My 4Runner was involved in a collision where the airbags did not deploy, and I was knocked unconscious from hitting the steering wheel. The vehicle now shows an SRS fault code and is subject to an open Takata airbag recall. Toyota corporate initially stated they would cover towing for the recall repair, then reversed that decision, claiming an airbag fault does not prevent the vehicle from starting. Because of the failed airbag deployment and recall defect, the vehicle is unsafe to drive until the recall is completed. Toyota’s refusal to provide towing prevents me from safely completing a federally mandated safety recall. I am requesting NHTSA assistance in ensuring Toyota fulfills its obligations under federal recall law.

"TAKATA RECALL",I NO LONGER HAVE A VEHICLE FOR LONG DISTANCE TRAVELING BECAUSE THE RECOMMENDED SAFETY PRECAUTION NO PASSENGER IN THE FRONT SEAT POSES PROBLEMS WHEN PERFORMING DAILY ACTIVITIES, TRAVELING FOR VACATIONS AND ENGAGING IN OTHER FAMILY ACTIVITIES. IF THE AIRBAGS NEED TO BE REPLACED I RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THE SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED AND COMPLETED BEFORE OUR NEXT SCHEDULE VACATION. THE SUGGESTION TO HAVE NO FRONT PASSENGER IS LUDICROUS AND HAS DEEMED MY VEHICLE UNFIT FOR ITS PURPOSE. "IN THE EVENT OF RUPTURE, METAL FRAGMENTS MAY/WILL PASS THROUGH THE AIRBAG, STRIKING THE OCCUPANT AND RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH." TAKATA RECALL- I WAS NOTIFIED IN JUNE 2016 ABOUT A DEFECT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG. SINCE LAST YEAR I HAVE ASKED OUR TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN HAWAII MANY TIMES ABOUT THE RECALL AND WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE IN. ALL THEY CAN SAY IS THAT THEY DON'T KNOW AND ADVISED ME NOT TO HAVE ANYONE SIT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT TILL IT IS FIXED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY IT IS TAKING SO LONG TO GET THE PARTS IN AND TO FIX THE AIRBAG IF IT IS SUCH A MAJOR AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM. I HAVE A FAMILY OF 5 AND IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO USE THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. THIS IS REALLY AFFECTING THE USE OF THE SUV.

THE NOTICE ALSO STATED THAT IT IS ADVISED NOT TO HAVE A PARTY RIDE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT??? WELL, IT HAS BEEN OVER (7) MONTHS NOW AND I AM STILL DRIVING WITH THIS DANGER PRESENT AND UNABLE TO ALLOW ANYONE TO BE SEATED IN THE FRONT...(?) THIS MATTER NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED RIGHT AWAY! TAKATA RECALL - OVER A YEAR AGO TOYOTA SENT ME A RECALL NOTICE TELLING ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS CONSIDERED UNSAFE TO HAVE ANYONE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AS IT IS POTENTIALLY DEADLY DUE TO AN AIRBAG DEFECT. FOR OVER A YEAR I HAVE COMPLIED WITH THIS DIRECTIVE AND NOT BEEN FULLY ABLE TO UTILIZE MY VEHICLE AS IT IS NOW ONLY A FOUR PERSON VEHICLE VS. 5 PERSON. RECENTLY I RECEIVED MY RECALL NOTICE STATING THAT TOYOTA WAS FINALLY ABLE TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND THE NOTICE DIRECTED ME TO CONTACT MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER TO HAVE SEVERAL PARTS REPLACED. UPON CONTACTING MY LOCAL DEALER I WAS TOLD, "THEY SHOW THEY ARE ON BACK ORDER AT THE MOMENT SO THERE IS NO ETA ON THE EXACT DATE OF WHEN THEY WILL BE IN BUT THERE WAS ONE ORDERED FOR YOU SPECIFICALLY SO WHEN THE PARTS DO COME IN WE WILL CONTACT YOU." SO BASICALLY I WAITED OVER A YEAR FOR TOYOTA TO TELL ME THEY COULD FINALLY FIX THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE ONLY FOR TOYOTA TO TELL ME THEY REALLY CAN'T FIX IT AND DON'T KNOW WHEN THEY'LL BE ABLE TO. THAT'S NOT OKAY. IT'S FALSE ADVERTISING AND A FARCE TO CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE BEEN ASKED TO NOT USE THEIR VEHICLE AS PURCHASED. ADDITIONALLY, MY VEHICLE HAS 95,000 MILES ON IT AND I WILL WANT TO SELL IT SOON (PREFERABLY BEFORE IT HITS 100,000 MILES, BUT WHO IS GOING TO BUY A VEHICLE THAT CAN'T BE USED IN THE MANNER IN WHICH IT WAS INTENDED. SECONDLY, THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT I CALLED AND SCHEDULED THE APPOINTMENT WITH GOT ME IN THE NEXT DAY (WHICH WAS GREAT), BUT THEY FAILED TO REALIZE THAT THEY DIDN'T EVEN HAVE THE RIGHT PART FOR MY PARTICULAR CAR! I DROVE ALMOST AN HOUR THERE, WASTED AN HOUR THERE AND THEN THEY TOLD ME THEY WERE SORRY AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE RIGHT PART. THEY ASKED IF I COULD BRING IT BACK TOMORROW OR LEAVE IT OVERNIGHT, BUT WHEN I ASKED IF THEY'D GIVE ME SOMETHING TO DRIVE THEY SAID THEY DON'T DO THAT... SO, SOMEONE DROPPED THE BALL! WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO MY AIRBAG AND SOMEONE WAS INJURED OR KILLED? SCOTT WILL TOYOTA OF SUMTER SOUTH CAROLINA IS THE NAME OF THE DEALERSHIP BY THE WAY. WE HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA EVERY 2 WEEKS SINCE OUR PURCHASE AND EVERY TWO WEEKS WE ARE TOLD THE SAME THING; "TWO MORE WEEKS."
