dealership so that the service/maintenance garage personal know what to do to prevent this from happening. I would like to help prevent this issue from happening to anyone else. Next time someone might die, I almost did because of the engine failure on a simple water pump .

8.16.21was driving home, no lights, no warnings, no smoke nothing no indication of any kind and I lost all power to operate the vehicle. I was unable to start the car and up to this point car was running fine, had car towed to local mechanic after inspecting the car mechanic found water pump blew up and pully ruptured filling my entire engine with coolant and now I am out of a car due to the engine being destroyed. After extensive reviewing it appears this is a known issue with the 2007-2010 Ford Edges and Ford has yet to step up to the plate and address this known issue. Look on Facebook under Ford Motor Company and see how many other owners are having this issue. How can you run a business knowing this happens and then not being able to back it up by fixing the issue. I could have had another 4-5 years with my car and now I have to have burden and cost of finding a new car due to negligence on Fords part. I truly enjoyed my Ford Edge however in the future I will no longer drive any type of Ford car or Lincoln knowing this is how you treat known issues. I'm just glad it was not -30degrees out and this happened. Shame on Ford. I will also spread the word about this issue and to anyone else thinking of buying a Ford. I have the estimate for a new engine let me know when the check will be in the mail to have my car repaired!!!

THE FORD 3,5L DURATEC ENGINE WATER PUMP CAUSED COOLANT TO LEAK INTO THE ENGINE AND IS CURRENTLY BREAKING DOWN MY MOTOR. AS COOLANT & ENGINE OIL DON'T MIX, SO I HAVE TO REPLACE IT. WILL COST ME MORE THAN THE SUV ITSELF, SO GOING TO JUNK IT AND BEWARE ANYBODY WITH ANY FORD EDGE WITH THAT 3.5L DURATEC ENGINE WITH THE INTERNAL WATER PUMP. IT WILL FAIL AND BY TIME YOU NOTICE IT, IT'S TOO LATE. CAUSE MY SUV TO STALL & SHUT OFF NUMEROUS TIMES BECAUSE THE SENSOR ARE OFF BECAUSE OF THE COOLANT LEAKING INSIDE THE MOTOR.

I HAVE A 2010 FORD EDGE WITH 38,153 MILES. IN THE LAST ONW MONTH I HAVE HAD THE TORQUE CONVERTER REPLACED (UNDER WARRANTY) AND NOW I JUST HAD THE THROTTLE BODY AND MOTOR ASY. REPLACED FOR $691.03. I SMELLED GASOLINE AND THE ENGINE HESITATED SO, I TOOK IT INTO AUTONATION IN DELRAY, FL. FOR REPAIR. THE SERVICE PERSON TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND I SHOULD KEEP MY RECEIPT FOR A RECALL IN THE FUTURE. I WAS LUCKY THAT THE CAR DID NOT EXPLODE WITH THE FUEL FUMES. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL OF THIS CONDITION. *JS

DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY FOR ABOUT AN HOUR, I GOT OFF OF THE FREEWAY AND A COUPLE OF STOP LIGHTS LATER MY CAR SPUTTERED AND SHUT DOWN. I LOOKED AT THE TEMP GAUGE AND SAW I WAS OVERHEATED. I RECEIVED NO WARNING OR ALERTS ON MY DASHBOARD. I LET IT COOL FOR FEW MINUTES AND WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE ROAD INTO A PARKING LOT. MY RADIATOR OVERFLOW WAS EMPTY. I LET IT COOL SOME MORE AND PUT IN 1 1/2 GALLONS OF COOLANT. I STARTED THE ENGINE, IT STARTED VERY ROUGH. AFTER A MINUTE OF RUNNING, COOLANT STARTED POURING OUT OF THE FRONT OF MY ENGINE. I ASSUME IT WAS FROM THE RADIATOR. THE ENGINE SHUT ITSELF DOWN AGAIN AND I LEFT THE CAR OVERNIGHT. I CAME BACK THE NEXT DAY AND HAD IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. HE TURNED THE KEY AND THE ENGINE WOULDN'T TURN OVER. IT WAS JUST CLICK. HE SAID, "THAT'S NOT GOOD." HE ATTACHED HIS DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT AND A BATTERY JUMPER. SAME RESULT. HE SAID HE DIDN'T EVEN NEED TO LOOK AT MY ENGINE TO KNOW IT WAS BLOWN. THE ERROR MESSAGES ON HIS EQUIPMENT CONFIRMED IT. HE PUT WATER IN MY RADIATOR AND PUT IT UNDER PRESSURE. WATER AGAIN STARTED POURING OUT. HE PULLED OUT THE OIL PAN DRAIN PLUG AND WHAT LOOKED LIKE A VANILLA MILKSHAKE OOZED OUT. HE INSPECTED MY WATER PUMP AND CONFIRMED THAT IT HAD FAILED. IT DRAINED MY RADIATOR AND MY CAR OVERHEATED AND BLEW THE HEAD IN A MATTER OF MINUTES, AGAIN WITH NO INDICATORS OF ANY KIND THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG. I HAVE TO REPLACE MY ENGINE. I STILL OWE MONEY ON IT SO IT'S NOT WORTH IT TO TRASH THE CAR. MY CAR HAS ONLY 70,000 MILES ON IT. UPON DOING RESEARCH I FOUND A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST FORD FOR THIS WATER PUMP PROBLEM PROBLEM. I'M TRYING TO GET IN ON IT. APPARENTLY THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF CASES EXACTLY LIKE MINE AND FORD WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE IT. 2010 EDGE LOSES POWER WITHOUT WARNING. IT JUST WENT OUT. I WAS ABLE TO PARK AND PUT IT BACK ON TRACK. WHEN I AM STOPPED WAITING FOR THE CHANGE OF LIGHT I HAVE TO KEEP THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL SO THAT IT DOES NOT TURN OFF.

THE WATER PUMP IS LOCATED INSIDE THE ENGINE FAILED WITHOUT WARNING, IT CIRCULATED ANTI-FREEZE THROUGH THE ENGINE DISTROYING IT. THIS HAPPENED WITHIN THE SPAN OF 5 MINUTES WITH NO SYMPTOMS, OTHER THAN A LOSS OF ALL ENGINE POWER AT HIWAY SPEED. NO WARNING OR ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON. FRANKLY OTHER THAN THE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS THE ENGINE HAD FAILED. THERE WAS A TERRIBLE NOISE AS I FOUND MY WAY TO A SAFE SPOT TO STOP THE CAR AND IT WAS ONLY DURING THIS TIME THAT THE TEMPRATURE IN THE ENGINE STARTED TO RISE. I BELIEVE THIS IS THE MOST BASIC KIND OF IRRESPONSIBILITY WHERE AS FORD HAS DESIGNED A VEHICLE WITH A KNOW DEFECT AND FAILED TO NOTIFY ITS UNSUSPECTING OWNERS. IT IS ALSO MY BELIEF THAT FORD SHOULD BE RESPOSIBLE FOR PAY 100% OF ANY AND ALL REPAIRS TO MAKE AN OWNER WHOLE. AT THIS POINT I HAVE NO PICTURES, OTHER THAN AN ENGINE THAT LOOKS FULLY INTACT, WITH AN OIL DIPSTICK THAT IS A MILKY DESERT SAND COLOR.

MY EDGE HAS ABOUT 137,000 MILES ON IT AND THE WATER PUMP FAILED WHEN WE WERE ALMOST 200 MILES AWAY FROM HOME. I RECEIVED NO WARNING LIGHTS FOR LOW COOLANT, OR OVERHEATING ENGINE, JUST NOTICED IT ON THE TEMP GUAGE. NORMALLY A WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT IS NOT A BIG DEAL AND CAN BE DONE PRETTY QUICKLY IN A FEW HOURS AND FOR UNDER $500 FOR PARTS AND LABOR, BUT BECAUSE OF THIS PARTICULAR DESIGN IN THESE FORDS THE ENGINE HAS TO BE BASICALLY TAKEN APART AND IT WILL TAKE ABOUT 13 HOURS OF LABOR TO COMPLETE THE JOB. THE PARTS FOR THIS JOB ARE LESS THAN $200 BUT BECAUSE OF THE LABOR AND THE EXTENSIVENESS THIS REPAIR IT IS GOING TO COST ME BETWEEN $1200 - $1800 TO COMPLETE AND THAT IS NOT EVEN AT THE DEALER. NOT ONLY DO I NEED TO HAVE THE WATER PUMP REPLACED BUT BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE IT DUMPS COOLANT INTO THE OIL AND OIL INTO THE COOLANT SYSTEM WHICH MEANS I WILL NEED TO HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AND THE COOLANT SYSTEM FLUSHED AS WELL. ALL OF THESE THINGS START TO ADD UP. I HAVE EVEN READ WHERE THIS FAILURE CAN CAUSE SO MUCH DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE THE ENTIRE THING NEEDS REPLACED. FORD IS AWARE OF THIS DESIGN FLAW BUT HAS DECIDED NOT TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT ON THIS PARTICULAR MODEL AND OTHERS USING THE SAME ENGINE. I DON'T HAVE ANY DOCUMENTATION TO UPLOAD YET AS MY CAR IS STILL AT THE SHOP AND I AM NOT EXPECTING TO GET IT BACK FOR A WEEK. I AM JUST PRAYING THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
