2017 eco boost engine class action lawsuit ,coolant got into the engine

My 2017 Ford Edge has a 2.0 ecoboost engine with a known defect problem. Antifreeze is leaking into the cylinder which could cause it to overheat and a potential fire. It has been checked at two separate FORD dealerships, and they both confirm the same issue. The yellow multi dash lamp has gone on and stayed on since the incident occurred. The first incident was on 4-3-2024.

A check engine light appeared after a couple rough idle starts. I took it in to have the code read and it was a Cylinder 2 misfire. It was explained that it was not a big deal, just needed to replace spark plugs. I replaced spark plugs (car has 65K miles), picked the car back and the problem still existed. Took it back in with the same check engine code of Cylinder 2 misfire, this time the replaced a ignition coil. Picked it up and still had the same issue, and I took it back and they replaced the fuel injector. After the fuel injector was replaced, 2 days later I was driving it home still having the same exact issues of when I originally took it in rough, misfiring start the car over heated. I shut the car off and seen that I had zero coolant. I put coolant in the reservoir ( completely shocked because I had just had an oil change, and they didn't notice the coolant was low). The next morning I called the place I had been taking it and told them what happened and they were stumped. So, I called Ford told them the issues I was having, they said, they are 100% sure they know the issue( because it is a known issue with this year and make of vehicle) of what is wrong with it but to bring it in and they will run a diagnostic on it. With in an hour they said, that I had a coolant leak that was leaking behind the spark plugs and going out the exhaust causing the misfire and white smoke. To replace the motor will be $7K. I bought this car brand new, had the extended warranty and maintenance plan on the vehicle. It was kept in pristine condition and never missed a oil change or any recall. Then 6 months after the warranty is out, this issue began. Ford knows that this is an issue and they have a technical warning on it for the Ford edge and other vehicles. It is a unsafe to drive and not fair that I need to pair 7k for a new engine on a issue they know they have with this engine.

My edge has been experiencing flex plate issues since 106,000 miles. It’s considered a CSP through ford there is a recall but my specific car “isn’t affected” this needs to be recalled so I can get it fixed. If this cracks all the way it could cause a fatal accident and there would be law suits. This is a huge safety concern, and needs to be pushed further as my car has the same type of flex plate as the other edges that have been recalled.

The engine is malfunctioning. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The engine could fail, loss of power, if while passing a vehicle on 2 lane highway a major loss of coolant, overheating due to loss of coolant. Result could be major damage to engine and or fire or both resulting in an accident . The problem has been confirmed by both a Ford dealership and an independent service center. The vehicle engine has been inspected by a Ford dealership in Jacksonville Fl. The engine warning light has come on several times since late 2022 or early 2023. This is when it 1st appeared. 2 dates are significant here: 3/28/23 an engine diagnostic completed due to engine light on, a slight mist detected into cylinder one. 2/19/24 another engine diagnostic completed at Autonation Ford in Jacksonville FL. Confirmed to me by telephone conversation that coolant is leaking into a cylinder. The remedy: a new, remanufactured or used engine has to be installed. All this information is on the 2.0 L Ecoboost engine made by Ford Motor Co. This problem has been known by Ford since maybe as early 2013, not only on this model from 2015-2018 but on the Ford Fusion 2017-2019, Ford Escape, built on or before 16 May-2019. Check engine light came on so I made an appointment and drove the vehicle to Peoria Ford. They said CODE P0302 IN PCM, FOUND TSB FOR CONCERN [XXX], PRESSURE TEST COOLING SYSTEM FOUND COOLANT LEAKING FROM CYLINDER 2, RECOMMEND ADDRESS TSB AND RETEST This could cause a misfire, overheat, or vehicle to catch fire. My 2017 Ford engine had a catastophic failure and required replacement. Sequence of events: January 8 2024, Check Engine light came on and at 99350, the spark plugs were replaced to correct . March 12 2024, Check Engine light came on again at 100900, the coils were replaced to correct. March 19 2024, Catastropic Engine light came while driving on interstate 75, the engine block cracked and was replaced. While replacing the engine it was noted that the Power Take Off Asy-s was also defective and needed replacement. As things progressed it was learned that Ford knew of an engine design failure but did not issue a recall. Fortunately the interste highway engine failure did not cause an accidentbut easily could have. I am currently asking Ford for reimbursement of the enging and Asy-s.

I have a 2017 Ford Edge with a 2.0 Ecoboost motor that was recently diagnosed (by Ford) as needing a new engine due to Coolant Intrusion into cylinder #4. The car has only 57,000 miles and is said to have a known manufacturing defect that causes this. Fortunately I reported this issue to the dealer before it got too severe; however I've been told that the car can catch on fire due to overheating or stop altogether on the freeway because of this issue. From what I've also read Ford has numerous cars equipped with this engine and have thousands of complaints regarding it, though they refuse to do anything to remedy the situation. I therefore would like to report the situation to the NHTSA out of an abundance of caution for myself, family, and other motorists that could be impacted by this.

Engine and combustion chambers cylinder 2 and 3, yes it's available for inspection Sudden overheat and engine failure on road can lead to a serious accidents, also with coolant being leaked in to the combustion chamber could lead to explosions or implosions with the pressure conditions, also there was lot of white, blue smoke outside which was unbreathable Yes, coolant leakage to the combustion chamber is observed by a independent service center No, not at the moment, however this was observed in many 2015-2018 Ford Edge models according to the manufacturer and also said by the independent service center They appeared with the failure but not prior to the failure

So the car has a code p0302 coolant is leaking in cylinder #2 which is causing the car to run rough and overheat because of coolant loss and from what I understand can eventually cause a engine fire I’ve taken it to a shop to find this out but it hasn’t been inspected by the manufacturer police or insurance representatives the check engine light has been intermittently coming on and going back off until one day it just stayed on

bought a 2017 ford edge 3 months later (2.0 engine) my car starts to overheat, white smoke. I Have it taken in to be looked at to get a bill for 8500 if i want it fixed. The car was also not safteyed. Ford has known issues with this just trying to bring awarness so many people having to go without a car for trusting ford and they are not fixing this issue with there 2.0 eco engines

Vehicle engine runs extremely rough and shakes the vehicle after starting the engine. White exhaust smoke is also observed and coolant levels are steadily dropping over time. A pungent unpleasant odor is present near the exhaust as well. Vehicle has been experiencing this issue since June 2022 and has progressively gotten worse. The check engine light was illuminated so a OBD-II code reader was utilized on July 2, 2022. The diagnostic codes P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0316, P1026, and P1285 were found. I have reason to believe that it is related to the issues related to the technical service bulletin (TSB) 22-2229. I am concerned about safety regarding this issue. My immediate concern falls on the poisonous gases produced when the engine is burning coolant putting the driver and others near the vehicle at risk. In addition, the vehicle is unreliable and the issue may cause other parts of the engine to fail. I believe this is a Ford design flaw and they should be held responsible. A certified Ford dealership in Colorado will be running diagnostic tests after it has been dropped off for an appointment scheduled on 7/10/2023 at 8:45am MST.

A check engine light came on in our 2017 Ford Edge 2.0L engine and the engine would shake when turning the car on. After taking it to the dealership, the car had two codes that came up: 0316 and 0302. After inspecting the car further, the diagnosis was that it was a blown head gasket. The car has 34,000 miles, and this issue should not happen this early. After some research, we learned that Ford Edge with our 2.0L engine, years 2016-2018, keep having this engine issue. Our understanding is this is a known issue due to the block design and the head gasket seal not being sized large enough. This problem was reproduced by the dealership and the recommendation is to replace the entire engine with a new 2.0L produced after 2018 when Ford redesigned the engine addressing the problem. The online community is complaining of having to deal with very high repair costs of this issue (needing to replace the whole engine), but Ford has not addressed it with the many owners or issued a recall.

My engine has coolant intrusion, which makes the car more at risk for engine failure or can start on fire and the only way to fix is a whole new engine replacement. This vehicle only has 56,800 miles and ford isn’t willing to replace engine because it’s met its 5 year warranty period but has not meet the 60,000 warranty period. I use this vehicle to travel with my family and just thinking it could start on fire any time do to an engineer flaw is ridiculous. This vehicle poses safety concerns for many families and I hope you guys hold the manufacturer responsible for these issues.

My truck is only 5 years with 54,500 miles and the engine light came on. Code 302 came up. I spent 400 to change the spark plugs and the ignition coil #2. Light went off and came back on. Next the dealership said the Coolant is leaking into the cylinders and I would need a new engine. $10,000. Contact Ford because we can't help you. My warranty just ended 45 days ago. Now What!

We currently have a 2017 Ford Edge with an Ecoboost 2.0 engine at our local Ford dealership. It began running poorly and the check engine light came on. Shortly after, it worsened with a whistling noise and more obvious cylinder misfiring. The codes for the engine light were P0303 and P0316, and was diagnosed with coolant in the cylinder. Per the service department at the dealership, this falls under Technical Service Bulletin 19-2346, with the only repair being complete engine replacement. At the time of this submission, it has been at the dealership for 12 weeks. We currently have no ETA on backordered parts to complete the repair, and will owe $4,300 for the repair when completed (originally over $11,000 quote). I would also like to reference Ford's Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP) #21N12. This CSP offers free repair to many Ecoboost 1.5L engines that have had the identical diagnosis. The associated TSB for this is 22-2134, which aside from different sized engines, is identical to the TSB associated with our vehicle.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Edge. The contact stated while accelerating, exhaust fumes were entering the cabin of the vehicle through the A/C vents. The contact stated that it was difficult to breathe inside the vehicle. The contact stated that the windows would be rolled down for better breathing while in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the truck led gasket and other unknown parts. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 400.

Own a 2017 Ford Edge 2.0L Ecoboost engine with 68,000 miles. Check engine light came on so took it to a local mechanic who replaced the spark plugs, coils, evap sensors, and cam shaft position sensor. The code was stating a misfire in the #2 cylinder. Less than a week later the light came back on and got an engine overheating warning. Added coolant and then had to add more coolant a few days later with no evidence of a coolant leak. When starting the vehicle or accelerate from a stop would notice a liquid swooshing sound. Also when starting the vehicle it would tremble and run ruff for a minute or two. There would be a lot of white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe with a bad oder that would eventually dissipate after diving a few miles. Finally drove the car to work and when I went to leave afterwards the vehicle would not start. Would crank but would never turn over. Had the car towed to a Ford dealer that diagnosed coolant leaking into the number 2 cylinder. They told me the only fix was to replace the engine. They gave me Fords number and told me to call and complain since I only had 68,000 miles on it. They gave me a copy of Fords response which states, “As a subsequent with no recent new vehicle or paid repair history, the customer generates a 0% share recommendation, meaning they do not meet the CLV requirements for the FLP assistance. Ford Motor Company is unable provide financial assistance in this case”. Called Ford and was told that there was nothing they could do since I was 8,000 miles over warranty and refused to offer any discounts or assistance. Asked to speak to the warranty department that made the decision not to cover and was informed there was no extension for that department so I can not speak to anyone that made the decision not to cover any of the costs. Was quoted from the dealer the cost for the repairs will be $7,710.81 plus taxes. This is a major safety issue as the defect can cause the engine to overheat and start on fire.

head gasket engineering defect - failed. - coolant leaking in cylinder - engine cracked - only 67,000 miles - was under warranty on years but over on mileage by 7,000 - refused to assist with cost of replacing engine - out of pocket cost close to 11,000 - 2,000 (recouped 1500) was for diagnosis from local garage and 9,000 for engine at Ford Dealership. No assistance with rental car, as well. Replacing engine lead time is 3 months! This is the only vehicle in household. Ford is aware of the engineering defect - has recently revised engineering to correct - a recall should be performed on cars from 2016 thru 2018 with Ford. The consumer should NOT be responsible for an engineering defect. These problems can surface as quick as 20,000 miles. Again! Coolant leak in cylinder destroyed the engine. Where are the Technical Service Bulletins on these vehicles!!? Prestine maintenance records follow this car - no fault of consumer - this is 100 percent Ford's fault. These need to be recalled immediately before a fatal accident occurs.

I believe the component that is causing the intermittent issue is the throttle body, however the issue is very hard to diagnose as it is very intermittent. There has been another case on the same engine (just a different year) that I have found online. While entering a highway on multiple occasions now, the vehicles engine entered a limp mode, and the entire dash had lit up with service messages. The Wrench, Check Engine, Service AdvanceTrac, Blindspot Monitoring, and many more lights were present. This is unsafe because in both situations I was unable to accelerate to get out of the way of oncoming traffic let alone safely pull my car to the side of the road. In one instance I had to pull off on the only shoulder I had just as I was entering a major highway and ended up being half in the lane of oncoming traffic on a bend where oncoming vehicles could not really see me stopped. Ive been at a dealer twice, and there are no codes present, the issue goes away after a simple vehicle restart.

A warning lamp for the power train came on while traveling on the highway (Wrench indicator). We stopped to check the owners manual for the meaning of the wrench indicator. After seeing it was for the power train, we started back up and headed towards Edgefield (where we live) and get to the closest Ford dealer. After starting the vehicle back up, the warning lamp was no longer lit. While accelerating to highway speeds entering the highway, the engine flex plate gave out and all power from the engine was lost. The vehicle still kept power to the electrical systems (Power steering, A/C, lights, etc.) but no power was being pushed to the wheels. Had the incident happened at full highway speeds, it is unknown what damage could have occurred. This is the assumption from myself due to the symptoms provided from the vehicle at the halt. Symptoms include: Grinding/Rattling sound from the rear of the engine, sounds more prevalent at idle and when shifting into gear, loss of power to wheels, and no other systems have issue after incident. Vehicle is currently at Herlong Ford (SC Ford Dealer) awaiting diagnostic and possible maintenance after the incident. I would assume the vehicle would be available for inspection upon request. After conducting research, we are now aware of a known recall on this specific vehicle for its age and time of manufacturing. The owned vehicle falls into the criteria for the recall but it is unknown why it is not noted on the vehicle history/Ford recall center. The vehicle was manufactured at the Oakville plant, falls within the recall years 2013-2018, and has shown all symptoms pertaining to the recall that is open on other vehicles.

Research indicates this is a common problem with this and other Ford vehicles, with Class Action Law Suits in several states. However, it is not covered under a recall at this time.

AT ROUGHLY 77,500 MILES OUR ENGINE STARTING MISFIRING BOTH WHILE STATIONARY AND IN MOTION. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WE PULLED CODE P0305, INDICATING CYLINDER #2 MISFIRE. WE REPLACED THE COILS AND SPARK PLUGS AND THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO MISFIRE. WE THEN BEGAN HEARING FLUID MOVING BEHIND OUR DASH BOARD AND NOTICED THAT THE COOLANT TANK WAS LOW BUT NO VISIBLE COOLANT LEAK WAS FOUND. WE TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER'S SERVICE CENTER (WOODHOUSE FORD - OMAHA, NE) FOR INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSIS. THEY CONFIRMED THAT ENGINE COOLANT WAS LEAKING INTO CYLINDER #2, CAUSING THE MISFIRE. IT WAS ALSO LEAKING INTO THE HEATING ELEMENT, CAUSING A PUTRID SMELL IN THE CAB OF THE VEHICLE AND THE RUSHING FLUID SOUND BEHIND THE DASHBOARD. THEY CONFIRMED THIS IS RELATED TO FORD TSB 19-2346. FORD STATED THAT THE REPAIR REQUIRES A $6300 REPLACEMENT ENGINE AND THEY ARE NOT LIABLE FOR THE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE AS A RESULT OF THEIR DEFECT. PER THE TSB, THIS ENGINE DEFECT MAY RESULT IN ENGINE FIRES BUT FORTUNATELY IT DID NOT GET TO THIS POINT FOR US.
