WHEN WE TOOK DELIVERY OF OUR 2006 HONDA ODYSSEY ON JANUARY 21, 2014 THE RIGHT HAND DOOR WAS NOT OPENING/CLOSING PROPERLY. THE SALES PERSONNEL SAID THAT IT COULD POSSIBLY BE WEATHER RELATED AND TO GIVE IT SOME TIME AND THAT IF IT CONTINUED TO NOT WORK PROPERLY THEN TO BRING THE VAN BACK AND THEY WOULD FIX IT. WE HAD JUST UNDERGONE AN ICE STORM HERE IN MICHIGAN, IN DECEMBER 2013, AND HAD UNUSUALLY COLD TEMPERATURES WHICH STAYED UNTIL EARLY MARCH. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AFTER THE WEATHER HAD WARMED A BIT AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE DOOR AND THEY SAID THAT THE VAN WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BUT THAT THEY WOULD WORK ON IT AS A GOOD FAITH GESTURE. THE VAN WAS TAKEN IN AND THE CENTER ROLLER ASSEMBLY OF THE RIGHT SIDE SLIDING DOOR WAS REPLACED. THE DOOR WORKED PROPERLY FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND THEN STARTED TO NOT WORK PROPERLY. THE SYMPTOMS THE DOOR WAS EXHIBITING WERE THAT OF A FAILED RELEASE ACTUATOR. I HAVE FOUND THROUGH RESEARCH THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS WITH THE 3RD GENERATION HONDA ODYSSEY VANS AND WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALER REGARDING THIS ISSUE THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO UNLESS I WAS WILLING TO PAY FOR IT. THEY HAD EVEN NOTED IT IN THE VAN'S SERVICE RECORD THAT THE RELEASE ACTUATOR MIGHT HAVE TO BE REPLACED BUT ELECTED NOT TO DO IT AT THE TIME THEY REPLACED THE CENTER ROLLER BECAUSE THE VAN'S DOOR TESTED OK. *JS

WHEN I WAS ON VACATION WITH MY FAMILY, THE DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER DOOR WOULD NOT CLOSE. IT WOULD CLOSE PARTLY, BEGIN BEEPING AND REOPEN. WE HAD TO KEEP PRESSING THE CONTROL TO CLOSE THE DOOR UNTIL IT FINALLY CLOSED. TWO DAYS BEFORE THAT, THE LIFTGATE STRUTS FAILED. THAT IS DISTURBING WHEN I THINK ABOUT HOW MY DAUGHTER WAS HELPING ME GET ITEMS OUT OF THE BACK. WE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. THIRDLY, THE PAINT IS STRIPPING OFF ON PARTS OF THE BODY. CONSIDERING THE REPUTATION THAT HONDA IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE, IT IS UPSETTING TO HAVE THIS MANY PROBLEMS WITH AN 8 YEAR OLD VEHICLE! NOW WE MUST DECIDE IF IT'S WORTH FIXING AND KEEPING OR TRADE IT IN FOR A TOYOTA. IN LOOKING AT THE OTHER COMPLAINTS, IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BUT ARE NOT BEING ADDRESSED. THE STRUTS ON THE LIFTGATE OF MY 2006 HONDA ODYSSEY LX COMPLETELY FAILED IN NOVEMBER 2011 AT AROUND 40,000 MILES. THANKFULLY, THIS HAPPENED AS I WAS OPENING IT, SO NO ONE WAS UNDERNEATH IT YET. THE LIFTGATE IS EXTREMELY HEAVY AND COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURY, ESPECIALLY TO A SMALL PERSON. WE REPLACED THE STRUTS WITH NEW HONDA PARTS PURCHASED FROM THE SAME HONDA DEALERSHIP WHERE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. IT IS NOW APRIL 2013, NOT EVEN A YEAR AND HALF LATER, AND THE REPLACEMENT STRUTS HAVE ALSO FAILED. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY HAVE NO ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO FROM HERE OTHER THAN REPLACE THE STRUTS WITH THE SAME PART THAT HAS FAILED TWICE NOW. I'VE SEEN NUMEROUS REPORTS ONLINE ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE SAME VEHICLE. GIVEN THE TRACK RECORD OF THE LIFTGATE STRUTS FOR THIS MODEL, I THINK IT'S PRETTY LIKELY THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN, AND I FEAR THAT I OR SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY MAY SUFFER SERIOUS INJURY OR WORSE. OTHER MODEL YEARS HAVE BEEN RECALLED BECAUSE APPARENTLY THE PRESSURIZED GAS LEAKS FROM THE STRUTS. I THINK THE 2006 HAS THE SAME PROBLEM, AND A RECALL IS IN ORDER. THESE STRUTS NEED TO BE REPLACED WITH ONES THAT DON'T LEAK. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

PASSENGER DOOR SLIDER JAMS AND STICKS WHEN USING KEYLESS ENTRY. FIRST REPAIR 2009 @ 39000 MILES. ROLLERS REPLACED. THIS CAUSED PROBLEM TO WORSEN. MODESTO MISTLIN HONDA HAS NOT BEEN HELPFUL WITH THE ISSUE. *TR TOOK IT IN AGAIN DEC.21, 2009 AND SO ON... BEING THIS IS ONLY VEHICLE I HAD TO PUT UP WITH ISSUE. REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE REPEATEDLY WHICH HAS CAUSED PROBLEM TO BECOME WORSE. 2013 DOOR WILL NOT OPEN. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD! HAVE IT IN SHOP NOW IN FREMONT HONDA.

TRYING TO CLOSE THE REAR PASSENGER-SIDE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR, IT WOULD CLOSE HALF-WAY, START BEEPING AND OPEN UP AGAIN. IT WOULD DO THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN, UNTIL IT FINALLY CLOSED SEVERAL TRIES LATER. TURNING THE AUTOMATIC FUNCTION OFF WOULD NOT HELP. WHEN PUTTING IT ON MANUAL FUNCTION, THE DOOR WOULD JAM AND LITERALLY NOT BUDGE. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT JUST STOPPED WORKING ALTOGETHER. THE LAST TIME WE ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE DOOR, IT ENDED UP REMAINING OPEN FOR THE ENTIRE DAY BECAUSE IT WAS LITERALLY JAMMED IN THE OPEN POSITION. THANKFULLY IT WAS IN OUR DRIVEWAY! WE HAVEN'T OPENED IT SINCE. MOVING FORWARD TO LAST MONTH, NOVEMBER 2012. THE DRIVER'S SIDE AUTOMATIC DOOR STARTED SQUEAKING UPON OPENING AND CLOSING. A WEEK LATER, IT TOO WAS REFUSING TO SHUT. THIS TIME I WAS AT A GROCERY STORE AND ENDED UP STRANDED IN THE PARKING LOT WITH MY 6 YEAR OLD FOR OVER AN HOUR BEFORE I COULD FINALLY GET THE DOOR TO SHUT. IT IS WINTER AND THUS, VERY COLD THESE DAYS. I AM NOW HAVING TO LOAD MY KIDS IN THE VAN FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR OR THROUGH THE TRUNK. I DON'T DARE OPEN EITHER AUTOMATIC DOOR. UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE SEEN THIS EXACT SCENARIO WITH TOO MANY OTHER HONDA ODYSSEY OWNERS. THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL OF BEING A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, DEPENDING ON WHERE PEOPLE ARE WHEN THE DOORS REFUSE TO CLOSE. NOT TO MENTION THE POTENTIAL INSURANCE LIABILITY IF THE DOORS REFUSE TO CLOSE AND ONE IS LEFT WITH NO CHOICE BUT TO LEAVE THEIR VEHICLE WIDE OPEN FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME. *TR

THE DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR WOULD NOT LATCH. WE WERE TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP TO TURN IT ON MANUAL SO WE COULD DRIVE IT WITH OUT HEARING THE DOOR ALARM. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE SAFE TO DRIVE WHILE ONE MANUAL. WHILE DRIVING YOU COULD HEAR THE DOOR TRYING TO LATCH AUTO EVEN WHEN IT WAS SET TO MANUAL. WHEN I WAS TURNING A CORNER THE DRIVERSIDE PASSENGER DOOR POPPED OPEN AND SLID ALL THE WAY OPEN. WE HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE OTHER SLIDING DOOR LAST YEAR AND THE DEALERSHIP ENDED UP REPLACING THE LATCH ON THAT DOOR BUT THE DOOR NEVER OPENED ALL THE WAY. I WOULD HAVE THOUGH THERE WOULD BE A SAFETY MECHANISM IN PLACE ON THOSE DOORS TO PREVENT IT FROM OPENING WHILE DRIVING BUT I WAS WRONG. *TR

PASSENGER SIDE SLIDING DOOR FAILED TO DISENGAGE THE LOCK. HAD TO TAKE TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY REMOVED THE DOOR PANEL AND REPLACED THE LATCH. SINCE THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN THEY HAD TO DO THIS FROM THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. ON 9/1/2012 THE DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR ALSO FAILED TO DISENGAGE THE LOCK. I HAVE NOT HAD THIS REPAIRED YET. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT. LUCKILY BOTH TIMES WE WERE PARKED, BUT IF IT HAD BEEN AN EMERGENCY VALUABLE TIME WOULD HAVE BEEN WASTED IN TRYING TO GET A NON-FUNCTIONING DOOR TO OPEN. *TR

THE POWER LIFT GATE FELL DOWN ON ME; LUCKILY NO ONE WAS DIRECTLY UNDER IT WHEN IT FELL. IT HAPPENED INSTANTLY; WHEN I OPENED IT UP, IT CRASHED DOWN THE FIRST TIME. UPON FURTHER ATTEMPTS TO OPEN IT, IT WOULD SLOWLY OPEN AND THEN JERK AND THEN GO BACK DOWN. IT WILL NOT STAY OPEN BY ITSELF. THE LOCAL HONDA SERVICE CENTER INSPECTED IT AND SAID THE STRUTS HAD GONE OUT ON IT AND REPLACED THEM BOTH. ACCORDING TO NEWS FEB 21, 2012, HONDA ODYSSEYS ARE BEING RECALLED FOR THE SAME ISSUE IN MARCH 2012; MY 2006 MODEL HAS DONE THE SAME THING THE NEWS ARTICLES REPORT. *TR

IN THE SUMMER OF 2009, MY 2006 HONDA ODYSSEY DEVELOPED A STRONG, FOUL ODOR FOR WHICH NO SOURCE COULD BE FOUND. I VACUUMED THE CARPET, LEFT CONTAINERS OF BAKING SODA INSIDE, AND EVEN THREW AWAY THE RUBBER FLOOR MATS, THINKING THEY HAD DETERIORATED IN THE SUMMER HEAT. THE ODOR DID NOT GO AWAY. (THE CAR HAD BEEN GARAGE-KEPT UNTIL AROUND THAT TIME.) IN 2010, WHEN TAKING THE CAR FOR A ROUTINE SERVICE APPOINTMENT, I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER TO CHECK FOR THE PROBLEM. HE WANTED TO REPLACE THE CABIN AIR FILTER, WHICH I HAD ALREADY DONE MYSELF. IN SEPTEMBER, 2011, AFTER HURRICANE IRENE, THE TAILGATE HATCH WOULD SLOSH AND SPILL WATER WHEN OPENED. THIS PAST WEEK, I WENT TO DRIVE THE CAR ON AN EXTENDED TRIP. WHEN I WENT TO LIFT THE REAR SEATS, WHICH HAD BEEN FOLDED INTO THE CARGO AREA, TO THE UPRIGHT POSITION, I DISCOVERED THAT THE SEATS WERE COVERED IN MOLD AND RUST AND WERE DRIPPING WITH WATER. THE CARGO AREA CARPETING WAS SATURATED. UPON RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, I LEARNED THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE AT LEAST NOVEMBER, 2010. BESIDES THE HEATH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH EXPOSURE TO INHALING MOLD, THE RUST MAY HAVE COMPROMISED THE INTEGRITY OF THE HARDWARE SECURING THE SEATS TO THE FLOOR, TO SAY NOTHING OF THE COSMETIC DAMAGE TO THE LEATHER OF THE SEATS. *TR

MY 2006 HONDA ODYSSEY (WITH 45000 MILES) REAR LIFT GATE SUPPORTING STRUT(S) FAILED AND THE THE GATE BECAME SO HEAVY. LUCKILY THE FAILURE HAPPENED WHEN THE GATE WAS CLOSED. IF THE FAILURE OCCURS WHEN THE GATE IS OPEN, SOMEONE MAY BE INJURED. HOWEVER, I DID BUMP MY HEAD WHEN I PUT A POST TO HOLD THE GATE WHILE REMOVING ITEMS FROM THE VEHICLE. I BROUGHT MY 2006 HONDA ODYSSEY INTO THE DEALER FOR A BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RECALL. UNBEKNOWNST TO ME I WAS INFORMED THAT 2 MOTOR MOUNTS ALSO NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $1350. THE SERVICE MANAGER EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THE ODYSSEY AND NOT PART OF REGULAR MAINTENANCE. AN ONLINE SEARCH REVEALS THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS OF THIS VAN ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME SITUATION. I THOUGHT HONDA WAS KNOWN FOR SAFETY BUT IT APPEARS IT HAS ALSO EARNED THE REPUTATION FOR DEFECTIVE MOTOR MOUNTS. AT WHAT POINT WILL HONDA BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR AN OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW THAT JEOPARDIZES THE SAFETY OF ITS RIDERS? MY VAN HAS LESS THAN 60,000 MILES AND IS JUST OVER THE 5 YEAR MARK, SO IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. AS LONG AS HONDA IS ALLOWED TO DEFER THE COST OF THIS REPAIR TO ITS OWNERS IT WILL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LIFTGATE STRUCK AND INJURED A PASSENGER IN THEIR BACK. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS AND OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HYDRAULIC LIFTGATE HINGES FAILED. THE LIFT GATE CAME DOWN UNEXPECTANTLY WHILE IT WAS OPEN. NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE DEALER WAS CALLED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE AND ANY REPAIRS WOULD BE AT THE CONTACTS EXPENSE. THE POWER LIFT GATE ON 2006 ODYSSEY FAILED HITTING MY HUSBAND ON THE SHOULDER. WE HAD NO PRIOR WARNING OF THIS HAPPENING AND IT COULD HAVE EASILY RESULTED IN A MORE SERIOUS INJURY HAD THE GATE CLOSED ON ONE OF MY CHILDREN. HONDA CURRENTLY HAS A RECALL ON 2005 VEHICLE FOR THIS ISSUE BUT WHEN I CALLED THEM THEY SAID THEY WOULD MAKE A NOTE BUT AT THIS TIME DID NOT HAVE ANY INFORMATION AS TO A RECALL OF THE 2006. MY LOCAL DEALERSHIPS ACKNOWLEDGED A PROBLEM WITH THE DETERIORATION OF THE GAS STRUTS IN THE ODYSSEY. THIS CLEARLY A DANGEROUS DEFECT AND NEEDS TO BE RECTIFIED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED. *TR

FAILURE OF THE LIFT GATE GAS STRUTS ON A 2006 HONDA ODYSSEY TOURING THAT CAUSES THE GATE TO CLOSE UNEXPECTEDLY. CONSEQUENCES WERE AN ADULT MALE BEING HIT IN THE BACK BY THE LIFT GATE. IN THIS INSTANCE NO SERIOUS INJURY HAD OCCURRED, BUT IF THE PERSON IN THE PATH OF THE LIFT GATE WERE SMALLER THE WEIGHT AND MOMENTUM OF THE GATE COULD EASILY CAUSE HEAD AND NECK INJURIES. I WOULD ASSUME MOST OWNERS OF THIS MINIVAN HAVE CHILDREN AND THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT A CHILD IN THE PATH OF A FAILING LIFT GATE WOULD SUSTAIN SERIOUS INJURY. THE LIFT GATE GAS STRUTS NEED TO BE REPLACED. HONDA IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND HAS OFFERED A RECALL FOR THIS ON SIMILAR VEHICLES, BUT HAS NOT YET OFFERED ANY CORRECTION FOR THE VEHICLE WE OWN. *TR

2006 HONDA ODYSSEY: AUTOMATIC DOOR ON DRIVER SIDE SLIDE OPEN WHILE ACCELERATING ON AN ON RAMP TO A HIGHWAY WITH AUTOMATIC LOCKS LOCKED. THE ON RAMP WAS CURVED AS WELL. THE DOOR WAS NOT SHUTTING COMPLETELY UNLESS I MANUALLY CLOSED IT. THE DOOR STAYED CLOSED. THERE WERE NO LIGHTS INDICATING AN OPEN DOOR. I HAD THE AUTOMATIC DOOR FUNCTION OFF. I TURNED IT ON TO CLOSE THE DOOR AND TURNED THE POWER OFF AGAIN UNTIL I COULD GET TO A SAFE SPOT TO MANUALLY CLOSE. I BROUGHT IT IN TO THE DEALER AND THE AUTOMATIC DOOR MOTOR WAS REPLACED AS WELL AS THE ROLLER. *TR
