THE CAR IS CONSTANTLY MOVING LEFT OR RIGHT IN YOUR LANE WITH OUT YOU MOVING STEERING WHEEL. YOU NEED TO CORRECT ALL THE TIME. SOME TIMES WHEN YOU CORRECT A LITTLE IT MOVES A LOT. CAR WOULD NOT TRACK DOWN THE HIGHWAY. FEELS LIKE I'M CONSTANTLY CORRALLING THIS CAR , ADJUSTING THE STEERING WHEEL TO STAY IN MY LANE OF TRAFFIC. IN MY 40 PLUS YEARS OF DRIVING, I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS BEHAVIOR FROM A VEHICLE. THIS BEHAVIOR ACTUALLY OCCURS AT ALL SPEEDS. HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MY MECHANIC THAT IT IS NOT AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE, BUT IS A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM. SEEMS LIKE A GRAVE SAFETY CONCERN TO ME. THE CAR'S STEERING GOT OUT OF CONTROL. THE CAR WAS STOPPED AT RED LIGHT AND I TRIED TO TURN LEFT AT GREEN LIGHT. IT SUDDENLY TURNED LEFT SHARPLY AND WENT OVER THE OPPOSITE LANE. I WAS DRIVING DOWN INTERSTATE 65 IN INDIANA ON A WINDY DAY AND WAS HAVING TROUBLE KEEPING MY CAR IN MY LANE. THE CAR WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE AND I HAD TO CONSTANTLY FIGHT TO KEEP IT ON THE HIGHWAY. I SLOWED DOWN AND IT DID NOT HELP. FOR A WHILE I HAVE HEARD A CLUNK NOISE IN THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE WHEN HITTING A BUMP. I THOUGHT THE NOISE WAS A BROKEN STRUT. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE SHOP TODAY (MIDAS) IN HAMMOND INDIANA AND THEY SAID THE NOISE WAS PROBABLY FROM A LOOSE TIE ROD. THE MECHANIC SHOWED ME HE COULD MOVE THE FRONT WHEEL WHILE THE CAR WAS IN THE AIR 1 TO 2 INCHES TO EITHER DIRECTION LEFT OR RIGHT WITHOUT MOVING THE STEERING WHEEL OR FRONT WHEEL ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CAR. THE TIE ROD HAD OVER ONE INCH OF PLAY GOING INTO THE STEERING GEAR BOX. THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND THIS SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED AT 41,128 MILES. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. MY CAR IS NOW AT MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER GETTING A BRAND NEW ELECTRIC RACK STEERING GEAR BOX AND TIE ROD ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. *TR

I AM UNABLE TO DRIVE AT A SAFE SPEED ON THE INTERSTATE DUE TO INSTABILITY WITH THE STEERING MECHANISM. THE CAR PULLS TO THE LEFT AND AT TIMES MY WHEELS GOES OVER INTO THE OTHER LANE. AT TIMES IT FEELS I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE CAR AND MUST APPLY THE BRAKES TO KEEP THE CAR FROM STEERING IN WHATEVER DIRECTION IT WANTS TO GO. MY REAR TIRES FEEL LIKE THEY WANT TO BYPASS THE FRONT OF MY CAR ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE. TAKING AN EXIT WITH A SHARP CURVE TO THE RIGHT, I HAD TO SLAM ON MY BRAKES TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FROM STEERING OFF THE ROAD ESPECIALLY WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE BEHIND ME. I HAD MY TIRES CHANGED AND A FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STILL THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. THE MECHANIC TEST DROVE MY CAR AFTER I TOOK IT BACK TO THE SHOP. THE MECHANIC WROTE ON MY SALES SLIP, "VEHICLE SWAYS AT HWY SPEEDS. RECHECKED SUSPENSION, FELT NO PLAY ON BOTH FRONT WHEELS, VEHICLE DRIVES STRAIGHT WHEN IT FEELS LIKE ITS SWAYING SIDE TO SIDE. STEERING WHEEL ITSELF FEELS LOOSE." I CONSIDER MY VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE I COULD LOSE CONTROL OF THE STEERING WITHIN A MATTER OF SECONDS OR IF I NEED TO CHANGE LANES AT A MUCH SLOWER SPEED THAN MOST OTHERS ARE GOING IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. WITH THE AVERAGE PERSON DRIVING 10 MILES OVER THE SPEED LIMIT AND SOME UP TO 90 MILES WEAVING IN AND OUT OF TRAFFIC, CUTTING PEOPLE OFF, BASICALLY BEING RUDE; IT MAKES FOR A DANGEROUS SITUATION NOT ONLY FOR MYSELF BUT OTHERS ON THE ROAD. I CAN ONLY PRAY THAT I MAKE IT HOME SAFELY TO WORK AND HOME EACH DAY BEFORE I'M ABLE TO SHELL OUT A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR MORE REPAIR WORK ON MY CAR. THANKS TOYOTA! *TR

POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING SUDDENLY, CAR VEERED TO THE RIGHT, BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER; DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT WENT ON. THIS HAS OCCURRED UP TO 20 TIMES, SOMETIMES AS SOON AS THE CAR IS TURNED ON, SOMETIMES ON THE FREEWAY AT HIGH SPEED. IF VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, LOSS OF POWER STEERING CAUSES VEHICLE TO JUMP SIDEWAYS. AT TIMES, LOSS OF POWER STEERING IS PRECEDED BY GROANING SOUND. OWNERS' MANUAL ADVISES STOPPING THE VEHICLE, WAITING UNTIL WARNING LIGHT GOES OUT, AND TAKING CAR TO DEALER. I HAVE TAKEN CAR TO TOYOTA DEALERS ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE COMPUTER MEMORY SHOWS THE WARNING LIGHT GOING ON, BUT THERE APPEARS TO BE NOTHING WRONG WITH ELECTRIC POWER STEERING UNIT, AND DEALER CAN NOT DUPLICATE OCCURRENCE ON A TEST DRIVE. *TR

I HAD STEERING CHECKED AT DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD NO PROBLEMS WERE FOUND WITH CALIBRATION. I CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON STEERING AND IF I HAD CONCERNS I SHOULD HAVE IT CHECKED AT THE DEALERSHIP. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. UNABLE TO GRADUALLY AND SAFELY CORRECT VEHICLE PATH. WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN YESTERDAY,MY STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHIFTING SO HARD THAT MADE ME LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR, CAUSING ME TO SPIN AND HIT ANOTHER CAR ALSO TURNING LEFT.I WAS DRIVING WITH CAUTION, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY RAINING,BUT THE WORST PART IS THAT IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME.I REPORTED ANOTHER ACCIDENT IN 2010 CAUSED BY THE SAME FAILED COMPONENT.I WAS DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT LANE WHILE RAINING AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN MY STEERING WHEEL LOST CONTROL AND MY CAR SPAN 2 TIMES,MAKING ME END ON A DITCH. THANKS GOD THE ROAD WAS CLEAR, SO MY CAR DIDN'T HIT ANY OTHER CAR;HOWEVER, THIS HAS BEEN THE MOST TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!; IT LEFT ME WITH A TRAUMA THAT WAS WITH ME FOR OVER A YEAR. IT MADE ME TERRIFIED OF DRIVING THIS CAR, ESPECIALLY UNDER RAINING CONDITIONS. AFTER THAT I BOUGHT NEW TIRES,THEN TOOK IT TO TOYOTA TO GET CHECKED.THEY SAID THE STEERING WAS IN FACT SHIFTING, AND THAT THE COMPUTER THAT CONTROLS IT WASN'T WORKING CORRECTLY, SO THEY REPLACED IT.I FELT MORE SECURE AFTERWARDS,SO I DROVE MY CAR NORMALLY, STILL FEELING THE SHIFT UNDER WINDY CONDITIONS,BLAMING IT ON THE WIND FOR NOT FEELING TERRIFIED ANYMORE..UNTIL YESTERDAY!THIS TIME CAUSING ME TO CRASH ONTO ANOTHER CAR!NOW I'M SCARED TO DEATH TO DRIVE MY CAR, AND HAVE TO LOSE TIME, STRESS AND AGGRAVATION ON SOMETHING THAT SHOULD'VE BEEN A RECALL YEARS AGO! A WEEK AGO AFTER PICKING MY SON, I NOTICED THAT WHEN I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL OF MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA TO A CERTAIN POINT, MY WHOLE STEERING WHEEL WAS MOVING AND MAKING A GRINDING NOISE. I BROUGHT IT TO COPELAND TOYOTA THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED MY NEW CAR BACK IN 2008. MON. 9/10 I CALLED TO OBTAIN THE STATUS OF MY VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD A BOLT CAME OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN AND THEY WERE "TRYING" TO GET THE BOLT BACK IN. NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR WOULD SAY A BOLT FALLS OUT A NEW BOLT GOES IN, NOT "TRYING" TO GET BACK IN. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE WORST THAT WOULD HAPPEN IS THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN. I FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA AS I AM NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY ( 1 YR AND 4,000 ML OVER). LATER MONDAY, TOYOTA STATED THAT THE BRACKET OF THE STEERING COLUMN IS THE ISSUE AND THE WHOLE UNIT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. WHEN I ASKED THE SERVICE DEPT, I WAS DEALING WITH; IF THIS FELL UNDER "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR" HE TOLD ME IT DID NOT. TUESDAY 9/11, I HEARD BACK THE TOYOTA CORPORATE OFFICE THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE PAYING FOR THIS AND THAT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BILL, THAT IS JUST OVER $2000.00. I SPOKE WITH [XXX] AT THE DEALERSHIP WHO IS THE SERVICE MANAGER & HE HIMSELF MENTIONED THAT THIS IS A "UNIQUE CASE." REGARDLESS IF IT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY OR NOT, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, ONE THAT IS NOT FROM NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND I CERTAINLY DID NOT CREATE. I WAS TOLD THAT I HAVEN'T HAD MY CAR SERVICED THERE FOR A YEAR, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT DEALERSHIPS COSTS FOR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE IS EXTREMELY PRICEY AND I DIDN'T GO THERE FOR OIL CHANGES AND TIRE ROTATIONS, I DID BRING IT IN FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE. WHEN HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF ANY CAR COMPANY DROPPING YOUR STEERING COLUMN TO CHECK BOLTS DURING A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE CHECK? VERY STRONG VIBRATION HAS BEEN PRESENT IN MY STEERING COLUMN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHICH TOLD ME IT WAS THE REAR STRUTS. REPLACED THEM $600.00. THE MECHANIC NOTED IN HIS NOTES THAT VIBRATION WAS STILL BAD UPON RELEASING THE CAR TO ME. I WAS TOLD I NEEDED NEW TIRES AND BALANCING. I TOOK IT ELSEWHERE AND HAD NEW TIRES AND BALANCING DONE. THE PROBLEM STILL PRESENT TODAY. I TOOK IT IN AGAIN TODAY AND WAS TOLD IT WAS NOW MY ROTERS. NEW PADS, ROTERS AND ANOTHER ALIGNMENT WITH REAR BRAKES CLEANED AND RE BALANCE ANOTHER $450.00. THIS WHOLE TIME I HAVE BEEN FEELING THAT THE PROBLEM IS IN THE STEERING COLUMN. NOW I LEARN THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION REGUARDING MY MAKE AND MODEL FOR THAT YEAR. UNSTABLE STEERING, WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING OVER 60 MILES AN HOUR IT HAS A TENDANCY TO WANDER OVER THE WHOLE ROAD. IF THERE IS A CROSS WIND IT REALLY IS BAD. THE WIFE WILL NOT DRIVE IT. I HAVE TALKED TO OTHER CUSTOMERS THEY HAVE A SIMILAR COMPLAINT. SEEMS TO GET WORSE WITH AGE OF CAR. WHEN I TAKE THE CAR IN TO GET IT SERVICED I MENTION THE STEERING AND THEY SAY THERE IS NO PROBLEM. THEY DO NOT WRITE IT DOWN ON THE SERVICE REQUEST EITHER. I GUESS THEY DO NOT WANT A RECORD. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME TO DAY THE OTHER TIME IT QUIT IN THE MIDDLE. I AM REENTERING. *TR

ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING (EPS) TURNS OFF EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. AS A RESULT, STEERING GET VERY HEAVY AND REQUIRES A LOT OF FORCE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. I HAD TO TURN OFF THE CAR AND TURN IT BACK ON TO RESET THE EPS MOTOR. *JS

I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED A CERTIFIED USED 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA WITH ONLY 25,000 MILES ON IT. I'VE NOTICED THAT STEERING THIS VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, CAN BE A CHALLENGE. THE CAR SEEMS TO HAVE A MIND OF ITS OWN SOMETIMES BECAUSE OUT OF NOWHERE THE CAR WILL ABRUPTLY VEER TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. I'VE ALREADY TAKEN THIS VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY CHECKED THE WHEEL ALIGNMENT, ROTATED THE TIRES, AND ADJUSTED THE TIRE AIR PRESSURE. THEY NOTIFIED ME THAT EVERYTHING WAS UP TO SPECIFICATION. ON APRIL 16, 2012 A BOX BLEW OUT OF THE BACK OF A TRUCK ON A HIGHWAY AND WHEN I SWERVED TO AVOID IT I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN I GOT HOME I GOT ONLINE AND FOUND A TON OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR 2009-2010 COROLLA. APPARENTLY IT HAS TO DO WITH THE NEW ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING THEY INITIATED IN 2009. PERHAPS THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO THE OLD HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM. PLEASE HELP!! *JS

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE WOULD PULL TO THE RIGHT AND THE LEFT ABNORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE BUT ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE FAILURE WAS NOT CAUSED BY AN ALIGNMENT PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 20,000. WHEN CAR IS DRIVEN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, 70-75 MPH, STEERING PULLS LEFT AND RIGHT RAPIDLY, CAUSING CAR TO BECOME VERY UNSTABLE IN HANDLING. SEEMS TO DRIFT IN ITS LANE. WHEN DRIVING IT IS VERY UNPREDICTABLE. I JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED AND BECAME AWARE OF IT. NO ACCIDENT ISSUES ONLY 40,000 MILES CONTACTED TOYOTA DEALER IN GREEN BAY, AND THEY SAID THEY NEVER HEARD OF ANY COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE 2009 COROLLA ELECTRIC ASSISTED POWER STEERING. FURTHER STATED I SHOULD 'TRY AND FIND SOMETHING ON THE INTERNET' TO SHOW IF THERE ARE ANY ISSUES.. COMPLETE STONEWALLING.. *TR
