On high speed turns when you hit a bump just right the steering wheel/column shakes violently and the entire front end vibrates to the point where it feels like control of the vehicle is lost.
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and going over bumps in the roadway the vehicle was difficult to control. The contact stated that while merging onto the highway at approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle drove over a small bump in the road and became difficult to maneuver. The contact stated that he was able to safely slow down and pull to the side of the highway to avoid a crash. The local dealer was contacted, and the contact was informed that the steering box needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and suggested that an appointment be made to diagnose the vehicle. The failure mileage was 16,791. The VIN was invalid.
I was driving down a major highway at approx 60 mph. The entire vehicle started violently shaking; uncontrollably. It was very difficult to control steering. This continued for approx. 2 minutes. No warning lights came on
Driving 72 mph on the interstate when I exited a bridge, there was a bump in the road. The front started to vibrate vigorously and the steering vibrated so hard that I almost had a wreck. Slowed down to 40 mph and the vibrating stopped.
Driving 72 mph on interstate, crossed a bridge and as I exited the bridge hit a rough spot and the 2018 Jeep Wrangler I was driving, suddenly the front end started vibrating vigorously and the steering wheel starting vibrating so bad I almost lost control of the vehicle. Finally I slowed down to 40 mph and the vibration stopped. I am afraid to drive the vehicle at a high rate of speed on the interstate because of the possibility of having a wreck. This need to be taken care immediately by the company at no charge to me. The vehicle only has 5500 miles on it. I bought it new.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING AT VARIOUS HIGH SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE WOBBLED UNCONTROLLABLY WITHOUT WARNING AFTER GOING OVER A BUMP IN THE ROADWAY. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO GLENDALE DODGE CHRYSLER JEEP (900 S BRAND BLVD, GLENDALE, CA 91204) WHERE IT WAS ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE DEALER WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE DEATH WOBBLE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER ALSO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS FAMILIAR AND THAT ENGINEERS WERE WORKING ON A REMEDY TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING GEAR BOX. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 18,000.
VEHICLE LOOSES STEERING CONTROL WHEN ENCOUNTERING SMALL BUMPS AT MEDIUM SPEEDS. VEHICLE HAS BEEN "FIXED" BY AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP UNDER FCA WARRANTY, AND CRITICAL SAFETY DEFECT CONTINUES. DRIVER LOSES ABILITY TO CONTROL AND STEER THE VEHICLE WHEN THIS HAPPENS
WHEN TRAVELING AT 70MPH+, CERTAIN BUMPS WILL CAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. THE WHEEL IS IMPOSSIBLE TO HOLD ON TO. YOU HAVE TO SHOW DOWN TO AROUND 50MPH TO GET THE SHAKE TO GO AWAY. IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND ALTHOUGH I EXPLAINED IT HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES, THEY SAID THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE IT AND THEREFORE UNABLE TO MAKE ANY REPAIRS
CAR HAS BEEN IN SHOP MULTIPLE TIMES WITH MULTIPLE PARTS REPLACEMENTS TO CORRECT JEEP DEATH WOBBLE. STEERING WHEEL SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND DRIVER LOSES CONTROL OF STEERING WHEN CAR HITS BUMPS GOING OVER 55 MPH. REPLACEMENT OF STEERING DAMPNER AND TRACK BAR HAVE ONLY BEEN TEMPORARY FIXES AND THEN PROBLEM STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN. THE PROBLEM IS PARTICULARLY BAD IF YOU HIS A BUMP WHEN THERE IS SLIGHT CURVE IN THE ROAD. ALL SERVICE DOCUMENTATION IS UPLOADED BELOW. STEERING DAMPNER AND TIRE ROD HAVE BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES SINCE 2019 AND IT IS CURRENTLY NOT WORKING AGAIN.
WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OUR 2018 JEEP WRANGLE UNLIMITED SPORT STARTED VIOLENTLY SHAKING SO BAD I COULD HARDLY HOLD ONTO THE STEERING WHEEL. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND THE SHAKING SUBSIDED. THIS HAS HAPPEN ABOUT FIVE TIMES SINCE IT FIRST OCCURRED. I ALSO RECEIVED A RECALL FROM FIAT CHRYSLER AUTOMOBILES (FCA) STATING THERE WAS A RECALL (V41) WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO FIX THIS ISSUE. WE MADE ARRANGEMENTS AT OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO GET THE RECALL WORK DONE BUT THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PART ON HAND EVEN AFTER THEY CONFIRMED THEY DID. THAT WAS ON JANUARY 15, 2021. THE DEALERSHIP (THOMPSONS CHRYSLER JEEP IN PLACERVILLE, CA) WAS TO CALL US WHEN THEY RECEIVED THE PART. IT HAD BEEN OVER A MONTH AND A HALF AND WE HAVE NOT HEARD A WORD FROM THEM EVEN AFTER NUMEROUS EMAILS ASKING FOR AN UPDATE.
2018 JEEP ONLY HAS 25,000 MILES AND VIBRATES VIOLENTLY WHEN YOU HIT A BUMP DRIVING OVER 50 - 60 MPH. HARD TO CONTROL. THIS HAPPENS ON THE HIGHWAY AND ON STREETS WHERE SPEED PERMITS.
DEATH WOBBLE OCCURS AT SPEEDS AROUND 60 MPH, TRIGGERED BY SMALL BUMPS ON THE ROAD. EXTREME SHAKING OCCURS ON THE STEERING OF THE VEHICLE. THE WOBBLING, WHEN IT IS TRIGGERED, CONTINUES EVEN IF THE ROAD IS SMOOTH AFTER THE BUMPS. THE WOBBLING IS NOT A VERTICAL VIBRATION FROM THE ROAD, IT IS A LEFT-RIGHT VIBRATION ON THE STEERING, WHICH THEN CAUSES VIOLENT SHAKING OF THE WHOLE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENS IN HIGHWAYS AT REGULAR CRUISING SPEEDS 60 MPH ON STRAIGHT ROAD SEGMENTS, TYPICALLY AFTER GOING THROUGH A SMALL PATCH OF IRREGULAR (LITTLE BUMPY) ROAD, LIKE A BRIDGE OR AN OVERPASS ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE HAD ABOUT 5 VISITS TO THE DEALER IN JEEP-CHRYSLER OF MORGANTOWN, WV AND THEY CLAIM THAT SINCE THEY CANNOT REPLICATE THE CONDITION, THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. BUT THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW.
I OWN A 2108 JEEP WRANGLER JL WITH 32,100-MILES ON THE ODOMETER. ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS IN THE PAST MONTH, WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60+ MPH, MY STEERING AND FRONT SUSPENSION HAS STARTED SHAKING IN A WILD, UNCONTROLLABLE MANNER, FORCING ME TO NEARLY BRING MY VEHICLE TO A STOP. THE SITUATION SEEMS TO BE INITIATED BY HITTING BUMPS AT HIGHWAY SPEED, WHICH TRIGGERS A RUN-AWAY, VIOLENT, HARMONIC SHAKING (NOT JUST VIBRATIONS). I HAD THE TIRES REBALANCED AND ALIGNMENT CHECKED, BUT THE SAME THING HAPPENED'THIS EXTREME SHAKING IS DEFINITELY NOT A TIRE ISSUE. I'M NOT ONLY CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY; BUT IF THIS CONTINUES, THE VIOLENT NATURE OF THIS SHAKING WILL MOST CERTAINLY DAMAGE OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE SUSPENSION OR STEERING.
STEERING DAMPER RECALL WAS COMPLETED I'M STILL EXPERIENCING THE "DEATH WOBBLE".VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO DEALERSHIP 6 TIMES AND GET TOLD EVERY TIME THAT EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD. PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN I HIT A BUMP OR A ROUGH SPOT ON THE ROAD AND THE VEHICLE AND STEERING WHEEL BEGIN TO SHAKE LIKE THE VEHICLE IS JUMPING ON THE ROAD. TYPICALLY OCCURS WHEN TRAVELING OVER 50 MPH AND ONLY CORRECTS AFTER YOU SLOW DOWN. ISSUE CONTINUES TO HAPPEN AND AND I FEEL THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE AND CAN POSE A LIFE THREATENING.
WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD CAUSES THE STEERING WHEEL AND FRONT SUSPENSION TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. THE JEEP DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED THE STEERING DAMPNER TWICE BUT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE IT WILL FIX THE ISSUE
MY JEEP HAS A "DEATH WOBBLE" THAT HAPPENS IN EXCESS OF 50 MILES AN HOUR IF THE JEEP HITS ROUGH ROAD, UNEVEN PAVEMENT OR GOING INTO A CURVE ON THE INTERSTATE, IT WILL BEGIN TO SHAKE SO VIOLENTLY ITS AS THOUGH THERE IS A MINI EARTHQUAKE INSIDE THE JEEP. IT IS TERRIFYING. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE, BUT AFTER TAKING MY JEEP TO TWO DIFFERENT JEEP DEALERSHIPS IN TWO DIFFERENT STATES, THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIX THIS ISSUE. NOTE THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE SINCE I BOUGHT THE JEEP IN 2019, IT SEEMED TO GET BETTER AFTER I TOOK IT IN FOR THE ORIGINAL RECALL, BUT SINCE OCT 2020 HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE AFTER THE JEEP DEALERSHIP HAS WORKED ON IT. SINCE OCT 2020 AND AS OF NOV 28 2020, I HAVE TAKEN THE JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS ISSUE 3 TIMES, I WILL HAVE A 4TH UNDER MY BELT WHEN THEY RECEIVE SOME OTHER PART THEY SAY THEY JUST FOUND AND NEED TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE.
TRAVELING WEST ON I 40 IN WILMINGTON NC APPROX 70 MPH WHEN VEHICLE BEGAN TO SUDDENLY SHAKE VIOLENTLY FOR NO APPARENT REASON. MY WIFE BECAME SO SCARED AS SHE DROVE, WE HAD TO PULL OVER AND I HAD TO TAKE OVER DRIVING. SHE WILL NOT DRIVE THIS JEEP AGAIN. I'VE NEVER SEEN A VEHICLE SHAKE SO VIOLENTLY AS IF THE ENTIRE FRONT END WAS ABOUT TO FALL OUT FROM UNDER THE CAR ANY SECOND. NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, I THINK IT DEFINITELY IS A SAFETY ISSUE. 3 LANE HIGHWAY, 70 MPH, CARS ON EVERY SIDE OF YOU AND YOU HAVE TO SLAM ON BRAKES, OR THE INSTINCT IS TO SLAM ON BRAKES BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOU ARE ABOUT TO DIE OR NOT. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS FRONT END ISSUE WITH JEEP WRANGLER.
UNABLE TO CONTROL STEERING AT HIGH WAY SPEED 65MPH JEEP SHOOK VIOLENTLY UNABLE TO CONTROL ! . VEHICLE ALMOST FLIPPED OVER
STANDARD 2018 JEEP WRANGLER, NO MODICATIONS, FACTORY TIRES, RECENTLY SERVICED WITH OIL CHANGE. DAY, DRY CONDITIONS, NO ROAD HAZARDS. WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT APPROX 70 MPH, THE ASPHALT AREA AROUND AN OVERPASS IS A LITTLE HIGH, AND WHEN OUR FRONT TIRES MADE CONTACT WITH THE UNEVEN SURFACE, THE CAR IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE AND WOBBLE FOR OVER 45 SECONDS TO A MINUTE, AND THE STEERING WHEEL WOBBLED EXCESSIVELY WHILE I WAS TRYING TO TROUBLESHOOT THE MALFUNCTION, AND MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE JEEP. I PROCEEDED TO SLOW FOR TO APPROX 40 MPH USING MY BRAKES LIGHTLY, AND MAINTAINING A GRIP ON THE STEERING WHEEL WHICH I COULD BARELY HOLD ONTO AND THE OSCILLATIONS, WENT AWAY. I RESUMED ACCELERATION BACK TO 65-70 MPH, AND AGAIN ENCOUNTERED SOME MORE UNEVEN PAVEMENT. THE ENTIRE EPISODE RE-OCCURED AND WAS SO VIOLENT THAT I NEEDED TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUTDOWN THE CAR AND VISUALLY INSPECT FOR DAMAGE. THE SHAKING WAS SO VIOLENT, I THOUGHT SOMETHING MIGHT HAVE BROKEN, OR THE TIRES WERE ABOUT TO FALL OFF. THIS CAR HAS APPROX 16,000 MILES, AND NEVER HAD ANY DAMAGE. THIS IS THE 6TH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED.IN THE PAST TWO YEARS AND IT ONLY HAPPENS ON TARMAC TYPE SURFACES, WHILE GOING 60-75 MPH.

WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH I HAD A SEVERE VIBRATION (DEATH WOBBLE) IN THE FRONT OF MY JEEP. IT IS 2018 WITH LESS THAN 4,000 MILES. IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND I HAVE TAKEN IT TO JEEP BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO RECREATE IT.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO HENDRICK CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM FIAT OF CONCORD 7630 HENDRICK AUTO PLAZA NW, CONCORD, NC 28027, WHERE THE STEERING DAMPER WAS REPLACED A SECOND TIME HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO HENDRICK CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM FIAT OF CONCORD, WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS TEST DRIVEN BY A TECHNICIAN. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. ON ANOTHER OCCASION WHILE MERGING INTO TRAFFIC AT 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE FISHTAILED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND DROVE BACK TO THE RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000.
WE BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE FROM HOFFER JEEP IN TOPEKA, KS. THE VEHICLE WAS WON BUY A PERSON AT A CASINO EVENT SO WE ARE THE 2ND OWNER. THE VEHICLE HAD, I BELIEVE UNDER 2K MILES, UPON OUR PURCHASE. SINCE, WE HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE IT HAS CONSISTENTLY HAD A "DEATH WOBBLE". I SIMPLY CANNOT COUNT HOW MANY TIMES AT OR UNDER MANDATED HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS VEHICLE HAS ENTERED A 'DEATH WOBBLE". THE MOST RECENT WAS FROM RETURNING FROM MANHATTAN KS TO KANSAS CITY THE VEHICLE ENTERED A "DEATH WOBBLE" NO LESS THAN 4 TIMES. THE LAST TIME I WAS DRIVING 5 MILES UNDER THE 75MPH SPEED LIMIT WHEN HITTING SOME ROAD CHATTER, NOTHING SIGNIFICANT, CAUSED UNCONTROLLABLE CHATTER IN FRONT WHEELS, AXLE, GENERATING STRONG VIBRATION THROUGH THE STEERING COLUMN AND WHEEL. I RELEASED THE ACCELERATOR AND THE VEHICLE CAME OUT OF THE "DEATH WOBBLE" AT 27MPH, ON AN INCREDIBLY BUSY HIGHWAY. THIS WAS/IS UNSAFE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE DANGERS IT CAUSED COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC IN NATURE AND NEED TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. THIS VEHICLE IS STOCK AND HAS NOT HAD ITS SUSPENSION, TIRES, ETC., ADJUSTED OR MANIPULATED IN ANY SHAPE, FASHION, OR FORM. PLEASE ADVISE ON HOW THIS MATTER SHOULD BE DEALT WITH GOING FORWARD? THANKS
DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE VEHICLES STEERING IS DANGEROUS AND IT BECOMES MORE PRONOUNCED IN THE WIND AND IN THE RAIN. IT DRIFTS DANGEROUSLY AND WHEN TRYING TO CORRECT THE DRIFT THE STEERING IS NOT VERY RESPONSIVE SINCE IT HAS WAY TOO MUCH PLAY SO YOU BEGIN TO OVER CORRECT CAUSING EVEN MORE ISSUES. IN THE RAIN THE VEHICLE HAS THE FEEL AS IF IT'S HYDROPLANING AND THE IMPACT FROM THE WETS ROADS AND PUDDLES CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO DRIFT EVEN MORE. I FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE RECEIVED REPLACEMENTS OF THE 1.STEERING BOX (68259507AE) 2.THE DAMPER (RECALL 77072360) 3.TRACK BAR (68394087AA) ALL OF THESE PARTS HAVE BEEN UPGRADED BY MOPAR AND I'M GUESSING THAT WAS FOR OBVIOUS REASONS BUT MY DEALERSHIP AND CUSTOMER SERVICE AT JEEP/CHRYSLER REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS A PROBLEM YET THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. I SHOWED THEM PROOF IN BOTH VIDEOS AND WITH THE UPGRADED PARTS AND IT DOES NOT SEEM TO MATTER TO THEM THAT THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION. FUNNY, I WAS TOLD BY MY DEALERSHIP THAT THIS WAS NORMAL FOR A JEEP AND ITS NOT ACCEPTABLE I TOLD HIM IT FELT DANGEROUS AND HE AGREED IT DRIFTS BUT SAYS THAT NORMAL FOR A JEEP.
