TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT, AN ABNORMAL CLICKING NOISE WAS HEARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FREEWAY MOTORS OF ROGERS (14080 MAIN ST, ROGERS, MN 55374, (763) 428-8488) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL GEAR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
THIS MAY BE A DUPLICATE COMPLAINT BECAUSE I'M NOT SURE I SUBMITTED MY PREVIOUS COMPLAINT FORM PROPERLY. YESTERDAY I WAS TRAVELLING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT 65 TO 70 MPH WHEN MY STEERING FROZE UP. THANK GOD I WAS IN THE RIGHT LANE AND GOING STRAIGHT BECAUSE IF I HAD BEEN IN THE PROCESS OF TURNING AND THERE WERE OTHER VEH. AT AN INTERSECTION THERE WOULD HAVE ALMOST CERTAINLY BEEN AN ACCIDENT. ALSO THANK GOD MY WIFE WAS'NT DRIVING BECAUSE SHE WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO STEER THE CAR OFF THE FREEWAY. I WAS ABLE TO WRANGLE THE CAR TO A NEARBY FORD DEALERSHIP BUT AFTER TURNING THE ENGINE OFF AND BACK ON THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY. AS I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM WITH FORD EXPLORERS FURTHER I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A REOCCURING PROBLEM AND HAS BEEN REPORTED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. IN MY WILDEST IMAGINATION I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT SOMETHING HAS NOT BEEN DONE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM WILL ABSOLUTELY RESULT IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY TO SOMEONE SOON. I HOPE IT'S NOT ME OR MY FAMILY.
I WAS IN DOWNTOWN DES MOINES AND RECEIVED A "SERVICE STEERING FAULT NOW" WARNING. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE TO FIND A PARKING SPOT. WHILE PARALLEL PARKING, I RECIEVED THE WARNING AGAIN BUT THIS TIME THE STEERING WENT OUT. I WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AT ALL. I WAS ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS AS A TRAIN WAS COMING AT THIS POINT. I CONTINUED TO TRY TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL ANYWAY I COULD TO AT LEAST GET OFF THE TRACKS. O FINALLY TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL AND GET OFF THE TRAIN TRACKS. WE THEN TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY HAD IT FOR 3 DAYS. ALL THEY DID WAS RESET THE COMPUTER SYSTEM TELLING ME IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. WE THEN CONTACTED FORD XORP. AND THEY ALSO DID NOTHING BECAUSE THEY DIDNT SEE IT AS AN ISSUE. IF A COMPANY DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE BUYING THEIR PRODUCTS, HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO FEEL SAFE IN THEIR VEHICLES?
STEERING FAILED WHILE DRIVING IN MOTION RESULTING IN A CLOSE CALL WHEN CROSSING INTERSECTION HAVING ONCOMING TRAFFIC TO INTERSTATE RAMP, EVIDENTLY A MAJOR SAFETY RISK, DUE TO ELECTRONIC STEERING RACK DESIGN ISSUE. ESTIMATE OF OVER $2,253.00 REPAIR WITH $1,343.00 PART AT LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP.---THANKS,
THIS WAS THE 3RD TIME IT HAD HAPPENED. ON 5/11/2018 THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP IN THE PARKING LOT AND NOT ON THE HIGHWAY LIKE BEFORE. WE HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALERSHIP VERIFIED THAT IT WAS LOCKED UP AND THE CODES WERE STILL DISPLAYING ON THE DASH. AFTER INVESTIGATING THE CODES THE DEALER STATED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WELL WHEN THE STEERING COLUMN WAS REPLACED WE WENT TO PICK IT UP. IT WAS REPORTED BY THE DEALER THAT A SENSOR HAD SHORTED OUT ON THE COLUMN CAUSING THE ISSUE. SO MY WIFE AND I DID NOT!!! FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AFTER THIS KNOWING THAT IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. NOT A GOOD FEELING.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING LOW SPEEDS, THE STEERING WHEEL MADE A GRINDING NOISE AND BECAME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE JERKED WHEN ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE LANES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (JACK BOWKER FORD LINCOLN, 2415 N 14TH ST, PONCA CITY, OK 74601) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,000. *TT
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH AND THE CAR BEEPED A WARNING STATING STEERING MALFUNCTION AND MY WHEEL JUST LOCKED. I WAS IN MY CAR WITH MY WIFE AND TWO KIDS. I IMMEDIATELY PUT ON MY BLINKERS AND STARTED HONKING, LUCKILY EVERYONE AROUND ME REALIZED MY CAR WAS IN TROUBLE AND SAFELY MADE IT OFF THE HIGHWAY. SOMETHING LIKE THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WHEN YOU CANNOT CONTROL A CAR AT 60 MPH
I JUST FILED A COMPLAINT ON MY VEHICLE STEERING PROBLEM AND AS I HAVE BEEN SURFING THE WEB I FIND THAT MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM A RETIRED UTAH HIGHWAY PATROLMAN WITH 36 YEARS EXPERIENCE AND I HAVE NEVER SEEN A MORE DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAN THIS. I CANNOT BELIEVE TJHAT SOMETHING HAS NOT BEEN DONE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I CAN GUARANTEE IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL SOMEONE IS KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED AS A RESULT OF THIS PROBLEM.
THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP WHILE GOING 55 MILES AN HOUR OVER A BRIDGE GOING STRAIGHT
THE "ELECTRONIC STEERING GEAR" IS DEFECTIVE AT 80,000 MILES. THE PART MAKES LOUD NOISES ON TURNS. REPAIR SHOP SAYS INORDINATE NUMBER OF PROBLEMS HAVE COME IN WITH THIS PART & FAILURE COULD CAUSE STEERING TO FREEZE UP & CAUSE SERIOUS WRECK. SHOP SAYS CAN'T BE REPAIRED & MUST BE REPLACED. PART & LABOR COSTS OVER $2K. THIS CRITICAL, EXPENSIVE PART SHOULD NOT FAIL AT SUCH LOW MILEAGE & CAUSE SUCH HIGH RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH.
AT INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SPEED 80MPH MY POWER STEERING WAS LOST. I HAD TWO WARNINGS POP UP AS IT WENT OUT; STEERING LOSS STOP SAFELY AND SERVICE ADVANCE TRACK. THERE WAS NOT ANY WARNING AT ALL. THIS WAS NOT A TYPICAL POWER STEERING LOSS I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS WITH OLDER VEHICLES I HAVE HAD. I HAD TO PUT NEARLY MY FULL BODY WEIGHT OF 300 LBS INTO STEERING TO A SAFE PLACE. HAD THIS HAPPENED TO OTHERS THIS VERY WELL COULD HAVE BEEN A HIGH SPEED IMPACT INTO A WALL WITH THIS LOSS. I AM HAVING THIS VEHICLE TOWED TO A DEALER AFTER ATTEMPTING TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTING IT TO SEE IF A RESET MAY BE NEEDED AS SOME CODES RESET THIS WAY.
SINCE AROUND 40000 MILES, POWER STEERING WILL HAVE A LOUD CLICK AND POP WITH ALL TURNS. SINCE 50000 MILES, DURING THE TURN, THE POWER STEERING WILL LOCK AND THE DRIVER WILL HAVE TO PULL HARD TO CHANGE TURN RADIUS. TOOK IT TO FORD - ENTIRE EPAS (ELECTRONIC POWER ASSISTED STEERING) NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS UNSAFE AND UNACCEPTABLE AT 50000 MILES.
I WAS DRIVING AND WHILE TURNING I LOST STEERING ASSIST CONTROLS. NO POWER STEERING AT ALL. I ALL MOST CRASHED IN MID TURN.
ALL STEERING STOPPED WHILE GOING 45/50 MPH ON A MAIN ROAD! GOT THE STEERING SENSOR FIXED FOR $551 AND 2 DAYS LATER THE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN SO IT'S GOING BACK IN..... I'M PREGNANT WITH 2 BOYS U DER 2 AND A 7 YR OLD AND THIS OS RIDICULOUS!!!
WHILE TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT A KNOCKING SOUND CAN BE HEARD. TOOK VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HAVING A BAD STEERING GEAR AND IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED FOR $1600 PLUS TAX. THE VEHICLE HAS 35,766 MILES ON IT AND IS OVER THE 3 YEAR WARRANTY BY 5 MONTHS. FORD WOULD NOT GIVE ASSISTANCE ON REPLACING THE PART. SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THESE FAULTY STEERING COMPONENTS BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED. POWER STEERING GEARS SHOULD NOT GO OUT WITH THAT FEW MILES. SEEING BY THE COMPLAINTS ON THIS PAGE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE.
ELECTRONIC STEERING ASSIST CONTROL FREEZES UP WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. THIS COULD RESULT IN AN INCREASED RISK OF A CRASH. THE VEHICLE MUST BE PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE MUST BE TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES. WHEN RESTARTED, THE PROBLEM CEASES. SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE MUST BE TURNED OFF FOR LONGER PERIODS THAN 10 MINUTES TO "RESET" THE PROBLEM. THIS ERROR HAS OCCURRED FIVE TIMES SINCE JANUARY OF 2016.
WITH 51,000 MILES AND JUST OVER 3 YEARS ON THE CAR, THE STEERING GEAR BOX FAILED WITH POPPING NOISE OCCURRING ANYTIME THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED. GOT WORSE QUICKLY AND HAD TO GET IT FIXED. VERY EXPENSIVE BUT ALSO VERY SCARY FOR MY SAFETY. I ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF MY CARS AND KEEP THEM FOR 7-10 YEARS.
AT APPROXIMATELY 57,000 MILES, MY COMPLETE STEERING MECHANISM FAILED AS I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE DOWN A ROAD, WHILE OUT OF STATE ON A VACATION. BOTH OF MY CHILDREN WERE IN THE VEHICLE WHEN THIS OCCURRED AND LUCKILY NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THE COMPLETE RACK AND PINION SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED ($1,900.00). WHILE WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK, I LOCATED A FORD RECALL HAD BEEN COMPLETED FOR THE PREVIOUS THREE OR FOUR MODEL YEARS (2011-2014) FOR THE EXACT SAME FAILURE. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY MY MODEL YEAR (2015) ISN'T INCLUDED. WE WERE ON A VACATION AND TRAVELED DOWN THE INTERSTATE AND GLAD THIS DIDN'T OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING 75 MPH.
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AT 30MPH WHEN POWER STEERING FAILED TOOK IT TO SHOP AND THEY SAID IT WAS ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING MODULE THAT FAILED. A 3 YEAR OLD VEHICLE WITH 40000 MILES ON IT .LOOKS LIKE ALOT MORE PEOPLE HAVE HAD SAME PROBLEM.

THE DEALER (CASA FORD, 5815 MONTANA AVE, EL PASO, TX 79925, (915) 779-2272) WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE AND DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THEY WOULD TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND ASKED THE CONTACT TO LEAVE THE VEHICLE WITH THEM FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS WAITING ON A RESPONSE TO DETERMINE IF THE MANUFACTURER COULD PROVIDE A REMEDY. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE NOT AVAILABLE.
MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. I COULDN'T TURN THE WHEEL AT ALL. MECHANIC SAYS THE STEERING MODULE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.
THE POWER STEERING FAILS WHILE DRIVING. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 7-8 TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR. THE WORST TIME WAS WHEN IT FAILED IN A SLOW, TIGHT TURN. WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILED THE STEERING SELF ALIGNED BACK TO STRAIGHT. THIS HAPPENED IN MY KID'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARKING LOT. IT EASILY COULD HAVE LED TO A BAD ACCIDENT OR HITTING A PEDESTRIAN BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WENT IN AN UNINTENDED DIRECTION. THE ATTACHED PICTURE IS FROM ONE OF THE OTHER 7-8 TIMES THIS OCCURRED, THUS THE MISMATCH IN MILEAGE FROM THE PICTURE AND THAT LISTED IN THE COMPLAINT.
VEHICLE ONLY HAS 41000 MILES AND THE RACK AND PINION IS MAKING A CRACKING NOISE WHEN TURNING TO THE RIGHT. VEHICLE HAS NOT FAIL AS GETTING THE STEERING LOCK BUT NEEDS TO BE REPLACE TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT.
WHILE DRIVING AT 65 MILES AN HOUR ON A BUSY HIGHWAY THE STEERING WHEEL ON MY 2015 FORD EXPLORER EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE FAILURE. THE POWER STEERING ASSIST WARNING ILLUMINATED AND MY VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO SAFELY MOVE FROM ONE LANE TO THE NEXT. I WAS APPROACHING A CURVE IN THE ROAD AND I APPLIED MY BRAKES AND TURNED ON MY HAZARDS TO AVOID WRECKING INTO THE HIGHWAY BARRIER. I WAS NEARLY STRUCK BY A LARGE SEMI-TRACTOR TRAILER AND A FEW OTHER VEHICLES AS I ATTEMPTED TO GET TO SAFETY. I THOUGHT FOR SURE I WAS GOING TO BE STRUCK BY PASSING VEHICLES. ONCE I WAS ABLE TO GET TO SAFETY, THE MESSAGES READ "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" AND THEN I SAW ANOTHER MESSAGE THAT READ A TERRAIN MANAGEMENT FUNCTION FAULT AS WELL. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MY WIFE TO TELL HER I WAS STUCK ON THE SIDE OF RT 280 IN WEST ORANGE, NJ. JUST IN CASE SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ME. I THE CALLED AAA TO REQUEST A TOW. I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND THE TERRAIN MANAGEMENT FAULT WAS STILL ILLUMINATED. I ATTEMPTED TO MOVE MY VEHICLE TO A SAFER PLACE AND KEPT HEARING A WHINING NOISE AND THE STEERING WOULD GO IN AND OUT OF FAULTS. ONCE I WAS IN A SAFE PLACE I ADVISED AAA OF MY LOCATION AND AWAITED THEIR SERVICE. I WAS SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNKNOWN ISSUE TO FORD BY THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER. WE HAD THE EXPLORER TOWED TO BEYER FORD IN MORRISTOWN, NJ. I RECEIVED A CALL TODAY FROM THE FORD DEALER THAT THE POWER STEERING RACK HAS TO BE REPLACED. I LOOKED THIS ISSUE UP ON-LINE AND FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE AND NOT JUST ON EXPLORERS, BUT OTHER FORD VEHICLES AND DIFFERENT YEARS. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE IT LITERALLY CAME OUT OF NOWHERE WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT 65 MPH. THAT POSSIBILITY THAT I COULD HAVE HAD MY FAMILY INCLUDING MY 6 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER IN THE VEHICLE AND GIVING DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES, IT COULD HAVE BEEN A CATASTROPHIC EVENT. WE ALSO OWN A 2011 FORD EXPLORER.
DRIVING ON SMALL HIGHWAY 55-60 MPH. DASH WARNINGS DING AND FLASH POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILURE, TERRAIN MANGEMENT SYSTEM FAULT, SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC. VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOSES POWER STEERING AND FOUND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO MAKE TURN INTO PARKING LOT. RESTARTED CAR HOPING IT WAS A GLITCH...I WAS LOW ON WIPER FLUID AND PRESSED OK. (SEEMED TO HAPPEN IMMEDIATELY AFTER PRESSING BUTTON ON STEERING WHEEL). ALL WAS NORMAL AND DROVE HOME. THIS CONTINUED TO HAPPEN AFTER SEVERAL DAYS AND WOULD CORRECT ITSELF UPON RESTARTING CAR. I WAS LUCKY TO BE DRIVING IN LIGHT TRAFFIC. I HAVE MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED. AFTER READING MANY COMPLAINTS, I AM SUSPECTING THE STEERING RACK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.
